Mumbai

Mumbai is the capital city of the Indian state of Maharashtra. It is the most populous city in India and the ninth most populous agglomeration in the world, with an estimated city population of 18.4 million. Along with the neighbouring regions of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, it is one of the most populous urban regions in the world and the seсond most populous metropolitan area in India, with a population of 20.7 million as of 2011. Mumbai lies on the west coast of India and has a deep natural harbour. In 2009, Mumbai was named an alpha world city. It is also the wealthiest city in India, and has the highest GDP of any city in South, West, or Central Asia. Mumbai has the highest number of billionaires and millionaires among all cities in India. The seven islands that came to constitute Mumbai were home to communities of fishing colonies. For centuries, the islands were under the control of successive indigenous empires before being ceded to the Portuguese and subsequently to the British East India Company when in 1661 King Charles II married the Portuguese Catherine of Braganza, and as part of her dowry Charles received the ports of Tangier and seven islands of Bombay. During the mid-18th century, Bombay was reshaped by the Hornby Vellard project, which undertook reclamation of the area between the seven islands from the sea. Along with construction of major roads and railways, the reclamation project, completed in 1845, transformed Bombay into a major seaport on the Arabian Sea. Bombay in the 19th century was characterized by economic and educational development. During the early 20th century it became a strong base for the Indian independence movement. Upon India's independence in 1947 the city was incorporated into Bombay State. In 1960, following the Samyukta Maharashtra movement, a new state of Maharashtra was created with Bombay as the capital. The city was renamed Mumbai in 1996. Mumbai is the financial, commercial and entertainment capital of India. It is also one of the world's top ten centres of commerce in terms of global financial flow, generating 6.16% of India's GDP and accounting for 25% of industrial output, 70% of maritime trade in India (Mumbai Port Trust and JNPT), and 70% of capital transactions to India's economy. The city houses important financial institutions such as the Reserve Bank of India, the Bombay Stock Exchange, the National Stock Exchange of India, the SEBI and the corporate headquarters of numerous Indian companies and multinational corporations. It is also home to some of India's premier scientific and nuclear institutes like BARC, NPCL, IREL, TIFR, AERB, AECI, and the Department of Atomic Energy. The city also houses India's Hindi and Marathi film and television industry. Bhaja Caves

Bhaja Caves or Bhaje caves is a group of 22 rock-cut caves dating back to the 2nd century BC located in Pune, near Lonavala, Maharashtra. The caves are 400 feet above the village of Bhaja, on an important ancient trade route running from the Arabian Sea eastward into the Deccan Plateau (the division between North India and South India). The inscriptions and the cave temple are protected as a National Monument, by the Archaeological Survey of India per Notification No. 2407-A. It belongs to the Hinayana Buddhism sect in Maharashtra. The caves have a number of stupas, one of their significant features. The most prominent excavation is its chaityagrha (Cave XII), demonstrating prototypes of wooden architecture and a vaulted horseshoe ceiling. Its vihara has a pillared verandah in front and is adorned with unique reliefs. These caves are notable for their indications of the awareness of wooden architecture. The carvings prove that tabla a percussion instrument was used in India for at least two thousand years. The carving shows a woman playing tabla and another woman, performing dance.

Pune

Pune is the ninth-most populous city in India and the second largest in the state of Maharashtra after the state capital city of Mumbai. Pune is also the 71st largest city in the world, by population.Pune is now listed in the Smart City plan of Union Government. It is situated 560 metres above sea level on the Deccan plateau, on the right bank of the Mutha river. Pune city is the administrative headquarters of Pune district and was once the centre of power of the Maratha Empire established by Shivaji Maharaj. In the 18th century, Pune became the political centre of the Indian subcontinent, as the seat of Peshwas who were the prime ministers of the Maratha Empire. Pune is considered the cultural capital of Maharashtra. Since the 1950s and 1960s, Pune has a traditional old-economic base . Most of the old industries continue to grow. The city is also known for its manufacturing and automobiles industries, as well as for research institutes of information technology(IT), education, management and training, which attract migrants, students, and professionals from India, South East Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. Ellora

Ellora (\e-ˈlȯr-ə\, Kannada: ಎಲ್ಲೋರಾ)also known as Verul is an archaeological site 29 km north-west of the city of Aurangabad in the Indian state of Maharashtra, built by the Rashtrakuta dynasty(Buddhist and Brahmanical group of caves ) and Yadav (Jain group of caves). It is also known as Elapura in the Rashtrakuta Kannada literature. Well known for its monumental caves, Ellora is an UNESCO World Heritage Site and forms one of major tourist attraction in Marathwada region of Maharashtra Ellora represents the epitome of Indian rock-cut architecture. The 34 "caves" are actually structures excavated out of the vertical face of the Charanandri hills. Buddhist, Hindu and Jain rock-cut temples and viharas and mathas were built between the 5th century and 10th century. The 12 Buddhist (caves 1-12), 17 Hindu and 5 Jain caves, built in proximity, demonstrate the religious harmony prevalent during this period of Indian history. It is a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India.

Tardeo

Tardeo or Tardeo Road is a residential and commercial locality of South Mumbai, from Nana Chowk to Haji Ali Junction. Tardeo Road is an important arterial road of the city of Mumbai. The road is now renamed as Javji Dadaji Road from Nana Chowk to Tardeo Circle with post code 400007 and Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya Road from Tardeo Circle to Haji Ali with post code 400034. Post codes 400007 are served by Grant Road post office and 400034 are served by Tulsiwadi post office. It lies 23 km from the Chatrapati Shivaji International Airport. It is connected by railway through the Mumbai Central railway station as well as by buses operated by BEST, MSRTC, and NMMT. Tardeo houses the Regional Transport Office of Mumbai city. It also has important commercial offices located in the AC Market Building and the Film Centre Building both on the Tardeo Road. In 1999, Tardeo and the city of Mumbai witnessed the opening of its first full-fledged shopping mall Crossroads, converted from an old pharmaceutical plant belonging to 'Roche'. The mall was an instant success and it attracted loads of people from all corners of the city, adding further strain on traffic and pollution and a worsening parking crisis. More and more land is acquired in this part of the city to turn old mills and dilapidated structures into swanky new residential towers. The Imperial Towers are a pair of residential towers in Tardeo that are the tallest complete buildings in India.

Navi Mumbai

Navi Mumbai is a planned township on the west coast of the Indian state of Maharashtra. It was mooted in 1971 to be a new urban township of Mumbai by the Government Of Maharashtra. For this purpose a new public sector undertaking was established that is CIDCO. Navi Mumbai has a population of 1,119,477 as per the 2011 provisional census. Navi Mumbai is situated across two districts namely Thane and Raigad. The nodes of the city in the Thane district are developed and are hence administered by the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation which was established in 1992. The remaining newly developed and developing nodes in the Raigad district are administered by CIDCO. The city has a robust infrastructure, is well connected to other parts of the state and country and is relatively less polluted compared to Mumbai. Navi Mumbai has a good public transportation system with NMMT, the transport wing of NMMC, serving the bus commuters, the Mumbai suburban railway serving the train commuters and a large fleet of auto rickshaws for intra-nodal commute. The Mumbai-Pune Expressway starts at Kalamboli in Navi Mumbai. Navi Mumbai would have its own international airport by 2019. It is being developed primarily to ease the burden off Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport in Mumbai and to put Navi Mumbai on global map as a standalone city. The city is home to various educational institutions offering courses in several streams including engineering, medical sciences, interior designing, hotel management, etc. Various MNCs like Siemens, McDonald's, Bureau Veritas, Bizerba, Larsen & Toubro, etc. have their offices/branches across the city making it an active business hub. Navi Mumbai also has various recreational facilities such as the golf course, central park and Pandavkada water falls in Kharghar, Parsik Hill near Mahape, Wonders park in Nerul, mini seashore or Sagar Vihar in Vashi etc. and several other public places like gardens and jogging tracks. Navi Mumbai also has many quality restaurants and luxury hotels for accommodation. There are many shopping malls such as Little World mall in Kharghar, Centre One, Inorbit and Raghuleela malls in Vashi, etc. Navi Mumbai is considered as an entry point of Mumbai city. Its location and infrastructure coupled up with affordable housing and low pollution makes Navi Mumbai the most preferred choice for new immigrants coming from in and out of Maharashtra seeking good living conditions outside Mumbai, despite facing daily hardship in these living conditions. Navi Mumbai has been ranked 12th among 73 cities surveyed for cleanliness and hygiene by the Union Ministry of Urban Development and Quality Council of India as a part of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.

Nashik

Nashik ( pronunciation ) is a city in the northwest region of Maharashtra and is the administrative headquarter of the Nashik District and Nashik Division. The city is situated at the foothills of the Western Ghats mountains on the banks of the river Godavari. At 700 m (2,300 ft) above sea level, its elevation is highest among the major cities in Maharashtra and one of the highest among million plus cities in India. Nashik is in northern Maharashtra at 700 m (2,300 ft) from the mean sea level. The river Godavari originates 24 km (15 mi) from Brahmagiri Mountain, Trimbakeshwar, Nashik and flows along the northern boundary of the city through the old residential settlement. The river had been dying at an alarming rate due to pollution created by factories. But it has been successfully cleaned. Other than Godavari, important rivers like Vaitarana, Bhima, Girana, Kashyapi and Darana flow across Nashik. Nashik lies on the western edge of the Deccan Plateau which is a volcanic formation. All over the district, lime nodules and kankar are found. Jalgaon and Aurangabad are to the east of Nashik. Ahmadnagar lies to the south while Thane and part of Gujrat are to the west of Nashik. Trimbakeshwar is about 30 km (19 mi) from the city, from where river Godavari originates. The land area of the city is about 259.13 km2 (100.05 sq mi)..

Marine Lines

Marine Lines is a locality in South Mumbai. The name Marine Lines is derived from the Marine Battalion Lines, a military establishment built by the British in the 19th century. The battalion was later converted to an air force residential quarters, and now lies just south of Metro Adlabs. It is also the name of a railway station on the Mumbai suburban railway on the Western Railway railway line. Marine Lines was also the name of the road on which Bombay Hospital and Liberty Cinema stand. It is now known as V Thackersey Marg. Marine Drive is the famous promenade near the station. Marine Drive has one of the finest Art Deco Residential Buildings facing the sea. Near the station there is a Muslim cemetery and a municipal crematorium; Chandanwadi. Adjoining the station is the famous Marine Drive flyover; the only link to Marine Drive over the tracks from Princess Street beginning to end. New Marine Lines is the area just south of the station near Churchgate. It is home to a number of offices including the UTI, R.O.C. , Customs (Marine and Preventive Wing), Income Tax office and various other Governmental agencies.

Nagpur

Nagpur ( pronunciation ) is the second capital and the third largest city of the Indian state of Maharashtra after Mumbai and Pune. It is the 9th largest urban agglomeration in India and the largest city in Vidarbha Region. Nagpur is the seat of the annual winter session of the Maharashtra state assembly, "Vidhan Sabha". It is a major commercial and political centre of the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra. In addition, the city derives political importance from being the headquarters for the Hindu nationalist organisation RSS and an important location for the Dalit Buddhist movement. According to a survey by ABP News-Ipsos, Nagpur has been identified as the best city in India by topping the liveability, greenery, public transport, and health care indices. Nagpur has the best literacy rate, 93.13%, among cities with more than 20 lakhs population in India. It is famous for the Nagpur Orange and is known as the "Orange City" for being a major trade centre of oranges cultivated in the region. The city was founded by the Gonds and later became a part of the Maratha Empire under the royal Bhonsale dynasty. The British East India Company took over Nagpur in the 19th century and made it the capital of the Central Provinces and Berar. After the first reorganisation of states, the city lost its status as the capital. Following the informal "Nagpur Pact" between political leaders, it was made the second capital of Maharashtra. Nagpur is also called the "Tiger Capital of India" as it connects many tiger reserves in India to the world. It is among the important cities for the information technology sector in Maharashtra. Nagpur is located in the centre of the country with the Zero Mile marker indicating the geographical centre of India.

Prabhadevi

Prabhadevi is a small up-scale southern neighbourhood of Mumbai, situated between the Shivaji Park Residential Zone to the north and Worli to the south and the Arabian Sea to the west. It is a thriving residential district with high-rise buildings built in recent years such as Beaumonde, Sumer Trinity Towers, and Inder Tower, Silver Dunes, Anand Chaya and Star Apartments. One of the major landmark is the Siddhivinayak Temple dedicated to Lord Ganesha, which attracts hundreds of devotees everyday, Tuesday being the main day of prayer. Prabhadevi BMC School is also located here, and the Kandewadi children's Crematorium is near the seafront. Prabhanagar is a cosy warm group of residences one of the early settlements in Prabhadevi. Patel Mansion is also one of the oldest chawl in Prabhadevi located at Khedgally.

Powai

Powai is a suburban neighbourhood located in the north-east of Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. It is situated on the banks of Powai Lake, and is bounded by the hills of Vikhroli Parksite to the south-east, Chandivali to the south-west, the L.B.S. Marg to the north-east and the Sanjay Gandhi National Park to the north beyond the lake. The Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road, one of the city's busiest thoroughfares linking the western and eastern suburbs, passes through Powai, and the place also hosts thousands of devotees every year during the Ganesh Chaturthi festival for the visarjan processions. Powai is served by Mumbai's only airport, located 5 km away; and by the Vikhroli and Kanjur Marg railway stations on the Central line. Originally a central village, Powai has grown prolifically and exponentially in recent years to become one of Mumbai's most upmarket commercial and residential hubs. The Hiranandani Gardens, an integrated residential township, is one among the many residential complexes located here along with a number of luxury hotels, mega stores and the offices of several commercial institutions, such as L&T Realty, Sanofi, Amazon, J P Morgan, TCS, Credit Suisse, Jardine Loyd Thompson, JP Morgan,Nomura, CRISIL, Deloitte, Bayer among others. Larsen and Toubro, one of India's oldest multinational conglomerates, has a manufacturing plant at Powai. The Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, established in 1958 and currently the second oldest campus of the Indian Institutes of Technology as well as the National Institute of Industrial Engineering, established in 1963 are both located here, as is a campus of the Bombay Scottish School, Mumbai. Powai is also home to residential complexes of the Income Tax department, Customs and NTPC, as well as those of ex-servicemen. Powai is also Mumbai's start-up hub, with young entrepreneurs starting off from incubation cells set up by institutes like IIT Bombay from the tech industry, and other sectors setting their bases there, causing the area to be referred to as India's Powai Valley. Some of the start-ups in Powai Valley include JustRide, Housing, TinyOwl, Toppr, HolaChef, Bewakoof, Logic Roots, Care24, Flyrobe, NearFox, Belita, CredR, and Crispy Games. As a result of the mixture of various communities living together, the suburb has one of the city's most cosmopolitan and modernized cultures. The place has a vibrant night-life, and shoots for several Bollywood as well as Hollywood movies, such as Kalyug, Ghajini, Slumdog Millionaire, Haseena Maan Jaayegi etc. have taken place here. The Hiranandani Gardens are also known for their neo classical architectural style, and the area boasts of having some of the tallest residential buildings in suburban Mumbai.

Lonar

Lonar is a World famous place for the Salt water lake of size of 1.8 km diameter, created by the impact of meteor some 50000 years ago. Lonar town gets its name from this lake. This is a municipal council in Buldhana district of the division of Buldhana of the region of Vidarbha in the Indian state of Maharashtra. It is a taluka of the district of Buldhana and is located near Mehkar. It is known for Lonar crater and Lonar Lake, which is located at 19°58′N 76°30′E. This such an important place doesn't get the due recognition & due numbers of visitors, due to sheer negligence. There is a 12 inch sweet water stream, which got into surface after this impact, keeps pouring the water into lake. Lake still remains as sultry as Sea water. Lonar is situated around 360 Km from Nagpur, around 100kms from Buldhana, around 100kms from Akola, 550 km from Mumbai, around 160 km from Aurangabad and around 140 km southeast of the Ajanta Caves, about 4½ hours drive via Buldhana.

Nerul

Nerul is a residential and commercial node of the city of Mumbai. It consists of more than 50 sectors. Nerul East houses odd sectors while Nerul West includes even sectors. It is one of the biggest, and most populated residential nodes of the city. Nerul along with Seawoods is the second most developed zone of New Mumbai after Vashi. Nerul along with Seawoods-Dharave is one of the most expensive, promising and developing realty locales in the satellite city. Nerul has a huge floating and residential population moving in from South Mumbai and the western suburbs, making it more upmarket by the day. Nerul however still has parts with an intrinsic rustic feel about it. The estimated population of Nerul is around 10,00,000. Nerul is the only node that has two railway stations namely Nerul railway station and Seawoods–Dharave railway station. About one lakh people travel from Nerul and 50,000 from Seawoods–Dharave railway station.

Paithan

Paithan pronunciation formerly Pratiṣṭhāna, is a city and a municipal council in Aurangabad district, Maharashtra, India. It was the capital of the Satavahana dynasty, which ruled from the second century BCE to the second century CE. It is one of the few inland towns mentioned in the famous first-century Greek book, the Periplus of the Erythraean Sea. Paithan is located 56 kilometres south of present-day Aurangabad on the Godavari River. Mungi Village, Paithan was the birthplace of Nimbarka, the founder of the Nimbarka Sampradaya tradition of Vaishnavism. Paithan was also the home of the great Marathi saint Eknath; people flock yearly to his shirne during the time of the Paithan yatra, also known as the Nath Shashti. The town is mostly famous today for its saris — the Paithani beautiful silk saris that sport intricately embroidered gold or silver borders. It is also a famous Digambar Jain atishay kshetra. A beautiful Black coloured Sand Idol of 20th Jain Tirthankar, Bhagwan Munisuvratnath is installed in temple here. It is believed that all wishes are fulfilled by praying here. Jnaneshwar Udyan is a famous garden developed on the lines of Brindavan Gardens, Mysore . The city is home to many noted personalities like Shankarrao Chavan, Yogiraj maharaj Gosavi, Balasaheb Patil.

Aurangabad

Elephanta Caves

The Elephanta Caves are a network of sculpted caves located on Elephanta Island, or Gharapuri in Mumbai Harbour, 10 kilometres to the east of the city of Mumbai in the Indian state of Maharashtra. The island, located on an arm of the Arabian Sea, consists of two groups of caves—the first is a large group of five Hindu caves, the second, a smaller group of two Buddhist caves. The Hindu caves contain rock cut stone sculptures, representing the Shaiva Hindu sect, dedicated to the Lord Shiva. The rock cut architecture of the caves has been dated to between the 5th and 8th centuries, although the identity of the original builders is still a subject of debate. The caves are hewn from solid basalt rock. All the caves were also originally painted in the past, but now only traces remain. The main cave was a Hindu place of worship until Portuguese rule began in 1534, after which the caves suffered severe damage. This cave was renovated in the 1970s after years of neglect, and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987 to preserve the artwork. It is currently maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India .

Igatpuri

Igatpuri is a town and a Hill Station municipal council in Nashik District in the Indian state of Maharashtra. It is located in the Western Ghats. Igatpuri railway station lies in Nashik District between Mumbai and Nashik Road on the Central Railway. Igatpuri is known for Vipassana International Academy, where ancient technique of meditation is taught called Vipassana. Trains on this route usually change locomotives on this stop and also change the guards and drivers. The place is one of the best places to visit in Maharashtra in monsoon. It is a hill station on busy Mumbai-Agra NH-3 only 45 km from Nasik and 130 km from Mumbai. Igatpuri is a major railway station with all trains stopping for 20 minutes as there is a change of locomotive engine owing to the electric current running the engine. There is a major presence of the Indian Railways within this small town. This is the station from where 25 KV AC traction on OHE begins for CR trains starting from Mumbai CST. The station is famous for its scenic surroundings, wada pao and idlis sold by vendors to commuters traveling in the train. The exit of Igatpuri railway station signals the proximity of Mumbai on down route. Holy Family Convent High School is the oldest English medium school run in the town. Other English school "Wonderland High School & Jr College". There's an Arts, commerce & Science College. Igatpuri is surrounded by the highest peaks in Sahyaadri i.e. Western Ghats, most of them are forts built in Satavahana dynasty. It's heavenly for trekkers and hikers, Most Indian movie outdoor scenes specially songs are shot in Igatpuri region. Igatpuri is a place of significance in terms of Vipassana meditation. The International Centre for Vipassana meditation called Dhammagiri, supposedly the largest Vipassana Center, is located here. This region consists of those mountains which are accessed by trains going from Mumbai CST to Kasara and Igatpuri. Local trains only go up to Kasara, and don't climb the Thal Ghat from Kasara to Igatpuri. Hence to go to Igatpuri, one has to either take a long distance train or reach Kasara by a suburban train and then take a bus uphill.
