Powai

Powai is a suburban neighbourhood located in the north-east of Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. It is situated on the banks of Powai Lake, and is bounded by the hills of Vikhroli Parksite to the south-east, Chandivali to the south-west, the L.B.S. Marg to the north-east and the Sanjay Gandhi National Park to the north beyond the lake. The Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road, one of the city's busiest thoroughfares linking the western and eastern suburbs, passes through Powai, and the place also hosts thousands of devotees every year during the Ganesh Chaturthi festival for the visarjan processions. Powai is served by Mumbai's only airport, located 5 km away; and by the Vikhroli and Kanjur Marg railway stations on the Central line. Originally a central village, Powai has grown prolifically and exponentially in recent years to become one of Mumbai's most upmarket commercial and residential hubs. The Hiranandani Gardens, an integrated residential township, is one among the many residential complexes located here along with a number of luxury hotels, mega stores and the offices of several commercial institutions, such as L&T Realty, Sanofi, Amazon, J P Morgan, TCS, Credit Suisse, Jardine Loyd Thompson, JP Morgan,Nomura, CRISIL, Deloitte, Bayer among others. Larsen and Toubro, one of India's oldest multinational conglomerates, has a manufacturing plant at Powai. The Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, established in 1958 and currently the second oldest campus of the Indian Institutes of Technology as well as the National Institute of Industrial Engineering, established in 1963 are both located here, as is a campus of the Bombay Scottish School, Mumbai. Powai is also home to residential complexes of the Income Tax department, Customs and NTPC, as well as those of ex-servicemen. Powai is also Mumbai's start-up hub, with young entrepreneurs starting off from incubation cells set up by institutes like IIT Bombay from the tech industry, and other sectors setting their bases there, causing the area to be referred to as India's Powai Valley. Some of the start-ups in Powai Valley include JustRide, Housing, TinyOwl, Toppr, HolaChef, Bewakoof, Logic Roots, Care24, Flyrobe, NearFox, Belita, CredR, and Crispy Games. As a result of the mixture of various communities living together, the suburb has one of the city's most cosmopolitan and modernized cultures. The place has a vibrant night-life, and shoots for several Bollywood as well as Hollywood movies, such as Kalyug, Ghajini, Slumdog Millionaire, Haseena Maan Jaayegi etc. have taken place here. The Hiranandani Gardens are also known for their neo classical architectural style, and the area boasts of having some of the tallest residential buildings in suburban Mumbai.

Jogeshwari Caves

The Jogeshwari Caves are some of the earliest Hindus and Buddhist cave temples sculptures located in the Mumbai suburb of Jogeshwari, India. The caves date back to 520 to 550 CE.These caves belongs to the last stage of the Mahayana Buddhist architecture. According to historian and scholar Walter Spink, Jogeshwari is the earliest major Hindu cave temple in India and the largest. The caves are located off the Western Express Highway, and are surrounded by encroachments. The caves are used as a temple by the encroachers. The caves are classified as endangered as sewage and waste enter the premises. They are also infested with bats. The caves are accessed through a long flight of stairs into the main hall of this cavernous space. It has many pillars and a Lingam at the end. Idols of Dattatreya, Hanuman and Ganesh line the walls. There are also relics of two doormen. The cave also has a murti and footprints of goddess Jogeshwari, whom the area is named after and also considered as a Kuladevi to some Maharathi people. Some of the migrants from Gujarat known as Gujarati people also started worshipping the goddess as they settled in Mumbai for business.

Mahakali Caves

The Mahakali Caves are a group of 19 rock-cut monuments built between 1st century BCE and 6th century CE. This Buddhist monastery is located in the western suburb of Andheri in the city of Mumbai in western India. Monument consists of two groups of rock-cut caves 4 caves more to the north-west and 15 caves more to the south-east. Most caves are viharas and cells for monks, but Cave 9 of south-eastern group is chaitya. Caves in north-west have been created mainly in 4th 5th century, while south-eastern group is older. Monument contains also rock-cut cisterns and remnants of other structures. Caves are carved out of a solid black basalt rock. The largest cave at Mahakali has seven depictions of the Buddha and figures from Buddhist mythology but all are mutilated. Click here to see photosphere of the city from atop of Mahakali Caves. It is located near the junction between the Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road and SEEPZ. The road that connects these monuments to Andheri Kurla Road is named Mahakali Caves Road after it. The caves are located on a hill that overlooks the Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road and the SEEPZ++ area. A Direct bus run by the BEST links the caves with Andheri station. The caves are in danger of being encroached upon.

Global Vipassana Pagoda

The Global Vipassana Pagoda is a Meditation Hall near Gorai, North-west of Mumbai, India. The Pagoda was inaugurated by Pratibha Patil, then President of India on 8 February 2009. It is built on donated land on a peninsula between Gorai creek and the Arabian Sea. The pagoda is to serve as a monument of peace and harmony. The Global Vipassana Pagoda has been built out of gratitude to the Buddha, his teaching and the community of monks practicing his teaching. Its traditional Burmese design is an expression of gratitude towards the country of Myanmar for preserving the practice of Vipassana. The shape of the pagoda is a copy of the Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon, Myanmar. It was built combining ancient Indian and modern technology to enable it to last for a thousand years.

National Stock Exchange of India

The National Stock Exchange of India Limited is the leading stock exchange of India, located in Mumbai. NSE was established in 1992 as the first demutualized electronic exchange in the country. NSE was the first exchange in the country to provide a modern, fully automated screen-based electronic trading system which offered easy trading facility to the investors spread across the length and breadth of the country. NSE has a total market capitalization of more than US$1.65 trillion, making it the world’s 12th-largest stock exchange as of 23 January 2015. NSE's flagship index, the CNX Nifty,the 50 stock index, is used extensively by investors in India and around the world as a barometer of the Indian capital markets. NSE was set up by a group of leading Indian financial institutions at the behest of the government of India to bring transparency to the Indian capital market. Based on the recommendations laid out by the government committee, NSE has been established with a diversified shareholding comprising domestic and global investors. The key domestic investors include Life Insurance Corporation of India, State Bank of India, IFCI Limited IDFC Limited and Stock Holding Corporation of India Limited. And the key global investors are Gagil FDI Limited, GS Strategic Investments Limited, SAIF II SE Investments Mauritius Limited, Aranda Investments Pte Limited and PI Opportunities Fund I. NSE offers trading, clearing and settlement services in equity, equity derivatives, debt and currency derivatives segments. It is the first exchange in India to introduce electronic trading facility thus connecting together the investor base of the entire country. NSE has 2500 VSATs and 3000 leased lines spread over more than 2000 cities across India. The exchange was incorporated in 1992 as a tax-paying company and was recognized as a stock exchange in 1993 under the Securities Contracts Act, 1956, when P. V. Narasimha Rao was the Prime Minister of India and Manmohan Singh was the Finance Minister. NSE commenced operations in the Wholesale Debt Market segment in June 1994. The capital market segment of the NSE commenced operations in November 1994, while operations in the derivatives segment commenced in June 2000.

Gilbert Hill

Gilbert Hill is a 200 ft monolith column of black basalt rock at Andheri, in Mumbai, India. The rock has a sheer vertical face and was formed when molten lava was squeezed out of the Earths clefts during the Mesozoic Era about 66 million years ago. During that era, molten lava had spread around most of the Indian states of Maharashtra, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh, covering an area of 50,000 square kilometres . The volcanic eruptions were also responsible for the destruction of plant and animal life during that era. According to experts, this rare geological phenomenon was the remnants of a ridge and had clusters of vertical columns in nearby Jogeshwari which were quarried off two decades ago. These vertical columns are similar to the Devils Tower National Monument in Wyoming, and the Devils Postpile National Monument in eastern California, USA. Gilbert Hill was declared a National Park in 1952 by the Central Government under the Forest Act. In 2007, after years of lobbying by geologists, the hill was declared a Grade II heritage structure by the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai, and all quarrying and other activities around the monument were prohibited. Over the period of time, Gilbert Hill has faced severe erosion problems too. Atop the rock column, two Hindu temples, the Gaodevi and Durgamata temples, set in a small garden, are accessed by a steep staircase carved into the rock. The hill offers a panoramic view of suburban Mumbai. Efforts are being made to convert Gilbert Hill into a tourist attraction and include it as stop on tour of Mumbai by Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation.

Juhu Aerodrome

Juhu Aerodrome is located in Juhu, an upmarket residential suburb of Mumbai, India. It is used by small General Aviation aircraft and helicopters. Founded in 1928 as India's first civil aviation airport, Juhu served as the city's primary airport during and up to World War II. In 1948, commercial operations were moved to the much larger RAF Santacruz which was built 2 km east of Juhu aerodrome during the war. In 1932, JRD Tata landed at the Juhu aerodrome, inaugurating India's first scheduled commercial mail service. Today, the aerodrome handles all helicopter operations out of Mumbai. It also hosts the Bombay Flying Club and several executive and light aircraft and gliders. In 2010, the Airports Authority of India , which runs the airport, proposed to extend the runway 08/26 into the sea to allow larger aircraft to land, however permission for this was denied by the Ministry of Environment and Forests. With the New Coastal Regulation Zone rules of 2011 permitting roads on stilts, the Airports Authority of India announced in January 2012 that it would once again pursue its plan of extending the runway at Juhu Aerodrome into the sea.

Mehboob Studio

Mehboob Studio is an Indian film studio and recording studio in Bandra , Mumbai, founded by director and producer Mehboob Khan in 1954 who owned Mehboob Productions and is most known for films like Mother India , which won the Filmfare Awards for Best Film and Best Director and was a nominee for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. It is spread over 20,000 square yards and includes five shooting stages. It soon become popular with directors like Guru Dutt, Chetan Anand and Dev Anand. In following decades it was used by Manmohan Desai extensively. A recording studio was added in the 1970s and both remain in use. The studio was used from November 2010 to January 2011 for the first-ever exhibition of sculptor Anish Kapoor in India; the other part was held at the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi.

Techfest

Techfest is the annual science and technology festival of Indian Institute of Technology Bombay. It also refers to the independent body of students who organize this event along with many other social initiatives and outreach programs round the year. Techfest is known for hosting a variety of events that include competitions, exhibitions, lectures as well as workshops. Started in 1998 with the aim of providing a platform for the Indian student community to develop and showcase their technical prowess, it has now grown into Asia's Largest Science and Technology Festival with a footfall of 1.65 lakhs in its latest edition. The activities culminate in a grand three day festival event in the campus of IIT Bombay which attracts people from all over the World, including students, academia, corporates and the general public.

Marve Island

Marve Island was among a group of islands that lay to the west of Salsette island near Mumbai, India. Manori and Gorai on Dharavi Island lay to its north while Erangal and Madh on Madh Island lay to its south. Marve remained separate from the mainland Salsette till as late as 1808, while by the year 1882, access to the island was possible by merely walking across the tidal inlets during low tide. Rapid urbanisation on Salsette island has resulted in the formation of dry land between Marve and Salsette. Marve is now connected to the mainland by a causeway that is part of the Malad - Marve road and to Madh island via a small bridge over a creek at Marve's southern tip. The Manori Creek flows into the Arabian sea at the northern tip of Marve. Ferry services to Manori operate from Marve Beach. Further south along the western coast lies Aksa Beach. The beach though popular with tourists is not safe for swimming due to the swift currents caused by the creek flowing into the sea resulting in several cases of drownings. The Resort, a Five Star hotel, is located at Aksa on the Madh- Marve road. The Indian Navy operates a Logistics Training establishment called INS Hamla on Marve. Access to a section of beach adjoining the naval premises is restricted for civilians. The Defence School Kendriya Vidyalaya at INS Hamla, was established in August 1972.

Mini Sabarimala

Mini Sabarimala, situated on a hillock surrounded by hills and valleys within the precincts of NCH Colony, Kanjurmarg, Mumbai, is the first ancient Ayyappa Temple outside Kerala State. A tiny stream originating from the vicinity adds the sanctity and beauty of environment. As revealed by the famous astrologer Shri Karuvatta Kochugovindan, there was a big and beautiful Devi temple and a small Ayyappa temple at this place, where today stands the temple of Shree Mini Sabarimala. These temples were destroyed by the foreign invaders. The remnants of these can be seen even today. The invaders also killed the priests of these temples. Since then the devotees used to worship Shri Ayyappa in the same dilapidated temple. Therefore after the formation of the temple trust in 1960, a need was felt to perform certain purification rites or the Dosha Parihara Kriyas like Astha Mangala Deva Prashanam. These rites were the prerequisites for starting the main construction work and re-installation of images. Accordingly in 1980, after performing Ashta Mangala Deva Prashanam, the temple trust started the construction work as per the details in Tantra Vidhi and Thachu Shastra of Kerala. They reconstructed the main Ayyappa temple in the center and temples of Devi Bhuvaneshvari and Shri Ganesha to its left and right respectively. Sarpakavu or the Nagadevatas were also installed in the Northeastern corner. Punahpratishtha or the reinstallation of Shri Ayyappa image and other images made of Panchaloha was done on Pushya Nakshatra day of the Kerala Hindu calender, in the Midhunam month by Shri Pullamvazhi Devan Narayanan Namboothiri, Pullamvazhi illam, Haripad, the famous Vedic and Tantra scholar from Kerala. During the year 2000, again the Ashta Mangala Deva Prashanam was performed. Various Poojas and Homams and Kalashabhishekam etc. were performed by Mahatanthri Shri Devan Vasudevan Namboothiri.
