Top Attractions in Pune

Pataleshwar

The Pataleshwar Cave Temple is a rock-cut cave temple, carved out in the 8th century in the Rashtrakuta period. It is located in what is now Pune, in the state of Maharashtra, India. It was originally situated outside the town, but the city limits have expanded so that it is now located on the downtown Jangli Maharaj Road. It has been declared as a protected monument by the government. The temple, made of basalt rock, is dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva. The sanctum a cube-shaped room about 3–4 metres on each side houses a linga the symbol of Shiva and there are two smaller cells on each side. In front of the cave is a circular Nandi mandapa, its umbrella shaped canopy supported by massive square pillars. This mandapa is one of the peculiar structures of Pataleshwar. The temple was left incomplete, possibly because of a fault line found at the back of the sanctum sanctorum, which made the further sculpting unsafe, or political upheaval resulting in loss of patronage. Still in use, the linga is anointed with ghee and yogurt. A brass temple bell hangs outside the basalt entryway.

Huzurpaga

Huzurpaga is the oldest girls' high school in Maharashtra, India. The school was established by the Maharashtra Girls Education Society in 1885. The school's founders included noted social reformer Justice Ranade and historian Dr. R. G. Bhandarkar. The school is officially called HHCP Girls High School in honor of a benefactor, the Maharaja, His Highness Chintamanrao Patwardhan of Sangli. The school is located in the main commercial area of Laxmi Road in Pune. The school location was historically used as horse stables for the Maratha Cavalry during the days of Peshwa rule. At present, the school offers instruction from grades 5 to 10 to nearly 2,400 girls. The school's medium of instruction is mainly Marathi with some students being offered the chance to learn science and maths through the English language. The latter option is called semi-English curriculum. In the S.S.C. exams conducted by Maharashtra government for 10th grade students, the school consistently achieves a pass rate in the high 90s percentage. The school also offers a boarding option for out-of-town students.

Raja Dinkar Kelkar Museum

The Raja Dinkar Kelkar Museum is in Pune, Maharashtra, India. It contains the collection of Dr. Dinkar G. Kelkar, dedicated to the memory of his only son, Raja. The three-storey building houses various sculptures dating back to the 14th century. There are also ornaments made of ivory, silver and gold, musical instruments, war weapons and vessels. The collection was started around 1920 and by 1960 it contained around 15,000 objects. In 1962, Dr. Kelkar handed his collection to the Department of Archaeology within the Government of Maharashtra. The museum now holds over 20,000 objects of which 2,500 are on display. These consist of mainly Indian decorative items from everyday life and other art objects, mostly from the 18th and 19th centuries. The museums collection depicts the skills of the Indian artists of the time. The door frames, vessels, ornaments, musical instruments, paintings and carvings represent outstanding examples of their art. One part of particular interest is the "Mastani Mahal". Raja Kelkar made an attempt at depicting the palace of Mastani, with its remnants. A beautiful piece in the collection is the carving of Lord Ganesha on the seed; the idol of Lord Ganesha is shown with his trunk towards the left, which is quite rare and difficult to build or draw.

Chaturshringi Temple

The Chaturshringi Temple also spelt as Chaturshrungi Temple is a Hindu temple in the city of Pune in Maharashtra state of India. The temple is located on the slope of a hill on Senapati Bapat Road. It is said to have been built during the reign of the Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The temple is looked after by Chaturshringi Devasthan trustees. Chaturshringi is a mountain with four peaks. The Chaturshringi temple is 90 feet high and 125 feet wide and is a symbol of power and faith. One has to climb more than 100 steps to reach the shrine of Goddess Chaturshringi. In the temple premises there are also temples of Goddess Durga and Lord Ganesh. This includes eight miniature idols of Ashtavinayaka. These small temples are located on the four separate hillocks.Also includes the temple of vetal maharaj at the baner pashan end.

Savitribai Phule Pune University

Savitribai Phule Pune University formerly the University of Pune ( Marathi: पुणे विद्यापीठ), is a university in Pune in western India, founded in 1948. Spread over a 411 acres (1.66 km2) campus, the university is home to 46 academic departments. It has been given the highest "A" rating by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) for its overall performance. The university is named after Savitribai Phule, an Indian social reformer who is known for her contribution towards empowerment and emancipation of women through education. The university has now been ranked 3rd in India by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings The university has affiliated colleges, departments, and research institutes, which are primarily in Pune.

Darshan Museum

The Darshan Museum is a museum in Pune, India, dedicated to the noted Sindhi Saint and scholar, Sadhu T. L. Vaswani. It is a biographical museum that offers an insight into the life and therefore the teachings of Sadhu Vaswani. The museum is built on a space of 10000 sq. feet; on the first floor of the Sadhu Vaswani Mission Building. A journey into Sadhu Vaswanis life and activities, the museum creates an entertaining, educative and moving experience for the soul, through a series of immersive spatial experiences rich in audio, video and multimedia, culminating in the darshan of the humble kutiya, where he spent his last years. The museum is also essentially a repository of his teachings – in the form of interactive and participatory exhibits engaging the visitors, young and old alike. This museum has been made by using a vast palette of museum based technologies; like real life mannequins, graphic panels, holographic screens, interactive, audio-visual material, films, et al. The narrative and the dialogues, in the sound and light format, make it a very emotive experience; as opposed to the written format. This museum is facilitated by ushers who guide visitors thru the 8 zones in this museum, each zone has various experiences from the life and teachings of the Great Master, in the narrative. Visitors have a choice of 2 different languages, viz Hindi and English. The museum was inaugurated by famous Bollywood actor Aamir Khan on 1 August 2011. At the function he went on to felicitate the people who contributed majorly to the project and held a candid question and answer session with revered J. P. Vaswani. The Sadhu Vaswani Mission is a charitable organisation based in Pune with branches all over the world. Originally known as the The Brotherhood Association it was renamed to Sadhu Vaswani Mission upon the demise of its founder and spiritual head, Sadhu T. L. Vaswani. The organisation is well known for its philanthropic work in the fields of education, healthcare, rural development, spiritual upliftment and feeding of the poor through its community kitchens. Its current spiritual head is noted humanitarian, educationist, philanthropist, poet and modern saint, J. P. Vaswani who is affectionately called Dada by his followers.

Bund Garden

Just 2 km from the Pune Railway Station lies this popular retreat for people of all ages. Known today as the "Mahatma Gandhi Udyan" a reference to the existing bridge that leads to the Gandhi National Memorial, Bund Garden, was originally envisaged as a mini dam. Built by Phiroze Jamshedji Jeejeebhoy, one of the longest serving members of the Bombay Stock Exchange, it served as a source of irrigation water for the under-privileged. Offering something for everyone, Bund Garden is a favorite haunt for those looking for a quiet, scenic place close to Mother Nature that helps one relax, rejuvenate and get re-energized. Avid joggers throng the area during the early mornings, for whom an exclusive jogging track has been added in the vicinity. Take a boat ride, while enjoying the splendid view of the garden. Sit down under the shades of a tree with a book in your hand. Laze around during the evenings while taking a stroll. Arrange a picnic with family and friends. Watch the migratory birds take flight during winters, or pay a visit to the nearby food joints serving scrumptious paani puri, bhel puri, ragda patty and sandwiches. For the kids, the Park has a separate section replete with see-saws and swings. Frequently, magic shows and horse rides are arranged within the premises to keep both the kids and their parents entertained.

Gayakwadwada

Gayakwadwada is the name of a large edifice in Pune, India which was built by the Sardar Gayakwad family as a residential place for it. Sayajirao Gayakwad, the prince of Baroda state, would occasionally stay there. Bal Gangadhar Tilak bought the place from Sayajirao in 1905 to serve as an office building for his Kesari and Maratha newspapers. Tilak lived in a part of Gayakwada, and the place was occasionally used by Indian nationalists for their nightlong discussions concerning overthrow of British colonial rule over India. (Tilak had popularized the annual Ganesh Chaturthi festival in Pune and Maharashtra --as the means to generating nationalist spirit among people in Maharashtra—by initiating the festival in the courtyard of Gayakwadwada.) The edifice currently houses the offices of Kesari and mementos of Tilak, including his writing desk, original letters, and documents; and the first India national flag unfurled by Madame Cama.

Bharati Vidyapeeth

Bharati Vidyapeeth is a Deemed university and a group of higher educational institutions established in Pune, India, in 1964 by Indian politician and educationist Patangrao Kadam. Bharati Vidyapeeth has campuses across the country at New Delhi, Navi Mumbai, Pune, Solapur, Kolhapur, Sangli, Karad, Satara, and Panchgani. It runs more than 78 schools and 60 institutions of higher education, including those of professional education. Among these are colleges of Medicine, Dentistry, Ayurveda, Homeopathy, Nursing, Pharmacy, Engineering, Management, Hotel Management, Catering Technology, Environment Science and Agriculture etc. On April 26, 1996 the Government of India, on the recommendation of the University Grants Commission, granted the status of "Deemed to be University" to a cluster of 12 institutions of Bharati Vidyapeeth.

The Center for Development Studies and Activities, , is a research and post graduate teaching institution located in Pune, India. Co - Founded by the architect and urban planner Christopher Charles Benninger and Geographer and Sustainable Development Planner Aneeta Gokhale Benninger in 1976, the institute became well known for its pioneering work in decentralized planning, micro-level planning, and watershed management. The institute has carried out policy analysis for the World Bank, United Nations, various central ministries of the Government of India, the Government of Sri Lanka, the Royal Government of Bhutan, the Asian Development Bank and various countries in Asia. The Institute offers a Master's degree in Development Planning and Administration, a Masters of Science in Development Planning and Administration and programs leading to the Doctorate in Philosophy. The Institute is affiliated with the University of Pune, the Indian Council of Social Science Research, and other research organizations. The CDSA is located on a 15-acre campus, designed by the founder director, which is widely published as an example of Critical Regionalism.
