Belene

Belene is a town in Pleven Province, Northern Bulgaria. It is the administrative centre of the homonymous Belene Municipality. The town is situated on the right bank of the Danube river, close to the town of Svishtov. As of December 2009, it has a population of 8,905 inhabitants. Belene was proclaimed a town in 1964, which is celebrated every year in the first week of September with a market and cultural events. The place is best known for the Belene prison on Belene Island where thousands of innocent Bulgarians found their death during the communist dictatorship, and as the proposed site of Bulgaria's second nuclear power plant, which has been under construction 7 kilometres east of the town until it was interrupted in 1990 due to the severe economic crisis that followed the fall of communism in the country. There are plans to start construction again as a replacement for reactors 3 and 4 at Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant, which Bulgaria shut down as a condition for EU membership. The total capacity of the two reactors will be 2,000 MW. The main confessions in the town are Roman Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy, with two Roman Catholic and one Orthodox church being present. The Catholic Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary was built in 1860, the Eastern Orthodox Church of St George in 1874 and the Catholic Church of Saint Anthony of Padua was constructed in 1893. Belene was the focal point for the feature documentary film The Mosquito Problem and Other Stories by Andrey Paounov The film features many of the town's colourful characters, highlighting their daily plight of a nuclear plant of empty promises and a year-round mosquito epidemic. Belene Cove in Livingston Island in the South Shetland Islands, Antarctica is named after Belene.

Gigen

Gigen is a village in northern Bulgaria, part of Gulyantsi Municipality, Pleven Province. It is located near the Danube River, close to the place where the Iskar River empties into it, opposite the Romanian town of Corabia. Gigen is most famous for being built on the site of the important Roman colony of Oescus. The extensive ruins are located in the northwestern part of the village and were first associated with the ancient colony in the end of the 17th century. A bridge, built or reconstructed by Constantine I and named Constantine's Bridge in his honour, linked Oescus with Sucidava across the Danube in the 4th century. Gigen is also known for an anti-Bogomil inscription in Old Bulgarian dating to the 10th century, the rule of Tsar Peter I of Bulgaria. The text was discovered in the old village church, inscribed on a stone block 85 centimetres in width. According to the scientifically accepted reading, the text of the inscription is as follows: As of December 2009, Gigen has a population of 2,192 inhabitants. It lies at 43°42′N 24°29′E, at 39 m above sea level.

Svetlin Rusev Donative Exhibition

The Svetlin Rusev Donative Exhibition is a permanent art exhibition in Pleven, Bulgaria, including over 400 works of Bulgarian and foreign art donated by the noted Bulgarian artist and collector Svetlin Rusev. The exhibition occupies the three-storey historic building of the former public baths built in the 1900s and commissioned to Nikola Lazarov, who combined Neo-Byzantine, Neo-Moorish and Ottoman elements in its design. It served as the citys public baths until 1970, and has been home to the exhibition since 1984, when Rusev donated 322 works of his collection of paintings and sculptures, in 1999 adding 82 more. Works of the best-known Bulgarian artists from the early 20th century are exhibited on the first storey. These include Zlatyu Boyadzhiev, Tsanko Lavrenov, Sirak Skitnik, Kiril Petrov, Bencho Obreshkov, Dechko Uzunov, Vladimir Dimitrov, etc. The second storey mainly features contemporary Bulgarian painters, such as Nikola Manev, Vesa Vasileva, Encho Pironkov, Georgi Bozhilov, but also the oldest painting in the gallery, a 17th-century work by an unknown French author, as well as a painting by Vienna Secession artist Josef Bauer. On the third storey, occupying the buildings towers, one can see not only a collection of works of leading Bulgarian engravers such as Iliya Beshkov, Vladimir Dimitrov and Sidoniya Atanasova, but also famous Western European artists like Pablo Picasso, Francisco Goya, Honoré Daumier, Marc Chagall, Maurice Denis, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Salvador Dalí, Renato Guttuso and Eugène Delacroix, as well as small sculptures of Auguste Rodin and Edgar Degas.

Park Lavrov

Park Lavrov is a memorial park in Pleven Province, Bulgaria, dedicated to the Russian and Finnish soldiers who died in the Siege of Plevna and the Battle of Gorni Dabnik during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–1878. The park, which lies some 25 kilometres west of Pleven in the vicinity of the village of Gorni Dabnik, was organized in 1950–1954. The park was named in honour of Imperial Russian General Vasily Nikolayevich Lavrov who perished in the Battle of Gorni Dabnik. Park Lavrov was organized around the mass graves of some 3,500 Russian and Finnish soldiers who died in the Battle of Gorni Dabnik. The park was built under V. Tiholov, who provided the architectural design, and A. Vodopyanov, who arranged the park. The park was entirely reconstructed in 1977, when new monuments were erected. In 2001, the monuments and alleys were renovated as part of the Beautiful Bulgaria programme. An Orthodox chapel dedicated to Saint George was built in 2004. The park features ossuaries, monuments to the Leib Guard Moscow, Pavlovsky, Izmaylovsky and Grenadier Regiments and the Third Finnish Infantry Battalion, as well as an open-air exhibition of 19th-century Russian cannons.

Kaylaka

Kaylaka is a large park and protected area south of Pleven, Bulgaria, situated in a Karst valley. The park is spread over 10 km² and is surrounded by sheer cliffs that suggest favourable conditions for rock climbing. The ruins of the Roman fortress of Storgosia are located in Kaylaka, as well as ponds and reservoirs with boats and pedalos, a swimming pool, hotels, cafés, restaurants, discothèques and playgrounds. Arguably the most important figure with connection to the park is General Lieutenant Ivan Vinarov, the first chairman of an initiative committee which set up the Kaylaka Peoples Park at the place of the Sokol Hunting Park in 1946. Under Vinarov the protected park territory was enlarged almost four times and several reservoirs were constructed. The parks name stems from the Ottoman Turkish kayalık, meaning "a rocky place".

Persina Nature Park

Persina Nature Park is a wetland area along the Bulgarian side of the Danube that was established on December 4, 2000. Situated on the territory of three municipalities, it covers 21,762 ha . The designation of the park aims at conservation and restoration of Danube wetlands. Special attention is paid to the numerous islands and their natural status. The park is named after Persin Island, which is part of the Belene Islands Complex. It is 15 km long and 6 km wide, making it the fourth largest Danube island and the largest in Bulgaria. Another island group is located near Nikopol. Because of its uniqueness and high importance, the island group was proclaimed a Ramsar site on September 24, 2002. At 18,330 ha, it is the biggest such site in Bulgaria. The most significant ecosystems within the park are the flooded forests along the Danube and the inland marshes. In order to protect these habitats, several protected areas are established. A visitor centre for the park is located in Belene.

Belene Island

Belene Island or Persin Island is the biggest island in Bulgarian waters. The island is formed by the Danube River splitting into two branches passing north and south of it. The international frontier between Bulgaria and Romania follows the north branch of the river and therefore Belene Island is part of the Bulgarian territory. The island is 14.5 kilometres long and reaching 6 km in width; it is located in the Danube, north of the town of Belene. Belene Island is the fourth biggest Danube island: during an average tide it is 41.078 square kilometres in area. During a high tide, parts of the island are submerged. Belene Island is a part of the Belene Islands Complex and of the Persina Natural Park, a home to over 170 species of rare water birds, such as the glossy ibis, pygmy cormorant, lesser grey shrike, red-breasted goose and others. The flora of Belene Island is represented by willows, poplars and aspens; there is some arable land. The island was formed of alluvial sediments. The island is infamous for the Belene concentration camp that functioned there for detention of political prisoners between 1949-1953 and 1956-1959. The Belene Prison is still operating as a penitentiary in the western part of the island, while the eastern part is a managed natural reserve.

Belene labour camp

The Belene labour camp, also referred to as Belene concentration camp, was part of the network of forced labour camps in Communist Bulgaria. It was located on the Belene Island, between two branches of the Danube river. At the height of Valko Chervenkov's repressions in 1952, the camp had 2,323 inmates 2,248 men and 75 women. The Belene Prison is still operating as a penitentiary in the western part of the island, while the eastern part is a managed natural reserve. This camp operated officially from 1949 to 1959, though a break in deportations to Belene occurred from 1954 to 1956. Between 1985 and 1989 Turks in Bulgaria who resisted the policy of changing Turkish names and surnames to Bulgarian ones, were imprisoned in the prison on Belene. During those years, the Turkish Radio and Television Corporation broadcast a series named "Belene Adası" on the policies of the Bulgarian government against Bulgarian Turks. From 1949 onward, Evangelical Christian pastors in particular were targeted as "enemies of the State" and sent to Belene. In 1949, the infamous "Pastors' Trial" was conducted, trying 13 Protestant pastors as "spies". The men received sentences of varying lengths. Haralan Popov, who survived and later founded the mission "Door of Hope International" to bring Bibles behind the Iron Curtain, published his autobiography under the Bulgarian title "The Bulgarian Golgotha". It was later released in English as "Tortured for His Faith". The camp and some its survivors were the subject of a documentary film by German TV program ZDF Vorwärts aber nie vergessen. Ballade über bulgarische Helden ("Moving on, but Never Forgetting. A Ballad of Bulgarian Heroes" authored by Ilija Trojanow.

Medical University Pleven

Medical University Pleven is one of the five medical institutions of higher education in Bulgaria. It is the only university in Pleven and was founded in 1974 on the basis of the former regional hospital established in 1865. The university unifies a large modern preclinical base, a hospital with specialised clinics, and research sections. It has two faculties, the Faculty of Medicine covering the subjects of medicine and rehabilitation and occupational therapy, and the Faculty of Public Health covering health care, as well as a college. There are also two hostels with a total of 315 beds in two- and three-bed rooms. In 1997 the university added an English language Medicine programme designed for international students. This was the first English language medicine programme in Bulgaria. As of the 2000s, Medical University Pleven has had 4081 Bulgarian and 582 foreign students from 45 countries, and has about 750 students a year, of which half are Bulgarians and the rest foreigners, 50-60% of whom are from India. Since Bulgaria's ascension to the European Union in 2007, most international students originate from other EU member states. The instruction courses in the university are carried out in two faculties and one college: Faculty of Medicine with the speciality of Medicine; Faculty of Public Health with the following specialities: Management of Health Care; Medicinal Rehabilitation and Occupational Therapy; Health Management; Nursing Midwifery. Medical College Pleven with the following specialities: Medical Laboratory Assistant; Radiology Laboratory Assistant; Social Worker.

Pleven Panorama

Pleven Epopee 1877, more commonly known as Pleven Panorama, is a panorama located in Pleven, Bulgaria, that depicts the events of the Russian-Turkish War of 1877–78, specifically the five-month Siege of Plevna which made the city internationally famous and which contributed to the Liberation of Bulgaria after five centuries of Ottoman rule. The panorama was created by 13 Russian and Bulgarian artists and was constructed in honor of the 100th anniversary of the Pleven Epopee and was officially unveiled on 10 December 1977. The panorama expanded the already existing Skobelev Park, which is located on the site where three of the four major battles which led to the liberation of Bulgaria took place. In the first three years after its opening, 2.5 million people visited the panorama. The monument is one of nearly 200 built by the people of Pleven in tribute to the battle and to the nearly 35,000 lives lost.

Storgosia

Storgosia was a road station of Ancient Rome located in the vicinity of modern Pleven, north-central Bulgaria, in the modern Kaylaka Park. It accommodated detachments of Legio I Italicas Novae garrison. The station grew to become a fortress in Late Antiquity due to Gothic and other Barbarian raids after 238. 31,000 m² were fortified in the beginning of the 4th century with a 2.20 m-wide defensive wall. Archaeological excavations have also discovered two gates and three defensive towers, as well as residential buildings, a large 4th-century basilica and a public granary. The fortress existed until the end of the 6th century, when the settlement of the Slavs apparently led to its abandonment and during the rule of the Ottoman Empire the fortress was practically destroyed, so that the stones could be used for the construction of a wall around the Turkish barracks in Pleven.
