Top Attractions in Pleven

Svetlin Rusev Donative Exhibition

The Svetlin Rusev Donative Exhibition is a permanent art exhibition in Pleven, Bulgaria, including over 400 works of Bulgarian and foreign art donated by the noted Bulgarian artist and collector Svetlin Rusev. The exhibition occupies the three-storey historic building of the former public baths built in the 1900s and commissioned to Nikola Lazarov, who combined Neo-Byzantine, Neo-Moorish and Ottoman elements in its design. It served as the citys public baths until 1970, and has been home to the exhibition since 1984, when Rusev donated 322 works of his collection of paintings and sculptures, in 1999 adding 82 more. Works of the best-known Bulgarian artists from the early 20th century are exhibited on the first storey. These include Zlatyu Boyadzhiev, Tsanko Lavrenov, Sirak Skitnik, Kiril Petrov, Bencho Obreshkov, Dechko Uzunov, Vladimir Dimitrov, etc. The second storey mainly features contemporary Bulgarian painters, such as Nikola Manev, Vesa Vasileva, Encho Pironkov, Georgi Bozhilov, but also the oldest painting in the gallery, a 17th-century work by an unknown French author, as well as a painting by Vienna Secession artist Josef Bauer. On the third storey, occupying the buildings towers, one can see not only a collection of works of leading Bulgarian engravers such as Iliya Beshkov, Vladimir Dimitrov and Sidoniya Atanasova, but also famous Western European artists like Pablo Picasso, Francisco Goya, Honoré Daumier, Marc Chagall, Maurice Denis, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Salvador Dalí, Renato Guttuso and Eugène Delacroix, as well as small sculptures of Auguste Rodin and Edgar Degas.

Medical University Pleven

Medical University Pleven is one of the five medical institutions of higher education in Bulgaria. It is the only university in Pleven and was founded in 1974 on the basis of the former regional hospital established in 1865. The university unifies a large modern preclinical base, a hospital with specialised clinics, and research sections. It has two faculties, the Faculty of Medicine covering the subjects of medicine and rehabilitation and occupational therapy, and the Faculty of Public Health covering health care, as well as a college. There are also two hostels with a total of 315 beds in two- and three-bed rooms. In 1997 the university added an English language Medicine programme designed for international students. This was the first English language medicine programme in Bulgaria. As of the 2000s, Medical University Pleven has had 4081 Bulgarian and 582 foreign students from 45 countries, and has about 750 students a year, of which half are Bulgarians and the rest foreigners, 50-60% of whom are from India. Since Bulgaria's ascension to the European Union in 2007, most international students originate from other EU member states. The instruction courses in the university are carried out in two faculties and one college: Faculty of Medicine with the speciality of Medicine; Faculty of Public Health with the following specialities: Management of Health Care; Medicinal Rehabilitation and Occupational Therapy; Health Management; Nursing Midwifery. Medical College Pleven with the following specialities: Medical Laboratory Assistant; Radiology Laboratory Assistant; Social Worker.

Pleven Panorama

Pleven Epopee 1877, more commonly known as Pleven Panorama, is a panorama located in Pleven, Bulgaria, that depicts the events of the Russian-Turkish War of 1877–78, specifically the five-month Siege of Plevna which made the city internationally famous and which contributed to the Liberation of Bulgaria after five centuries of Ottoman rule. The panorama was created by 13 Russian and Bulgarian artists and was constructed in honor of the 100th anniversary of the Pleven Epopee and was officially unveiled on 10 December 1977. The panorama expanded the already existing Skobelev Park, which is located on the site where three of the four major battles which led to the liberation of Bulgaria took place. In the first three years after its opening, 2.5 million people visited the panorama. The monument is one of nearly 200 built by the people of Pleven in tribute to the battle and to the nearly 35,000 lives lost.

Storgosia

Storgosia was a road station of Ancient Rome located in the vicinity of modern Pleven, north-central Bulgaria, in the modern Kaylaka Park. It accommodated detachments of Legio I Italicas Novae garrison. The station grew to become a fortress in Late Antiquity due to Gothic and other Barbarian raids after 238. 31,000 m² were fortified in the beginning of the 4th century with a 2.20 m-wide defensive wall. Archaeological excavations have also discovered two gates and three defensive towers, as well as residential buildings, a large 4th-century basilica and a public granary. The fortress existed until the end of the 6th century, when the settlement of the Slavs apparently led to its abandonment and during the rule of the Ottoman Empire the fortress was practically destroyed, so that the stones could be used for the construction of a wall around the Turkish barracks in Pleven.
