Norwich

Norwich is a city on the River Wensum in England. It is the regional administrative centre and county town of Norfolk. During the 11th century, Norwich was the largest city in England after London, and one of the most important places in the kingdom. Until the Industrial Revolution, Norwich was the capital of the most populous county in England. The urban or built-up area of Norwich had a population of 213,166 according to the 2011 Census. This area extends beyond the city boundary, with extensive suburban areas on the western, northern and eastern sides, including Costessey, Taverham, Hellesdon, Bowthorpe, Old Catton, Sprowston and Thorpe St Andrew. The parliamentary seats cross over into adjacent local government districts. 132,512 people live in the City of Norwich and the population of the Norwich Travel to Work Area is 282,000 . Norwich is the fourth most densely populated local government district within the East of England with 3,480 people per square kilometre . In May 2012 Norwich was designated as Englands first UNESCO City of Literature.

Great Yarmouth

Great Yarmouth, often known to locals as Yarmouth, is a coastal town in Norfolk, England. It is located at the mouth of the River Yare, 20 miles east of Norwich. The town has been a seaside resort since 1760, and is the gateway from the Norfolk Broads to the North Sea. For hundreds of years it was a major fishing port, depending mainly on the herring fishery, but its fishing industry suffered a steep decline in the second half of the 20th century, and has now all but disappeared. The discovery of oil in the North Sea in the 1960s led to a flourishing oil rig supply industry, and today it services offshore natural gas rigs. More recently, the development of renewable energy sources, especially offshore wind power, has created further opportunities for support services. A wind farm of 30 generators is within sight of the town on the Scroby Sands. The town has a beach and two piers.

Breckland

The Breckland as a landscape region is an unusual natural habitat of England. It comprises the gorse-covered sandy heath that lies mostly in the north of the county of Suffolk but also in the south of Norfolk. An area of considerable interest for its unusual flora and fauna, it lies to the south east of another unusual habitat, The Fens, and to the south west of The Broads. The typical tree of this area is the Scots Pine. The Brecks are one of the driest places in England. The area of Breckland has been substantially reduced in the twentieth century by the impact of modern farming and the creation in 1914 of Thetford Forest. However substantial areas have been preserved, not least by the presence of the British Army on the Stanford Battle Area. The Breckland is one of the few areas in England where the rare and shy golden pheasant may be seen in the wild. During the Prehistoric period the Breckland was mined for flint, evidence for which can be found at Grimes Graves just outside the town of Thetford in Norfolk. The word 'Breck' is medieval and was defined as being an area of heathland broken up for cultivation before being allowed to retreat back into wilderness. Up until 200 years ago, much of it consisted of open heathland. The Brecklands today provide a tourist attraction as well as an area of scientific and geographical interest. The Breckland landscape region has given its name to Breckland District, a local government district that contains most of Norfolk's portion of the Breckland. Parts of Forest Heath District and St Edmundsbury Borough cover the Suffolk portion. The Great Eastern Pingo Trail is 8 miles of tracks and paths exploring the eastern edge of the Breckland area. The trail takes in the commons at the villages of Thompson and Stow Bedon, and heathland at Breckles and Great Hockham. Thompson Water, an artificial lake, and the woodland at Thompson Carr also form part of the walk. The name of the trail comes from the former Great Eastern Railway and the large number of collapsed pingos found in the area. The trail may be accessed as a detour from the Peddars Way long distance footpath. It is a Local Nature Reserve.

Castle Acre

Castle Acre is a village and civil parish in the English county of Norfolk. The village is situated on the River Nar some 4 miles north of the town of Swaffham. It is 15 miles east of the town of King's Lynn, 33 miles west of the city of Norwich, and 103 miles from London. The village is best known today for the twin ruins of Castle Acre Castle and Castle Acre Priory, which lie immediately to the east and west of the village respectively. Both were founded soon after the Norman Conquest by William de Warenne, the first Earl of Surrey. At its heyday, Castle Acre played an important role in the affairs of the State, with many visits from royalty. Castle Acre itself was once a fortified town and still possesses one of its gates, the Bailey Gate. When first established, Castle Acre was one of the finest examples of Norman town planning in the country, and much of this can still be seen. The civil parish has an area of 13.18 km2 and in the 2001 census had a population of 799 in 370 households, the population increasing to 848 at the 2011 Census. The parish shares boundaries with the adjacent parishes of Rougham, Great Massingham, West Acre, South Acre, Newton by Castle Acre and Lexham. The parish falls within the district of King's Lynn and West Norfolk. Local government responsibilities are shared between the parish, district and county councils. Castle Acre forms part of the North West Norfolk constituency, represented by Henry Bellingham . Norfolk County Council is responsible for roads, some schools, and social services, and the county councillor for the Gayton division, including Castle Acre, is Richard Toby Coke . The village lies some 0.5 miles west of the A1065 Mildenhall to Fakenham road, but is clearly visible from the road. The hamlet of Fiddler's Green lies to the northeast of the village.

Strumpshaw

Strumpshaw is a village and civil parish in the English county of Norfolk. It is located on the northern bank of the River Yare around 6 miles south-east of Norwich within The Broads National Park. The parish covers an area of 11.69 km2 and had a population of 602 in 245 households at the 2001 census. For the purposes of local government, it falls within the district of Broadland. The village lies a little distance from the river, on the slopes of Strumpshaw Hill, the highest area of land in the Norfolk Broads. Because of its elevation, Strumpshaw hosted, from the late 1790s through to the mid-1810s, a repeater station in the shutter telegraph chain linking the Admiralty in London with Great Yarmouth. The Wherry Lines railway line running between Norwich and Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft runs through the parish. Trains call at Buckenham railway station at weekends only. The small villages of Buckenham and Hassingham, formally both parishes in their own right, lie within the civil parish of Strumpshaw.

Horsham St. Faith

Horsham St Faith is a village in Norfolk, England. The village lies close and to the east of the A140 road and is 5 miles north of Norwich and some 8 miles south of Aylsham It takes its name from the River Hor, which runs through it on its way from Horsford to Horstead; and a Benedictine priory, founded in honour of St. Faith that, until the dissolution of the monasteries, stood there. It is near Norwich International Airport, which began in 1939 as RAF Horsham St. Faith and home of the City of Norwich Aviation Museum. Administratively it is in the civil parish of Horsham St Faith and Newton St Faith within the district of Broadland. It has the remains of a motte and bailey castle, on the Horsford side of the A140 road, reached by following a track to the north of Church Street, which joins Horsford and Horsham St. Faith. On 17 October from the early 12th century until 1872 it played host to one of the country's largest cattle fairs. This fair was held to the south of Spixworth Road around Bullock Hill and Calf Lane. At the beginning of the 20th century, the Manor House and the land that in 1939 became RAF Horsham St. Faith, was owned by John Thomas Spurrell, youngest son of Richard James Spurrell, of Thurgarton. Inside the church at Horsham St. Faith there is a memorial to his eldest son, John Francis Brabazon Spurrell, who was killed by buffalo at Kibaya, Tanganyika, in 1927.

Halvergate

Halvergate is a village and civil parish in the English county of Norfolk, north of Reedham, between the Rivers Bure and Yare, within The Broads. To the east of the village are the Halvergate Marshes, an area of drainage marsh which was the site of the first Environmentally Sensitive Area in the United Kingdom in 1987. The parish covers an area of 24.65 km2 and had a population of 468 in 202 households at the 2001 census. For the purposes of local government, it falls within the district of Broadland. The civil parish includes the village of Tunstall. The long distance footpath named the Weavers' Way passes through Halvergate, and this provides one of the few modes of access to Berney Arms. The village has a football club, Halvergate United, which plays in the Anglian Combination Premier Division, and a cricket team.

Wroxham

Wroxham is a town and civil parish in the English county of Norfolk. The civil parish of Wroxham has an area of 6.21 square kilometres and in 2001 had a population of 1532 in 666 households. The town is situated within the Norfolk Broads on the south side of a loop in the middle reaches of the River Bure. It lies in an elevated position above the Bure, between Belaugh Broad to the west and Wroxham Broad to the east or south east. Wroxham is some eight miles north-east of Norwich, to which it is linked by the A1151 road. The village and broad lie in an area of fairly intensive agriculture, with areas of wet woodland adjoining the broad and river. For the purposes of local government, the parish falls within the district of Broadland although the river, broad and their immediate environs fall within the executive area of the Broads Authority. On the northern side of the Bure is the village of Hoveton, often confused with Wroxham.

Anmer

Anmer is a small village and civil parish in the English county of Norfolk, situated about 12 miles north by north-east of the town of King's Lynn, and 35 miles north-west of the city of Norwich. The place-name 'Anmer' is first attested in the Domesday Book of 1086, where it appears as Anemere. This name derives from the Old English 'aened-mere', meaning 'duck mere or lake'. Anmer Hall, the former residence of the Duke and Duchess of Kent, is located in the village: it is linked to the nearby Sandringham estate by a long straight road known as ‘The Avenue’. In 2014 Anmer Hall was renovated as the new country home of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. 'Anmer' was the name of the horse belonging to King George V which occasioned the death of the suffragette Emily Davison at the 1913 Epsom Derby, after she stepped in front of it during the race. The civil parish has an area of 5.86 km² and in the 2001 census had a population of 63 in 29 households. For the purposes of local government, the parish falls within the district of King's Lynn and West Norfolk.[1]

Little Walsingham

Walsingham is a village in the English county of Norfolk. The village is famed for its religious shrines in honour of the Virgin Mary and as a major pilgrimage centre. It also contains the ruins of two medieval monastic houses. The civil parish, which includes the two Walsinghams, together with the depopulated medieval village of Egmere (grid reference TF 897 374), has an area of 18.98 km² and in the 2001 census had a population of 864 in 397 households, the population decreasing to 819 at the 2011 census. For the purposes of local government the parish falls within the district of North Norfolk. Walsingham became a major centre of pilgrimage. In 1061, according to the Walsingham legend, a Saxon noblewoman, Richeldis de Faverches, had a vision of the Virgin Mary in which she was instructed to build a replica of the house of the Holy Family in Nazareth in honour of the Annunciation. Her family name does not appear in the Domesday Book. When it was built, the Holy House in Walsingham was panelled with wood and contained a wooden statue of an enthroned Virgin Mary with the child Jesus seated on her lap. Among its relics was a phial of the Virgin's milk. Walsingham became one of northern Europe's great places of pilgrimage and remained so through most of the Middle Ages.

Feltwell

Feltwell is a village 10 miles west of Thetford, Norfolk, England, and is in the borough of King's Lynn and West Norfolk. Feltwell has the largest area of any parish in Norfolk. It is a thriving community. The village has a large modern primary school which was originally built during the post WW2 building period to cope with the 1946-48 "baby-boom". The original school buildings are of late vVctorian era mock perpendicular flint faced single story buildings which catered for all age groups on either side of Long Beck Road. The pubs, The Lodge originally a general grocery store and the West End, are popular spots for the village locals and there is also a Social Club. The village also has two churches St Mary's and St Nicholas together with a Methodist chapel. The street known as Long Beck as against Short Beck obtained its name from the stream (depicted on OS maps as the common bank dyke) which was spring fed from a pond in the south east corner of the new primary school site. Feltwell was virtually a sea-shore settlement during the Roman occupation, when the New Cut relief channel was excavated several Roman villas were discovered along the excavation route of the river and were injudiciously destroyed. The village a site of a busy RAF bomber command center in WW2 has other neighbouring is RAF airfields USAF, notably RAF Lakenheath and RAF Mildenhall.

Horsey

Horsey is a village and civil parish in the English county of Norfolk within The Broads National Park. It covers an area of 8.49 km2 and had a population of 99 in 40 households at the 2001 census. For the purposes of local government, it falls within the district of North Norfolk. It is situated at the end of Horsey Mere, a nature reserve. Horsey windpump is in the care of the National Trust. It was struck by lightning in the 1960s and has been beautifully restored. It is open daily during the summer months. Horsey has often taken the brunt of devastating floods and violent coastal storms and, on some notable occasions, the sea has entered the Broads, rendering the water salty and killing large numbers of wildlife. The church of Horsey All Saints is one of 124 existing round-tower churches in Norfolk. The coast next to the village, known as Horsey Dunes, is a major wildlife site. Grey Seals on Horsey Beach. During the months of November to January the colony heads on to the beach to give birth to seal pups. Creating a beautiful local attraction for many wildlife enthusiasts.
