Rijeka

Rijeka is the principal seaport and the third-largest city in Croatia . It is located on Kvarner Bay, an inlet of the Adriatic Sea and has a population of 128,624 inhabitants . The metropolitan area, which includes adjacent towns and municipalities, has a population of 245,054 . Historically, because of its strategic position and its excellent deep-water port, the city was fiercely contested, especially among Italy, Hungary, and Croatia, changing hands and demographics many times over centuries. According to the 2011 census data, the overwhelming majority of its citizens are presently Croats, along with small numbers of Bosniaks, Italians and Serbs. Rijeka is the chief city of Primorje-Gorski Kotar County. The city's economy largely depends on shipbuilding and maritime transport. Rijeka hosts the Croatian National Theatre Ivan pl. Zajc, first built in 1765, as well as the University of Rijeka, founded in 1973 but with roots dating back to 1632 School of Theology. Linguistically, apart from Croatian, the population also uses its own unique version of the Venetian language, , with an estimated 20,000 speakers among the autochtone Croats and various minorities. Historically Fiumano served as a lingua franca for the many ethnicities inhabiting the multicultural port-town.

Novi Vinodolski

Novi Vinodolski is a town on the Adriatic Sea coast in Croatia, located south of Crikvenica, Selce and Bribir and north of Senj. The population of Novi is 3,988, with a total of 5,131 people in the city administered area. The city area became a Frankopan property in the 13th century, marking the period to which the most valuable heritage is dated, including the Law codex of Vinodol. City hinterland is dominated by the Vinodol Valley, used for agriculture and winemaking. Economy of the city is dominated by tourist industry, as Novi Vinodolski is well known tourist centre situated in an area largely unaffected by other types of industry and it offers a wide variety of tourist amenities. The Vinodol Valley is also the site of a hydroelectric power plant utilizing water collected in Gorski Kotar reservoirs. Transport links of the city are substantially dependent on the nearby city of Rijeka.

Malinska

Malinska is a settlement in the northwestern part of the island Krk in Croatia and an important tourist town. It lies on the coast of the Adriatic Sea, in the picturesque bay facing Opatija and Rijeka. The municipality of Malinska-Dubašnica has 3,134 inhabitants and the settlement itself has 965 . Because of the catastrophic consequences of the privatization of the hotel complex "Haludovo", the main entity in Malinska, during the 1990s almost completely destroyed, which in turn led to the loss of many jobs. This was reflected at the population of Malinska, which decreased by one third. The settlement of Malinska is about 15 minutes from the Rijeka airport and can also be reached by car from the mainland crossing the Krk bridge. The city of Krk is located 12 km to the south. Every year on July 23 the traditional "Malinskarska Night" takes place — the day of the municipality and the feast of Saint Apollinaris, patron saint of the parish and settlement. The parish church of St. Apollinaris is located in the vicinity - Bogovići. Built in the 19th century, it dominates Malinska. The new chapel of St. Nicholas in the center of the port was consecrated in 2000.

Biserujka

Biserujka is a cave located 6 km northeast of Dobrinj, in the village of Rudine, above Slivanjska Bay, in the island of Krk, Croatia. An undistinguished stone house in the middle of a bare karst landscape hides the entrance to a cave 12 m under the surface. Although it is not very long if compared to other caves, only 110 m deep, the Biserujka cave has everything that is characteristic of karst phenomena. It has lots of typical features such as stalactites and stalagmites, and also a gallery or hall, which is suitable for the holding of concerts. However, because of the low temperature, about 13 °C, people cannot stand being there for long periods of time, so that only short musical pieces can be performed. Since 1998, the cave has been arranged for sightseeing and the hosts can take groups of 25 at a time.

Baška

Baška is a settlement and a municipality located on the south east of the island of Krk, Croatia. The village of Baška had a full-time population of 981 in the 2011 census, with 1,674 people in the greater municipality. This cultural and historical center with its old stone houses and narrow streets, has been a tourist destination since the 19th century, and has developed into a popular resort. It is known for its inscribed stone monument from 1100, for its many surrounding beaches, and its long tradition in tourism. Baška has a rich cultural and historical heritage. Highlights are the early Christian archeological site from the 5th century, the renowned Baška tablet from the year 1100 found in the Church of St. Lucy the nearby Jurandvor, the remains of a Roman settlement, as well as many historical churches and chapels. The local museum in Baška houses an ethnographic collection. The city of Baška is surrounded by woodlands and many sand and pebble beaches, most notably the 1,800-meter-long Baška beach (the Vela plaža, or “Great Beach”). Bunculuka beach is a smaller clothing optional pebble beach adjacent to the large Bunculuka naturist camping site. In the surrounding area there are 16 hiking trails with a total length of over 80 km. Medicinal and other herbs grow in abundance, including wormwood, sage, thyme, and milfoil.

Rijeka Cathedral

The St. Vitus Cathedral is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Rijeka, Croatia. The Church of St. Vitus was in Middle Ages a small and one-sided, romanesque church dedicated to the patron saint and protector of Rijeka. It had a semi-circular apse behind the altar, and covered porch. With the arrival of the Jesuits in Rijeka, the Cathedral as we see it today was founded in 1638. First, it became the Jesuits church. When the town of Rijeka became the center of the diocese, and then in 1969 the center of the archbishopric and metropolit, the representative Jesuits Church of St. Vitus became the Cathedral of Rijeka. It’s a rotunda, which is unusual in this part of Europe, with elements of baroque and Gothic, including fine baroque statuary inside. The cathedral is depicted on the reverse of the Croatian 100 kuna banknote, issued in 1993 and 2002.

Krk Cathedral

The Krk Cathedral or fully Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a cathedral in the town of Krk on the northern Adriatic island of Krk, Croatia. It is the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Krk. The church was built in the 5th or 6th century but archeological evidence suggests that the site was used by Christians as early as 4th century. The cathedral is located beneath the Krk town hill. The first documented mention of the church dates from 1186. It is a three-nave early Christian basilica which is part of a larger complex, along with the Romanesque Church of Saint Quirinus, a bell tower, the Chapel of Saint Barbara, an early Christian baptistry and an apse. As common with other churches from the same period, it is oriented east/west, with its façade facing a street which goes through the town of Krk in the north/south direction. The church is 40 meters long and interior width is 14.5 m . During several archeological excavations between 1956 and 1963 led by Andro Mohorovičić the ruins of an ancient Roman thermae dating from 1st century were discovered. Remains of a hypocaust and a tepidarium with a preserved mosaic floor tiling were uncovered. Large mosaic pieces worn out of people walking over them were found, which suggest that the site may have been used for Christian masses as early as the 4th century, before the cathedral was built. According to historical records right next to the former tepidarium a Chapel of Saint John the Baptist with a baptismal font was later built, which stood there until 1565. This implies that one of the pools of the thermae has been converted into a baptistry. Beneath the floor of the present-day Chapel of the Holy Heart of Jesus a barrel-like piscina for baptismal water was also found. The cathedrals present-day Romanesque design was created in the 11th and 12th century, around at the same time when its existence was first documented in 1186. Above the fourth interior capital there is an inscription dedicating the church to Virgin Mary, as it marks the place where the early Christian basilica used to end. This was confirmed by excavations in which foundations of the wall which closed the original basilica were found. Out of the two present-day rows of columns, the seven columns closer to the altar were originally within the old basilica. These columns were built out of stone and are not connected to capitels. Out of the total 14 columns, 12 of them feature Corinthian capitels, one is Classical and the one in the northern row closest to the altar features relief depictions of early Christian eucharist symbols, showing a fish being eaten by two birds . Based on this and the ground plan of the basilica, Mohorović dated the time its construction to the latter half of the 5th century or some time in the early 6th century. Over the course of centuries several chapels with altars were added next to the side walls of the church. Around 1450 John VII Frankopan had ordered construction of the Chapel of Saint Barbara, which has House of Frankopan coats of arms on its ceiling. In 1500 two Renaissance-style ambons were built, in 1538 the apse was extended, and then again in 1700 when the space for an organ and a choir was added. The sacristy is equipped with walnut wood furniture; a cupboard which covers the sacristy wall was made between 1697 and 1698, the 13 benches for canon were made in 1699 and a bishops throne was added in 1717. In addition to the cathedral the complex contains the Church of Saint Quirinus, the only early Christian two-story church in Croatia. The Romanesque-style church was built in front of the cathedral, out of locally mined white stone. Because of lack of space its apses face southwards and it features three semicircular apses with romanesque arcades on top. There is also the Church of Saint Margaret, dedicated to Margaret of Antioch, and a bell tower. As early Christian churches did not have bell towers, a wooden tower was added behind the sacristy at a later date. Since there was very little building space left by then, it was constructed right in front of the Church of Saint Quirinus in 1515. In 1765 it underwent a thorough restoration, and the upper part was redesigned. As part of the restoration a sculpture of an angel made in Venice was installed on top. Since then the bell tower was renovated several times, last time in 1973 when the present-day plastic angel replaced the original copper-coated wooden sculpture.

Risnjak

Risnjak is a mountain in the Risnjak National Park, in Gorski Kotar, Croatia. It belongs to the Dinaric Alps mountain range. The name of the massif probably comes from ris, the Croatian word for lynx. Another interpretation suggests that it comes from the local word risje, which is a name for a type of grass. The vegetation is very diverse. Thirty different plant communities have been recorded, of which the most common are beech and fir forests which go up to 1240 m and then are replaced by sub-alpine beeches (Fagetum croaticum subalpinum). The highest vegetation is a belt of mountain pine (Pinetum mughi croaticum). The fauna is also diverse, but has been less well researched. There are particularly many species of birds and mammals, including several types of chamois, while since 1974 the area has once again been inhabited by the ris (lynx). The highest peak of Risnjak mountain is "Risnjak" or Veliki Risnjak at 1528 m.a.s.l. (the latter name means "Big Risnjak"), and it is also the highest peak in the Risnjak National Park, and the second in Gorski kotar next to Bjelolasica. On its southern slope is located the mountain lodge called Šloserov dom, built by Josip Schlosser. The peak can be reached only on foot, from Crni Lug or from an unpaved road beginning in Gornje Jelenje (1 h). The highest peaks of Risnjak mountain are: Veliki Risnjak (1528 m), Snježnik (1506 m), Sjeverni Mali Risnjak and Južni Mali Risnjak (1448 m).

Drivenik Castle

Drivenik Castle is a castle in the hinterland of Crikvenica and Novi Vinodolski, in the northern part of the Adriatic coast, western Croatia. The castle of Drivenik is first mentioned in 1228 as one of the co-signers of the Vinodol Code. It is located near the village of Drivenik in the Vinodol region, on a high point named "Glavica" . The castle sits in front of the mountain range called ‘Križišće’ opposite Tribaljsko polje . It is located in a small village of Drivenik, near a larger village of Tribalj, around 8 km away from Crikvenica. From the 13th century the castle was the seat of the district administration, and upon the arrival of the Frankopans, their deputy Dragoljub resided there in 1288. In the 16th century the castle was expanded in size and in the style of Renaissance fortresses it received round towers on its corners. Then in 1577, the castle was ruled by the noble family Zrinski. The construction of the road in 1746 linked Drivenik to Novi Vinodolski and Bakar. This allowed the inhabitants to move from the hilltop down into the valley where present day Drivenik village developed along the roadway. Ultimately the castle was abandoned as an active settlement, only the church of Sveti Dujam and its cemetery remained as active properties. Near the castle is the chapel of St. Stephen, built probably at the end of the 16th century with its tower containing three bells. The church has three building phases: Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque. The church originally contained a late Gothic period Pieta sculpture titled the "Mourning of Christ" and a Baroque period wood carved "Golden Altar". Today both are in the Museum of Art and Crafts in Zagreb. The chapel of St. Martin is situated at the cemetery. It has Baroque frescoes dating from the 18th century. On its wall is a fresco "Taken down from the Cross". There is the Way of the Cross with four shrines near the cemetery and at its end Calvary is marked with three high crosses dating from 1768. The cemetery also contains a monument to fallen fighters from World War II. The parish church of Sveti Dujam contains three naves and a bell-tower in the front. Originally it was built with one nave, without the open bell-tower. Sveti Dujam’s bell tower was built in 1806 and the entrance beneath the bell tower was constructed in 1846. The sanctuary was decorated by Anton Cej in 1894 when the main marble altar was constructed. The church floor contains burial vaults with the remains of a prominent local family Klarić . The church underwent partial restoration in 1968. In the nearby town of Drivenik, a monument has been erected to the famous Croatian miniaturist J.J. Klović .

Čikat

Čikat is a cove on the island of Lošinj and a part of the town of Mali Lošinj. It stretches from the St. Nicholas church on the south to hotel Kredo on the north. On the west lies the sea, while the eastern end borders with town center of Mali Lošinj. This makes the cove a perfect choice for a harbor, as it is protected from all but the western winds. In 1534. the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary church was built, often called the Annunziata, it was later expanded in 1858. It is located on a cape from which local sailboats were greeted on their entrance to the harbor, so even today local captains sound the horn while passing by the cape. Čikat is also a spa projected by dr. Alfred Edler von Manussi-Montesole, an Austrian architect. Besides him, both Leopold Ritter von Schrotter and Conrad Clar shaped the todays look of the area, and there are also promenades named after all of them. In the past even three shipyards were located in the Čikat cove. Today this area is the site of many villas which were owned by Austrian nobles, while now those villas are turned into hotels and residencies, of which the most well known are Karolina, Diana, Saborka and hotel Kredo. Majority of the hotels on the island are located in this area. There is also a camping ground covered with the forest in the cove with the same name. Local nautical school professor Ambroz Haračić devoted most of his life to studying local flora and fauna and helped foresting the cove. For his efforts, a statue was erected on the south part of the cove. Čikat is also a sports center, with waterpolo, diving and sailing clubs, tennis courts, local football club and more.

Učka

The Učka is a mountain range that rises behind Opatija riviera, on the Istrian peninsula, in northwestern Croatia. It forms a single morphological unit together with the Ćićarija range which stretches from the Bay of Trieste to Rijeka. Učka is a limestone massif with numerous areas of karst, stretching for 20 km from the Poklon Pass to Plomin Bay, and is between 4 and 9 km wide. It differs from all the other coastal mountains in Croatia because of its abundant vegetation on the seaward side. Best known are the forests of sweet chestnuts in the area around Lovran. Učkas highest peaks are considered nature reserves and memorial areas. The highest peak, Vojak, is located at 1396 meters above sea level. From it there is a magnificent view over the whole of Istria, the Bay of Trieste, the Julian Alps and the Adriatic islands, right down to Dugi Otok. The subject of a degree of local folklore, Učka is visible from much of the peninsula and is snow-capped some months of the year. The town of Opatija is said to have derived its popularity as a resort in Imperial Austria because it is located "in the shade" of Mt. Učka, which by legend shields it from the fierce Mediterranean heat in summertime. The area of Učka is designated a nature park, a kind of protected area in Croatia.

Lake Vrana

Lake Vrana, in the centre of Cres island, is a fresh water lake, 1.5 km wide and about 4.8 km long. The town of Cres has been supplied with drinking water from the lake since 1953, and the towns of Mali and Veli Lošinj received their supplies ten years later. It was thought at one time that the water in the lake was linked to some mainland source by underground streams, but it has since been established that in fact it originates from the atmosphere. The lake is one of cryptodepression characteristics. It was formed by very heavy tectonic movements along a longitudinal relaxation fault which now contains 220 million m3 of fresh water. Comprising an area of 5.8 square kilometres, the depression reaches a depth of around 60 m below the sea level, but its surface lies about 14 m above it, oscillating by about half a metre, meaning the maximum depth is 74 metres . It is surrounded by mountains like the 483 m high Mont Elmo and Mount Perskra of 429 m. The lake contains pike, tench and carp. There are also eels, but their origin is still unclear. The village of Vrana, above the lake, is located 15 kilometres south of the town of Cres.
