Louisville

Louisville is the largest city in the Commonwealth of Kentucky and the 30th-most populous city in the United States. It is one of two cities in Kentucky designated as first-class, with the other being the states second-largest city of Lexington. Louisville is the historical seat and, since 2003, the nominal seat of Jefferson County. Louisville was founded in 1778 by George Rogers Clark and is named after King Louis XVI of France, making Louisville one of the oldest cities west of the Appalachian Mountains. Sited beside the Falls of the Ohio, the only major obstruction to river traffic between the upper Ohio River and the Gulf of Mexico, the settlement first grew as a portage site. It was the founding city of the Louisville and Nashville Railroad, which grew into a 6,000-mile system across 13 states. Today, the city is known as the home of the Kentucky Derby, Kentucky Fried Chicken, the University of Louisville and its Louisville Cardinals athletic teams, Louisville Slugger baseball bats, and three of Kentuckys six Fortune 500 companies. Its main airport is also the site of UPSs worldwide air hub. Since 2003, Louisvilles borders have been coterminous with those of Jefferson County because of a city-county merger. The official name of this consolidated city-county government is the Louisville/Jefferson County Metro Government, abbreviated to Louisville Metro. Despite the merger and renaming, the term "Jefferson County" continues to be used in some contexts in reference to Louisville Metro, particularly including the incorporated cities outside the "balance" which make up Louisville proper. The citys total consolidated population as of the 2014 census estimate was 760,026. However, the balance total of 612,780 excludes other incorporated places and semiautonomous towns within the county and is the population listed in most sources and national rankings. The Louisville-Jefferson County, KY-IN Metropolitan Statistical Area, sometimes also referred to as Kentuckiana, includes Louisville-Jefferson County and 12 surrounding counties, seven in Kentucky and five in Southern Indiana. As of 2014, the MSA had a population of 1,269,702, ranking 44th nationally.

Lexington

Lexington, consolidated with Fayette County, is the second-largest city in Kentucky and the 61st largest in the United States. Known as the "Horse Capital of the World", it is located in the heart of Kentuckys Bluegrass region. It is one of two cities in Kentucky designated as first-class, with the other being the states largest city of Louisville. In the 2014 U.S. Census Estimate, the citys population was 310,797, anchoring a metropolitan area of 489,435 people and a combined statistical area of 708,677 people. Lexington ranks tenth among US cities in college education rate, with 39.5% of residents having at least a bachelors degree. It is the location of the Kentucky Horse Park, The Red Mile and Keeneland race courses, Rupp Arena, the worlds largest basketball-specific arena, Transylvania University, the University of Kentucky and Bluegrass Community Technical College.

Bowling Green

Bowling Green is a city in and the county seat of Warren County, Kentucky, United States. As of 2014, its population of 62,479 made it the third-most-populous city in the state after Louisville and Lexington; its metropolitan area had an estimated population of 165,732; and the combined statistical area it shares with Glasgow has an estimated population of 218,870. Founded by pioneers in 1798, Bowling Green was the provisional capital of Confederate Kentucky during the American Civil War. The city was the inspiration for the 1967 Everly Brothers song "Bowling Green"; and today it is the home of numerous manufacturers including General Motors and Fruit of the Loom. The Bowling Green Assembly Plant has been the source of all Chevrolet Corvettes built since 1981. Bowling Green is also home to the states second-largest public university, Western Kentucky University. In 2014, Forbes Magazine listed Bowling Green as one of the Top 25 Best Places to Retire in the United States.

Mammoth Cave

Mammoth Cave National Park is a U.S. National Park in central Kentucky, encompassing portions of Mammoth Cave, the longest cave system known in the world. The official name of the system is the Mammoth-Flint Ridge Cave System for the ridge under which the cave has formed. The park was established as a national park on July 1, 1941. It became a World Heritage Site on October 27, 1981, and an international Biosphere Reserve on September 26, 1990. The parks 52,830 acres are located primarily in Edmonson County, Kentucky, with small areas extending eastward into Hart County and Barren County. It is centered on the Green River, with a tributary, the Nolin River, feeding into the Green just inside the park. With 400 miles of surveyed passageways Mammoth Cave is by far the worlds longest known cave system, being over twice as long as the second-longest cave system, Mexicos Sac Actun underwater cave.

Georgetown

Georgetown is a home rule-class city in Scott County, Kentucky, in the United States. The 2014 population was 31,653 per the United States Census Bureau. It is the 9th-largest city by population in the U.S. state of Kentucky. It is the seat of its county. It was originally called Lebanon when founded by Rev. Elijah Craig and was renamed in 1790 in honor of President George Washington. It is the home of Georgetown College, a private liberal arts college. Georgetown is part of the Lexington-Fayette, KY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The citys growth began in the mid-1980s, when Toyota built Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky, its first wholly owned United States plant, in the city. The plant, which currently builds the Camry, Camry Hybrid, Venza, and Avalon automobiles, and will build the Lexus ES beginning in 2015, opened in 1988. It is the largest building in terms of acres covered under one building in the United States, with over 200 acres occupied. The city previously served as the training camp for the NFLs Cincinnati Bengals.

Maysville

Maysville is a home rule-class city in Mason County, Kentucky, United States and is the seat of Mason County. The population was 9,011 at the 2010 census, making it the 40th-largest city in Kentucky by population. Maysville is on the Ohio River, 66 miles northeast of Lexington. It is the principal city of the Maysville Micropolitan Statistical Area, which includes Mason and Lewis counties. Two bridges cross the Ohio from Maysville to Aberdeen, Ohio: the Simon Kenton Memorial Bridge built in 1931 and the William H. Harsha Bridge built in 2001. On the edge of the outer Bluegrass Region, Maysville was historically important in Kentuckys settlement. Frontiersmen Simon Kenton and Daniel Boone were among the citys founders. Later, Maysville was an important port on the Ohio River for the northeastern part of the state. It exported bourbon whiskey, hemp and tobacco, the latter two produced mainly by African American slaves before the Civil War. It was once a center of wrought iron manufacture, sending ironwork downriver to decorate the buildings of Cincinnati, Ohio, and New Orleans, Louisiana. Other small manufacturers also located early in Maysville and manufacturing remains an important part of the modern economy. Under the leadership of Henry Means Walker, Maysville was home to one of the largest tobacco auction warehouses in the world for most of the 20th century. Maysville was an important stop on the Underground Railroad, as the free state of Ohio was just across the river. abolitionist author Harriet Beecher Stowe visited the area in 1833 and watched a slave auction in front of the court house in Washington, the original seat of the county and now a historic district of Maysville. She included the scene in her influential novel Uncle Toms Cabin, published in 1852. The Underground Railroad was very active in Maysville, Kentucky because slaves only had to cross the Ohio River into Ohio to be free. One of the most successful "conductors" to work in the area was Josiah Henson. Josiah Henson is believed to be credited with helping thirty slaves from the area around Maysville, Kentucky into Ripley, Ohio, and then from there, into Cincinnati, Ohio and giving them their freedom. One of the stops of the Underground Railroad in Maysville, Kentucky was a place known as the Armstrong House. The annual Rosemary Clooney Music Festival was founded by the singer in 1999 to benefit the restoration of the Russell Theatre. Past performers at the festival include Debby Boone, Rita Coolidge, Michael Feinstein, Roberta Flack, Alison Krauss, The Pointer Sisters, Michael Bolton, and Linda Ronstadt. The Ledger Independent is the local newspaper and is published five days a week. WFTM-AM and WFTM-FM are the primary local radio stations in Maysville. The AM station plays adult standards, and the FM plays adult contemporary music.

Nicholasville

Nicholasville is a home rule-class city in Jessamine County, Kentucky, in the United States. It is the seat of its county. The population was 28,015 during the 2010 U.S. Census, making Nicholasville the 11th-largest settlement in the state. In the last few decades, Nicholasville has experienced rapid growth; the population increased 380% between 1970 and 2010. An official city report published in 2009 declared that "the Welcome mat is out in Nicholasville" for new residents and businesses, and claimed this growth to be "the envy of other cities across the state." The city serves as both a residential area for Lexington-area commuters and as an employment and shopping center for central Kentucky. The city is home to the Kentucky Wine Vine Fest. The annual festival showcases wines from commercial vineyards and amateur winemakers from across Kentucky and the surrounding region, and has been named the "Official Wine Festival of Kentucky" by the Kentucky state legislature. The event is unhindered by inclement weather, pledging to be held "rain or shine".
