Cathedral Church of Saint Michael and All Angels

The Cathedral Church of Saint Michael and All Angels (formerly The St. Michael's Parish Church), is an Anglican church located on St. Michael's Row, two blocks east of National Heroes Square; at the centre of Bridgetown, Barbados. The Cathedral is the tallest of the Anglican (Church of England)'s houses of worship within Barbados. Originally consecrated in 1665, and then rebuilt in 1789, it was elevated to Cathedral status in 1825 with the appointment of Bishop Coleridge to head the newly created Diocese of Barbados and the Leeward Islands. The first parish church to be built was the St. Michael's Parish Church, which was located where the St. Mary's Anglican Church now stands. The original St. Michael's Parish Church was a small wooden church constructed between 1660 and 1665. Destroyed by a hurricane in 1780, the church was rebuilt nine years later. The church was later damaged in the great hurricane of 1831 but not destroyed. When the Diocese of Barbados was established, the St. Michael's Parish Church became the St. Michael's Cathedral, with Bishop William Hart Coleridge as its first bishop in 1825. The St. Michael Cathedral is made of coral stone with a beautiful tower and stunning stained glass windows. Inside the church is a marble baptismal font dating to the 17th century. The Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament was added in 1938 and features a roof covered in wallaba heartwood shingles and a Canterbury Cross on the northern wall. The St. Michael's Cathedral continues to be used as a place of regular worship. In the 21st century, it is working to raise funds to restore the building.

George Washington House

George Washington House in Barbados is a historic house where the future first U.S. President George Washington visited, in 1751. He was 19 years old at the time, and with his ailing half-brother, Lawrence Washington. In 2011, the property was designated as a UNESCO protected property within the World Heritage Site of Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison area. Barbados apparently is the only country outside the present United States that George Washington ever visited. In 1997, during an official visit to Barbados with her husband, President William Clinton, First Lady Hillary Clinton unveiled a plaque outside the house that reads: On the occasion of his visit to Barbados this plaque was presented by President William Jefferson Clinton to The Right Honourable Owen S. Arthur, Prime Minister, and to the People of Barbados in a spirit of friendship and goodwill which binds our two countries and in recognition that George Washington, the first President of the United States of America, lived in this house during his visit to this fair country in 1751. The house is owned and maintained by the Barbados National Trust.

National Heroes Square

National Heroes Square, formerly Trafalgar Square, is located in Bridgetown, the capital and principal commercial centre of the island-nation of Barbados. The square lies along Upper Broad Street and is on the northern shore of the Careenage, found directly in the centre of Bridgetown. A fixture of the Square on the west-end includes a bronze statue of British naval hero Admiral Lord Nelson overlooking the Square. The statue in Bridgetown was erected unveiled on March 22. 1813 to commemorate the anniversary of the British Royal Navys victory in the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. The local statue of Lord Nelson in Bridgetown was erected approximately 27 years before the more famous Nelsons Column which is located in London, Englands Trafalgar Square. As a point of reference, Nelson has served as the decided upon centre of Bridgetown. During the colonial years many distances on the island from Bridgetown have historically been measured from the base of Nelsons statue. The current name of National Heroes Square was adopted on 22 April 1999 and officially took effect on from 28 April 1999. In 2009 the David Thompson-Government opened up a proposal to rename the area as "Parliament Square". and to completely redevelop and reconfigure the Squares layout.

Bridgetown Heliport

Bridgetown Heliport, is found in the city of Bridgetown, Saint Michael on the island of Barbados. The heliport is situated on the shores of Carlisle Bay roughly 12.9 km from Sir Grantely Adams International Airport in neighbouring Christ Church. The heliport was formerly managed by Bajan Helicopters Ltd. Its customers and utilisations included: Government departments, oil companies, shipping lines, cruise lines, public utility companies and emergency Medical evacuations. Occasionally Bajan Helicopters operated chartered flights to other various destinations covering South America and the Eastern Caribbean. Typically these flights were to the islands of Antigua, Grenada, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Montserrat, Saint Kitts, Saint Lucia, Sint Maarten, and Saint Vincent. Upscale holidaying clientele in Barbados had also come to rely on Bajan Helicopters to take them to the heliport at the Port Saint Charles marina, The Sandy Lane Hotel, and the Royal Westmoreland Resort upon arrival at the Grantley Adams International Airport.

Needham's Point Lighthouse

Needhams Point Lighthouse is a lighthouse located in the southwest coast of Barbados. Needhams Point lighthouse is one of four still existent historic lighthouses in Barbados. Unlike the others it has a stationary rather than rotating beacon. The octagonal lighthouse was constructed in 1855 at the southern end of Carlisle Bay. It is currently non-functional and partially restored by the Hilton Hotel which owns the lighthouse and surrounding grounds. Because of the proximity of a large block of rooms, the lighthouse can only be seen from the beach to the South of the hotel. During its period of active use the lighthouses focal plane stood at 43 ft / 13 m and flashed at an 8 second interval. Owing to the stationary nature of the lights the lighthouse lens was half red and half green to allow sailors to know whether they were port or starboard side of Carlisle Bay.

Chamberlain Bridge

The Chamberlain Bridge is a bridge in Bridgetown, the capital and largest city of the nation of Barbados. In 1872, it was a swing bridge across the marine inlet channel of the inner basin of the Careenage at Carlisle Bay. The out moded steel structure was dismantled and rebuilt in 2005–2006 as a lifting bridge with the state-of the-art modern technology of an all-composite single-leaf bascule design. This design is a counterweighted bridge span that pivots upward, permitting pleasure craft to pass through an inlet channel. The bridge was built using fibre-reinforced plastic, which is lighter, long lasting and non-corrosive. There are two bridges in use in Bridgetown. The Charles Duncan ONeal Bridge is large and modern in design, commencing from the street east of National Heroes Square, while Chamberlain Bridge is the more "decorative humpbacked bridge" built to replace the original swing bridge after the Great Hurricane with funds generated through the efforts of the then British Colonial Secretary, Joseph Chamberlain .

Parliament Buildings

The Parliament Buildings (also known as The Public Buildings, or more rarely Parliament House), is the seat of the Parliament of Barbados. Built between 1870 and 1874, the buildings have been the meeting place for both chambers of Parliament since 16 June 1874, and a former site of Colonial administration of Barbados. It consists of two buildings in the neo-Gothic architectural style, and are reminiscent of the Victorian era of Great Britain. The buildings are situated along the north bank of the Constitution River and are bordered by Upper Broad Street and National Heroes Square to the south; strategically at the heart of the capital city Bridgetown. Prior to the establishment of the buildings the legislature met at the Town Hall building on Coleridge Street. In 1989 the Public Buildings were officially renamed the Parliament Buildings by Act of Parliament. In 2011 both buildings were designated as UNESCO protected properties within the World Heritage Site of Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison area.

Queen Elizabeth Hospital

The Queen Elizabeth Hospital (Q.E.H.) is located in Barbados' capital city Bridgetown, which is located in the parish of Saint Michael. The hospital is the main General Hospital for the southern part of the island. The hospital can perform most surgeries, and specialised care includes the areas of: gynaecology, paediatrics, obstetrics, cardiac surgery, plastic surgery, psychotherapy, radiology, radiography and ophthalmology. The Q.E.H. boasts also having a series of operating theaters. The Q.E.H. is a 600-bed complex lying in the Eastern section of Bridgetown, it can be found along the southeast shore of the Careenage canal. The current hospital building was constructed in 1963-1964, and officially opened on 14 November 1964. In December 2004, the Barbados Ministry of Health disclosed that based on foreign-investment into the country, there is a future possibility that genetic re-constructive surgery may be performed at the Q.E.H. The Accident and Emergency Department, formerly known as QEH Casualty, was transformed in 1990 into the new A&E Department. The department was pioneered by Dr Irvine Brancker and Dr Van Tyne. It opened with a team of initially 12 junior doctors and 2 consultants. Presently, there are 20 doctors in the department. As the busiest department in the hospital, they attend to approximately 45,000 patients each year. Offering patient care on par with some first world countries, Dr Chaynie Williams, the first female head of the department, applauds the skill set of her staff and also notes that the A&E improvement programme has put measures in place to make the visit to A&E a more comfortable one, including the addition of patient advocates, a redesign of the physical space, improvements to staffing compliments, improved outreach and efficiencies plus a concerted, ongoing effort to reduce waiting times. In 2006 it was stated that the Government of Barbados was spending $112 million (US$56 million) annually running the hospital. In 2008 the former Minister of Health Dr. Jerome Walcott said that the current hospital which is over 40 years old should be replaced by a new state of the art hospital complex. He classified it as nonsensical to spend over $400 million (US$200 million) on an extension of the current facility saying that it may cost upwards of $600 million (US$300 million) in the end. He went on to suggest the current QEH might be better off turned into a nursing home. Later in 2011 the government's Donville Inniss gave the figure of around $800 million to build a new Hospital for Barbados. It was stated the government will need to review several factors including cost(s) and possible locations. PAHO has rated the current facility as a Category B hospital facility.

Barbados National Stadium

Barbados National Stadium was officially opened on October 23, 1970. It is a multi-use outdoor stadium in Waterford, St. Michael, Barbados. Situated approximately 4.3 km northeast of Bridgetown it is located off Highway 3. The stadium is currently used mostly for football matches. The stadium holds 15,000. In 2006, FIFA condemned the national football stadium of Barbados though the country was hoping to demolish and rebuild the ground before its 2010 World Cup qualification campaign begins. In 2011 the Barbadian government estimated the cost to re-engineer the stadiums' running track at 2 million dollars. No date has been determined when the funding could be sourced or the works could be carried out. But Barbados' past World Championships in Athletics gold-medalist Ryan Brathwaite has publicly condemned the current state of the National Stadiums' track infrastructure. In 2010 the stadium started hosting the Joseph Payne Memorial Classic, a competitive event among Barbadian secondary school students.
