Manaus

Manaus or Manaós before 1939 or Lugar de Barra do Rio Negro, is the capital city of the state of Amazonas in northern Brazil. It is situated at the confluence of the Negro and Solimões rivers. With a population of more than 2.0 million it is the most populous city of Amazonas, and also the most populous city of the Amazon rainforest. The city was founded in 1693-94 as the Fort of São José do Rio Negro. It was elevated to a town in 1832 with the name of "Manaus", an altered spelling of the indigenous Manaós peoples, and legally transformed into a city on October 24, 1848, with the name of Cidade da Barra do Rio Negro, Portuguese for "The City of the Margins of Black River". On September 4, 1856 it returned to its original name. Manaus is located in the middle of the Amazon rainforest, and access to the city is primarily by boat or airplane. This isolation helped preserve both the nature as well as the culture of the city. The culture of Manaus, more than in any other urban area of Brazil, preserves the habits of Native Brazilian tribes. The city is the main entrance to visit the fauna and flora of the Brazilian Amazon. Few places in the world afford such a variety of plants, birds, insects, and fishes. It was known at the beginning of the century, as "Heart of the Amazon" and "City of the Forest". Currently its main economic engine is the Industrial Pool of Manaus, the famous Free Economic Zone. The city has a free port and an international airport. Its manufactures include electronics, chemical products, and soap; there are distilling and ship construction industries. Manaus also exports Brazil nuts, rubber, jute and rosewood oil. It has a cathedral, opera house, zoological and botanical gardens, an ecopark and regional and native peoples museums. With a population of 2 million people in 2014, Manaus is the most populous city in the Brazilian Amazon area and the 7th most populous in the country. Located on the north bank of the Negro River, 18 km above the meeting of the rivers where the Negro merges with the Solimões, Manaus is 1,400 km inland from the Atlantic Ocean. It is the hub of tourism for the rivers, the jungle lodges and the river cruises. The Solimões and Negro rivers meet in Manaus and join to form the Amazon River (using the Brazilian definition of the river; elsewhere, Solimões is considered the upper part of the Amazon). Rubber made it the richest city in South America during the late 1800s. Rubber also helped Manaus earn its nickname, the "Paris of the Tropics". Many wealthy European families settled in Manaus and brought their love for sophisticated European art, architecture and culture with them. Manaus is also a duty-free zone, which has encouraged development in the region. Manaus was one of the host cities of the 2014 FIFA World Cup. It was the only host city in the Amazon rainforest and the most geographically isolated, being further north and west than any of the other host cities.

Metropolitan Cathedral of Our Lady of the Conception

The Metropolitan Cathedral of Our Lady of the Conception , also called Catedral Metropolitana de Manaus, is a Roman Catholic cathedral located in the city of Manaus, state of Amazonas, northern Brazil. Is the mother church of the city, dating back to the Carmelite missionaries who, in 1695, created the early Church of Our Lady. This space was rebuilt by the President of the Province Manoel da Gama Lobo D'Almada, who did expand its facilities. The new work, however, was destroyed by a devastating fire in 1850. The current building is Greek style, with much of the material imported from Europe, especially Portugal; the six bells were made in a Portuguese foundry, and the chapel, baptistery and three altars all are made of limestone from Lisbon. The tiles came from Nova Rainha . In 1892 the Diocese of Amazonas was created; the church was officially opened in 1878. In 1946 the church was elevated to cathedral status.

Pico da Neblina National Park

Pico da Neblina National Park is a national park in the north of Brazil, bordering on Venezuela. The latter country also has an adjoining national park, called Neblina as well. The Brazilian national park was created in 1979, and it is one of the countrys largest national parks, with 22,200 km2 . The park was named after Pico da Neblina, one of its mountains and the countrys highest elevation at 2,994 m . It is covered by dense or open Amazon Rainforest, although other forms of vegetation, associated to high altitudes, can be also found in the area. The wildlife is very diverse, with some peculiar species, like the Neblina uakari and the Guianan cock-of-the-rock. Pico da Neblina National Park is located in one of the wettest areas of the Amazon, with an annual precipitation of 4,000 mm . The park is also part of the Yanomami territory and requires a special permit to be visited. There is no tourist infrastructure whatsoever and access is very difficult.

Ariau Towers

The Ariau Towers is a boutique hotel northwest of Manaus, Brazil, on the Rio Negro, a major tributary of the Amazon River. It consists of 7 towers, with all 288 rooms elevated from the rain forest floor by approximately 10-20m and connected by approximates 5 miles of catwalks. The hotel complex is one of the oldest and largest jungle lodges in the Amazon. It has become known for its luxury accommodations and celebrity guests. Describing it as "the ultimate treehouse", travel writer Patricia Schulz included the hotel as one of her "1,000 Places to See Before You Die". On the other hand, the editors of Frommer's South America severely criticized the hotel for its "mass-market" offerings and its lack of environmental sensitivity, calling it "all that is wrong with Amazon 'ecotourism'".

Amazon Tall Tower Observatory

The Amazon Tall Tower Observatory or ATTO is a scientific research tower in the Amazon rainforest with a height of 325 metres . The site is distant from any human presence, about 150 kilometres northeast of Manaus. The tower, South America's tallest structure, is used to study the climate in the largely untouched rainforest surrounding it. It measures greenhouse gases, aerosols and weather data and provides information about a roughly 100 square kilometer area around the tower. The project, a collaboration of the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry in Mainz, Germany, the Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazonia in Manaus, and the Universidade do Estado do Amazonas in Manaus, was started in 2009. Building of the tower began in 2014 and was completed in 2015. The cost of 8.4 million Euros was shared about equally by the German and Brazil partners.

Tabatinga

For the city in State of São Paulo, see Tabatinga, São Paulo. Tabatinga, originally Forte de São Francisco Xavier de Tabatinga, is a municipality in the Três Fronteiras area of Northwestern Brazil. It is located in the Brazilian state of Amazonas. Its population was 59,684 and its area is 3,225 km² Together with the neighbouring Colombian city of Leticia and the Peruvian city of Santa Rosa de Yavari, the urban area has more than 100,000 residents spread along the Amazon river. The first Portuguese settlement in the area was founded in the 18th century as a military outpost. It became an autonomous municipality on February 1, 1983. Formerly, it was part of the Municipality of Benjamin Constant. It is considered the major point of entrance for cocaine in Brazil. The city is the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Alto Solimões.

São Gabriel da Cachoeira

São Gabriel da Cachoeira (Saint Gabriel of the Waterfall) is a municipality located on the northern shore of the Rio Negro River, in the region of Cabeça do Cachorro, Amazonas state, Brazil. Between 1952 and 1966, it was officially called Uaupés, after the nearby Vaupés River. Most of its inhabitants are indigenous people. The city's population is somewhere around 13,000, but the entire region has 40,806 people (2008), scattered over 109,185 km2, mostly indigenous peoples in surrounding tribes and villages. In 2003, Nheengatu became an official language along with Portuguese in São Gabriel da Cachoeira. It is the third largest municipality in Brazil by territorial area, and the second largest in Amazonas. It is also the northernmost city of Amazonas, and part of its territory is within the Pico da Neblina National Park. However, the peak itself is located in Santa Isabel do Rio Negro, and São Gabriel da Cachoeira is in the lowlands. It is not far from the equator, and the climate is correspondingly hot and humid. The city is served by São Gabriel da Cachoeira Airport. Most of the non-indigenous residents of the city are affiliated with the Brazilian army, usually serving a term of two years or more.
