Top Attractions in Ramsau

Hochkalter

At 2,606.9 metres, the Hochkalter in the Berchtesgaden Alps is the highest peak in the massif of the same name and therefore one of the highest mountains in Germany. The massif is also called the Hochkaltergebirge, Hochkalterstock or Hochkaltermassiv. The Hochkalter massif lies west of the Watzmann massif and, like it, is located within the Berchtesgaden National Park. The Hochkalter mountains are divided into sub-groups known as the Hochkalter Group, Hocheis Group and Southern Wimbach Chain . The most important base for climbing this alpenstock is the German Alpine Clubs Blaueis Hut which lies at a height of 1,653 metres in the Blaueis Combe below the Blaueis, the most northern glacier in the Alps. Other mountain huts are the Bergheim Hirschbichl for the Hocheis Group, the Wimbachgrieshütte for climbs up the eastern flanks of the massif and the Ingolstädter Haus for the Southern Wimbach Chain.

Stadelhorn

The Stadelhorn is the highest and most prominent peak in the Reiter Alm on the Austro-German border, lying on the boundary between the states of Bavaria and Salzburg. The Stadelhorn is a popular, but rather exposed hiking summit. The view from the top extends from the Untersberg, the Hochkalter and Watzmann over the Leoganger Steinberge and Loferer Steinberge to the Sonntagshorn as well as large parts of the Lower Saalach valley. In addition, on clear days, the Stadelhorn offers a view from the Großer Priel in the east over the Dachstein and the High Tauern including the Großglockner and Großvenediger to Germanys highest peak, the Zugspitze, in the west. At the foot of the Stadelhorn on the Austrian side are the villages of St. Martin b. Lofer, Lofer and the parish of Unken; on the Bavarian side is the Klausbach valley and the Hintersee lake. The normal route to the top of the Stadelhorn runs along the western arête beginning at the Mayrberg gap . From here there are various options: Direct climbs: along the Loferer Steig from the Austrian side. along the Schaflsteig from the Bavarian side . Ascents via the Roßkar gap and the upper Wagendrischel cirque : from the Neue Traunsteiner Hut along the Roßgasse or the Steinberggasse. From the lake of Hintersee along the Böselsteig Unlike its eastern neighbour, the Großes Mühlsturzhorn, the Stadelhorn has fewer climbing options, although an ascent does require a head for heights and sure-footedness. Only a sports climbing tour up the southwest face is used more often.

Blaueis

The Blaueis is the northernmost glacier in the Alps and lies within the municipality of Ramsau in the Bavarian part of the Berchtesgaden Alps. The glacier lies on the exposed north-facing slopes in the upper Blaueis cirque, nestling between the rock faces of the Blaueisspitze, Hochkalter and Kleinkalter, which ring the glacier in a horseshoe shape. Because of its relatively low elevation, the Blaueis has been particularly affected by glacial retreat which is common amongst Alpine glaciers. Since the mid-1980s, rocks in the middle of the Blaueis have become increasingly free of snow and the upper part of the glacier is now more or less completely separated from the lower field of what is now dead ice. The thickness of the ice as determined by ground-penetrating radar was only up to 13 feet in 2007, and the average thickness of the ice was less than four metres; giving a volume of around 0.4 million m³. This means that the remaining ice mass is smaller than the mass lost in the last decade of the 20th century. The base for ascents of the glacier is the Blaueis Hut at 1,680 m high in the Blaueis cirque below the glacier. The hut may be reached from Ramsau or Hintersee in just over three hours walking. Above the glacier, which in its upper section is up to 55° steep, is a climbing path to the Blaueis gap, from which there is an easy climb of grade II to the Hochkalter summit. The best time of the year is usually the second half of June, when snow still facilitates the climb and snow bridges often allow a simple crossing of the gully below the saddle. In late summer and autumn, the gully is wide and often difficult to cross. At that time of the year there were sometimes fatal falls in the past caused by black ice. A popular climbing tour is the so-called Blaueisumrahmung . It runs without touching the glacier from the Blaueis Hut over the Schärtenspitze, Blaueisspitze, Hochkalter, Kleinkalter and Rotpalfen back to the start. The main difficulty is conquering the Blaueis north arête, which is at least a UIAA grade IV climb.

Watzmann Glacier

The Watzmann Glacier is one of the five recognised glaciers in Germany. It is located below the famous east face of the Watzmann in the Watzmann cirque and is surrounded by the Watzmanngrat arête, the Watzmannkindern and the Kleiner Watzmann. The size of the glacier reduced from around 30 hectares in 1820 until it split into a few fields of firn, but between 1965 and 1980 it advanced significantly again and now has an area of 10.1 hectares . Its classification as a glacier is not undisputed by scientists, however, due to its size and its low flow velocity. Above and to the west of the icefield lie the remains of a JU 52 transport aircraft than crashed in October 1940. Amongst the other permanent snow and icefields nearby are the Eiskapelle, which is well-known due to its easy accessibility from St. Bartholomä and may be the lowest lying permanent snowfield in the Alps, and the Schöllhorneis on the east face itself.
