Guwahati

Guwahati is the largest city of Assam and one of the fastest growing cities in India. The ancient cities of Pragjyotishpura and Durjaya were the capitals of the ancient state of Kamarupa under the Varman and Pala dynasties. Many ancient Hindu temples are in the city, giving it the name "City Of Temples". Dispur, the capital of Assam, is in the circuit city region located within Guwahati and is the seat of the Government of Assam. Guwahati lies between the banks of the Brahmaputra River and the foothills of the Shillong plateau, with LGB International Airport to the west and the town of Narengi to the east. It is gradually being expanded as North Guwahati to the northern bank of the Brahmaputra. The noted Madan Kamdev is situated 30 kilometres from Guwahati. The Guwahati Municipal Corporation , the city's local government, administers an area of 216 square kilometres , while the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority is the planning and development body of Guwahati Metropolitan Area. With an area of 1,528 square kilometres , Guwahati has the second largest metropolitan area in eastern India after Kolkata. The Guwahati region hosts diverse wildlife including rare animals such as Asian elephants, pythons, tigers, rhinoceros, gaurs, primate species, and endangered birds.

Dispur

Dispur is the capital of the state of Assam. Dispur, a locality of Guwahati, became the capital of Assam in 1973. This was after Shillong, the erstwhile capital, became the capital of the state of Meghalaya that was carved out of Assam. Dispur is the seat of Government of Assam. The Assam Secretariat building is located in Dispur along with the Assam Assembly House and the State Emergency Operations Centre. The Assam Trunk road and the G S road passes through Dispur. To the south of Dispur is the theologically important site of Basistha Ashram and the Shankardev Kalakshetra, a cultural center created in the 1990s. Next to Dispur is the ancient township of Jatia. Though it is well known as the capital of Assam, Dispur is also known for the Guwahati Tea Auction Centre. A large variety of tea is auctioned here. The centre has seen largest volume of CTC tea auction in the world.

Jorhat

Jorhat City (Assamese: যোৰহাট ) is a major urban centre of the state of Assam in India. Guwahati and Jorhat are underway to become two sunshine cities of Assam as declared by the central government. Jorhat was the first town of the Upper and central Assam installing electricity supply in 1923. The first aeroplane on north-eastern soil was landed in Jorhat in 1928. Jorhat Gymkhana Club is the oldest golf course in Asia and third oldest in the world. The first stadium of Assam was built in Jorhat. The world's oldest and largest Tea Experimental Station is located in Jorhat. The first non-government college of Assam J B College was established in Jorhat. The city has many research institutes, including the Tocklai Tea Research Institute, NEIST, Rain Forest Research Institute, Central Muga Eri Research Institute and universities like Assam Agricultural University, Assam Women's University & Kaziranga University. Today Jorhat is a rapidly developing city and one of the major business & commercial hubs of North-east India. The recent urban development of Jorhat has seen the rise of several high cost apartments and flats with people flocking in from all parts of the state, making it truly a cosmopolitan City. It was the last capital of the Ahom Kingdom and home to many historical monuments of Assamese culture. In the north of the district, the Brahmaputra River forms the second largest riverine island of the world, Majuli, which spreads over 924.6 square kilometres with a population of about 150,000. The island, threatened with constant erosion by the mighty and unstable Brahmaputra River, had been the principal place of pilgrimage of Vaishnavites since the age of the Ahom rulers. Several Sattras (monasteries) resembling those of medieval times are headed by Satradhikars teaching Vaishnavism, which was introduced by Srimanta Sankardeva (1449–1568). Each Sattra has an unknown wealth of Vaishnavite scriptures and extensive revenue-free lands cultivated by the Bhakats (celebated monks) of the Sattras. The cultural diversities which prevailed in Jorhat nearly a century ago has inspired the people to participate in cultural activities through the decades and as a result Jorhat has been able to produce many creative writers, musician, actors, historians and journalists, terming Jorhat "The Cultural Capital of Assam". The city today has evolved to be one of the major commercial and business hubs of the state with growing numbers of shopping malls, restaurants, hotels, residential apartments and educational institutions. The city also serves as the base for tourism to famous places such as the Kaziranga National Park and the World's largest river island Majuli. Centrally located within the state, the city depicts a vibrant Assamese township and culture, making it one of the most preferred places for local people to conglomerate.

Kolia Bhomora Setu

Kolia Bhomora Setu is a pre-stressed concrete road bridge over the Brahmaputra River near Tezpur in Assam . It is named after the Ahom General Kolia Bhomora Phukan. This bridge connects Sonitpur on the north bank with Nagaon District on the south bank. The length of this bridge is 3015 meters. The construction of the bridge took place from 1981 to 1987. The bridge helps the development of the North-East India. The Brahmaputra not only splits the state of Assam along its length but also cuts off the seven sister states of the North-East from the rest of the country. The river having a catchments area of 280,000 km2 flows in the most unpredictable manners, occupying 12 km to 16 km of space at places and poses a challenge to the bridge engineers. Despite the pioneering efforts of the Railways at Saraighat, the Northeast continued to suffer from the long-felt lack of transportation network. Around 25 years later, Indian Railways have turned yet another dream into reality. The 2nd Brahmaputra Bridge has greatly accelerate march of the North eastern states towards 21st century. Brahmaputra, one of the longer rivers in Asia with a total length of 2880 km – 920 km of which lie in India – had been bridged only at one place, the only link between the North Eastern states with the rest of the country. This 1.3 km rail-cum-road bridge, completed in 1962, was also constructed by Indian Railways. Road Bridge, Guwahati. The Assam PWD was entrusted with the job of making the road links on both side and unbelievably the whole task was completed even before the bridge was completed ahead of schedule. The main person behind was Late Lok Nath Barua, then Executive Engineer, who single handedly worked against odds. He was awarded a MEDAL of appreciation by Late Rajiv Gandhi on the inugration day of the bridge.

Dibru-Saikhowa National Park

Dibru-Saikhowa National Park is a national wildlife park in Tinsukia, Assam, India. Dibru Saikhowa national park is located at about 12 km north of Tinsukia town of Assam covering an area of 350 km2. It lies between 27°30 N to 27°45 N latitude and 95°10 E to 95°45E longitude at an average altitude of 118 m . It is also a biosphere reserve. The park bounded is by the Brahmaputra and Lohit rivers in the north and Dibru river in the south. It is situated in Dibrugarh and Tinsukia district of Assam. It mainly consists of moist mixed semi-evergreen forests, moist mixed deciduous forests, canebrakes and grasslands. It is the largest salix swamp forest in north east India. Situated in the flood plains of the Brahmaputra and the Lohit, at an altitude of 118 m above sea level, Dibru-Saikhowa is a safe haven for many endangered species. Due to the auto stocking by the Brahmaputra and Dibru river, it is rich in fish diversity. Dibru Saikhowa has tropical monsoon climate with a hot and wet summer and cool and usually dry winter. The annual rainfall ranges from 2300 mm to 3800 mm. The main rainy months are June, July, August, September. The average coldest and warmest temperature of the area ranges from 7°C to 34°C where June, July and August are the hottest while December and January are the coolest months.

Kaziranga National Park

Kaziranga National Park is a national park in the Golaghat and Nagaon districts of the state of Assam, India. A World Heritage Site, the park hosts two-thirds of the worlds great one-horned rhinoceroses. According to the latest census held in March, 2015, the current Rhino population in Kaziranga National Park is 2401 as published by the Forest Department under Govt. of Assam, an operation conducted by the department officials in association with some recognized wildlife NGOs. The 2015 census revealed rhino population as 1,651 adults, 294 sub-adults, 251 juveniles and 205 cubs. Kaziranga boasts the highest density of tigers among protected areas in the world and was declared a Tiger Reserve in 2006. The park is home to large breeding populations of elephants, wild water buffalo, and swamp deer. Kaziranga is recognized as an Important Bird Area by Birdlife International for conservation of avifaunal species. Compared to other protected areas in India, Kaziranga has achieved notable success in wildlife conservation. Located on the edge of the Eastern Himalaya biodiversity hotspot, the park combines high species diversity and visibility. Kaziranga is a vast expanse of tall elephant grass, marshland, and dense tropical moist broadleaf forests, crisscrossed by four major rivers, including the Brahmaputra, and the park includes numerous small bodies of water. Kaziranga has been the theme of several books, songs, and documentaries. The park celebrated its centennial in 2005 after its establishment in 1905 as a reserve forest.

Ramkrishna Nagar

Ramkrishna Nagar is a small township situated around 47 km from Karimganj, India. The topography of the area comprises undulating hillocks. It is well connected by bus service from Karimganj and shared taxis run by private operators. This town is under jurisdiction of Karimganj and having a sub divisional office. the population here is very less and the only institution for higher education is Ramkrishna Nagar college which started its journey since 1964.Now it render various courses both in science and humanities to the people of this locality.The college is having subsidized hostel facility for girls and bus facility for the students of this college. There is a small town under this called Kadamtala about 2 km from Ramkrishna Nagr. Access to this place is from Hilakandi, Silchar, and other places by bus route is available. This place is a more of country side of Assam where you can have all the experience of Village. The Major part of the population over here is Bengali almost(95%). Most of the people live here are middle aged or senior citizens as the younger generations migrate to other places for study and job. Agriculture is the main occupation of the people here and Rice is the main crop. There is a small park, which is located on top of a hillock. This place offers natural view surrounding Ramkrishna Nagar. View of sun rise & sun set is very beautiful. There is a Kali Mandir(at R.K.Nagar), Laxmi Narayan Mandir , Hindu Milan Mandir of Bharat Sevasram Sangha,& SHIB BARI(SUBHASH PALLY) & which are very ancient.All Ramkrishnanagarian assembled at the time of Durga Puja and 56 Prahar Kirtan . The event 56 Prahar starts on 16 January(2nd Magh) and run up to 23 January(8th Magh) in every year. Ramkrishna Vidyapith, Ramkrishna Nagar, a higher secondary school established in 1947 is one of the pioneer institutions for secondary education, not only in Barak Valley but also in Assam. Around 1500 students are getting their school education from this school. There are a few schools including one exclusively for girls.There ia also a college named R.K.Nagar College which has both Science and Arts streams. Sonbill is the biggest fish bowl in Asia which is just 10 km. from Ramkrishna Nagar.There are three banks viz. UBI, Apex Bank and SBI. Only SBI & UBI has ATM facility. Ramkrishna Nagar has a primary health centre (Under Govt of Assam,India)situated in hill,popularly known as Hospital Tilla for the local people. Ramkrishna Nagar is culturally very rich and it has good cultural background. People of Ramkrishna Nagar like Music,playing various instruments and has a strong folk culture also. You have arden followers of folk music in Ramkrishna Nagar. There are various cultuaral club/Sports club in Ramkrishna Nagar. Some of the popular clubs are Narendra Sangha,YMAC, Royal Bengal Club, Viking Club, Asiad Club, Pragati Sangha. These clubs often arranges socio cultural activity and sports event. Ramkrishna Vidyapith, H.S School, Kadamtala High School are main education centres.

Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra

Srimanta Sankaradev Kalakshetra commonly Kalakshetra is a cultural institution in the Panjabari area of Guwahati, Assam, named after the medieval poet-playwright and reformer Srimanta Sankardev. It includes a cultural museum, library and various facilities for preserving, demonstrating and performing cultural items, besides a children's park. In addition to being Northeast India's largest cultural congregation, the Kalakshetra is also a major tourist spot in Guwahati. Built in the 1990s, the artistic excellence of Assam and rest of the north-eastern region is displayed here. There are eateries, places of worship, emporiums and open-air theatres within the sprawling Kalakshetra premises. It is governed by a body of executives, selected by the Assam Government's Cultural Department and is headed by a Director of the Assam Civil Service or Indian Administrative Service cadre. The Kalakshetra is divided into several complexes. The Central Museum exhibits the articles used by different ethnic groups of Assam. The museum also houses several cultural objects of the state within it. The open-air theater can accommodate 2000 people and hosts cultural programs in its premises. Traditional dance and drama performances are conducted in this theater. The Kalakshetra also has the Artists' Village, which replicates the village society of Assam. The Sahitya Bhavan is the library in the Kalakshetra, which has a huge collection of rare books and manuscripts. It is a repository of the literature of the region. Another section of the art complex is the Lalit-Kala Bhavan. It is the center used for exhibitions and workshops on art and culture. A heritage park is also a part of the huge complex of the Shankardev Kalakshetra. Now a cable car facility is also available inside the park to commute the tourists. Nice view of the hills of Shillong plateau can be seen from the fields of Kalakshetra. The museum provides you a summary of Assamese Culture. The Bhupen Hazarika museum is the another attraction of Kalakshetra. The Kalakshetra houses number of structures and buildings abiding with the ethnic Assamese designs. A replica of the Rang Ghar (an Ahom Amphitheatre in Sivasagar district of Assam), is positioned in the entrance corridor to the main Central Museum. The Central Museum preserves some of the traditional articles, or artifacts of Assamese culture. The open-air theatre, with a breathtaking view of misty mountainous range of the Khasi Hills in eyes vicinity, is a regular venue for a wide variety of cultural events and 2000 audience can enjoy the shows from the gallery seats. What can be termed as the major attraction in the Kalakshetra is an Artistic Village. This village portrays the village life of Assam in the most liveliest of form through life like statues and model thatched huts. The majority of urban children, who are now deprived of experiencing a village life due to massive urbanization, can increase their knowledge of their roots through a virtual tour of the village. The Sahitya Bhawan is an archive of Assamese texts and literatures and provides a good reference for any scholar gathering information on Assam or the related North Eastern states. The Lalit Kala Bhawan offers a world class exhibition space for arts and sculptures.A walk through the Heritage Park gives a feeling of contentment and satisfaction to any nature's child. The Kalakshetra quite often holds various workshops of dramaturgy, cinema and other performing as well as visual arts. Beside these a candid eye for beauty can always spot the various murals on the center's surrounding walls. These murals depict various war moments, Bihu dances and other Assamese iconic representations.

Mahabhairav Temple

The ancient Mahabhairav Temple is located at a hillock on the northern part of Tezpur town, Assam. This temple is believed to have been established by king Bana in the pre-historical times. This Shiva temple was originally built of stone but the present one was renovated and built with concrete. During the Ahom rule, the kings especially of the Tungkhungiya dynasty donated large area of Devottar land to the Temple and pujaris and Paiks were appointed to look after the temple. The responsibility of management was in the hands of a Borthakur. The temple is now managed by the Government through a managing committee headed by the District Deputy Commissioner. Shivaratri is celebrated in the temple with big festivity and people from all over the country visit it. The Shivratri mela during the Shivratri week is very famous all over Assam. Bhang laddoos, sold as prasad are in very much demand. The mela is smaller than that in Sivsagar, but is nevertheless famous.This temple also conducts marriage ceremonies. People usually free pigeons in this temple as an offering, it is a wonderful sight to see hundreds of pigeons in this place.

Kamakhya Temple

The Kamakhya Temple; also Kamrup-Kamakhya is a Hindu temple dedicated to the mother goddess Kamakhya. It is one of the oldest of the 51 Shakti Pithas. Situated on the Nilachal Hill in western part of Guwahati city in Assam, India, it is the main temple in a complex of individual temples dedicated to the ten Mahavidyas: Kali, Tara, Sodashi, Bhuvaneshwari, Bhairavi, Chhinnamasta, Dhumavati, Bagalamukhi, Matangi and Kamala. Among these, Tripurasundari, Matangi and Kamala reside inside the main temple whereas the other seven reside in individual temples. It is an important pilgrimage destination for general Hindu and especially for Tantric worshipers. In July 2015, the Supreme Court of India transferred the administration of the Temple from the Kamakhya Debutter Board to the Bordewri Samaj.

Ugro Tara Temple

Ugro Tara Temple is a temple dedicated to Tara located in the western side of Jor Pukhury tanks in the heart of Guwahati city in the Lotaxil locality in Northeast India. The Ugratara Temple in Uzan Bazaar in the eastern part of Guwahati, Assam is an important Sakti shrine. Legend has it that the navel of Sati, first consort of Shiva, is related to this temple. Ugratara in Assam is generally identified with Tiksna-Kanta, Eka-Jata, etc., of the Buddhist pantheon. The present temple of Ugra Tara was built by Ahom King Siva Singha in 1725 AD who had excavated a tank three years before. The tank, known as Jorepukhuri, is situated to the east of the temple. The tank still exists, though the upper section of the temple was destroyed by a devastating earthquake. This was however rebuilt by a private citizen. Kalika purana describes a Shakti peetha called Dikkara vasini. Dikkara vasini has two forms, Tikshna kantha and Lalitha kantha. Tikshna kantha is black and pot bellied, also called as Ugra Tara or Eka jata. Lalitha kantha is gracefully attractive, also called as Tamreshwari. In the garbhagriha of Ugra Tara there is no image or idol of her. A small pit filled with water is considered as the Goddess. The temple of Ugra Tara is small and beautiful to view. There is a Shivalaya beside Ugra Tara temple and a pond behind both temples.

Hoollongapar Gibbon Sanctuary

The Hoollongapar Gibbon Sanctuary, formerly known as the Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary or Hollongapar Reserve Forest, is an isolated protected area of evergreen forest located in Assam, India. The sanctuary was officially constituted and renamed in 1997. Set aside initially in 1881, its forests used to extend to the foothills of the Patkai mountain range. Since then, the forest has been fragmented and surrounded by tea gardens and small villages. In the early 1900s, artificial regeneration was used to a develop well-stocked forest, resulting in the sites rich biodiversity. The Hoollongapar Gibbon Sanctuary contains Indias only gibbons – the hoolock gibbons, and Northeastern Indias only nocturnal primate – the Bengal slow loris. The upper canopy of the forest is dominated by the Hollong tree, while the Nahar dominates the middle canopy. The lower canopy consists of evergreen shrubs and herbs. The habitat is threatened by illegal logging, encroachment of human settlements, and habitat fragmentation.

Assam Agricultural University

Assam Agricultural University is an agricultural university which was established in 1969 under the Assam Agricultural University Act 1968 January 2, 1969. The jurisdiction of the University extends to the entire State of Assam with regard to teaching, research and extension education in the field of agriculture and allied sciences. The University has a number of campuses with its headquarters at Borbheta, about 5 km from both bus station and railway station and 2 km from airport of the City of Jorhat. The city can be reached easily from Guwahati, the capital of Assam, by AirRail. The latitude, longitude and altitude of Jorhat are 26°44´N, 94°l0´E and 9l m. above mean sea level respectively. The objectives of the University are: To make provision for imparting education to the people in agriculture and other allied branches of learning To further the advancement of learning and research in agriculture and other allied sciences To undertake the extension of such sciences especially to the rural people of the state.
