Top Attractions in Paraiba State

João Pessoa

João Pessoa is the capital of the state of Paraíba in Brazil. It was founded in 1585 and sometimes is called the city where the sun rises first, as it is the easternmost city in the Americas at 34° 47′ 38″ W, 7° 9′ 28″ S. Its easternmost point is known as Ponta do Seixas. The city is considered "the second greenest in the world", with more than 7 square kilometres of forested land, second only to Paris, France. It gained this distinction in 1992 after a survey of urban centres in various countries carried out by the United Nations . The city is characterized by the juxtaposition of tropical beaches, modern architecture, and historic buildings from colonial periods. João Pessoa is the capital of Paraíba, a state in the northeast region of Brazil and home to 19th and 20th century Brazilian poets and writers such as Augusto dos Anjos, José Américo de Almeida, José Lins do Rego, and Pedro Américo. It took its current name in 1930 in homage to state president João Pessoa Cavalcanti de Albuquerque, who was assassinated on 26 July of that year. It is the state's largest city, with a population of circa 770,000 (about one sixth of the state's population). Its metropolitan area comprises eight other satellite cities (Bayeux, Cabedelo, Conde, Lucena, Santa Rita, and others), totalling 1,223,000 of inhabitants. It is the capital with the shortest distance from another capital (Recife), which is approximately 120 kilometres away, as well as Natal, 180 kilometres north of João Pessoa. Due to the high growth rate of these three capital cities, it is believed that for the next few decades an informal megalopolis will be set up, especially between Recife and João Pessoa. The city is one of the oldest in the northeast of the country. Theatres, auditoriums, and convention centres are part of the available infrastructure in the city. The new Presidente Castro Pinto International Airport connects João Pessoa with many Brazilian cities. The new "Estação Ciência, Cultura e Artes" (Science, Culture and Art Station), located at the most eastern point of the Americas (Ponta das Seixas), is both an educational and cultural institution as well as a national landmark. The complex, inaugurated in 2008, was created by Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer and is one of his last projects.

Tambaba

Tambaba is an official nudist beach in Brazil, located on the Atlantic coast 20 km south of João Pessoa and 115 km north of Recife, at 7°21′57″S 34°47′50″W. In Tambaba, one must be nude in the family area . Around the periphery of the beach, nudism is optional. Tambaba is a short beach, about 1 km . Until recently, the final access road was unpaved. However, as part of the infrastructure, development of the region the Ministro Abelardo Jurema highway has been completed and the route is paved from João Pessoa to Tambaba. Tambaba sits in the municipality of Pitambui in the state of Paraiba and is considered one of the best beaches in Brazil. While famous for its nudist beach, it also has a public beach without nudism. The area benefits from proximity of the recently expanded BR-101 route from Recife to Joao Pessoa to Natal, as well as to the other beaches of Tabatinga, Praia Bella and Coquerinho. This route is considered of high importance to the economy of Paiariba which is expanding due to the increase in tourism to the areas in and around Tambaba and the wider region including Joao Pessoa. Tambaba Country Club Resort, a 150 hectare country club, is closely linked to the beach of Tambaba.

Ingá Stone

The Ingá Stone is located in the middle of the Ingá River near the small city of Ingá, 96 km from João Pessoa, in Paraíba State in the northeast of Brazil. The Ingá Stone is also called Itacoatiara do Ingá. The word Itacoatiara means stone in the Tupi language of the natives that lived in that area. It is a rock formation in gneiss which covers an area of approximately 250 m². Altogether primary, a vertical wall 46 meters long by 3.8 meters high, and adjacent areas, there are entries whose meanings are unknown. In this set are carved in low relief, several figures, suggest that the representation of animals, fruits, and human constellations like Orion and Milky Way. It is composed of some basalt stones covered with symbols and glyphs undeciphered until now. Scholars think it was created by natives that lived in the area until the 18th century. Most glyphs represent animals, fruits, humans, constellations, and other unrecognizable images.

Cabo Branco Lighthouse

The Cabo Branco Lighthouse is located on the cliffs of Cabo Branco, district of the same name, João Pessoa, Paraíba, Brazil. Situated-approximately 800 metres to the north of Ponta do Seixas, easternmost point of the entire Americas. It is one of the most important and visited places in João Pessoa. Concrete triangular tower, with three projections pointed in wing shape 3.5 metres above the floor. Headlamp painted white with a horizontal black strip immediately above the wings. The Peter Abraham Diebs monument project, retired teacher of the Department of Architecture and Urbanism Federal University of Paraíba, who died November 26, 2007, João Pessoa. It was inaugurated in April 1972, the government of Emilio Medici, full military dictatorship. The beacon of "Cape White" has a triangular shape wings, the only one in the world. The architects had the intention to represent a sisal plant, to design the lighthouse. Sisal was one of most lasting economic cycles and profit in the state of Paraiba.
