National Infantry Museum

The National Infantry Museum and Soldier Center is a museum located in Columbus, Georgia, just outside Fort Benning, the home of the infantry. The 190,000-square-foot museum opened in June 2009. The facility tells the story of the United States Army infantryman, from the American Revolution to Afghanistan. The museum houses artifacts from all eras of American history and contains interactive multimedia exhibits. The National Infantry Museum emphasizes the values that are meant to define the infantryman, as well as the nation: loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity, and personal courage. In addition to galleries, the National Infantry Museum and Soldier Center also consists of: • The Patriot Park IMAX Theatre • NIM Sim Combat Simulators • The EST2000 Rifle Range • The Fife and Drum Restaurant • The Soldier Store Gift Shop • Heritage Walk • Memorial Walk of Honor Until April 2008, the museum was housed in an old army hospital on Fort Benning. Space and conditions for the museum’s collection was inadequate. There was a failed attempt to raise money for a new museum in the 1970s. In 1998, the 501(c)(3) National Infantry Foundation was formed to plan, raise funds and to operate a new museum. The National Infantry Foundation has since formed a formal partnership with the army to manage the facility and its contents. The National Infantry Museum does not receive federal, state or city funding. Through its lease agreement with the National Infantry Foundation, the army reimburses the foundation for approximately 30 percent of the museum’s annual operating expenses. The museum relies on donations, memberships and revenue-generating attractions such as the IMAX theatre, combat simulators, Fife and Drum Restaurant, Soldier Store and catering to cover operating expenses. In April 2012 – three years since opening – the museum welcomed its 1,000,000th visitor. It has received coverage in national and foreign media and it received the Thea Award from the Themed Entertainment Association in 2011. In October 2013, first Lt. Ashley White and Capt. Jenny Moreno, who had been part of a pioneering all-women team recruited for special operations combat missions and had died on night raids in southern Afghanistan, became the first two women to be honored at the National Infantry Museum's Memorial Walk.

Rankin House

Rankin House is a historic residence in Columbus, Georgia. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on March 16, 1972. It is located at 1440 2nd Avenue. It is now home to a museum on the first floor and the Historic Columbus Foundation on the upper floor. The home was built for James Rankin, a planter and owner of The Rankin Hotel who came to Columbus from Ayrshire, Scotland. Construction of the home was interrupted by the American Civil War. The home includes iron grillwork, pine floors, marble mantels and a walnut double stairway. Period gaslight chandeliers are a highlight of the museum rooms. The music room boasts a rosewood piano of concert quality; a picture of Mr. Rankin, the home’s original owner; and a Rankin family petticoat table and ornate gilt mirror. A piano forte is displayed in the south parlor. The home includes a utility staircase used by servants. It was an expensive home. The property's fencing is from the Broadway townhouse of General Henry Lewis Benning, the Confederate war hero for whom Fort Benning is named.

NerdaCon

NerdaCon is a multi-genre fan convention held annually since 2007 at Columbus State University by the school's Campus Nerds group, a campus organization that describes itself as "an organization that embraces all special interests and gives its members a community of like minded invidiviuals". Each year, the con is titled "NerdaCon vX", where "X" is the number of the con (The first was "v1", the second was "v2", etc.). As it is a multi-genre convention, it has no general focus other than that of the Nerds, in that the panels, guests, and dealers each add a focus toward anime, manga, science fiction, gaming, comic books, zombie apocalypse, or a combination of these or other generally nerdy or geeky things to add to the atmosphere. Also unlike other conventions, admission to NerdaCon is free, and, as it is hosted on an open campus, parking for the convention is, as well. Instead, the convention makes its money through donations, in-con sales, et cetera. However, the Campus Nerds do not keep all the money; much of it is donated to such organizations as Children's Miracle Network and the Hero Initiative. By tradition, the convention is held on a Friday and Saturday in November, from 6:00 PM to 11:00 PM on the Friday, and 10:00 AM to 11:00 PM on Saturday. However, since NerdaCon v6 was held on November 11, 2011 (1111), each day was extended by 11 minutes, making it end at 11:11 PM.

Golden Park

Golden Park is a 5,000-seat baseball stadium in Columbus, Georgia, United States, that opened in 1926. Located on the Chattahoochee River in Downtown Columbus, it currently is not home to any professional baseball team. The exterior of the Golden Park is a red brick façade and has many well-landscaped sidewalks that connect to the Chattahoochee RiverWalk. Doug Redmond led the park to the most successful park attendance record in 1992. Golden Park is named after Theodore Earnest Golden SR, co-founder of Goldens Foundry and Machine Co.. Golden led the effort in Columbus for the citys first South Atlantic League team. Golden Park was renovated in 1994 in anticipation of the softball events of the 1996 Summer Olympics that were held in the city of Columbus.In 2013, Golden Park was the home of the Beep Baseball World Series Championship game. The Taiwan Homerun Team beat the Austin Blackhawks by a score of 5-2.

Lake Oliver

Lake Oliver is a 2,150-acre reservoir on the Chattahoochee River, which lies south of Goat Rock Dam . The lake is created by the Oliver Dam and Generating Plant, which was completed in 1959 by Georgia Power. The lake was named for James McCoy Oliver, an executive of Georgia Power at the time. Oliver Dam has four turbine units, and the dam itself is 70 feet tall and 2,150 feet long. At the southern end of the reservoir, Lake Oliver is relatively wide but quickly narrows and becomes almost riverine at the northern end of the lake, at the foot of the Goat Rock Dam upstream. Public access to the lake is limited to one marina owned by the City of Columbus. Since Lake Oliver is entirely within the city limits of Columbus, Georgia, the shore is densely settled on both the Georgia and Alabama sides. Green Island Hills, an upscale development, is located on the lake at the mouth of Standing Boy Creek. Given the amount of settlement, there are many private access points to the lake. In the summer, the lake is very crowded with recreational activity. The other three seasons usually see anglers fishing for bream. Lake Oliver also serves as the municipal water supply for Columbus. The location of Oliver Dam is approximately at the Fall Line of the Chattahoochee River. Between Oliver Dam and the downtown Columbus, a few miles downstream, the river drops nearly 100 feet in elevation. Lake Oliver is the northernmost point of the Chattahoochee Riverwalk a fifteen mile long bicycle pathway that extends southward to Fort Benning.
