Portage Island

Portage Island is an island in the western part of Bellingham Bay in Whatcom County, Washington, United States. It is separated from the Lummi Peninsula by Portage Bay and from the central part of Lummi Island by Hale Passage, in Whatcom County. Portage Island has a land area of 3.803 km² . There was no resident population as of the 2000 census. According to the Whatcom County Assessors database, the land and the surrounding tide flats are owned by the Lummi Native American tribe.

Whatcom Museum

The Whatcom Museum was originally built in 1892 as the city hall for the former town of New Whatcom, before it was joined with surrounding towns to form Bellingham, Washington. The building was designed in a Late Victorian style by Alfred Lee, a local architect, who used red brick and Chuckanut Sandstone for its construction. The design itself was an almost exact replica of the second Saginaw County Courthouse in Saginaw, Michigan, Designed by Fred W. Hollister. At the time of construction, the building was situated on a bluff above Bellingham Bay. However, over the years, significant amounts of the waterfront were filled in to make more land. Currently, the building sits above Maritime Heritage Park. The building served as city hall until 1936, and became part of the museum in 1941. In 1962, the fire damaged the building, but efforts from the community raised money to restore the building. In 2009, The Whatcom Museum opened a location in the newly designed Lightcatcher building. The Lightcatcher, designed by Seattle-based Olson Kundig Architects, is named for its 37 feet high and 180 feet long translucent wall, which facilitates a number of energy saving strategies. Currently, the Whatcom Museum is a three building campus that includes Old City Hall, Syre Education Center and Lightcatcher which encloses the Family Interactive Gallery .

Lake Whatcom

Lake Whatcom is located in Whatcom County, Washington. It is the drinking water source for approximately 85,000 residents in the City of Bellingham as well as Whatcom County. It is approximately 10 miles total in length and 1 mile in width at its widest. Lake Whatcom is located and managed within three political jurisdictions: the City Of Bellingham, Whatcom County, and Lake Whatcom Water and Sewer District. The lake is a popular area for motor boating, swimming, fishing, and other recreational activities. The lake is divided into three basins. Basin 1, the Silver Beach Basin, is the furthest north, and has a maximum depth of 100 feet . Land use in Basin 1 is primarily residential development, with one large park and several small parks. Basin 2, the Geneva Basin, is the central basin where the drinking water for the city of Bellingham is withdrawn. This basin is the shallowest, with a maximum depth of just 40–60 feet . Land use is primarily residential with a mix of lake protection program properties and some rural forestry. Basin 3 is the southernmost basin, and is the most remote. At its greatest depth basin 3 is 328 feet deep, and is estimated to contain 96% of the lakes total water volume. Land use in Basin 3 is composed of scattered residential development, mostly in the community of Sudden Valley, as well as rural and commercial forestry. The total area of the Lake Whatcom Watershed is 142 square kilometers . There are nine annual streams and approximately 25 additional small creeks and tributaries that flow into Lake Whatcom. Accounting for 23 sub-watersheds in all. Lake Whatcom drains into Bellingham Bay by way of Whatcom Creek. The lake has only one island, the 3-acre Reveille Island, owned by Camp Firwood, which is believed to be the site of past ceremonies by Native Americans, due to the presence of pictographs and a zoomorphic stone bowl found on the island.

Sehome Hill Arboretum

Sehome, also called Sehome Hill, is a forested hill in Bellingham, Washington. The Sehome Hill Arboretum is an 180-acre park of second growth forest is located on the hill, adjacent to the campus of Western Washington University. Though called an arboretum, the hilly expanse atop Sehome is not consciously planted as an exhibit of tree species, but naturally wooded and rich in the plant species typical of the region. The arboretum is jointly managed by both the university and the city. Its care is overseen by the Sehome Arboretum Board of Governors, composed of city employees, university employees, university students, and city residents. The park offers students and city dwellers over 5 miles of public trails for walking and running and, in some areas, bicycling. Unique features of the park include an 80-foot wooden observation tower atop Sehome, with aerial views of Bellingham Bay to the south. There is also a large tunnel, hand cut into rock in 1923, originally used for car traffic in the early 1900s. Its tall, thin shape shows its creation for cars like Model T Fords of the day. Cars are no longer allowed in the tunnel and it is part of a trail along which hikers can walk.

Whatcom Falls Park

Whatcom Falls Park is a 241-acre park in Bellingham, Washington, USA. The falls are on Whatcom Creek, which leads from Lake Whatcom to Bellingham Bay. The park has four sets of waterfalls and several miles of well maintained walking trails. Other features include: Fishing pond — Children 14 and under only. Tennis courts Athletic fields Picnic Tables — Picnic shelters can be rented from the parks department office. Two playgrounds — one at each the upper and lower parking lots. Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife operates a trout hatchery within the park.

Western Washington University

Western Washington University is one of six public universities in the U.S. state of Washington. It is located in Bellingham. WWU was founded as the state-funded New Whatcom Normal School in 1893, succeeding a private school of teaching for women. WWU offers a variety of bachelors and masters degrees. In 2014, there were 15,060 students, 14,407 of whom were undergraduate students, and 764 faculty. Its athletic teams are known as the Vikings and the school colors are Western blue, bay blue, and white.

Bellingham International Airport

Bellingham International Airport is three miles northwest of Bellingham, in Whatcom County, Washington, and the third-largest commercial airport in Washington. Due to the airport's close proximity to British Columbia, Canada, it is a low fare alternative airport to the Vancouver International Airport. On the Allegiant website the airport is referred to as Bellingham/Vancouver. The newly constructed gate area has five gates, a coffee shop and a restaurant with a bar. The second phase of the terminal expansion will add a baggage carousel in addition to larger ticketing and pre-security areas for passengers, scheduled to be completed in phases beginning in 2012 and with completion expected by 2015.

Leopold Hotel

The Leopold in Bellingham, Washington was built in 1889 and originally named the Byron Hotel after its owner Captain H.C. Byron. Byron owned the hotel until 1910 when Leopold F. Schmidt purchased the Byron for $100,000. One famous fact about the hotel was the home of famous Alaskan artist Sydney Laurence; however given his economic situation, he was unable to pay his bill in cash so instead traded Schmidt paintings for his room. To this day, the Schmidt family has one of the largest private collections of his work. The hotel also holds the distinction of being the place of Leopold's death on September 24, 1914. The hotels name was soon changed to The Hotel Leopold as a token of appreciation by the hotels investors. When Schmidt originally purchased the hotel, it only held 93 rooms. In the 1980s, The Leopold became a retirement living community and underwent a significant renovation. The Leopold is currently home to approximately 100 retirement-age residents. The Leopold was added to the National Register of Historic Places on February 19, 1982

United States Post Office and Courthouse

The U.S. Post Office and Courthouse in Bellingham, Washington, also known as the Federal Building, was built in 1912. It was designed by James Knox Taylor in Renaissance architecture style. It served historically as a courthouse, as a post office, and as a government office building. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

Gamwell House

The Gamwell House was designed by architects Longstaff & Black and was built in 1890. It is one of the most distinguished Late Victorian era homes in the area. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. The architectural firm of Longstaff and Black was "an eastern firm who had come from the Boston area to the Bellingham Bay real estate boom"; they also are credited with designing the Cascade County Courthouse in Montana.

Bellingham Railway Museum

The Bellingham Railway Museum in Bellingham, Washington, USA, displays a pictorial and text history of railroad traffic in Bellingham and Whatcom/Skagit Counties, as well as a large electric model railroad, an exhibit of railroad lanterns, and a train simulator based on Microsoft Train Simulator software.

Goshen

Goshen was a pioneer town in western Whatcom County (approximately 5 miles northeast of Bellingham, and 10 miles south of the US border with Canada). It was a stop on the rail line of the Bellingham Bay and British Columbia Railroad. It no longer exists, yet the Everson-Goshen road is still present. At one point Goshen hoped to compete with Whatcom (now Bellingham) and Seattle for the western depot of the railroad line which was being laid north to Washington State, which would guarantee economic investment and much traffic. Tacoma won the contest. Goshen was a logging and farming community.

Lake Padden

Lake Padden is a lake located in Bellingham, Washington, United States. The park is popular during the spring and summer, and features numerous picnic areas as well as playgrounds. There are also numerous trails located around the lake and throughout the surrounding forest that are used for hiking and biking. A public golf course is located along the eastern shore. A significant piece of geography besides the lake itself is a 1000-foot ridge that separates the lake from I-5 to the south.

Galbraith Mountain

Galbraith Mountain is the common name for North Lookout Mountain, located between the communities of Sudden Valley and Bellingham, Washington. A 3,125-acre area was owned by the Trillium Corporation until April 1, 2010, when the company surrendered the property to Polygon Financial Partners instead of defaulting on the loan held by Polygon. Galbraith Mountain has two main summits, which are 1,365 ft and 1,785 ft high. Though they are not either the highest points on Lookout mountain, they are prominent from all over Western Whatcom County. The Whatcom Independent Mountain Pedalers created and maintained a large trail system under a 2005 contract with Trillium. The mountain has many access points; the two most popular are from Birch Street, off of Lakeway Drive, and Galbraith Lane, off of Samish Way. Galbraith Mountain is home to four radio towers, three of which are on the summit, and one about 100 ft below. There is active logging on the flanks of the mountain, which has opened clear sight lines from the trails which criss-cross the area. Numerous kiosks and outdoor art were placed throughout the mountain by Trillium and the WMBC, including a bike maintenance station. As of April 26, 2010, Polygon's planned relationship with the mountain biking community and land use policy has not been established.

Rain Forest

Rain Forest is a bronze fountain/sculpture by James FitzGerald located on the campus of Western Washington University. Commissioned in 1959 and unveiled in 1960, it was the first work in the Western Washington University Public Sculpture Collection. The sculpture represents the temperate rainforests of the nearby Olympic Peninsula.

Fairhaven

Fairhaven, Washington was founded in the late 1880s and is now part of the City of Bellingham, Washington, USA. It is on the south side of Bellingham, and borders Bellingham Bay on the west and Western Washington University on the northeast. Its center is the Fairhaven Historical District, which features a seasonal farmers market as well as numerous restaurants and shops. The district is a popular tourist destination. All newly constructed buildings are required to conform in outward appearance to the communitys traditional 19th-century style as defined by Bellingham Municipal Code, Design Review District, section 20.26. Fairhaven is the southernmost terminus of the Alaska Marine Highway System, Alaskas state run ferry system. The terminal is also the departure point for summer passenger ferry service to the San Juan Islands and Victoria, British Columbia operated by Victoria/San Juan Cruises. Nearby is Fairhaven Station, a small transportation hub which serves as Bellinghams Amtrak Cascades station stop as well as the Greyhound bus depot. Connections can be made to local taxis or local transit. Whatcom Transportation Authority recently upgraded Fairhavens bus service to every 15 minutes as part of its Red Line. Fairhaven also plays outdoor movies every weekend during the summer.

Huxley College of the Environment at Western Washington University is one of the oldest environmental colleges in the USA. The college is named after Thomas Henry Huxley, an English biologist who worked to advance the place of science in British life.

Joe Martin Field

Joe Martin Field is a baseball stadium in Bellingham, Washington, a former minor league ballpark in the short-season Class A Northwest League from 1973 through 1996. The ballpark hosted three different NWL teams. The Bellingham Dodgers arrived in 1973 and stayed for four seasons. They were replaced in 1977 by the most well-known tenant, the Bellingham Mariners , who played from 1977 through 1994 and gave big-league Mariners fans a glimpse of the future with players like Ken Griffey Jr., Edgar Martinez, Dave Henderson, and Dave Valle. After 18 seasons and four league championships, the Mariners moved their NWL ballclub closer to Seattle at Everett. The San Francisco Giants brought their affiliate to town where they played for two years , then moved south to Oregon and became the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes in 1997. In 1999, it became the home of the Bellingham Bells of the Pacific International League . The Bells played in the PIL for six years. In 2005, the team chose to become one of the founding franchises of the West Coast Collegiate Baseball League. Today, the league was later renamed the West Coast League and features some of the finest collegiate players in the country. Each summer the Bells play around 30 home games at Joe Martin Field as part of their WCL schedule which features teams from Washington, Oregon, and British Columbia. In 2014, the natural grass playing surface was replaced with synthetic turf; the renovation cost about $1,438,200 and was completed in March 2015. The field has an unorthodox southwest alignment (home plate to center field); the recommended alignment is east-northeast, nearly opposite.

Bellingham Mariners

The Bellingham Mariners were a minor league baseball team in the short-season Class A Northwest League, based in Bellingham, Washington. The franchise arrived in 1973 as the Bellingham Dodgers, affiliated with the Los Angeles Dodgers for four seasons. They changed to the expansion Seattle Mariners in 1977 (Bellingham Mariners, or the "Baby M's" as they were popularly known), which lasted for 18 seasons, through 1994. The final two seasons in 1995 and 1996 were as the Bellingham Giants, the affiliate of the San Francisco Giants. After three seasons in Medford and one season in Spokane in 1972, the Dodgers moved their NWL affiliate to Bellingham for 1973. The 1975 team gained unwanted national notoriety when it went winless for the first 25 games. They ended the season at 17-61. In 1987, 17-year-old Ken Griffey, Jr. hit his first professional home run while on the road at Everett Memorial Stadium. A plaque was placed on the sidewalk outside the stadium where the ball landed. The Bellingham franchise played at Joe Martin Field, a venue with a seating capacity near 1,600. The park is currently the home of the Bellingham Bells of the West Coast Collegiate Baseball League. Following the 1994 season, the Bellingham Mariners and Everett Giants swapped cities and the M's affiliate became the Everett AquaSox. After the 1996 season, the Bellingham Giants moved south to Keizer, Oregon, and became the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes.

Bellingham Technical College

Bellingham Technical College is located in the Pacific Northwest town of Bellingham in Washington State. Just a mile northwest of downtown Bellingham, the campus resides about 90 miles north of Seattle and 60 miles south of Vancouver, British Columbia. It is one of several community colleges in the area, including Whatcom Community College and Northwest Indian College. BTC teaches Basic Academic Skills and students can take the GED at BTC. It is home to the Whatcom Community College Orcas and the Bellingham Slam of the International Basketball League, as well as the Bellingham Roller Betties roller derby league.

Bellingham Sportsplex

The Bellingham Sportsplex is an American multi-use sports facility located in Bellingham, Washington. Fairhaven College

Fairhaven College of Interdisciplinary Studies is an interdisciplinary liberal arts college at Western Washington University. Instead of completing the general education requirements at Western, students take interdisciplinary classes at Fairhaven which aim to cover the same breadth and depth of subjects, but within small, interdisciplinary seminars. When it comes time to move onto "concentrated studies" students have the option of pursuing any of the majors or minors offered by Western Washington University, but may also choose to shape their own interdisciplinary concentration or major, combining independent study, internships, and Western Washington University courses with Fairhaven courses to define their course of study. Another unique feature of the college is almost all classes follow a small seminar format rather than a lecture. Class enrollment is rarely above twenty students and will sometimes have two professors for a given class instead of only one. Another distinction of Fairhaven College is that students do not receive letter grades but are instead given narrative evaluations, in addition to writing their own self-evaluations, for each class.

Fairhaven Station

Fairhaven Station, also called Bellingham, is a train station serving Amtrak's Cascades route, as well as a bus station serving Greyhound Lines and local Whatcom Transportation Authority buses, in Bellingham, Washington, United States. The station was built in 1995, and is near the Bellingham Cruise Terminal, the southern connection for the Alaska Marine Highway. Water Taxi services and seasonal whale watching excursions also provide connections from the Bellingham Cruise Terminal to the San Juan Islands. Fairhaven Station is owned by the Port of Bellingham and is the last northbound stop in the United States on the Amtrak Cascades before it enters Canada (passengers clear either US and Candian Customs in Vancouver, BC so trains do not stop at the border).
