Monrovia

Monrovia is the capital city of the West African country of Liberia. Located on the Atlantic Coast at Cape Mesurado, Monrovia had a population of 1,010,970 as of the 2008 census. With 29% of the total population of Liberia, Monrovia is the country's most populous city. From January 7, 1822 until the Liberian Declaration of Independence from the American Colonization Society on July 26, 1847 some 3,198 ex-Caribbean slaves settlers from the Lesser Antilles, who had escaped from their slaveholder or were born free, left the Caribbean islands and came to Liberia with the help and support of the American Colonization Society and other establishment organizations. The ex-Caribbean slaves came to Liberia to live a better life, to be free, and to establish self-governance. The first ex-Caribbean slaves who came to Liberia were from Barbados; some 500 to 1,000 ex-Caribbean slaves arrived in Liberia. The second group of settlers who came from the Caribbean islands were from Trinidad and Tobago; they were some 345 ex-Caribbean slaves, followed by some 620 ex-Caribbean slaves from Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. Another group of settlers, some 350 ex-Caribbean slaves, came from Saint Kitts and Nevis. The last two groups of settlers from the Caribbean islands were some 483 from Grenada and some 400 from Saint Lucia. As job opportunities and development growth increased, the ex-Caribbean slaves moved through Grand Cape Mount, Bomi County, Montserrado, Margibi County and other regions of Liberia to seek jobs and other opportunities. Monrovia is Liberia's cultural, political and financial hub. The body that administers the government of Greater Monrovia District is the Monrovia City Corporation. Founded on April 25, 1822, Monrovia was the second permanent Black American settlement in Africa after Freetown, Sierra Leone. Monrovia's economy is shaped primarily by its harbour and its role as the location of Liberia's government offices. It is the world's poorest city according to TheRichest.

Liberian National Museum

The National Museum of Liberia is a national museum in Monrovia, Liberia. Initially housed in the First Executive Mansion on Ashmond Street of the city which is now used as a library, it was established by an Act of the National Legislature in 1958 under the administration of Liberias 18th President, Dr William V.S. Tubman. Partly funded by UNESCO, in coordination with the Department of Public instructions, its primary goal was to obtain, preserve and display cultural artefacts and other historical items which depict the countrys heritage. Lake Piso

Lake Piso, also known as Lake Pisu and Fishermans Lake, is an oblong tidal lagoon in Grand Cape Mount County in western Liberia, near the town of Robertsport. At an area of 103 km2, it is the largest lake in Liberia. Its name originates from a local term meaning "pigeons hole" – a reference to the flocks of pigeons that once came to Lake Piso for water.

Sapo National Park

Sapo National Park is a national park in Sinoe County, Liberia. It is the countrys largest protected area of rainforest and its only national park, and contains the second-largest area of primary tropical rainforest in West Africa after Taï National Park in neighbouring Côte dIvoire. Agriculture, construction, fishing, hunting, human settlement, and logging are prohibited in the park. Sapo National Park is located in the Upper Guinean forest ecosystem, a biodiversity hotspot that has "the highest mammal species diversity of any region in the world", according to Conservation International, and in the Western Guinean lowland forests ecoregion, according to the World Wide Fund for Natures ecoregions classification scheme.

Gola Rainforest National Park

The Gola Rainforest National Park was declared by President of Sierra Leone Ernest Bai Koroma and enacted by the Parliament of Sierra Leone in December 2010. The park amalgamates Gola North Forest Reserve, Gola East Forest Reserve and Gola West Forest Reserves, only being Sierra Leones second national park. The GRNP is Sierra Leones largest tract of Rainforest, and covers 71,070 hectares in the east of the country. Recent biological surveys show that the Forest is home to more than 330 species of bird, 14 of which are threatened, over 650 species of butterfly, 49 species of mammals including a population of 300+ chimpanzees, pygmy hippopotamus and a much dwindled forest elephant population. See the Gola Forest Programme website for more information. The GRNP is part of the Upper Guinea Forest, a Biodiversity Hotspot that stretches from Guinea to Togo. The Forest has been commercially exploited in the past with over 20,000 hectares being logged between the 1960s and 1980s and has recently been under pressure for the exploitation or Diamonds, Gola and Iron ore and was subject to a recent report by Global Witness. However since the 1990s the forest has been the subject of a conservation project to protect the forest for the long term whilst ensuring the involvement and livelihood improvement of forest edge communities. The project is a collaboration between the Government of Sierra Leone, the Conservation Society of Sierra Leone and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds. A similar action has also been instituted across the Liberia border in the Liberian Gola Forest Community since the two communities share similar culture and people as well as animal and plant species.

Cape Palmas

Cape Palmas is a headland on the extreme southeast end of the coast of Liberia, West Africa, at the extreme southwest corner of the northern half of the continent. The Cape itself consists of a small, rocky peninsula connected to the mainland by a sandy isthmus. Immediately to the west of the peninsula is the estuary of the Hoffman River. Approximately 21 km further along the coast to the east, the Cavalla River empties into the sea, marking the border between Liberia and the Côte d'Ivoire. It marks the western limit of the Gulf of Guinea, according to the International Hydrographic Organisation . Approached from the sea, there are several landmarks at the cape. Offshore from the estuary of the Hoffman lies the small, oblong shape of Russwurm Island, which was named after the first black governor of Maryland In Africa (later Republic of Maryland), John Brown Russwurm. This island is connected to the peninsula by a breakwater. There is also a lighthouse warning of the numerous shoals in the surrounding sea area. Clearly visible from offshore is a white building with an enormous golden orb on the roof, this being the masonic lodge hall located in the city of Harper, Liberia.

Gbarnga

Gbarnga is the capital city of Bong County, Liberia, lying north east of Monrovia. During the First Liberian Civil War, it was the base for Charles Taylor's National Patriotic Front of Liberia. Cuttington College, a private, Episcopal-affiliated institution, is located near the town. Its campus was once home to the Africana Museum, which was destroyed during the civil war. As of the 2008 census, Gbarnga has a population of 34,046. Of this, 16,080 were male and 17,966 female; it is the fourth-most populous urban area in Liberia. Gbarnga is the hometown of Tamba Hali, a professional football player of the Kansas City Chiefs of the National Football League in the United States. The town is twinned with Baltimore, Maryland, in the United States.

Seaview Golf Club

The Seaview Golf Club is the owner of Liberia’s only eighteen holes golf course located opposite the Unity Conference Center and situated on one hundred acres of landscape where the St. Paul River empties into the Atlantic Ocean in Virginia, Montserrado County, Liberia. It is located about 10 kilometers northwest of downtown Monrovia, the capital of the West African Republic of Liberia. The Sea View Golf Course was formally established in June 2004 by the Liberia Golf Association under the Chairmanship of Dr. C Nelson Oniyama. Another golf course in Liberia is on the premises of the Firestone plantation in Harbel in Margibi County.

Nimba National Forest

Nimba National Forest is a national forest in Nimba County, Liberia. The forest, which borders Guniea and Côte d'Ivoire, has east and west sections that cover 95.91 km² and 91.46 km² respectively. It is also known as the Mount Nimba Forest Reserves.

Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex

The Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Stadium is a multi-purpose stadium in Paynesville, Liberia built in 1986. It is used mostly for football matches and has an athletics track, though it has also been used for a reggae concert, political rallies, IDP refuge, and Ebola treatment. The largest stadium in Liberia, its spectator capacity is 35,000.

Gabriel Tucker Bridge

The Gabriel Tucker Bridge formerly the People’s Bridge, is a bridge over the Mesurado River in Monrovia, Liberia. It was built between 1972 and 1976. The construction caused some minor disruption to local settlements and the Liberian National Museum had to be relocated in the mid-1970s to facilitate the structure. It was designed by Gabriel Johnson Tucker, who Liberian President William R. Tolbert had named in his honor. The bridge connects United Nations Drive to Bushrod Island via Providence Island.

Edward J. Roye Building

The Edward J. Roye Building is a wrecked skyscraper on Ashmun Street in the commercial district of Monrovia, the capital city of Liberia. Constructed as the headquarters of the True Whig Party, it is one of the most prominent buildings in the city. In the building's earlier years, it included a grand auditorium, and before the 1980 coup d'état, it hosted government meetings such as sessions of the Legislature in 1975, as well as non-governmental conventions such as the Liberian Federation of Trade Unions in 1977. It sits in the heart of the city's pre-coup commercial district, near locations such as the former offices of the American Colonization Society. Considering that the Party had become defunct following the 1980 coup, the General Services Agency appropriated the building in 2011, and in view of the building's ruined state, the building was closed for construction in late 2013. The action provoked anger among the leaders of the rump TWP, who considered their party still to be the owners of the building and filed suit to have themselves declared the rightful owners and to have government officials enjoined from further possession of or construction at the property.

Sanniquellie

Sanniquellie is a city and the capital of Nimba County and Sanniquellie-Mahn District, Liberia. It is located in the north-east of the country at coordinates 07°21'49" N 008°42'40" W. The average altitude of the city is 420 metres above the sea level. As of the 2008 national census, the population stood at 11,415. The most represented tribes are Mano, Gio and Mandingo. Sanniquellie is situated on the unpaved road connecting Yekepa, Ganta, Gbarnga, Kakata, and Monrovia. The average rainy season lasts from May to October, dry season from mid-October to April/May. The coldest month is the second half of December and first half of January. The main religion is Christianity (Catholics, Adventists, Methodists) and Islam. You can also find Jehovah's Witnesses and some minor churches there. The city is divided to quarters and communities (Main Street, Bonnah Suah Compound, Charlie Kpowin Community, Veinpa, Dokie Quarter, Dahnlopa, Animal Farm, Airfield Zone 1, Airfield Zone 2, Old Barracks, New Barracks, Gono Quarter, Floyd Island, Plumcor community, Underground Community). An important concern is the issue of ex-combatants, as some of them did not benefit from the reintegration programs (DDRR) and some of those are facing the troubles to find stable employment in the rural economy. More than 2,000 of the population are employed by "Jungle Water Group of Investment" a Liberian owed company that was established by business man Mr. Tomah S. Floyd Sr a Liberian, Nimbadian from Duo Gorton a village in Nimba Co. Many others have turned to commercial motorcycling and other forms of tertiary sector employment, but for a small number of them crime is how they earn their daily bread.

Mount Wuteve

Mount Wuteve is a mountain located in Liberia, whose summit is the highest point in Liberia. It is located in the Guinea Highlands range, whose parent range is the West Africa Mountains. Data from the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission reveals that the correct elevation of its summit is 1,440 meters, and not the previously quoted 1,380 meters. It is also known as Mount Wologizi among locals of the Loma tribe.

Cape Mesurado

Cape Mesurado, also called Cape Montserrado, is a headland on the coast of Liberia near the capital Monrovia and the mouth of the Saint Paul River. It was named Cape Mesurado by Portuguese sailors in the 1560s. It is the promontory on which African American settlers established the city now called Monrovia on 25 April 1822. There is a lighthouse on Cape Mesurado, located in the Mamba Point neighborhood of Monrovia and in the cape's northwestern portion, that was established in 1855. It is currently inactive, although the Liberian government is seeking financial assistance to restore and reactivate the lighthouse.

Barclayville

Barclayville, the capital and most populous settlement in Grand Kru County, is located in southeastern Liberia about 10 miles inland from Picinicess. As of the 2008 national census, the population stood at 2,733. The Barclayville township straddles the banks of the Na River. Roads from Kanweaken to the northwest, Pleebo to the southeast, and to Picinicess and Grand Cess to the southeast, all intersect at Barclayville. In March 2006 the United Nations reported completion of the Na River bridge at Barclayville, connecting the Kanweaken and Pleebo roads for the first time.

Tubmanburg

Tubmanburg, also known as Bomi and formerly known as Vaitown, is the capital of Bomi County in Liberia. It lies in the Bomi Hills northwest of Monrovia and was an iron ore and diamond mining centre until it was largely destroyed in the First Liberian Civil War. During the Second Liberian Civil War, it was the headquarters of the Liberians United for Reconciliation and Democracy rebel group. Most residents are members of the Vai tribe. A key attraction is Blue Lake, also known as Bomi Lake. Blue Lake is about 300 feet deep. It is suspended midway between the peaks of the surrounding mountains which, with the sun’s reflection, give the lake its blue hue. The waters spring from a huge pit dug by the Liberia Mining Company, an American-owned company that ceased operations in the country because of the presumed depletion of iron ore in the area. As of the 2008 census, Tubmanburg has an estimated population of 13,144. Of this, 6,555 were male and 6,559 female. The town is populated predominantly by the Gola ethnic group, which hails from Bomi County. The town also has a significant Mandingo and Vai population. During the Ebola virus epidemic in West Africa a treatment center was opened in the town with the assistance of the United States.

Roberts International Airport

Roberts International Airport (IATA: ROB, ICAO: GLRB), informally also known as Roberts Field, is an international airport in the West African nation of Liberia. Located near the town of Harbel, the single runway airport is about 35 miles (56 km) outside of the nation's capital of Monrovia, and as an origin and destination point is referred to as "Monrovia" and locally is often referred to simply as "RIA." The airport is named in honor of Joseph Jenkins Roberts, the first President of Liberia. The facility with its 11,000 feet (3,400 m) long runway was an emergency landing site for the United States' Space Shuttle program and is the principal airport in the country and one of only two with paved runways in the country. The airport is clearly the nation's busiest most important aviation facility, with the only connections to Europe. While Monrovia's secondary airport, Spriggs Payne, is much closer to the city center and possesses the nation's only other paved runway, it has not had scheduled commercial service since ASKY Airlines suspended service in November 2014.

James Spriggs Payne Airport (IATA: MLW, ICAO: GLMR) is an airport located 5 kilometres (3 mi) from downtown Monrovia, the capital of the Republic of Liberia in West Africa. The airfield is located within the busy and thickly settled Sinkor section of the city, and is therefore convenient to the business and political districts of the capital. Whereas Roberts International Airport is the primary aviation facility for the city and indeed the entire country, Spriggs-Payne has the only other paved runway in Liberia and only other international commercial flights into and out of Liberia. The airport is named after James Spriggs Payne who was president of the Republic of Liberia in 1868–70 and again in 1876–78.

Bensonville

Bensonville is the capital city of Montserrado County, Liberia. As of the 2008 national census, its population stood at 4,089. Bensonville is located 20 miles away from the national capital, Monrovia, which is also located in Montserrado County. It is a commercial center for the surrounding agricultural area. It was the birthplace of William R. Tolbert, Jr., the 20th president of Liberia. Before he was killed in a coup in 1980, Tolbert had planned to make Bensonville the country's new capital city. Prior to the Liberian Civil War, Bensonville's industrial activity included producing milled rice, sawn wood, soap, plastics, paints, furniture and fixtures, cement blocks, oils, processed fish, and confections.

Bopolu

Bopolu is the capital city of Gbarpolu County, Liberia, and is located 100 kilometers north of Monrovia. As of the 2008 census, Bopolu has a population of 2908. Of this, 1547 were male and 1361 female. Bopolu was once the center of the Kondo Confederation, which included the Dei, Gola, Lorma, and Vai tribes. The area surrounding Bopolu reached its height of prominence under King Bosan. Traders sent slaves, ivory, gold, and camwood were to the Vai and Dei tribes in exchange for salt, tobacco, guns, and European cloth. Cultivation of rice and cassava is now Bopolu's main economic activity.

Greenville

Greenville is the capital of Sinoe County in southeastern Liberia and lies on a lagoon near the Sinoe River and the Atlantic Ocean. It is located about 150 miles southeast of Monrovia. As of the 2008 national census, the population stood at 16,434. A hoard of bronze Kru currency rings discovered in the Sinoe river at Greenville is now in the British Museum. The town was built in about 1838 by colonists of the Mississippi Colonization Society.Part of what was then the Mississippi-in-Africa colony , Greenville was named after Judge James Green, one of the first Mississippi Delta planters to send a group of former slaves to Liberia. The town was destroyed in the Liberian Civil War but has since been rebuilt around a port for the local logging industry. Before the civil war, the town's main exports were lumber, rubber, and agricultural products. The Sapo National Park lies near the town. Boats sail from Greenville to Monrovia and Harper. Greenville experiences on average 185 rainy days per year. The mean temperature of the town's coolest month is 24 degrees Celsius and 27 degrees Celsius for its warmest month. Greenville has the third largest port in Liberia. The port has two quays (70 m and 180 m long respectively) on the inner side of the breakwater for berthing facilities, with an existing water depth of 6 m below chart datum.

Zwedru

Zwedru is the capital of Grand Gedeh County, one of the 15 counties in Liberia. Zwedru is located in Tchien District of Grand Gedeh County, near the Cavalla River in the country's south-eastern region and near the border with Côte d'Ivoire. It is located 350 miles southeast from the capital city of Monrovia. The town is a stronghold of the Krahn tribe. The town gets its name after the head of a local anteater creek. Zwedru is surrounded by a lot of forests, and lies in a tropical region. The north-western section of Zwedru has an important forest region with rare bird species. Before the Liberian Civil War, Zwedru was known for timber production and its wood products industry. As of the 2008 census, Zwedru has a population of 23,903. Of this, 11,828 were male and 12,075 female. Zwedru residents are mainly Krahn, Mandingo, Fulani and Gio and Mano tribes.
