Mansion of Bahjí

The Mansion of Bahjí is a summer house in Acre, Israel where Baháulláh, the founder of the Baháí Faith, died in 1892. His shrine is located next to this house. The whole area was called Al-Bahjá . The area was originally a garden planted by Sulayman Pasha, who was the ruler of Acre, for his daughter Fatimih, and he named it Bahji. Later the area was further beautified by `Abdullah Pasha, and in 1831 when Ibrahim Pasha besieged Acre he used the property as his headquarters. The property was well known for its beautiful gardens and pond fed by an aqueduct. The property then fell into the possession of a Christian family, the Jamals. In 1870 `Udi Khammar, a wealthy merchant from Acre who also originally owned the House of `Abbúd, bought some of the land from the Jamals close to the mansion of `Abdullah Pasha and built the Mansion of Bahji, over an earlier and smaller building, which Abdullah Pasha had had built for his mother. `Udi Khammar had built the house for his family, and when he died was buried in a tomb in the south-east corner of the wall directly around the building. In 1879 an epidemic caused the inhabitants to flee and the building became vacant. `Abdul-Bahá first rented, and then purchased, the mansion for Baháulláh and the Baháí holy family to live in, and Baháulláh moved from Mazraih to Bahji and resided in the building until his death. In 1890 the Cambridge orientalist Edward Granville Browne met Baháulláh in this house; after this meeting he wrote his famous pen-portrait of Baháulláh. When Baháulláh died in 1892 he was interred in one of the surrounding buildings, and that building became the shrine of Baháulláh,. The site has since been beautified with paradise gardens, which are termed Haram-i-Aqdas and are intersected by a circular path which serves to circumambulate the shrine of Baháulláh. The Mansion, shrine, and surrounding gardens are among the most sacred spots on earth for Baháís and are Baháí pilgrimage sites.

Terra Sancta Church

The Terra Sancta Church also alternatively Church of St. Francis is the name given to the Roman Catholic church located in the Old City of Acre in northern Israel. It should not be confused with the other Franciscan temple of the city, the Church of St. John Baptist. According to historical documents of Acre since the thirteenth century the Franciscans gave great importance to the city. They believed that the founder of the Order of St. Francis of Assisi visited the city between 1219 and 1220. In 1217 the first Franciscan monastery, founded by Father Elia Da Cortona was built. After the occupation of the city by Muslims, the Franciscans had to leave Acre to return in 1620 and the church Terra Sancta were established in 1673. It is located in the center of Old Town, north of the structure known as Khan el-Franj. The church is recognizable by the red needle of its Gothic tower, whose color distinguishes it from other towers and minarets in place.

Shrine of Bahá'u'lláh

The Shrine of Baháulláh, located in Bahjí near Acre, Israel, is the most holy place for Baháís and represents their Qiblih, or direction of prayer. It contains the remains of Baháulláh and is near the spot where he died in the Mansion of Bahjí. The Shrine of Baháulláh is composed of a central area that contains a small, tree-filled garden surrounded by paths covered with Persian rugs. A glass roof was constructed by Qulám-‘Alíy-i-Najjár after the death of Baháulláh. At the northwest corner of the central area there is a small room containing Baháulláhs remains. The central area has doors to a number of other rooms that have, in recent years, been opened to accommodate the growing number of pilgrims and visitors. The shrine, after `Abdul-Bahás death, was occupied by Mírzá Muhammad `Alí and his supporters, who forcibly took the keys to the shrine in January 1922. The governor of Acre ordered the keys to be returned to the authorities and a guard was posted at the shrine. In early 1923 the keys were returned to Shoghi Effendi. In the 1950s, Shoghi Effendi had made plans for a future superstructure, which would surround the whole area and would include a platform with 95 marble columns of 6 meters high. Shoghi Effendi has called the shrine the Daryá-yi-Núr, which has taken the Kúh-i-Núr under its shadow. The shrine and its surrounding gardens, as well as the Mansion of Bahjí, was inscribed on the World Heritage List in July 2008.

Tel Kabri

Tel Kabri is an archaeological site, home to one of the largest Middle Bronze Age Canaanite palaces in ancient Israel, and the largest such palace excavated as of 2014. Kabri is named for the abundance of its perennial springs—as described in the Etymology section below—the presence of which has led to the site's occupation and use as a water source from the Pottery Neolithic period to the present day. Located in the Western Upper Galilee, the site was at the height of its power in the MB, controlling much of the surrounding region. Kabri declined as a local power at the end of the MB, but the site continued to be occupied at times, on a much reduced level, up until the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. Since 1957, Tel Kabri has been excavated by the Israel Antiquities Authority , formerly the Israel Department of Antiquities and Museums , as well as Israeli and American universities. Among the discoveries at the site by the two full-scale archaeological expeditions, two have attracted particular attention from the archaeological community. The first finding to come to international attention was the discovery of Minoan-style frescoes in the palace at Kabri. As of 2015, these are the only Minoan-style frescoes ever discovered in Israel. Second, in 2013, the Tel Kabri Archaeological Project uncovered the oldest and largest known palatial wine cellar in the Ancient Near East in Kabri's palace.
