Bear Inn

The Bear Inn, today known as The Bear Hotel, is an inn on Cowbridge High Street in Cowbridge, Vale of Glamorgan, south Wales. The block stone building has a blue plaque on the front, marking its historical significance. It became a Grade II listed building on 12 May 1963. The inn is dated to the medieval period, around the 12th century. It was once probably a three-unit, lateral chimney, hall-house, later converted into a storeyed house. It has undergone much alteration over the years, and little remains of the original except the fireplaces, one of which is in poor condition. The fireplace lintels of carved stone are notable. The hall fireplace has two shields, one bearing a reversed lion rampant and the other a trefoil. The hall contains heavy ceiling beams, dated to the late 16th century. The plastered ceiling in the inner room is dated to the early 18th century. On the first floor there are plain-chamfered ceiling beams and roof trusses, although this is obscured. In the 18th century the first floor was converted into an assembly room, and subsequently the High Sheriff for the county often met with noblemen of the county at the Bear Inn. The Glamorganshire Agricultural Society was established in 1772 at the inn. In this era, the inn served as a stopping point for those in need of changing horses, while other similar establishments, such as the Cowbridge Arms, Royal Oak, and Spread Eagle did not offer such a service. The northern side of the house once had wing attached to it during the medieval period but this no longer exists. In the early 19th century, Christopher Bradley was succeeded by Michael Glover as inn host. In the early 20th century, the county Court occasionally sat at the Bear Inn when it had such needs in Cowbridge. Immediately nearby is the Cowbridge Grammar School.

Cowbridge town wall

Cowbridge town wall is a Grade II*-listed medieval wall in the small market town of Cowbridge in the Vale of Glamorgan, south Wales. The walls were built by about 1300. It is believed that the purpose of the walls were to protect the Lord of Glamorgan's burgage plots and to provide a way of collecting tolls from the town's market, held twice-weekly. The wall originally had four gates. The North is believed to have been to first to go before the 18th century, followed by the West gate in 1754 and the East gate in 1771. Only the South Gate remains intact today. The South Gate and surrounding area is well-preserved, with two angle towers still intact. The Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales summarises it as the "remains of a stone curtain, describing a pentagonal figure about the central part of the borough of Cowbridge". The wall is 7.7 metres high, with an outside batter and walk inside which is 4.3 metres wide. It was subject to excavation in 1981–2. In 2004 the local council attached a blue plaque to the wall, which reads: "The Town Wall is now unique in Glamorgan. It was built by 1300 to enclose the "New Town" of Cowbridge".

Cowbridge Town Hall

Cowbridge Town Hall is a public building in the South Wales market town of Cowbridge. It is the meeting place for Cowbridge with Llanblethian Town Council, and also houses the town clerks office, administrative office, Cowbridge Museum and meeting rooms where public events are held. Until 1830, the town council met at the Guild Hall, located in High Street. The Guild Hall was also a regular venue for the Quarter Sessions which travelled around South Wales. The present town hall, a building dating back perhaps as far as the Elizabethan era, served as a prison or "House of Correction" until 1830, when it was converted into a town hall to replace the Guild Hall, which was demolished at that date. In 1824 it was reported that "Plans and estimate of the expense attending the erection of a new Town Hall ... have been procured by the Revd. John Montgomery Traherne at his own expense". The new Town Hall was completed in 1830 under the direction of Isaiah Verity of Ash Hall, who in gratitude was made a Freeman of Cowbridge; the building retained the prison cells but no courts were ever held there. The money for the reconstruction was raised by public subscription. Local MP Christopher Rice Mansel Talbot made a large donation towards the building costs and was also awarded the freedom of the borough. Eight of the original prison cells are still intact, six of which house the exhibits of Cowbridge Museum. The remainder of the building is used by the town council and for public events. The museum holds archaeological finds from Cowbridge and district, as well as displays on the later history of the town, including industrial and domestic artefacts, a photographic collection, and a small historical costume collection. Cowbridge Town Hall is a Grade II* listed building .
