Romanian Church United with Rome

The Romanian Greek Catholic Church or Romanian Church United with Rome, Greek-Catholic is a sui iuris Eastern Catholic Church, in full union with the Roman Catholic Church. It has the rank of a Major Archiepiscopal Church and it uses the Byzantine liturgical rite in the Romanian language. Since 1994, Cardinal Lucian Mureșan, Archbishop of Făgăraș and Alba Iulia serves as head of the Romanian Greek-Catholic Church. On December 16, 2005, as the Romanian Church United with Rome, Greek-Catholic was elevated to the rank of a Major Archiepiscopal Church by Benedict XVI, Lucian Mureșan became its first Major Archbishop. Mureşan was eventually created a cardinal, at the Consistory of February 18, 2012. Besides the Archeparchy of Fǎgǎraș and Alba Iulia, there are five more Greek-Catholic eparchies in Romania: (Eparchy of Oradea Mare, Eparchy of Cluj-Gherla, Eparchy of Lugoj, Eparchy of Maramureș and Eparchy of Saint Basil the Great of Bucharest), as well as one eparchy overseas, the Romanian Catholic Eparchy of St George's in Canton, answering directly to the Major Archbishop and the Holy See, in the United States of America and Canada. According to data published in the 2012 Annuario Pontificio, the Romanian Greek-Catholic Church had 663,807 members, 8 bishops, 1250 parishes, some 791 diocesan priests and 235 seminarians of its own rite at the end of 2012. However, according to the 2011 Romanian government census, the number of its followers living in Romania was as low as 150,593, of which 124,563 are ethnic Romanians. The dispute over this figure is mentioned in the United States Department of State report on religious freedom in Romania. In addition, there are five other Catholic dioceses in Romania, belonging to the Latin Church, whose members are more numerous.

Arieseni

Arieșeni is a commune located in Alba County, Romania. It has a population of 1,921. The commune is composed of eighteen villages: Arieșeni, Avrămești, Bubești, Casa de Piatră, Cobleș, Dealu Bajului, Fața Cristesei, Fața Lăpușului, Galbena, Hodobana, Izlaz, Păntești, Pătrăhăițești, Poienița, Ravicești, Ștei-Arieșeni, Sturu and Vanvucești. It is a very popular ski resort among the people of Bihor and Alba counties having 3 ski-slopes: the old one is about 500 meters long, the second about 1,000 m and the third one, opened in January 2011 is the longest having 1,600 m. The first ski lift in Romania was installed in Arieșeni and with the opening of the new slope, the resorts has also got a brand new funicular. There are several notable natural tourist sites such as the Vârciorog Waterfall, Ghețarul de la Scărișoara, Groapa Ruginoasă, Piatra Grăitoare, Pătrăhăițești village, Bihorul Peak , etc.

Dacian fortress of Căpâlna

Situated at the top of a steep hill, the Dacian fortress of Căpâlna was built in the second half of the 1st century BC as a military defense, guarding the entrance from the Sebeș Valley to the capital of the Dacian kingdom, Sarmizegetusa Regia. It is supposed that the fortress was the residence of a Dacian chieftain. Archeological findings include ceramics, iron and bronze tools, silver and bronze jewellry and Roman coins from the Republican and Imperial periods. Around 2002 2003 a gold necklace and two gold earrings were discovered here. The fortress was witness to Dacian Roman battles during Trajan's Dacian Wars. In the first war, the fort was occupied by the Romans. Ultimately, it was burnt and destroyed by the Romans around 106 AD. The fortress is encircled by an elliptical wall . The wall was partially destroyed during the first war, and was hastily rebuilt just before the second war. Inside two terraces were found. On the higher level terrace, at the highest point, an observatory tower existed. A tower house was positioned strategically near the main fortified gate. A second gate positioned through the Sebeș Valley was blocked after the first war, sometime after 102 AD. The fort follows the architectural principles of the Dacian Fortresses of the Orăștie Mountains; the wall being the typical murus Dacicus. Outside the fortification three defensive ditches were found. During excavations from 1982 1983, Dacian sanctuary ruins were found. The site was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999.

Apulon

Apulon was a Dacian fortress city close to modern Alba Iulia, Romania from where the Latin name of Apulum is derived. The exact location is believed by many archaeologists to be the Dacian fortifications on top of Piatra Craivii, Craiva, Cricău, about 20 km north of Alba-Iulia. Apulon was an important Dacian political, economic and social center, the capital of the Apuli tribe. It was first mentioned by the Ancient Greek geographer Ptolemy in his Geographia, under the name Apulon. It is also depicted in the Tabula Peutingeriana as an important city named Apula, at the cross road of two main routes: one coming from Blandiana, the other from Acidava. The two roads merge at Apula, with the next stop on the route being Brucla. After the southern part of Dacia became a province of the Roman Empire, the capital of the Dacia Apulensis district was established here, and the city was known as Apulum. Apulum was one of the largest centers in Roman Dacia and the seat of the XIII Gemina Legion. The castra at Apulum is the largest in Romania, occupying 37,5 ha .
