Westland Tai Poutini National Park

Westland Tai Poutini National Park is located on the western coast of New Zealands South Island. Established in 1960, the centenary of the European settlement of Westland District, it covers 1,175 km², and extends from the highest peaks of the Southern Alps to a wild and remote coastline. It borders the Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park along the Main Divide. Included in the park are glaciers, scenic lakes and dense temperate rainforest, as well as remains of old gold mining towns along the coast. Franz Josef Glacier and Fox Glacier are two popular tourist attractions located within Westland Tai Poutini National Park. The park offers hunting opportunities for Red Deer, Chamois and Tahr and helicopter access allows hunters access to the rugged mountain areas. The popular Copland Track runs upstream from the Karangarua River bridge. Along with the mountain scenery visible from the track, there are hot springs at Welcome Flat Hut. In 2010 over 4,400 ha were added to the park consisting of a number of areas scattered throughout the park with the majority being to the east of Okarito Lagoon.

Paparoa National Park

Paparoa National Park is on the west coast of the South Island of New Zealand. It was established in 1987 and encompasses 306 km2. The park ranges from on or near the coastline to the peak of the Paparoa Ranges. A separate section of the park lies to the north and is centered at Ananui Creek. The park protects a limestone karst area. The park contains several caves, of which Metro Cave / Te Ananui Cave is a commercial tourist attraction. The majority of the park is forested with a wide variety of vegetation. The park was the site of the 1995 Cave Creek disaster where fourteen people died as a result of the collapse of a scenic viewing platform. The small settlement of Punakaiki, adjacent to the Pancake Rocks tourist attraction, lies on the edge of the park. The park is also located near the towns of Westport, Greymouth, and Barrytown.

Fox Glacier

The Fox Glacier is a 13 km long glacier located in Westland Tai Poutini National Park on the West Coast of New Zealands South Island. It was named in 1872 after a visit by the then Prime Minister of New Zealand, Sir William Fox.

Metro Cave / Te Ananui Cave

The Metro / Te Ananui Caves are a maze of limestone caves formed by the underground capture of Ananui Creek, a tributory of the Waitakere or Nile River. The caves are located in the Paparoa National Park in New Zealand, managed by the Department of Conservation. Parts of the cave system are accessible by cave tours and rafting, operated by a commercial tour operator out of Charleston.

Greymouth

Greymouth is the largest town in the West Coast region in the South Island of New Zealand, and the seat of the Grey District Council. The population of the whole Grey District is 13,650, which accounts for 42% of the West Coast's inhabitants. The Greymouth urban area had an estimated population of 9,850 . The District Council expects growth of 1.5% per year between 2006 and 2016.

Ruatapu

Ruatapu is a small town in the Westland District in the West Coast region of the South Island of New Zealand. The town's name stems from Ruatapu, a figure in Māori mythology. The town is located on a narrow strip of land between the Tasman Sea and Lake Mahinapua, a shallow lake that was originally a coastal lagoon. State Highway 6 runs through Ruatapu, connecting it to the nearby towns of Hokitika and Ross. The town's economy is based upon agriculture, as well as a large sawmill, operated by Westco Lagan, which mills Radiata Pine for further processing in Christchurch.

Franz Josef

Franz Josef is a small town in the West Coast region of the South Island of New Zealand. Whataroa is 32 kilometres to the north-east, and the township of Fox Glacier is 23 kilometres to the south-west. State Highway 6 runs through the town. The Waiho River runs from the Franz Josef Glacier to the south, through the town, and into the Tasman Sea to the north-west. The population was 330 in the 2006 Census, an increase of 9 from 2001. The town is named after the Franz Josef Glacier itself named by Julius von Haast in honour of the Emperor of Austria Franz Josef I of Austria. The glacier's terminal face is 5 kilometres from the town and its accessibility makes it a major tourist attraction and the reason many people visit Franz Josef. The town is within the Westland Tai Poutini National Park. Franz Josef offers many accommodation options for the up to 2,000 people staying overnight during the main season, ranging from hotels and motels to holiday houses, camping sites and backpacker accommodation. Other amenities include a petrol station, small but busy heliport and a number of restaurants and shops. The village is connected to the Franz Josef Glacier valley via walking tracks and a small sealed road leading into the valley from the highway just south of the village. Franz Josef village is also home to the West Coast Wildlife Centre, developed in 2010 and dedicated to hatching and rearing the world's two rarest species of kiwi, the rowi and Haast tokoeka. The centre offers bookings for behind the scenes tours of its kiwi hatching and rearing facilities.

Buller Gorge

The Buller Gorge is a gorge located in the northwest of the South Island of New Zealand. The Buller River flows through the deep canyon between Murchison and Westport. Land Information New Zealand lists two sections for the gorge, Upper Buller Gorge and Lower Buller Gorge. State Highway 6 runs alongside, but considerably above, the river through the gorge. The Stillwater Westport Line railway also runs through the gorge. New Zealand's longest swingbridge at 110 metres in length spans the Buller River 14 kilometres west of Murchison. That area also offers rides on a zip-line across the gorge as well as several short bush walks.

Kokatahi

Kokatahi is a locality on the West Coast of New Zealand. Hokitika is about 15 km to the north-west. The Kokatahi River flows through the area and into the Hokitika River to the north-west. Farming in the area started in the late 1860s to produce oats and vegetables to feed the gold rush miners and their horses. In 1900-1901 a dairy factory opened at Kokatahi.

Mount Tasman

Mount Tasman is New Zealand's second highest mountain, rising to a height of 3,497 metres . It is located in the Southern Alps of the South Island, four kilometres to the north of its larger neighbour, Aoraki Mount Cook, Mount Tasman sits on the South Island's Main Divide, on the border between Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park and Westland Tai Poutini National Park. It is the highest point in Westland District. The Māori name is believed to refer to the swelling in the neck of a shag when it is swallowing a fish.

Harihari

Hari Hari is a small rural settlement in the south west of the West Coast region of New Zealand's South Island. The name has a Maori meaning, from Te Aka Maori/English Dictionary, as "to take/carry joy" or, as local legend suggests, "come together in unison" from a Maori canoe paddling chant/song. In recent years, Hari Hari has been increasingly referred to as "Harihari" with Maori meaning as "ambulance". No official statutory process has taken place in order for this to happen. It is slightly inland from the Tasman Sea and the Saltwater Lagoon and is situated between the Wanganui and Poerua Rivers, 45 minutes south of the tourist town of Hokitika. State Highway 6 passes through the town on its route from Ross to the Franz Josef Glacier. The Westland District's largest town, Greymouth is 110 kilometres , and Hokitika 70 km to the north-east. Ross is 46 km to the north-east, and Franz Josef is 32 km south west. The population of Hari Hari and its surrounds was 348 in the 2006 Census, unchanged from 2001. Hari Hari was once a logging settlement and relics of a bush tramway that used to carry timber can be found in the area. Today, the forest in the area is protected and popular activities in the Hari Hari area include bushwalking, birdwatching, and trout and salmon fishing. The Inter-Wanganui Co-op opened a dairy factory at Hari Hari in 1908, but it is now a ruin. Hari Hari's main claim to fame occurred on 7 January 1931, when Australian aviator Guy Menzies landed upside down in a swamp near Hari Hari, completing the first solo flight across the Tasman Sea. Menzies, who had left Sydney 11 hours and 45 minutes earlier, was aiming for Blenheim but had been blown off course and mistook a swamp for flat pasture suitable for landing. Despite the accident, he was unharmed. On 7 January 2006, the 75th anniversary celebrations of the feat were held in Hari Hari, with roughly 400 people in attendance. To mark the occasion, Dick Smith recreated Guy Menzies' flight, though Smith chose to land upright in Hari Hari.

Lake Brunner

Lake Brunner is the largest lake in the northwestern South Island of New Zealand, covering an area of 40 km². The lakes outflow is the Arnold River, a tributary of the Grey River. The lake lies 31 kilometres to the southeast of Greymouth. The main settlement close to the lake is Moana, on the northern shore. Located several kilometres inland from the coast road, it is less frequently visited by tourists than many of the West Coasts scenic highlights, but it is becoming increasingly popular, in part due to its reputation for fishing. Lake Brunner was named by John Rochfort for the 19th century explorer Thomas Brunner. The Māori name for the lake, Kotuku moana, means "Sea of herons". The New Zealand freshwater mussel is found in the lake. By 1976 twenty percent of the catchment of the lake was farmed and there was a population of 84 at the settlement of Moana.

Lyell

Lyell is the site of a historic gold mining town in the Buller Gorge in the South Island of New Zealand. It lies on State Highway 6. The location is now a campsite maintained by the Department of Conservation. None of the original buildings remain but a track from the campsite leads to a cemetery and an old stamping battery. The gold rush in Lyell was in 1862.

Lake Mapourika

Lake Mapourika is located on the West Coast of New Zealands South Island. It lies north of Franz Josef Glacier, and the out-flowing Ōkārito River drains it into the Ōkārito Lagoon. It is the largest of the West Coast lakes, a glacier formation from the last ice age. Since the water from glacial melts no longer drains into the lake, it is filled with fresh rain water which runs though the surrounding forest floor, collecting tannins, giving it its dark colour. As the winds of the region sweep high above the mountains of the Southern Alps, the water is left unruffled and quite reflective of the forest on the lake fringes.

Franz Josef Glacier

The Franz Josef is a 12 km long glacier located in Westland Tai Poutini National Park on the West Coast of New Zealands South Island. Together with the Fox Glacier 20 km to the south, and a third glacier, it descends from the Southern Alps to less than 300 metres above sea level. The area surrounding the two glaciers is part of Te Wahipounamu, a World Heritage Site park. The river emerging from the glacier terminal of Franz Josef is known as the Waiho River.

Lake Matheson

Lake Matheson, near the Fox Glacier in South Westland, New Zealand, is famous for its reflected views of Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount Tasman. A traditional mahinga kai for Māori people, the lake contains long finned eel as well as being home to many water birds.

St Mary's Catholic Church

St Mary's Catholic Church in Hokitika is registered by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust as a Category I structure, with registration number 1705. It was designed and constructed by the Luttrell brothers. Following a structural assessment triggered by the February 2011 Christchurch earthquake, the church was closed to the public in June 2012. The church belongs to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Christchurch.

Shantytown

Shantytown is a tourist attraction in the West Coast Region of the South Island of New Zealand. Located 10 km south of Greymouth, the town was constructed and opened in the early 1970s and consists of 30 re-created historic buildings making up a 19th-century gold-mining town. The town is surrounded by native forest, and is one of the region's most popular attractions.

Punakaiki

Punakaiki is a small community on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand, between Westport and Greymouth. The community lies on the edge of the Paparoa National Park. The Pancake Rocks are a very popular tourist destination at Dolomite Point south of the main village. The Pancake Rocks are a heavily eroded limestone area where the sea bursts through several vertical blowholes during high tides. Together with the 'pancake'-layering of the limestone (created by immense pressure on alternating hard and soft layers of marine creatures and plant sediments), these form the main attraction of the area. The Pancake Rocks are presently explorable by a number of walkways winding through the rock formations, parts of these wheelchair-accessible and others carved into stairways up and down the rock faces. State Highway 6, the only through road on the West Coast, passes through the town.

Denniston

Denniston is a small settlement, 15 kilometres (9 miles) east of Westport, on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand. It is situated on an exposed rocky plateau, 600 metres (2000 feet) above sea level, in the Papahaua Ranges. During the first few decades of the 20th Century, up to 1400 people lived in the townships on the Denniston Plateau to service the large coal mines there. Coal was transported in railway wagons from the plateau via the Denniston Incline to Conns Creek, where steam locomotives of New Zealand Railways took coal trains to the port of Westport. The Denniston Incline closed in 1967. The plateau now has a population of fewer than 10 people, and virtually all the buildings and structures have gone, although many historical relics remain – scattered throughout the plateau and incline area amongst the scrub vegetation. There are proposals for future mining on the Denniston Plateau.

Waiuta

Waiuta is the location of a historic mining town on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand. It is now abandoned and considered one of New Zealand's most popular ghost towns and a great tourist attraction. Located 58 km north of Greymouth and 21 km south of Reefton in Ikamatua, New Zealand, it was the site of a gold mine until 1951 but the collapse of the mine made it uneconomic. A number of buildings remain and there are still residents in what remains of the town. Nowadays Waiuta has become a tourist attraction, with few of the original buildings still intact that include the former police station, three cottages and the old barber shop. Waiuta is a perfect spot for nature lovers, historians and photographers alike.

Douglas Glacier

The Douglas Glacier is a glacier in New Zealands Southern Alps located between Mount Sefton and Mount Brunner. It is named after the explorer Charles Edward Douglas. The glacier sits in a valley and is fed by materials consisting of many streams and frequent avalanches which drop from its névé down a cliff face of over 1,000 feet. The glacier itself was approximately 5 miles long in 1908. The glacier has a relatively high rate of moraine materials, consisting of "friable phyllites and schistose grauwackes". At the foot of the glacier is a lake that was created by glacier recession. Reports from 1892 and 1934 indicated it had "an anomalously slow lake development". The Douglas River begins in the lake at the foot of the glacier.

Lake Daniell

Lake Daniell is a lake in the Tasman District of the South Island of New Zealand. It is drained by Frazer Stream which in turn feeds into the Alfred River and is surrounded by old growth beech forest. A tramping track leads to the lake and an adjacent hut, the Manson-Nicholls Memorial Hut. In 2002 there was a search in the area for a missing tramper who was part of a group staying at the lake. The tramper, a 14-year-old male, was found dead next to the Alfred River. Until 2007 the lake was officially named as Lake Daniells.

Lake Ianthe

Lake Ianthe is a lake located on the West Coast of New Zealands South Island. A number of small streams flow into the lake and it empties into the Wanganui River. It is close to the coast and near the rural settlements of Pukekura and Hari Hari, and State Highway 6 runs along the eastern shore of the lake on its route between Ross and the Franz Josef Glacier. The lake is popular for boating, swimming, and trout fishing. In the early 20th century, a privately run bush tramway was established from the end of the New Zealand Railways Departments Ross Branch railway to logging interests in the Lake Ianthe area. This bush tramway was closed in 1959 when the sawmilling operation that owned the line shut down.

Lake Kaniere

Lake Kaniere is located on the West Coast of New Zealands South Island. It lies 30 kilometres southeast of Hokitika, and drains into the Tasman Sea via the Kaniere and Hokitika rivers. At 22 km², it is second only to Lake Brunner in size among the West Coasts lakes. Mount Graham is on the west coast of the lake. A small hydroelectric station is located on the Kaniere River, close to the lakes outflow. Lake Kaniere is a popular location for leisure activities such as boating, fishing, picnicking, and water skiing.

Lake Mahinapua

Lake Mahinapua is a shallow lake on the West Coast of New Zealands South Island. It is about 10 kilometres south of Hokitika and near the small town of Ruatapu. It was formerly a coastal lagoon, but the buildup of coastal dunes made it an inland lake roughly 500 metres from the Tasman Sea coastline. In 1907, the Lake Mahinapua Scenic Reserve was established to protect the land around the lake, and a number of short walking tracks run through this area. In 2012, the West Coast Treetop Walk was opened nearby, which also offers views towards the lake. Other activities that take place around the lake are picnicking, camping, and various water-based activities. Species of birds such as black swans, grey ducks and mallard ducks live around the lagoon, while the surrounding bush provides a habitat for species such as parakeets and tui. State Highway 6 passes between the lake and sea on its route between Hokitika and Ross. The Ross Branch railway also once ran past the lake; it opened to Ruatapu on 9 November 1906, was extended to Ross on 1 April 1909, and closed on 24 November 1980.

Mount Hopkins

Mount Hopkins is located in the Southern Alps of New Zealand's South Island. It lies 25 kilometres to the southwest of Aoraki / Mount Cook, and rises to 2,678 metres . Several rivers have their sources on or close to the slopes of Mount Hopkins, notably the Landsborough River to the west, the Dobson River to the east, and Hopkins River to the south. At Mount Hopkins, the traditional boundaries of the former Otago, Westland, and Canterbury Provinces meet, these boundaries survive today as provincial districts, and only serve for the purposes of determining anniversary days. However, the modern day boundaries of the Otago region, the West Coast region and the Canterbury region meet further south at Mt Strauchon, which is also on the Main Divide.

Mount Adams

Mount Adams is a mountain in the West Coast region of New Zealand's South Island. The summit is roughly 19 km south of Harihari and reaches 2,208 metres in height. Mount Adams lies to the west of the main divide of the Southern Alps and drains into the Whataroa and Poerua catchments. Both of these rivers flow westwards to the Tasman Sea. There are two small glaciers on the south-eastern slopes that drain the summit ice cap; the Escape Glacier and the Siege Glacier .

West Coast Treetop Walk

The West Coast Treetop Walk is a canopy walkway through mature rimu forest near Hokitika on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand. The tourist attraction was built by Australian eco-tourism company Canopy01 in 2012 and comprises a 450 metres long elevated steel walkway, viewing tower, and cantilever. The walkway leads through the canopy of mature native West Coast forest dominated by rimu at a height of around 20 to 25 metres above ground. It passes close to the crowns of mature rimu trees and sits well above smaller trees and tree ferns. The loop walk takes in views of the nearby Lake Mahinapua and includes a gently swaying cantilever extending out into the forest canopy. A 47 metres tall steel viewing tower with a spiral staircase offers even more spectacular views over the surrounding forest and northern ranges of the Southern Alps including Toaroha Range, Diedrichs Range and Mt OConnor, as well as further south in good viewing conditions. The tourist attraction is locally run via a 45-year concession lease from the Department of Conservation NZ and includes a car park and cafe, with the actual canopy walkway accessible via a 5-minute walk from the cafe.
