Top Attractions in Zala

Hévíz

Hévíz is a spa town in Zala County, Hungary, about 8 kilometres from Keszthely. The town is located near Hévíz lake, the world’s second-largest thermal lake, but biologically the biggest active natural lake. Its temperature is affected by the combination of hot and cold spring waters, coming from 38 m deep underground. The water breaks out from a spring cave, with approx. 410 liters per second, with a temperature of 40 °C. The city provides facilities for visitors seeking to use the medicinal waters of the lake, including hotels, parks, sports and entertainment. The effects of the lake was known by the ancestors as well, people lived here even at the end of the Stone Age. The foundations of bath culture was laid by the Romans in the 2nd century. The city and the bath began developing significantly in the 18th century, related to the Festetics Family. They started scientific researches about using the water medically, and for healing. The biological stability of the lake is shown by the temperature of the water, which has not changed for years and even on the coldest winter days doesn’t drop below 24 degrees Celsius. That makes bathing possible in the lake the whole year round. In the summer the water temperature can reach 37 degrees Celsius.

Festetics Palace

The Festetics Palace is a Baroque palace located in the town of Keszthely, Zala county, Hungary. Its construction, started by Kristóf Festetics in 1745, lasted more than a century, during which the palace, built at first on the foundations of a ruined castle, was tripled in size, in two subsequent building campaigns, most recently in the 1880s, to designs by Viktor Rumpelmayer, living in Vienna. When Rumpelmayer died in 1885, the work was carried to completion by architects Gusztáv Haas and Miksa Paschkisch. The result is one of the three largest country houses in Hungary. The counts Festetics were progressive landowners: Kristóf Festetics founded a hospital, Pál Festetics established a school in the town, and in 1797, Count György Festetics opened an agricultural college, the Georgikon, the first of its kind in Europe, which is still in operation as a faculty of the University of Pannonia. The library wing was built by György Festetics in 1799—1801, with guidance from András Fischer of the Vienna Academy. Execution was entrusted to local artisans. The dining room has stucco decor by Mátyás Vathner from the town of Pápa. Stonework was executed by the local mason József Zitterbart, locksmithing by a local master craftsman, József Dobrolán, tiled stoves by József Pittermann and inlaid floors and woodwork by master carpenter János Kerbl, who was also responsible for the fittings in the library. The book collection was made available to students of the Georgikon. The great book collection that remains in the castle is the only extensive aristocratic library that survives in Hungary. The result is that the central axis of the garden front is centered on one pavilion of the corps de logis, rather than on the prominent central tower of the extension built in the 1880s, with prominent mansard roofs and richly framed dormer windows typical of the neo-Baroque French Second Empire style, and neo-Renaissance woodwork in some of the interiors; on the entrance side facing the town the axis remains centered on the original baroque structure, now a flanking wing. The elaborate expansion was carried out for Count Tasziló Festetics, who married Lady Mary Douglas-Hamilton on 2 June 1880, and who entertained Edward, Prince of Wales in October 1885 and again in 1888, during his "incognito" Hungarian visits, accompanied by his great friend the Duke of Hamilton, Festetics brother-in-law. Portraits of Festetics in tartans remain in the palace. Unlike the surrounding area, the palace was not damaged during World War II. The palace has housed an independent museum since 1974; it is visited by 200,000 people each year. The parterres in which the palace stands were extended in the nineteenth century with a naturalistic landscape park in the English fashion. Open-air concerts are held on the grounds during the summer. The stable block now houses a collection of coaches and carriages.

Zalakaros

Zalakaros is a town in Zala County, Hungary. Zalakaros is famous for its thermal bath. Zalakaros, the tiniest city of Hungary, gained its fame in 1967, when an oil prospect drilling resulted in a nearly 96°C hot thermal spring coming up from 1000 meter. The certified medical water proved very effective in the treatment of chronic arthritis, chronic gynaecological, dental and rheumatic diseases, and prior to and after orthopaedic surgeries, neurosurgeries and operations. The wellness-, leisure- and conference hotel Karos Spa lies only 400 metres from the centre of Zalakaros in romantic atmosphere, surrounded by vineyards, forests and gently sloping hills. This 4-star hotel in Zalakaros based its services on the effective thermal water. The Harmony Beauty Centre and the Spa Health Care of the hotels offers wide range of services for the guests.

Zrinski Bridge

The Zrinski Bridge or Zrínyi Bridge connects the Croatian A4 and the Hungarian M7 motorways, spanning the Mura River. As it also spans Hungarian–Croatian border, a joint border checkpoint is located north of the bridge. The bridge is located between Goričan interchange of the A4 motorway and the M70 motorway interchange of the M7. The bridge is a part of a major north–south transportation corridor in Croatia and Hungary and a part of European routes E65 and E71 as well as the Pan-European corridor Vb. The bridge is a composite continuous girder structure executed across five spans, 216 meters long overall. It consists of two 15-meter parallel structures, each carrying one carriageway, set 80 centimeters apart. Construction and naming of the bridge was announced in 2007 by Croatian and Hungarian governments following a joint session, and ceremonially opened on 22 October 2008 as the last piece of the motorway route connecting the Hungarian capital, Budapest, to the Croatian capital, Zagreb, and the Port of Rijeka after 40 years of construction. The bridge was designed by Uvaterv and built by Hidroelektra-Niskogradnja at a cost of 8 million kuna . The cost was shared equally by Croatia and Hungary. The bridge is maintained by Hrvatske autoceste and Állami Autópálya Kezelő Zrt.
