Hants Exhibition Arena

The Hants Exhibition Arena is owned by the Windsor Agricultural Society and is located at 239 Wentworth Street in Windsor, Nova Scotia. The arena is home to the Hants County Exhibition (the oldest agricultural fair in North America), and the following hockey teams: Windsor Royals of the Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League, Avon View Avalanche, Kings-Edgehill High School Avon River Rats and West Hants Minor Hockey. The arena was built in 1981 and has a seating capacity of 2300 people. The arena has hosted numerous Nova Scotia 4-H Provincial Shows, and the 2001 Don Johnson Cup tournament.CBC's Hockey Day in Canada in 2002 was broadcast from here. The arena also plays host to showjumping, the annual pumpkin weighoff, the occasional concert and many horse shows throughout the summer season.

Hants County Exhibition

The Hants County Exhibition is an annual fall fair held in Windsor, Nova Scotia. It is the oldest continuously run agricultural fair in North America. It was first held on the grounds of Fort Edward beginning in 1765. It has been running continuously since 1815. September 2015 marks the 250th anniversary of the Hants County Exhibition. The fair is now held at the nearby Hants Exhibition Arena and exhibition grounds. The Hants County Exhibition is held every year over two weekends in September. The fair hosts a wide range of activities. There are horticulture, vegetable, craft and art exhibits every year. During the exhibition horses, miniature horses, hunter and jumper classes are in the arena. There are ox pulls and heavy horse pulls as well. There are beef and dairy cattle displays and competitions. There are poultry and waterfowl exhibits to be seen throughout the weekend. Aside from the arena, there is a very large industrial building and fair grounds. There are many commercial exhibits for the public to enjoy. Within the building there is live music and events throughout the fair. On the fair grounds, there is a carnival for kids to enjoy. There are numerous rides and games throughout the weekend. Local 4-H clubs use the arena and industrial building throughout the exhibition for displays and events. For the rest of the year, the exhibition grounds are host to other events. There is a pumpkin weigh-off featuring pumpkins grown with Atlantic Giant seeds. This annual event has many displays and competitions. The 2015 Hants County Exhibition will take place on the weekends of September 18–20 and 25–27.

Haliburton House Museum

The Haliburton House Museum is part of the Nova Scotia Museum system and is located in Windsor, Nova Scotia. It was originally built in the 1830s for Thomas Chandler Haliburton, a Windsor native who was one of Canadas first famous authors). His "Sam Slick" stories won him acclaim around the English-speaking world of the 1840s, and though Haliburtons famous character was fictitious, the home has also been referred to as the "Sam Slick House" informally for many years. The house was added to during Haliburtons time, but successive owners also made major changes to the house until the 1920s. In 1939, the province acquired the home and in 1940 opened the site as the Haliburton Memorial Museum. Though Haliburton auctioned off the property and the contents of the home when he left for England in 1856, the museum does have some furniture and artifacts that belonged to him, including his writing desk. Most of these items were procured by donation to the Nova Scotia Museum to coincide with the 1940 opening. The rest of the museum is furnished in period pieces from the museums collection. The Museum is open to the public from June 1 October 15 every year.

Shand House Museum

The Shand House Museum is part of the Nova Scotia Museum. Located in Windsor, Nova Scotia, it was built in 1890-91 for Clifford and Henrie Shand. It is an Queen-Anne style late-Victorian Era home, and most of its elaborate machine-made trim features are still intact. It contains most of the original familys belongings, including furniture, dishes, artwork, toys, photos and books which date to the turn of the century. Many pieces of the homes furniture were made at the nearby Windsor Furniture Factory, which was in operation in the late 19th and early 20th century Windsor. Unusually for its time, the home was constructed with an indoor plumbing, central heating, and was wired for electric lighting within a year of its completion. Clifford Shand was a local businessman and early bicycle enthusiast . His father, Andrew P. Shand, was part-owner in the Windsor Furniture Factory, and craftsmen from the factory made not only much of the furniture, but most of the elaborate trim that still decorates the inside of the house. Throughout the home there are many photos and trophies attesting to Cliffords bicycling exploits, as well as many paintings done by his wife, Henrie. Only four people ever lived in the home: Clifford and Henrie, and their two children, Errol B. Shand and Gwendolyn V. Shand. The house was donated to the Nova Scotia Museum by their daughter Gwendolyn, who lived in the house until her death in 1982. The home was opened as a Museum in 1985. While the family were noted local figures, the house is primarily maintained not as a memorial to the Shand family, but as a very well preserved example of the architectural, economic, and social history of 1890s Nova Scotia. The museum is currently open from June 1 to October 15 every year.

Fort Vieux Logis

Fort Vieux Logis was a small British frontier fort built at present-day Hortonville, Nova Scotia, Canada in 1749, during Father Le Loutres War . Ranger John Gorham moved a blockhouse he erected in Annapolis Royal in 1744 to the site of Vieux Logis. The fort was in use until 1754. The British rebuilt the fort again during the French and Indian War and named it Fort Montague . The site of the fort is near the field where the Acadian Cross and the New England Planters monument are located. Despite archeological efforts, the exact location of the fort is unknown. Despite the British Conquest of Acadia in 1710, Nova Scotia remained primarily occupied by Catholic Acadians and Mikmaq. During King Georges War, the British tried to occupy further up the Bay of Fundy, starting with Grand Pre. They built a palisade which was involved with in the Siege of Grand Pre.
