Laurier House

Laurier House is a National Historic Site in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, located at 335 Laurier Avenue East . It was formerly the residence of two Canadian Prime Ministers, Sir Wilfrid Laurier and William Lyon Mackenzie King. The house was built in 1878, but had significant later alterations. Laurier House exhibits elements of the Italianate manner as well as traces of Second Empire style. Laurier lived there from 1897 until his death in 1919. His wife Zoé Laurier willed the house to Mackenzie King upon her death in 1921. King lived there from 1923 until his death in 1950. King willed the house to the people of Canada upon his death. The government then briefly considered designating Laurier House as the permanent official residence of the Prime Minister. However, the Prime Minister at the time, Louis St. Laurent, opposed designating Laurier House an official residence, probably because he personally preferred a different residence and/or because he and his fellow Liberals did not want future Conservative Prime Ministers residing at Laurier House. 24 Sussex Drive was designated the Prime Ministers official residence in 1951. Many distinguished guests from abroad were received at this house, such as Britains King George VI, Sir Winston Churchill, Charles de Gaulle, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and others. Under the terms of the Laurier House Act of 1951, the house and its grounds were entrusted to the National Capital Commission, the Department of Public Works, and the Public Archives. Since 1988, the house has been administered by Parks Canada as part of the national park system. However, the NCC continues to maintain the grounds, and the national archives retains ownership of all archival materials in the house. Parks Canada operates the site as a public museum. Laurier House is open to the public for guided tours from Victoria Day in May until Thanksgiving in October.

White Wind Zen Community

The White Wind Zen Community is a Sōtō Zen Buddhist association based at the Zen Centre of Ottawa in Ottawa, Ontario, with branch centres in Wolfville, Nova Scotia and Harrow, England. The Community is led by the Venerable Anzan Hoshin roshi. It consists of both a monastic order, the Northern Mountain Order, and a large community of associate, general, and formal lay students. The WWZC was founded in 1985 as the White Wind Zazenkai, named after the Hakukaze-ji monastery of Anzan Hoshin roshis teacher, the late Ven. Yasuda Joshu Dainen Hakukaze. The association was renamed "White Wind Zen Community" in 1989. While Anzan Hoshin roshi is still in permanent residence at the Ottawa centre, he retired from public teaching in 1991 and currently teaches only monastic and formal students. Lay teaching is currently performed by his Dharma-successors, the Ven. Shikai Zuiko o-sensei and the Ven. Jinmyo Renge osho, and by practice advisors trained by Anzan Hoshin roshi. In addition to offering an intensive schedule of practice year-round, including sittings, sesshin and outreach of a Western Zen centre, the WWZC provides a large number of individual students outside of commuting distance of the monastery or its branches with long-distance training. The long-distance training program provides students practice interviews and daisan via e-mail, telephone, or letter, and grants students access to a library of over 2000 recorded dharma talks. The WWZC also publishes books and audio recordings through its publishing arm, Great Matter Publications.

Goodwin House

Goodwin House is a prominent heritage building in Ottawa, Canada. Located at 312 Laurier Avenue East it was built by railway executive George Goodwin from 1899 to 1900. It is one of the largest mansions ever built in the city. It later became a convent for the Grey Nuns, and during the Second World War was used as the headquarters of the Canadian Womens Army Corps. In 1978 it was bought and restored by St. John Ambulance, who used it as their national headquarters. Recently it was sold to Amnesty International who today use it as their Canadian headquarters.

Dutchy's Hole Park

Dutchys Hole Park is a park on the Rideau River in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. It is part of the downtown Ottawa neighbourhood of Sandy Hill. The park has a wading pool, playground, and a football field, called Robinson Field. Pathways connect the park with Strathcona Park, the Rideau Campus of the University of Ottawa and via a former train bridge with Parc Riverain/River Road Park across the Rideau River in Vanier. In 2006, Dutchys Hole was adopted by the Rotaract Club of Ottawa as a part of the City of Ottawa Adopt-a-park program. One of three locations the City of Ottawa uses to release Mute Swans and Australian Black Swans that inhabit the Rideau River during the summer months.

St. Paul's Eastern United Church

University of Ottawa

The University of Ottawa is a bilingual public research university in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The main campus is located on 42.5 hectares in the residential neighbourhood of Sandy Hill, adjacent to Ottawa's Rideau Canal. The university offers a wide variety of academic programs, administered by ten faculties. It is a member of the U15, a group of research-intensive universities in Canada. The University of Ottawa was first established as the College of Bytown in 1848 by the first bishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Ottawa, Joseph-Bruno Guigues. Placed under the direction of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate, it was renamed the College of Ottawa in 1861 and received university status five years later through royal charter. On 5 February 1889, the university was granted a pontifical charter by Pope Leo XIII, elevating the institution to a pontifical university. The University was reorganized on 1 July 1965 as a corporation, independent from any outside body or religious organization. As a result, the civil and pontifical charters were kept by the newly created Saint Paul University, federated with the university. The remaining civil faculties were retained by the reorganized university. The university is co-educational and enrolls over 35,000 undergraduate and over 6,000 post-graduate students. The university has more than 185,000 alumni. The university's athletic teams are known as the Gee-Gees and are members of Canadian Interuniversity Sport.

St. Clement Catholic Church

St. Clement Parish is a bilingual Roman Catholic parish community located in Ottawa, Canada entrusted to the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter. It was the first parish in the world to be authorized to celebrate the Mass and other sacraments in Latin only, according to the liturgical norms of the 1962 Roman Missal, since these norms were suppressed in the 1960s. Since June 3, 2012, St. Clement Parish operates out of Ste-Anne Church in Lowertown.

Corktown Footbridge

The Corktown Footbridge, also referred to as the Somerset Street bridge or simply the Somerset Bridge, is a footbridge in Ottawa, Canada built across the Rideau Canal. The 70-metre bridge is located about 400m south of the Laurier Avenue Bridge. It was opened on September 21, 2006. It links Somerset Street East in Sandy Hill and the University of Ottawa with Somerset Street West in Centretown. Previously the canal had been crossable at this point only during the winter months, when it was frozen. People continued to cross late in the season when the ice was melting, which some worried was unsafe. The idea of such a bridge has existed since at least 1984, first being proposed by councillor Diane Holmes. It went through many years of review and feasibility studies. During the 1990s it was supported by Regional Councillor Madeleine Meilleur, but there was never enough money to get it built. The bridge was most recently championed by city councillor Clive Doucet, and city council narrowly approved the $5 million bridge project in January 2005. The University of Ottawa and its students were strong supporters of the bridge during its construction. The bars and restaurants of Elgin Street were also eager to have more students. The bridge also links Centretown to the Campus Transitway Station just across the canal.

Australia House

Australia House in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada is the official residence of the Australian High Commissioner to Canada. The house is located on a corner lot at 407 Wilbrod Street in the Sandy Hill neighbourhood of Ottawa, near to a number of other embassies and official residences. The house was built in 1910 by William Davis, and is believed to have been designed by John W.H. Watts. Davis died under inauspicious circumstances in 1916 and it lay vacant for several years before being purchased by Colonel Cameron Macpherson Edwards, who had earlier lived at 24 Sussex Drive. The Edwards left in 1937 and rented the house to Germany to house the Consul General Dr. Erich Windels, who was friendly with Canadian Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King, who lived nearby. Windels was expelled from Canada upon the declaration of war in September 1939. In part because of the war, the Australian delegation in Ottawa was looking for more spacious accommodations, and the newly vacant building met these needs. In 1940 it became the residence of the High Commissioner and they bought the building from the Edwards soon after. It has housed every High Commissioner since, as well as visiting Australian dignitaries, including any Australian Prime Ministers who visit Ottawa. From 1947 until 1953 the building was home to ex-Prime Minister Frank Forde during his term as Australian High Commissioner. Since January 2012, Her Excellency Ms Louise Hand is the latest High Commissioner to reside at Australia House. The chancery of the High Commission located at Suite 710, Clarica Centre II, at 50 OConnor Street in Downtown Ottawa.

The Major-General George R. Pearkes Building is the principal location of Canada's National Defence Headquarters and is located in downtown Ottawa, Ontario. NDHQ actually comprises a collection of offices spread across the National Capital Region, however it is most commonly identified with the Major-General George R. Pearkes Building at 101 Colonel By Drive in Ottawa. The building and the adjacent Rideau Centre are both served by OC Transpo's Mackenzie King Transitway station.

The Embassy of the Republic of Croatia in Ottawa is located in Toller House at the corner of Chapel and Daly Streets in the Sandy Hill neighbourhood of Ottawa. The building was originally constructed in 1875 in Domestic Gothic Revival style by Henry Horsey and J. Sheard, architects. The first occupant was J.H. Plummer, the new Ottawa manager of the Bank of Commerce. Two years later, Télesphore Fournier, a Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada, moved in with his family. It was bought by Auditor General of the Dominion’s Currency Frederick Toller in 1882. His family owned it until 1912 when it was bought by cabinet minister Louis-Philippe Brodeur who owned it until 1931. The house was owned by a group of nuns who used it as a residence and school until 1968. It was then rented out to students from the nearby University of Ottawa. The heritage building was purchased for the Republic of Croatia by the Croatian-Canadian community after Croatia gained its independence in 1993. Local fundraising also paid for the significant restoration work that completely refurbished the estate. It opened as the Croatian embassy in 1999. The building was included amongst other architecturally interesting and historically significant buildings in Doors Open Ottawa, held June 2 and 3, 2012. Croatia also maintains a consular office in Mississauga.

Before this the embassy had been located in an office building on Slater Street in downtown. The embassy had previously been located in Sandy Hill, but in 1975 it had been gutted by fire. The ambassadorial residence is located at 190 Coltrin Road in Rockcliffe Park.

University of Ottawa Faculty of Law

The University of Ottawa Faculty of Law (U of O Law, uOttawa Law, or Ottawa Law) is the law school at the University of Ottawa, located in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, the nation's capital. Established in 1953, the faculty is today divided into civil law and common law sections, the two formally recognized legal traditions in Canada. The faculty is very highly rated and maintains close links with the legal communities in Quebec, Ontario and abroad. The faculty of law is also home to two highly respected bilingual law journals, one produced by the civil law section (Revue générale de droit) and the other produced by the common law section (Ottawa Law Review). The law school has produced a diverse array of successful alumni. Currently, in addition to the dean of the Civil Law Section at the University of Ottawa, the deans of the Robson Hall Faculty of Law, the Université de Sherbrooke Faculty of Law, and the Université de Montréal Faculty of Law have all previously obtained at least one law degree from the University of Ottawa Faculty of Law. UOttawa station

uOttawa Station is a future LRT station on the upcoming O-Train Confederation Line, replacing Campus station, which was a former bus stop on Ottawa's transitway. Located just east of the Rideau Canal at the western terminus of Somerset Street East, the station serviced the University of Ottawa's southern section and the Sandy Hill neighbourhood. A pedestrian tunnel runs under the station linking the university and the canal. Campus station was the eastern-most bus station located within Ottawa's downtown core, serving mainly as a drop-off and pickup for pedestrians, especially university students and staff. The Corktown Footbridge over the Rideau Canal was opened in September 2006 to link the Campus station to the Golden Triangle neighbourhood east of Elgin Street. The station will become an O-Train station on the Confederation Line after 2018 and the name will be changed to uOttawa. Effective April 24, 2016, both this station and the adjacent transitway has shut down to make room for the LRT construction. As a result, most Transitway buses now only serves Laurier to the north of uOttawa. However, routes 95, 98, and 97 have been rerouted onto King Edward Avenue and also serves the university at a bus stop near Templeton Street. All buses using this stop (like the Transitway station) also provides service between Laurier and Lees (eastbound only) Stations.

The facility was named in honour of Matt Anthony, a prominent figure in the Ottawa football community, playing for the Ottawa Rough Riders and later coaching the Gee-Gees as well as junior and high school football. Matt Anthony Field was renovated in 2011, the field surface was updated to FieldTurf Revolution, which was the first of its kind in Canada and only the second field with the artificial turf in North America. The facility holds a FIFA-recommended 2-Star designation, the highest synthetic turf rating possible. It is one of only approximately 20 FIFA 2-star fields in Canada.

Rideau Skating Rink

The Rideau Skating Rink was an indoor skating and curling facility located in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Consisting of a curling rink and a skating rink, it was one of the first indoor rinks in Canada. The Rideau Rink was scheduled to open on January 10 but unseasonably mild weather postponed the grand opening to February 1. It opened in January 25, 1889 for select V.I.P's although this was a misunderstanding and should not have denied entry to season ticket holders. It was located on Theodore Street, at Waller Street, at the present location of the Arts Hall of the University of Ottawa, near the Rideau Canal. While it was also used for figure skating, skating championships and curling, it is possibly most notable for its hockey use. It was the site of the first recorded organized women's ice hockey game on March 8, 1889. It was also the site of the first Ontario men's ice hockey championship game on March 7, 1891.
