Kaeson Youth Park

The Kaeson Youth Park is an amusement park located in Pyongyang, North Korea. Opening in 1984, the park is located near the Kim Il Sung Stadium and in the west foot of Moran Hill. The carousel, fun house and amusement park rides like the Ferris wheel comprise an area of 40 ha. The parks was erected as part of the Triumphal Arch dedication. As of 2013, the rides on offer were bumper cars, teacups, a swing ride and a double shot like vertical drop. It has been previously been described as being in poor repair.

Ryugyong Hotel

The Ryugyong Hotel (sometimes anglicised as Ryu-Gyong Hotel or Yu-Kyung Hotel) is a 105-storey pyramid-shaped skyscraper under construction in Pyongyang, North Korea. Its name is also one of the historical names for Pyongyang. The building is also known as the 105 Building, a reference to its number of floors. Construction began in 1987 but was halted in 1992 as North Korea entered a period of economic crisis after the fall of the Soviet Union. After 1992 the building stood topped out, but without any windows or interior fittings. In 2008 construction resumed. In 2011, the exterior was completed. The opening of the hotel has been scheduled several times but postponed.

Koryo Hotel

The Koryo Hotel is the second largest operating hotel in North Korea, the largest being the Yanggakdo Hotel. The Ryugyong Hotel is larger, but is not yet operating. The twin-towered Koryo Hotel building is 143 metres tall and contains 43 stories. Erected in 1985 under the scrutiny of Kim Il-sung, it was intended to "showcase the glory and strength of the DPRK." The hotel is rated three stars by Western standards. North Korea rates it as five stars. A section of the hotel reportedly caught fire on 11 June 2015 due to undisclosed circumstances, leaving the bridge between the two buildings badly damaged.

Korea Central Zoo

The Korea Central Zoo, also referred to as the Pyongyang Central Zoo, is the national zoo of North Korea. It is located near Mt. Taesong in downtown Pyongyang. The zoo has over 5,000 wild animals, comprising a total of 650 species, and covers an area of roughly one square kilometre. It was established in April 1959 at the instruction of Kim Il-sung.

USS Pueblo

USS Pueblo is a Banner-class environmental research ship, attached to Navy intelligence, which was attacked and captured by North Korean forces on 23 January 1968, in what is known today as the Pueblo incident or alternatively, as the Pueblo crisis. The seizure of the U.S. Navy ship and its 83 crew members, one of whom was killed in the attack, came less than a week after President Lyndon B. Johnsons "State of the Union" address to the United States Congress, just a week before the start of the "Tet Offensive" in South Vietnam during the Vietnam War, and only three days after 31 men of North Koreas "KPA Unit 12" had crossed the Korean Demilitarized Zone and killed 26 South Koreans in an attempt to attack the South Korean "Blue House" in the capital Seoul. The taking of Pueblo and the abuse and torture of its crew during the subsequent 11-month prisoner drama became a major Cold War incident, raising tensions between the western democracies and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics and Peoples Republic of China. North Korea stated that Pueblo deliberately entered their territorial waters 7.6 miles away from Ryo Island, and the logbook shows that they intruded several times. However, the United States maintains that the vessel was in international waters at the time of the incident and that any purported evidence supplied by North Korea to support its statements was fabricated. Pueblo, still held by North Korea today, officially remains a commissioned vessel of the United States Navy. Since early 2013, the ship has been moored along the Botong River in Pyongyang, and used there as a museum ship. Pueblo is the only ship of the U.S. Navy still on the commissioned roster currently being held captive.

Arch of Triumph

The Arch of Triumph in Pyongyang was built to commemorate the Korean resistance to Japan from 1925 to 1945. It is the second tallest triumphal arch in the world, after Monumento a la Revolución in Mexico, standing 60 m high and 50 m wide. Built in 1982 on the Triumph Return Square at the foot of Moran Hill in the North Korean capital city of Pyongyang, the monument was built to honour and glorify President Kim Il-sungs role in the military resistance for Korean independence. Inaugurated on the occasion of his 70th birthday, each of its 25,500 blocks of finely-dressed white granite represents a day of his life up to that point.

Anhak Palace

The Anhak Palace is a royal residence of the Goguryeo kingdom that was built in 427 AD. It is located in Taesong-guyok, Pyongyang, North Korea. The palace featured landscaped gardens, described as an" "unskillful" natural landscape" according to one source. The layout of the palace closely followed the Chinese government system and its Confucian principles. The palace was built after the transfer of the capital to Pyeongyang, during which political groups which were familiar with Chinese culture become a new bureaucratic group under the Kings patronage.

Arch of Reunification

The Arch of Reunification is a sculptural arch located south of Pyongyang, the capital of North Korea. It was opened in August 2001 to commemorate Korean reunification proposals put forward by Kim Il-sung. The concrete arch straddles the multi-laned Reunification Highway leading from Pyongyang to the DMZ. It consists of two Korean women in traditional dress, symbolizing the North and the South, leaning forward to jointly uphold a sphere bearing a map of a reunified Korea. The sphere is the emblem of the Three Charters; the Three Principles of National Reunification; the Plan of Establishing the Democratic Federal Republic of Koryo and the Ten Point Program of the Great Unity of the Whole Nation. The original plan was to have a 55-metre pillar with three branches to represent Koreans in the north, the south, and overseas. The plinth of the structure is engraved with messages of support for re-unification and peace from various individuals, organizations and nations. The arch appeared on a postage stamp in 2002.

Tomb of King Tongmyong

The Tomb of King Tongmyŏng is a mausoleum located in near Ryongsan-ri, Ryŏkp'o-guyŏk, P'yŏng'yang, North Korea. One of the tombs is the royal tomb of Tongmyŏng the founder of the ancient Goguryeo kingdom, northernmost of the Three Kingdoms of Korea. In total, there are 63 individual tombs of the period. The area around the Tongmyong contains at least fifteen known tombs believed to belong to various vassal lords. The tomb has achieved World Heritage status as part of the Complex of Goguryeo Tombs inscribed by UNESCO in 2004 under Criteria and covering an area of 233 hectares with a buffer zone of 1,701 hectares . A unique feature of this and the other extant tombs in the area are its wall paintings depicting lotuses blossoming of that period indicative of Buddhism practiced in Korea .

Munsu Funfair

The Munsu Funfair is an amusement park located in Pyongyang, North Korea. Opened in 1984, the park is located near the Chongnyu Bridge, and is across the Taedong River from the Rungnado May Day Stadium.

Taedongmun

Not to be confused with Dongdaemun, the old east gate of Seoul Taedong Gate is the eastern gate of the inner castle of the walled city of Pyongyang, and one of the National Treasures of North Korea. Located on the banks of the Taedong River, from which it gets its name, the gate was originally built in the sixth century as an official Koguryo construction, and, along with the Ryongwang Pavilion and Pyongyang Bell, served as the center of the inner castles eastern defenses.The present construction dates from 1635, however, as the original was burnt to the ground during the Imjin wars of the late 16th century. The current gate features a granite base topped by a two-story pavilion, called the Euphoru Pavilion, because of its grand views of the Taedong River. This pavilion houses two hanging name plaques, one, on the first storey, reading "Taedong Gate" and calligraphed Yang Sa-on, and the other, reading "Upho Pavilion", on the second storey and written by Pak Wi . It is National Treasure #4 in North Korea.

Kumsusan Palace of the Sun

Kumsusan Palace of the Sun, formerly the Kumsusan Memorial Palace, and sometimes referred to as the Kim Il-sung Mausoleum, is a building near the northeast corner of the city of Pyongyang that serves as the mausoleum for Kim Il-sung, the founder and eternal president of North Korea, and for his son Kim Jong-il who succeeded him as the countrys ruler. The palace was built in 1976 as the Kumsusan Assembly Hall and served as Kim Il-sungs official residence. Following the elder Kims death in 1994, Kim Jong-il had the building renovated and transformed into his fathers mausoleum. It is believed that the conversion cost at least $100 million. Some sources put the figure as high as $900 million. Inside the palace, Kim Il-sungs embalmed body lies inside a clear glass sarcophagus. His head rests on a Korean-style pillow and he is covered by the flag of the Workers Party of Korea. Kim Jong-il is now on display in a room close to and very similar to his fathers. Kumsusan is the largest mausoleum dedicated to a Communist leader and the only one to house the remains of multiple people. It is fronted by a large square, approximately 500 metres in length. It is bordered on its northern and eastern sides by a moat.

Kim Il-sung Square

Kim Il-sung Square is a large city square in the center of Pyongyang, DPRK, and is named after the countrys founding leader, Kim Il-sung. Opened in August 1954, the square is located on the west bank of the Taedong River, directly opposite the Juche Tower on the other side of the river. It is the 30th largest square in the world, having an area of about 75,000 square meters which can accommodate a rally of more than 100,000 people. The square has a great cultural significance, as it is a common gathering place for rallies, dances and military parades and is often featured in media concerning the DPRK.

Liberation Monument

The Liberation Monument is a monument in Pyongyang, North Korea. It was built in 1947 to honour Red Army soldiers who took part in liberating Korea from Imperial Japanese occupation during the final stage of the Second World War. Soviet paratroopers took control of Pyongyang on August 24, 1945. The monument is composed of a stele surmounted by a five-pointed red star, with the entire structure attaining a height of 30 meters. The square base of the monument bares an inscrpition on each of its sides. The text, in Russian and Korean, describes the purpose of the monument. The monument is often visited by official delegations as well as by tourists and city residents. It has become traditional for newlywed couples to visit the monument as well.

Changchung Cathedral

Changchung Cathedral is the nominal cathedral of the Roman Catholic Bishop of Pyongyang, North Korea, located in the Changchung neighborhood of Songyo-guyok, Pyongyang. It is one of only four official Christian places of worship in Pyongyang. It operates under the Korean Catholic Association.

Chongam-ri Earthen Castle

The Chongam-ri Earthen Castle is a fortification thought to date to the Gojoseon period. Located near Pyongyang, North Korea, it is similar to other earthen fortifications of the period. It was made of alternating layers of soil, rock and sand. It is one of the National Treasures of North Korea. A jeweled, gilded crown dissolved in mercury, dating from the Three Kingdoms period, was found at the site.

Pyongyang Castle

Pyongyang Castle is one of the National Treasures of North Korea. The castle was attacked by Geunchogo of Baekje. During the 18th and 19th century, printed screens depicting grand views of the fortress were very popular.

Yongmyongsa

Yŏngmyŏng Temple was a Korean Buddhist temple located at the foot of Moranbong hill in Pyongyang, North Korea. Prior to its destruction in the Korean War, it was the largest and most important center of Buddhist worship in that city. Though it is unknown when the temple was founded, popular tales date it to the end of the Goguryeo kingdom. The temple was completely rebuilt under the Joseon dynasty. Under the Japanese occupation of Korea, the temple became a major tourist site in Pyongyang it was renowned for its beautiful riverside location and many cherry trees. In the 1920s it again underwent an extensive restoration funded by the Japanese government, who also officially changed its name to its Japanese pronunciation, "Eimei-ji". During that time, the temple was also confiscated from by the government, and given for use as a headquarters for the Rinzai sect of Japanese Zen buddhism. The Rinzai monks were tasked with converting the citizens away from traditional Korean buddhism as part of a government program to replace the old Korean culture with that of modern Japan The historic temple was destroyed during the U.S. carpet bombings of Pyongyang during the Korean War. The only building of the temple now standing is Pubyŏk Pavilion, a scenic lookout which was reconstructed after the war and was known for its beautiful views of the Taedong River; its stone pagoda and octagonal shrine also survived the bombings, and all three are registered as National Treasures of North Korea. The temple ran the Pobun Hermitage, located on Mt. Ryongak in Mangyŏngdae-guyŏk. In 2012 the Korean Central News Agency reported the "reconfirmation" of Lair of King Tongmyongs Unicorn, 200 metres from the Yongmyong Temple The discovery is credited to the History Institute of the DPRK, and the report states that "Unicorn Lair" is carved on a rock at the site. The report of the discovery also states this "proves that Pyongyang was a capital city of Ancient Korea".

Mansu Hill Grand Monument

The Grand Monument on Mansu Hill is a complex of monuments in Pyongyang, North Korea. The central part of the monument are two 22 meters high statues of North Korean leaders Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il, possibly made of bronze. Behind the statues is a wall of the Korean Revolution Museum building, displaying a mosaic mural showing a scene from Mount Paektu, considered to be the sacred mountain of revolution. Next to the statues, leading away from the building, there are two monuments showing many different soldiers, workers, farmers, and so on; Anti-Japanese Revolutionary Struggle and Socialist Revolution. These memorials are 22.5 meters high and 50 meters long. The long line of human figures depicted on them are on average 5 meters high. The monument was constructed in April 1972, then displaying only Kim Il-sung. Following the death of Kim Jong-il in 2011, a similar statue of him was erected on the north side of Kim Il-sung. At the same time, Kim Il-sungs statue was altered extensively. A new set of clothes was added and his facial expression modified somewhat.

East Pyongyang Grand Theatre

The East Pyongyang Grand Theatre is a 2500-seat theatre located in the North Korean city of Pyongyang. It was the site of the 2008 concert by the New York Philharmonic, which was the first significant cultural visit to North Korea by the United States since the Korean War. The hall was built in 1989 and is normally a venue for performances that celebrate North Koreas dynastic leaders and national achievements, and "revolutionary operas that depict North Koreas struggles in song and dance." The December before the concert, it had hosted an opera honoring Kim Jong-suk, the mother of North Korean leader Kim Jong-il. On New Years Day 2007, following reconstruction, the theatre hosted the Mansudae Art Troupe. Its "massive" stage needed an acoustic shell built to properly project the orchestras sound. The theatre was specifically chosen by Zarin Mehta, who rejected the home of the North Korea State Symphony as too small. The overall size is more than 62,000 square meters. A collonated great hall includes a mural of Ulrim Falls. According to a Reuters journalist, its architecture is "bland communist", and a "hulking, ramshackle structure the locals struggle to keep heated and lit at night."

Arirang Festival

The Grand Mass Gymnastics and Artistic Performance Arirang , also known as the Arirang Mass Games, or the Arirang Festival is a gymnastics and artistic festival held in the Rungrado May Day Stadium in Pyongyang, North Korea. The games usually begin in early August and end around 10 September. According to the Russian News Agency "TASS", "Arirang is a gymnastics and artistic festival, known as mass games. The extravaganza unfolds an epic story of how the Arirang nation of Korea, a country of morning calm, in the Orient put an end to the history of distress and rose as a dignified nation with the song 'Arirang'. The Arirang performance has been included in the Guinness Book of Records."

Ongryugwan

Okryugwan or Okryu Restaurant is a restaurant in Pyongyang, North Korea, founded in 1960. North Korea analyst Andrei Lankov describes it as one of two restaurants—the other being Ch'ongryugwan—which have "defined the culinary life of Pyongyang" since the 1980s, and a "living museum of culinary art". The chief chef is Ra Suk-gyong.

Party Founding Museum

The Party Founding Museum is a museum located in the Central District of Pyongyang, North Korea, on the south side of Mt. Haebang. The building was constructed by the Japanese occupation government in 1923. It was used as the South P'yŏngan Provincial Products Exhibition. After his return to Korea after World War II, Kim Il-sung is alleged to have founded the Korean Worker's Party in this building on October 10, 1945, and here were held many of that group's first meetings. Thus, in October 1970 it was turned into a museum dedicated to his exploits. Nearby, and also part of the museum, is the modest house he inhabited during his early days as president of North Korea. The building's architecture is of the typical Japanese colonial style; it is blocky and formal, and built out of dark gray stone. The roof of the building is modeled after the Imperial Diet Building in Tokyo. The first floor features an exhibition of photos and artifacts, while the second floor is preserved in its original historic appearance. A conference hall, a lounge, and two office rooms used by Kim Il-sung are preserved.

Potongmun

Potong Gate is the western gate of the inner complex of the walled city of Pyongyang . It was originally built in the sixth century as an official Koguryo construction, and was later rebuilt in 1473. It features a granite base topped by a two-story pavilion. The gates pavilion was destroyed by American bombings during the destruction of Pyongyang in Korean War, but was later reconstructed in 1955. It is listed as National Treasures #3 in North Korea.

Mausoleum of Tangun

The Mausoleum of Tangun is ancient burial site in Kangdong near Pyongyang, North Korea. It is claimed by North Korea to be the tomb of Tangun, legendary founder of Gojoseon, the first Korean kingdom. A pyramid was built on top of the grave in 1994. The complex occupies about 1.8 km² on the slope of Mount Taebak . The complex is divided into three major sections: restoration work area, stone statue area, and the burial site. Danguns grave is shaped like a step pyramid, about 22 m high and 50 m on each side. Google Maps View of the site. In both Koreas, Gojoseon was thought to have been founded in 2333 BCE. Current excavations, however, have dramatically changed the estimates of North Korean historians back to at least 3000 BCE, making the site c.5011 years old .

Taesŏngsan is a mountain in Taesong-guyok, Pyongyang, North Korea. It has an elevation of 270 metres. One popular visitor attraction on Taesŏngsan is the outdoor ice rink. Others include the Revolutionary Martyrs' Cemetery and the Korea Central Zoo.

Chilgol Church

Chilgol Church is one of the two Protestant churches in North Korea and is located in Kwangbok in west Pyongyang. It is dedicated to Kang Pan-sok, who was a Presbyterian deaconess and the mother of Kim Il-sung.
