Former Residence of Gan Xi

The Former Residence of Gan Xi, known as the Grand Courtyard of the Gan Clan, is located on Zhongshan South Road, Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, China. It lies next to Nan Bu Ting , the South station of the former Nanjing Police Station. It was built in the reign of the Jiaqing Emperor , the Qing Dynasty, and its first owner was Gan Xi’s father, Gan Fu. Originally known as "Fraternity Hall" , it now serves as the Nanjing Folk Museum. There is a well-known claim that the Forbidden City, the largest imperial palace complex, contains 9,999 and a half rooms, and that the largest mandarin estate, namely the Mansion of Confucius’ Descendants in Qufu, supposedly comprised 999 and a half rooms. As a large residence belonging to commoners, the Gan Family Mansion was often said by analogy to contain 99 and a half rooms, though in fact there are over three hundred. As the Nanjing Folk Museum, it displays an exhibition of handicrafts, including Yixing clay teapot, Chinese paper cutting, miniature engravings, Chinese opera make-up patterns , old clocks as well as local snacks. It is worth noting that some parts of the residence are still privately owned or occupied by certain companies.

Southeast University

Southeast University, colloquially Dongda is a public research university located in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, China. It is one of the oldest universities and the first coeducational university in China. It is a member of both Project 985 and Project 211, and sponsored by the Ministry of Education of China aiming to become a well-known world-class university. SEU has been ranked among the top 20 research universities in China, and among the top 500 in the world. In the official subject ranking conducted by the Ministry of Education of China, SEU has been ranked top three nationally in 8 fields including architecture, landscape architecture, urban planning, art history, civil engineering, electronic engineering, transportation engineering and biomedical engineering. Its predecessor, Sanjiang Normal College, was established in 1902 as a modern university on the campus of an academy which dates back to 258. In 1921, the school changed its name to National Southeast University and became the second national university in China. Later SEU was renamed to National Central University in 1927 and soon became the nations flagship university. In 1952, the university was split into eight institutions during the communism revolution. And its engineering school, the largest school in terms of faculty number and student enrollment, stayed in its original campus and form Nanjing Institute of Technology, which changed its name back to Southeast University in 1988.

Jinghai Temple

Jinghai Temple is a 15th-century temple located in Nanjing, Jiangsu, China. It is located in the southwest of Shizi Mountain . It was built to commemorate the voyage of Zheng He by the emperor in Ming Dynasty. In 1842, the terms of the Treaty of Nanking, China's first unequal treaty, was discussed in the temple. Jinghai temple was devastated during the Taiping Rebellion and the Second Sino-Japanese War. In 1988, the People's Government of Nanjing rebuilt the temple at its original site. In 1990, the temple was repurposed as the Historical Exhibition Museum of the Treaty of Nanking . After two expansions in 1996 and 2005, Jinghai Temple is now the Nanjing Jinghai Temple Memorial, in which both Zheng He's Voyage and the Treaty of Nanking related materials were exhibited. Jinghai Temple is a National 4A Level Scenic Spot, National Patriotism Education Base, and Nanjing Relic Protection Unit.

John Rabe House

The John Rabe House , located at Xiaofenqiao No. 1 in Nanjing, China, was where John Rabe stayed during the Nanking Massacre and protected more than 600 Chinese refugees in this house, and within its garden, from Japanese persecution. Today it accommodates the “John Rabe and International Safety Zone Memorial Hall” and the “John Rabe Research and Exchange Centre for Peace and Reconciliation.” The John Rabe House is located in the center of Nanjing, at southeast corner of Gulou campus of Nanjing University. John Rabe, former Siemens China Representative and Chairman of the International Committee for the Nanking Safety Zone, resided there from 1932 to 1938. It was also in this house where he wrote the famous “Diaries of John Rabe”. For almost half a century, Rabe's former residence in Nanking received little recognition until its location was publicized by the publication of Rabe's diaries in December 1996 by his granddaughter Ursula Reinhardt. When German president Johannes Rau visited Nanjing University in 2003, he expressed concern about the dilapidated condition of John Rabe’s former residence. After Rau’s visit and with his great encouragement to renovate the house, the project kicked off successfully in 2005. The Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Shanghai, together with Siemens Ltd. China, Bosch-Siemens Home Appliances signed an agreement with Nanjing University to renovate the house and construct the “The John Rabe and International Safety Zone Memorial Hall” and “John Rabe Research and Exchange Centre for Peace and Reconciliation.” The German side was to provide financing while Nanjing University was responsible for the renovation and maintenance of the John Rabe House as well as for the establishment and management of the Memorial Hall and Research Center.

Nanjing University

Nanjing University , or Nanking University, located in Nanjing, China, is one of the oldest and most prestigious institutions of higher learning in China. Following many changes through dynasties since CE 258, it was established as a modern school in 1902 in late Qing dynasty, and became a modern university in the early 1920s, the early years of Republic of China, being the first Chinese modern university with the combination of education and research, and also as a pioneer laying the foundations for the establishment of the modern educational system in China. Before the eve of establishment of People's Republic of China in 1949, the name was changed from National Central University to Nanjing University. Nanjing University is a top comprehensive research university. It is a member of the C9 League and Yangtze Delta Universities Alliance. C9 is China's "Ivy League" group of the top nine universities. Nanjing University is the Number 1 most selective university in China, having been ranked the most difficult to get in. It is among the distinguished group of universities that are consistently ranked among the best universities worldwide by all the major rankings: Shanghai Jiaotong University Academic Ranking, Times Higher Education and QS. Its distinguished strengths include its School of Chinese, which was co-ranked with Beida's as Number 1 in China. It is a national university directly under the Ministry of Education of China, largely funded by national and Jiangsu provincial governments, also with other income sources including donations. Nanda mainly has two campuses: Xianlin campus, located in northeast of Nanjing south of the Yangtze River, which is the home to most undergraduates and large part of graduates, and Gulou campus, located in the centre of Nanjing City, which has the highest educational standard in China, as reflected in its Gaokao (provincial school-leaving exams) being rated as the most difficult in the country.

Nanjing West Railway Station

Nanjing West Railway Station is a railway station in Nanjing, China. Originally named Nanjing Railway Station, it was first opened in 1908. as the end point of the Shanghai-Nanjing Railway . Later, it also became the starting point of the Nanjing-Tongling Railway. Located in Nanjings Xiaguan District, near the southern bank of the Yangtze River, opposite Nanjing North Railway Station on the northern side of the river, the station was a point where passengers traveling e.g. from Shanghai to Beijing would have to get off the train and board a river ferry, to resume their northward journey from the other station. After Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge was built, a new Nanjing Railway Station was constructed closer to the city center, and the original Nanjing Railway Station near the river was renamed to Nanjing West Railway Station, which name it has retained to this day. By the 21st century, the Nanjing West Station saw only a few trains a day. This station suspended passenger services 25 March 2012, and will be converted to a railway museum.

Zhonghuamen Railway Station

Zhonghuamen Railway Station is a railway station in Yuhua Road near Zhonghua Gate of Nanjing. It is a station of Nanjing-Tongling Railway with two platforms. Built in 1935 as part of the Jiangnan Railway, the station served as the main passage from central Nanjing to Wuhu. It was seriously damaged during the Second Sino-Japanese War as well as during the Chinese Civil War, and only returned to service in January 1948. The station underwent a series of expansion projects in the 1980s and 1990s, and was briefly renamed as Nanjing South Railway Station in 1998. On 6 January 2011, the station was restored to its old name to avoid confusion with the newer Nanjing South Railway Station, which is further uptown and operates high-speed rail services. The station is served by the nearby Zhonghuamen Metro Station.
