National Museums of Kenya

The National Museums of Kenya is a state corporation that manages museums, sites and monuments in Kenya. It carries out heritage research, and has expertise in subjects ranging from palaeontology, ethnography and biodiversity research and conservation. Its headquarters and the National Museum are located on Museum Hill, near Uhuru Highway between Central Business District and Westlands in Nairobi. The National Museum of Kenya was founded by the East Africa Natural History Society in 1910; the Societys main goal has always been to conduct an ongoing critical scientific examination of the natural attributes of the East African habitat. The museum houses collections, and temporary and permanent exhibits. Today the National Museum of Kenya manages over 22 regional museums, many sites, and monuments across the country.

Giraffe Centre

The Giraffe Centre is located at Karen, approximately 5 kilometres from the centre of Nairobi, Kenya. It was established in order to protect the endangered Rothschild giraffe, Giraffa camelopardalis rothschildi, that is found only in the grasslands of East Africa. The Giraffe Centre was started by Jock Leslie-Melville, the Kenyan grandson of a Scottish Earl, when he and his wife Betty captured a baby giraffe to start a programme of breeding giraffe in captivity at their home in Langata home of the present centre. Since then the programme has had huge success, resulting in the introduction of several breeding pairs of Rothschild Giraffe into Kenyan national parks. In 1979, Leslie-Melville added an education centre to his giraffe sanctuary. By 1983 he had raised enough money to establish the Giraffe Visitors Centre as a tourist destination in Nairobi. The main attraction for visitors is feeding giraffes from a raised observation platform. The centre is also home to several warthogs which freely roam the area along with the giraffes.

Stanley Hotel

The Stanley Hotel (currently called the Sarova Stanley) is a five-star hotel in Nairobi, Kenya. It is the oldest hotel in the city, having been established in 1902 by English businesswoman Mayence Bent, when the city was a railway halt. It is named after Sir Henry Morton Stanley, a Welsh explorer who is best known for his explorations of central Africa and his successful search for missionary and explorer David Livingstone. Since the early 1900s, the Stanley Hotel has been known as the traditional meeting place for those going on safari in Kenya. It has played host to royalty, politicians, movie stars, and authors. It is still used for national business conferences and tourism concerns. The Sarova Stanley has a total of 217 rooms as of 2015. Several of the suites and other rooms are named for dignitaries and other notable persons who have stayed in the hotel such as The Windsor penthouse suite, named for the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VIII); The Karen Blixen suite, named for Karen Blixen, author of Out of Africa; The Hemingway conference suite, named for author Ernest Hemingway, and The Churchill Ballroom, named for Winston Churchill, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. The Stanley Presidential Suite, named for famed explorer Henry Morton Stanley, has been used by Namibian President Sam Nujoma. The hotel has three restaurants: the Thorn Tree Café, named for the original acacia tree used for years as a message depot; the Thai Chi Restaurant; and the Pool Deck Restaurant. The Exchange Bar, named for the Nairobi Securities Exchange, is the successor to the Long Bar, where local stocks were first traded in Nairobi.

Nairobi Railway Museum

The Nairobi Railway Museum is a railway museum in Nairobi, Kenya, adjacent to Nairobi railway station. Containing exhibits from the defunct East African Railways, it was opened in 1971 by East African Railways and Harbours Corporation. It is today operated by Kenya Railways. The museum has maintained its rail connection. This allows for the efficient movement of museum exhibits for maintenance etc. It also allows additions to the collection to be easily placed on site. The three operational* steam locomotives are stored securely under cover within the main railway works. Visitors must request an appointment to view them. These three steam locomotives are used occasionally on tourist excursions within the metro Nairobi area and to Naivasha and Konza. The museums collection of locomotives is increasing with the addition of some early diesel locomotives and, examples of passenger coaches. Recently a working miniature railway has also been installed.

Gor Mahia F.C.

Gor Mahia Football Club , commonly also known as K'Ogalo (Luo for "House of Ogalo"), is a football club based in Nairobi, Kenya. They have won the Kenyan Premier League a record 15 times, two more than their arch-rivals AFC Leopards and have also won the FKF President's Cup a record 10 times. They are the only team from Kenya and the CECAFA region to win an African continental title to date, having won the African Cup Winners' Cup in 1987 after previously reaching the final in 1979. The club was formally established in February 17, 1968 as a merger of Luo Union and Luo Sports Club and won the national league at the first time of asking. Some of its original leaders were politicians Tom Mboya and Jaramogi Oginga Odinga. However the club was founded much earlier, in the 1910s, and participated intermittently in local tournaments in Western Kenya. Various groups used this name at different times. The club plays its home games at the Nairobi City Stadium. Alternatively they also play their home games at the Moi International Sports Centre and the Nyayo National Stadium. It has been proposed that the club hosts some of its home matches at its alternate stadiums in its earlier days, the renovated Kisumu County Stadium and the Mombasa Municipal Stadium. The club won the Kenya National Football league in 1968, having been formally founded only in February of the same year. In 1976, Gor Mahia won the national league unbeaten, and repeated the same feat 39 years later under the leadership of current head coach Frank Nutall. Towards the end of the 2000s, Gor started bouncing back to fame steadily bringing back Kenyan football fans back to the pitch and regularly filling sold-out stadiums. The club returned to silverware in 2008 when it won the KFF Cup after a thirteen-year drought of any major trophies. Gor proceeded to win the Kenya DSTV Super Cup against the year's defending champs, Mathare United before the beginning of the 2009 KPL season. On October 26, 2011 Gor Mahia in typically dominant fashion trounced Sofapaka to win the 2011 edition of the FKL Cup having dispatched their archrivals AFC Leopards 6 days earlier in an October 20 Heroes Day thriller.

Ngong Racecourse

Ngong Racecourse is a racecourse in Nairobi, Kenya. It is the main and currently only thoroughbred racing venue in Kenya. It is located along the Ngong Road near the Lenana School and next to The Nairobi Business Park, beside Ngong Road Forest. It is operated by the Jockey Club of Kenya. The racecourse was opened 1954, when it replaced the old racecourse in Kariokor, near Nairobi CBD. Ngong Racecourse is nowadays the only racecourse in Kenyan although there were races in other towns, including Eldoret, Nakuru, Nanyuki and Limuru. The first horse racing event in Kenya took place in 1904 in Machakos with Somali ponies. There are on average 25 race meetings annually of which the most prominent is the annual Kenya Derby, which was first held in 1914. Races are held there on alternate Sundays. Apart from horse racing, the venue has used for cross country running competitions, and it has acted as a special stage for the Safari Rally. It has also been used for Ostrich racing.

Muthaiga Country Club

The Muthaiga Country Club is a club in Nairobi, Kenya. It is located in the suburb of Muthaiga, about 15 minutes' drive from the city centre. The Muthaiga Country Club opened on New Year's Eve in 1913, and became a gathering place for the British expat ruling élite in British East Africa, which later became, in 1920, the Colony of Kenya. One of the club's main founders was The Hon Berkeley Cole , an Anglo-Irish aristocrat from Ulster. Cole was a son of The 4th Earl of Enniskillen and was a brother of The Hon Lowry Cole . Berkeley Cole was also the brother-in-law of Hugh, Lord Delamere, effective 'founder' of the White community in Kenya. Today, the club is still frequented by the upper echelons of Kenyan society. In addition to social gatherings, the club offers accommodation. Many of its members play golf at the nearby Muthaiga Golf Club.

Kenyatta International Conference Centre

The Kenyatta International Convention Centre is a 28-story building located in Nairobi, Kenya. The KICC is located in the City Square of Nairobi, and a crucial address for a number of Government offices, including those of recently elected Senators. It is an internationally renowned venue for conferences, meetings, exhibitions and special events within walking distance of several five star hotels. During its 41-year history it has been the host of several international conferences, seminars, exhibitions and summits. The Center is ranked as one of the top places to hold conferences on the continent, a feat considering its age in comparison to shiner venues and locations throughout Africa. KICC was the tallest structure in Nairobi up until the mid 2000s when the construction of the Times Tower, the home of the Kenya Revenue Authority, was completed. The building has since then seceded its position as the tallest tower to a host of other newer projects including the UAP Old Mutual Tower, which completes construction in 2016, the KCB Pensions Tower and Hass Tower, which has just broken ground and is set to be the tallest structure on the continent.

Nyayo House

Nyayo House in a skyscraper is Nairobi, Kenya. It hosts several government departments such as immigration and also serves as the headquarters of Nairobi Province. The building is located on the corner of Uhuru Highway and Kenyatta Avenue. It is 84 metres high and has 27 floors Planning of the tower started in 1973 and it was initially set to be named as Nairobi House. Construction started in 1979, one year after Daniel arap Moi took over as the president of Kenya. Building of the house was completed in 1983. The building was planned by Ministry of Public Works Ngotho Architects and constructed by Laxmanbhai Construction. Nyayo House is particularly known for its detention facilities in its basement, often called as "Nyayo House torture chambers". Many opponents of the Moi government were beaten there by Special Branch officials (the Special Branch has later been renamed National Security Intelligence Service). Some of the known detainees at Nyayo House were George Anyona, Wahome Mutahi and Raila Odinga After the Moi era the Truth, Justice and Reconciliation Commission (TJRC) has investigated Nyayo House torture cases and several victims, including politician Koigi wa Wamwere have been compensated. Another detainee, musician Ochieng Kabaselleh died soon after he was released, allegedly due to injuries caused by torture. The former torture chambers have now been opened to the general public. Nyoyo House is also infamous for the amount for corruption by various state officials.

Rahimtulla Tower

Rahimtulla Tower, also known as the Rahimtulla Trust Building, is a tower in the Upper Hill neighbourhood of Nairobi, Kenya. The tower is a reinforced concrete structure, and clad with blue-tinted glass and white louvre tiles. The tower has twenty-two storeys, including a double floor-height lobby, plus two basement floors. It is 16 storeys smaller than the New Central Bank Tower, the tallest building in the country. The building is capped by a 30-metre high mast, for television and radio communication. The main tenants are iWay Africa, PriceWaterhouseCoopers and Dhanush InfoTech. The architect is Planning Systems Services, the structural engineers Mangat, I.B. Patel & Partners, the main contractors were Laxmanbhai Construction and the services engineers for the project were Howard Humphreys Limited.
