Top Attractions in Vaughan

Canada's Wonderland

Canadas Wonderland is a 330-acre theme park located in Vaughan, Ontario, a suburb approximately 40 kilometres north of Toronto. Opened in 1981 by the Taft Broadcasting Company and The Great-West Life Assurance Company as the first major theme park in Canada, it remains the countrys largest. The park was owned by Paramount Parks from 1994 to 2006 when it was known as Paramount Canadas Wonderland. Cedar Fair Entertainment Company purchased the park in 2006 dropping Paramount from the title. Canadas Wonderland has been the most visited seasonal amusement park in North America for several consecutive years. In 2014, it was the second most visited park in the Cedar Fair chain, behind Knotts Berry Farm, with approximately 3.5 million visitors. Canadas Wonderland is open daily from May to September, and then only on weekends through early November. The park features 16 roller coasters, tied with Cedar Point for second-most roller coasters in an amusement park behind Six Flags Magic Mountain. Wonderland also features a 20-acre water park called Splash Works, and during the fall season, a Halloween-themed event called Halloween Haunt.

The Bat

Originally themed around the Middle Ages, Medieval Faire is a section of Canada's Wonderland, a theme park in Vaughan, Ontario, Canada. As such, early attractions created under Kings Entertainment Company were named after knights, Don Quixote, Vikings, dragons, bats, and beasts. Throughout the Paramount Parks era, the section's new attractions lacked appropriate theming. The introduction of the Leviathan roller coaster to Medieval Faire in 2012 was the first major investment in the section since 2000; the park is now under ownership of Cedar Fair. The section includes four roller coasters and six other rides. Over the years, atmosphere performers have disappeared from most sections of the park, including Medieval Faire. Two entertainment areas have remained constant in the section, a proscenium theatre and a stunt and acrobatic space surrounded by water. Currently named Wonderland Theatre, the indoor facility has hosted a variety of stage show revues, ice shows, and now an acrobatic production, Cirque Ambiente. A structure within Arthur's Baye initially featured a pirate diving and acrobatics show, which has changed now to have a more generic theme; it is currently branded Kinet-X. Food in the section was originally themed to the era, with a large indoor pub and rib stand. The food later took on a more traditional North American cuisine, like a buffet and subs. Private events are held in the Courtyard facility.

Ontario Soccer Centre

The Soccer Centre, also known as the Ontario Soccer Centre, is a Canadian competition, training, education, and exposition soccer facility. It is located in Vaughan, Ontario, 20 km north-west of downtown Toronto. The centre features a 130,000-square-foot field house that can accommodate three indoor soccer fields or one full size 11-a-side game. It has two international size outdoor grass fields, one international size outdoor artificial turf field, a sports therapy clinic, a restaurant and lounge. The tenants include The Ontario Soccer Association, The Canadian Soccer Association, The Canadian Soccer Hall of Fame and Museum, and all of Ontario's Provincial Leagues. In the fall of 2003, The Soccer Centre opened up its new artificial turf outdoor field. The project was the result of a collaboration between The Ontario Soccer Association, The Canadian Soccer Association, The Soccer Centre, and The City of Vaughan. In January 2015 it was announced that the stadium would undergo a $5 million renovation by 1 July 2015, funded by the Ontario Soccer Association with the City of Vaughan acting as the guarantor. The stadium, which will initially seat 2,000 but is planned to be expanded to 3,500 and 5,000 each subsequent year, will be home to Toronto FC II, the reserve team of Toronto FC of Major League Soccer, which began play in the minor professional United Soccer League in 2015.

Kortright Centre for Conservation

Kortright Centre for Conservation, or simply Kortright Centre, is a suburban conservation area in Vaughan, Ontario, Canada in the northern part of the Greater Toronto Area. It is between Rutherford Road to the south and Major Mackenzie Drive to the north. It is located 38 km northwest of downtown Toronto, about 4 km west of Highway 400. The area in which it is located is predominantly forested in its western and northern extent. The Humber River is situated in the west and the Cold Creek and Harris Creek are to the north. The Kortright Centre, which opened in 1979, is operated by the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority. It is named after Dr. Francis Kortright, an engineer, businessman, author and dedicated conservationist. The forest consists of pine trees to the north and east, especially northeast of the main attraction and the centre and maple trees to the south, and the west. The attractions include horse riding 50 m to the east not far from the parking lots. A field which is used only for horses is to the north. Inside the main attraction, there is a shop and in the east is a small theatre showing films that discuss the endangerment of forests in the Toronto area. The access to the pathway leading to the syrup shacks is located at the west exit. The newly constructed Earth Rangers Centre is situated about 500 m south of the building and is situated in the southwest. The Centre houses Earth Rangers: a non-profit organization focused on providing environmental education to youth in the Greater Toronto Area. Construction began in the early-2000s. The Centre is between Pine Valley Drive and Kortright Centre.

Boyd Conservation Area

Boyd Conservation Area is a suburban land preserve owned and operated by the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority. It also overlaps a life science Area of Natural and Scientific Interest of the same name. It is a moderate-size park that offers facilities for numerous outdoor activities. The park is situated in the Humber River valley, in Vaughan, Ontario. Public operations run between late April and early October, and are funded in part by nominal fees to access the park. Optionally, individuals or families may acquire a membership, which provides access to a number of parks operated by the Conservation Authority. A little known fact concerning the park is that, upon its creation, it was given the unofficial motto "Natura exorno omnis nos postulo". In September and October, the park is used as the venue for cross country running events, the most prominent being the OFSAA meet which brings together the best runners in the province, a yearly event it hosted from 1960 to 1965, 1968 to 1972, 1981, 1989, and 2009. In the summer, it is a popular destination for local residents to enjoy a picnic; businesses may also reserve one of 19 well-groomed sites in the park for corporate picnics, including a few which have sheltered areas. Bocce courts, volleyball and basketball courts, soccer fields, and childrens playgrounds are found within the park for the benefit of families and youth groups. Bird watching and nature hiking are very popular. Outdoor musical concerts are also frequent in Boyd Conservation Area throughout the summer, partly due to the sheltered outdoor sites. The Boyd staff uniform consists of powder blue shirts bearing the TRCA crest, dark blue work pants, steel-toed boots and TRCA caps or cowboy hats. The Boyd Staff have consistently received very positive reviews on their service from patrons to the park. Boyd Park is affiliated with the Kortright Centre and all full-time Boyd staff take up work at Kortright over the winter season. Due to limited funding, Boyd only retains a few full-time staff. The rest of their staff is made up of summer students and those who wish to complete community service outdoors, aiding in keeping the grounds clean.

Behemoth

Behemoth is a steel roller coaster at Canadas Wonderland in Vaughan, Ontario, Canada. It is a Hypercoaster designed and developed by Swiss manufacturer, Bolliger Mabillard. Behemoth was the tallest and fastest roller coaster in Canada until 2012 when Leviathan, a roller coaster also manufactured by Bolliger Mabillard, was built at the opposite side of Canadas Wonderland, claiming these titles. Behemoth is similar to Diamondback, Goliath and Nitro . After a year and a half of preparation and development, Behemoth premiered in May 2008. With its high speeds, tall heights and rapid changes in both direction and elevation, the attraction is one of the most aggressive thrill rides in the park. Behemoth also has a high hourly passenger throughput – making it one of the most efficient rides in the park. The ride features a prototype seating arrangement to ensure an unobstructed view for every rider – a first for a roller coaster of this type. The Behemoth experience lasts for approximately three minutes and subjects the rider to a maximum speed of 124 km/h achieved in less than 3.9 seconds followed by five air-time hills, a hammerhead turn and two helixes.

Dragon Fire

Dragon Fire is a steel roller coaster located at Canadas Wonderland in Vaughan, Ontario, Canada. It was manufactured in 1980, but it was opened when the park made its debut in 1981 under the name Dragon Fyre until it was later renamed. It was one of the four original coasters at Canadas Wonderland. The ride is built at the east end of the park in the Medieval Faire section. It is located adjacent to the parking lot, so it is one of the first coasters that is seen. The coaster has a green and yellow track with purple support poles. Since the removal of Drachen Fire from Busch Gardens Williamsburg, Dragon Fire is also the only Arrow Dynamics coaster in existence to have counter-clockwise turning corkscrews. Dragon Fire was designed to operated with three trains, which is made evident by the fact that the ride has a set of safety brakes following the corkscrews and before the helix. However, due to the rides short duration, it would be very difficult for the ride staff to load a train in the station without having one train stop in the middle of the ride. Because of this, Dragon Fire never used its third train. In 1987, the third train was modified for use on The Bat. Leviathan, which was constructed for 2012 season, towers just above Dragon Fire dwarfing it by 228 feet.

Flight Deck

Flight Deck is a steel inverted roller coaster located at Canadas Wonderland in Vaughan, Ontario, Canada. It originally opened in 1995 under the name Top Gun until it was renamed in 2008 to Flight Deck, after Paramount Parks sold Wonderland to Cedar Fair which necessitated the gradual removal of all Paramount names and trademarks from the theme park. The roller coaster is based on the 1986 film Top Gun, and the ride is meant to simulate the feeling of riding in an F-14 fighter jet. The ride is themed heavily after the movie with various props alongside the line-up including models of the F-14 aircraft, hangars, radar installations, army trucks, and informational posters about the making of the movie. Since its early inception, the ride has been known as the flagship ride in the park, finally losing that distinction to Behemoth in 2008. When Vekoma announced the Vekoma SLC 689m Standard, Paramount had cancelled their plans with Bolliger Mabillard to make an inverted coaster to go on the land where Behemeth currently stands on due to Cedar Points contract on having no BM inverted coaster in the 200 mile radius of a Cedar Fair park. Canadas Wonderland clocked to 198 miles from Cedar Point, so the custom invert was cancelled and the SLC was put in place. The ride was built where "Zumba Flume" was once located. The "Top Gun" movie theme was a shift in the design of the park. The ride no longer was themed to match the "land" in which it was situated. The ride has had many breakdowns which include seats and chain lift failure. There have been a couple of accounts where the train has been stuck on the lift hill with people on the ride.

Ghoster Coaster

Ghoster Coaster, is a junior wooden coaster located at Canadas Wonderland whose name was shortened to just "Ghoster Coaster" for the 2010 season, as part of the transition to Planet Snoopy. Ghoster Coaster opened, along with the entire park, on May 23, 1981. It was one of the four original roller coasters to open with the park. The other three were Dragon Fire, the Wild Beast, and the Mighty Canadian Minebuster. All three wooden coasters were designed by Curtis D. Summers and built in-house by the Taft Broadcasting Company. Some sources claim Philadelphia Toboggan Company built these coasters, but PTC stopped building coasters in 1979. International Street

International Street is a themed area at Canadas Wonderland theme park in Vaughan, Ontario. Similar to the Main Street, U.S.A. sections of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, it acts as an entrance way to the park. The street ends at Wonder Mountain, a visual landmark for navigating through much of the park. A similar format is used in Kings Island and Kings Dominion theme parks. In each instance, the International Street section was created while the park was owned by Kings Entertainment Company, then transferred to Paramount Parks, and finally to the current owners, Cedar Fair Entertainment Company. The street features buildings with themes of alpine, Scandinavian, Latin American, and Mediterranean cultures. A long fountain stretches the full length of the street, leading to a man-made mountain that features dive shows called; Victoria Falls High Divers. An amphitheatre features regular shows with local casts and occasional guest performers. In early promotions, International Street was billed as "a feast of cultures, rich and satisfying", featuring foods not often found in theme parks, like shrimp, paella, and smoked sausage. Over the years, retail outlets have moved to more generic kinds of merchandise and well-known Canadian fast food formats.

Leviathan

Leviathan is a steel roller coaster in the Medieval Faire section of the park at Canadas Wonderland in Vaughan, Ontario, Canada. It is the first roller coaster made by Swiss manufacturer Bolliger Mabillard to exceed a height of 306 feet, putting it in a class of roller coasters commonly referred to as giga. At 5,486 feet long, 306 feet tall, and with a top speed of 92 miles per hour, Leviathan is the tallest and fastest roller coaster in Canada. As of 2015, Leviathan is ranked as the eighth-tallest, and the eighth-fastest roller coaster in the world, and the third-tallest traditional lift-style coaster in the world. It was the 16th roller coaster to be built at Canadas Wonderland, and the rides track was completed in February 2012, with the first test run being completed on 15 March 2012. The coaster opened to season pass holders on 27 April 2012, and to the general public on 6 May 2012.

Mighty Canadian Minebuster

The Mighty Canadian Minebuster is one of the four roller coasters that debuted with Canadas Wonderland, an amusement park located in Vaughan, Ontario, Canada, in 1981, and is still operational today. It is one of two wooden roller coasters at the park that are modelled after rides that existed at Coney Island amusement park in Cincinnati, Ohio; Wild Beast is the other. Minebuster was originally intended to be the centrepiece of the never-built Frontier Canada section of the park. Minebuster is an out and back roller coaster, and uses two trains, with five cars holding six riders each. The ride was designed by Curtis D. Summers and built in-house. The coaster was not built by PTC despite a plaque at the operators booth and several published reports that claim it was. PTC stopped building coasters in 1979. It is likely however, that the construction crew consisted of workers who had previously built coasters for PTC. The two 30-passenger trains were supplied by the Philadelphia Toboggan Coasters. Canadas Wonderlands water park, Splash Works, has two sets of slides that pass over the Mighty Canadian Minebuster. The coaster in recent years has been hampered with some roughness, along with being modified several times for incoming Water Park additions, where some of the four hills have been joined together making them much longer with less of a peak therefore significantly reducing the amount of negative Gs experienced.

Wonder Mountain's Guardian

Wonder Mountains Guardian is a 4D, interactive dark ride roller coaster at the Canadas Wonderland amusement park located in Vaughan, Ontario, Canada. It is also the first ride part of Cedar Fairs Amusement Dark collection. Park management first proposed a dark ride located inside Wonder Mountain around 2004. Technology and budget limitations at the time delayed the projects planning and design stages until 2011. The steel track was manufactured by Art Engineering; it is approximately 1,000 feet long and has a maximum height of about 60 feet . The ride also has one of the largest drop tracks in the world. Triotech Amusement designed the rides interactive 3D animations, which are accompanied by other special effects such as wind, adding the fourth dimension. During the parks Halloween Haunt event in October, the animations are replaced with zombie-themed effects. Delays during construction delayed the rides opening until May 24, 2014; three weeks after the 2014 season began. Guardian was inspired by the dragon in Thunder Run—another roller coaster located in the mountain area of the park—and Starlight Spectacular—a nightly light-and-sound show focused on Wonder Mountain.

Vaughan Mills

Vaughan Mills is one of the largest shopping centres in Canada located at the southeast corner of Highway 400 and Rutherford Road, in Vaughan, Ontario about 32 km north of downtown Toronto. The mall is located adjacent to Canadas Wonderland. Vaughan Mills opened on November 4, 2004, and was the first regional enclosed shopping complex in the Greater Toronto Area since the Erin Mills Town Centre opened in 1990. It has almost 1.3 million square feet of retail space. The shopping centre was designed and built by Ivanhoe Cambridge and the Mills Corporation, the latter of which owns a portfolio of malls across the United States. JPRA served as the design architect for the center, with Bregman + Hamann Architects as the project architect. Like its American counterparts, Vaughan Mills incorporates a "race track" layout to maximize the exposure of the mall tenants. The complex has over 200 retail stores, restaurants, and entertainment outlets. Fifteen anchor retailers are present, including Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World, HM, The Childrens Place, and Urban Planet. Entertainment located on the site includes Lucky Strike Lanes and the first Legoland Discovery Centre in Canada. In August 2006, the Mills Corporation sold its stake in Vaughan Mills to partner Ivanhoe Cambridge. In January 2013, plans were announced to add 150,000 square feet and 50 new stores to the mall which opened on fall of 2014. Vaughan Mills is the 15th largest mall in Canada. YRT buses connect to this mall at Vaughan Mills Terminal.

Dalziel Barn

The Dalziel Barn is an architecturally distinctive log barn built in 1809 and situated in Vaughan just north of Toronto's Black Creek Pioneer Village. Among its features, the barn had a large gable roof with a double slope on one side. Two gable roofed cupolas sat on the ridge. Although the windows and cupolas are often thought of as extraneous decorative features, they served to ventilate and provide natural lighting to the barn interior. The upper floor cantilevers out, creating an overshoot. Wheat, hay, and feed were stored in the upper floor and transported down to the bottom where cattle were housed. The overshoot meant that grazing cattle could shelter beneath during inclement weather. This particular arrangement of "barn and stable" was the most economical mode of accommodating produce and livestock of a farm. Since mixed farming and large scale cattle raising began in the 1860s, the Dalziel farmers were ahead of their time.
