Nevado del Tolima

Nevado del Tolima is a stratovolcano located in Tolima Department, Colombia, south of Nevado del Ruiz volcano. The steep-sided, glacier-clad Nevado del Tolima volcano contrasts with the broad profile of Nevado del Ruiz volcano to the north. The andesitic-dacitic younger Tolima volcano formed during the past 40,000 years, rising above and largely obscuring a 3-km-wide late-Pleistocene caldera. The summit consists of a cluster of late-Pleistocene to Holocene lava domes that were associated with thick block-lava flows on the northern and eastern flanks and extensive pyroclastic-flow deposits. The summit contains a funnel-shaped crater 200–300 m deep. This crater is quite recent and was not present in December 1926. "El Grafico" 19 February 1927 no. 819 page 714 first column at the bottom Holocene activity has included explosive eruptions ranging in size from moderate to plinian. The last major eruption took place about 3600 years ago. Lava dome growth has produced block-and-ash flows that traveled primarily to the NE and SE. Minor explosive eruptions have been recorded from Tolima in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Nevado del Ruiz

The Nevado del Ruiz , also known as La Mesa de Herveo (English: Mesa of Herveo (the nearby town)), or Kumanday in the language of the local pre-Columbian indigenous people, is a volcano located on the border of the departments of Caldas and Tolima in Colombia, about 129 kilometers west of the capital city Bogotá. It is a stratovolcano, composed of many layers of lava alternating with hardened volcanic ash and other pyroclastic rocks. Nevado del Ruiz has been active for about two million years, since the early Pleistocene or late Pliocene epoch, with three major eruptive periods. The current volcanic cone formed during the present eruptive period, which began 150 thousand years ago. The volcano usually generates Plinian eruptions, which produce swift-moving currents of hot gas and rock called pyroclastic flows. These eruptions often cause massive lahars (mud and debris flows), which pose a threat to human life and the environment. The impact of such an eruption is increased as the hot gas and lava melts the mountain's snowcap, adding large quantities of water to the flow. On November 13, 1985, a small eruption produced an enormous lahar that buried and destroyed the town of Armero in Tolima, causing an estimated 25,000 deaths. This event later became known as the Armero tragedy—the deadliest lahar in recorded history. Similar but less deadly incidents occurred in 1595 and 1845, consisting of a small explosive eruption followed by a large lahar. The volcano is part of Los Nevados National Natural Park, which also contains several other volcanoes. The summit of Nevado del Ruiz is covered by large glaciers, although these have retreated significantly since 1985 because of global warming. The volcano continues to pose a threat to the nearby towns and villages, and it is estimated that up to 500,000 people could be at risk from lahars from future eruptions.

Ibague

Ibagué is the capital of Tolima, one of the 32 departments that make up the Republic of Colombia. The city is located in the center of the country near the central mountain range of the Colombian Andes, near Nevado del Tolima. It is one of the most populated cities in the country with about 498,401 inhabitants, making it the seventh most populous in Colombia. It was founded on October 14, 1550 by the Spanish captain Andrés López de Galarza. The urban area of the city of Ibagué is divided into 13 communes and rural areas over 17 veredas. as the capital of the department of Tolima, the city hosts the Government of Tolima, the Departmental Assembly, the Attorney General's Office, and is the main epicenter of political, Economic, Administrative, Business, Art, Culture, and Tourism departments. Ibagué is one of the major economies of Colombia and is projected to be one of the largest in South America with development potential and competitive national and international business centers, industry and infrastructure. It is one of only three cities in the country chosen by the World Trade Center Association to build headquarters along with Cali, adding to the one existing in Bogotá. Its economic plan is based primarily on the industrial, tourism and agricultural sectors, with its textile industry being the third largest of Colombia. According to Doing Business from the World Bank in Washington DC, Ibagué tops the rating of the cities with greater ease of doing business and investment in the country after Manizales. The city is known as "The Musical Capital of Colombia and America", thanks to the Conservatory of Tolima (one of the most prestigious and important of Colombia), folklore festivities, and its many monuments referring to music. The city's main educational institutions are the University of Tolima, the University of Ibagué (Coruniversitaria), the Universidad Nacional Abierta y a Distancia and the Conservatory of Tolima.

Museo de Arte del Tolima

The Museo de Arte del Tolima is an art museum located in Ibagué, capital of the Tolima Department of Colombia. It features pieces of Colombian art and contemporary Latin American art. The museum was founded by the artists Dario Ortiz, Julio Cesar Cuitiva, Margareth Bonilla Morales, and others and opened its doors to the public in December 2003. It offers a significant permanent collection as well as educational program and cultural programs to its visitors. Works of the permanent collection include Epifanio Garay, Ricardo Acevedo Bernal, Jesús Rafael Soto, Carlos Cruz-Díez, Leonora Carrington, Alejandro Obregón, Fernando Botero, Édgar Negret, Julio Fajardo, Dario Ortiz, José Bedia, Ricardo Borrero Álvarez, José María Espinoza, Armando Villegas, pieces from Colombian and Latin American artists.

Nevado del Quindío

The Nevado del Quindío is an inactive volcano located in the Central Cordillera of the Andes in central Colombia. The summit marks the tripoint of the departments of Risaralda, Quindío and Tolima, and is also the highest point of the departments of Risaralda and Quindío. The mountain is one of the highest peaks in the Los Nevados National Natural Park, which is a wildlife sanctuary. There are no historical records of any eruption. The snow fields and glaciers in the mountain are decreasing in a progressive way, about ten percent annually since the first scientific measures in the late 1980s, presumably because of the global warming . The mountain offers beautiful landscapes, attracting touristic visits all the year. The lower part is a cloud forest habitat, rich in endemic species. Botanist Alexander von Humboldt visited the area in 1801, describing new species such as the frailejón.

Icononzo

Icononzo is a municipality located in the department of Tolima in Colombia. His temperature is 21 degrees, altitude 1304 m. Is regarded as the best town of Tolima, with the best panoramic view of landscapes. Background: History tells us that in 1875 there was the community of Guamitos inherited by Don Vicente Reyes Daza. During the colonial era and by the year 1888 arrived ADRIAN lords ESCOBAR, GUILLERMO QUIJANO, ALBERTO WILLIAMSON and others, who created a small community along the road leading to the population of Guamitos, distant half hour, they called the parish, and by Ordinance No. 3 July 16 of that year, as institutes of Corregimiento Icononzo. By the year 1892, Mr. Reyes Daza and Williamson began the assembly of the estates Canada and Scotland. Labor supply in the region constituted by the problem of housing shortages, resulting in problems of invasion. This situation led to the ranch owners to donate land to settle in part the problem was how we started the construction of 17 new homes, resulting in the formation of a new town, which because of their increasing wealth and development was upgraded to a municipality, by Ordinance No. 1915 of April 21, after being returned to the department of Tolima in other territories that were under the jurisdiction of Cundinamarca. It is known for a natural bridge over a very deep canyon used in the violent events of the civil turmoil known as La Violencia following the Bogotazo. The arch was painted by the Italian painter Gerolamo Fumagalli in the 19th century.
