Stadion de Goffert

The Goffertstadion , formerly known as McDOS Goffertstadion [mɑɡˈdɔs ˈɣɔfərt.staːdijɔn] for sponsorship reasons, is a football stadium in Nijmegen, Netherlands, located in the Goffertpark. It is home to football club NEC. The stadium was opened on 8 July 1939 by Prince Bernhard of The Netherlands. Since 1951 the opening of the International Four Days Marches Nijmegen, the so-called Vlaggenparade, a parade with the national flags of all participants is held in the stadium. N.E.C. are the tenants of the 12,500 capacity venue. On 19 October 1983 NEC played a UEFA Cup Winners' Cup match against FC Barcelona, still seen as the most important match ever played in the Goffertstadion. It was rebuilt into a modern stadium with all seats covered and heated and updated catering facilities. The first home-match in the new stadium took place in September 1999. The grand re-opening was on 25 January 2000. One of the many advantages the renovated stadium offers is the improved atmosphere because the spectators are now situated much closer to the playing ground. Because of this the players have a better interaction with the crowd. The playing ground and the rest of the stadium are separated from each other by a promenade which is situated under the spectators’ seats. This promenade has a double function: It prevents supporters from entering the playing ground while at the same time containing food and beverage outlets as well as toilets. A specially constructed space under the playing ground can store heat to warm up the playing ground, so that matches can still take place during winter. In November 2007 the board of NEC and the city of Nijmegen presented new plans for De Goffert. The capacity is intended to be increased to 20,000 and the stadium will be placed largely underground inside a large hill. This hill will also serve as a home for basketball , judo and other sports, creating a 'House of Topsports'. The strange, but innovative, design is needed because the city will not allow the stadium to grow in height because of the Goffert Park, which is a protected nature-site. The Nijmegen venue hosted three international matches of the Dutch national football team in the 1970s, with the last being a qualifying match for Euro 1980 on 20 September 1978 against Iceland: 3-0. The goals were scored by Ruud Krol, Ernie Brandts and Rob Rensenbrink .

Stratemakerstoren

The Stratemakerstoren is an early 16th-century bastion on the Waalkade in the Dutch town Nijmegen. It is a rijksmonument and since 1995, it housed a museum. This was closed in April 2015, for major reconstruction. The Stratemakerstoren is located on the edge of the river Waal, at the foot of the Valkhof at Nijmegen. This bastion was a part of the fortifications of Nijmegen, built in or before 1526. The current name, which means "Road Workers Tower", was already in use in 1569 the reason for this name is still not exactly known. The Stratemakerstoren was constructed to protect the adjacent gate, the Veerpoort. The tower often figures on old paintings and prints, where it is seen on the riverbank, at the foot of the Valkhof castle, for example in the painting called the Valkhof at Nijmegen. Due to technical innovations in warfare, by the end of the 18th century, the round bastion had lost its importance as a defensive stronghold. A rise in the water level of the river Waal also meant that the tower was partly submerged. In 1789, a local carpenter, J. ten Boven, was given permission to build houses on the site of the bastion. He didn't demolish the tower completely, but just built the houses on top of the bastion. In 1987 these houses were demolished, and to almost every one's surprise the tower re-emerged. From 1995 until 2015, the building was hidden behind a grey wall (to protect the porous marlstones and bricks against the weather), and housed a museum. In April 2015, the museum was closed for major reconstruction and restoration of the building. Plan is to re-open in 2016 as De Bastei, a centre for nature and cultural history.

Radboud University Medical Center

The Radboud University Medical Center (Dutch: Radboudumc), is the teaching hospital affiliated with the Radboud University Nijmegen, in the city of Nijmegen in the eastern-central part of the Netherlands. The Radboud University Medical Center was founded in 1956. It changed its name to UMC St Radboud and transformed to a complete new organization in 1999 by a merger of the Academisch Ziekenhuis Nijmegen (AZN) (Academic Hospital of Nijmegen) and the medical faculty of the Katholieke Universiteit Nijmegen (Catholic University of Nijmegen), now the Radboud University Nijmegen. Thus, it is a semi-independent medical university and hospital, which is not directly linked to the Radboud University. In 2013 the hospital changed its name to Radboudumc in Dutch and Radboud University Medical Center in English. It is one of the largest and leading hospitals of The Netherlands, providing supraregional tertiary care for residents of a large part of the eastern section of The Netherlands. The medical center has about 1,000 beds, employs about 10,000 employees, and offers educational services to about 3,000 students in the following academic courses: Medicine Biomedical Sciences Dentistry Molecular Mechanisms of Disease Cognitive Neurosciences
