Baku TV Tower

The Baku TV Tower, built in 1996, is a free standing concrete telecommunications tower in Baku, Azerbaijan. With a height of 310 metres, it is the tallest structure in Azerbaijan and the tallest reinforced concrete building in Caucasus. The tower has become one of the most prominent landmarks of Baku, often in the establishing shot of films set in the city.

Palace of the Shirvanshahs

Palace of the Shirvanshahs is the biggest monument of the Shirvan-Absheron branch of the Azerbaijan architecture, situated in the Inner City of Baku. The complex contains the main building of the palace, Divanhane, the burial-vaults, the shahs mosque with a minaret, Seyid Yahya Bakuvis mausoleum, a portal in the east Murads gate, a reservoir and the remnants of the bath-house. The palace is depicted on the obverse of the Azerbaijani 10,000 manat banknote of 1994-2006, and of the 10 new manat banknote issued since 2006.

Binagadi asphalt lake

The Binagadi asphalt lake are a cluster of tar pits located 1 km southeast from Binagadi settlement, near Hirda-Girrar hillock in urban Baku, Azerbaijan. Asphaltum or tar has seeped up from the ground in this area for tens of thousands of years. The tar is often covered with dust, leaves, or water. Over many centuries, animals that were trapped in the tar were preserved as bones. This ancient flora and fauna deposit is protected by the State as a monument of a nature of the special significance pursuant to the Decree of the Government of Azerbaijan Republic No. 167 of March 16, 1982.

Ateshgah of Baku

The Baku Ateshgah or "Fire Temple" is a castle-like religious temple in Surakhani, a suburb in Baku, Azerbaijan. Based on Persian and Indian inscriptions, temple was used as a Hindu, Sikhi and Zoroastrian place of fire worship . "Atash" is the Persian word for fire. The pentagonal complex, which has a courtyard surrounded by cells for monks and a tetrapillar-altar in the middle, was built during the 17th and 18th centuries. It was abandoned after 1883 when oil and gas plants were established in the vicinity, ending the flow of natural gas to the temple and extinguishing the holy fire. The Baku Ateshgah was a pilgrimage and philosophical centers of fire worshipers from Multan, who were involved in trade with the Caspian area via the famous "Grand Trunk Road". The four holy elements of their belief were: ateshi, badi, abi, and heki . The temple ceased to be a place of worship after 1883 with the installation of petroleum plants at Surakhany. The complex was turned into a museum in 1975. The annual number of visitors to the museum is 15,000. The Temple of Fire "Ateshgah" was nominated for List of World Heritage Sites, UNESCO in 1998 by Gulnara Mehmandarova — president of Azerbaijan Committee of ICOMOS—International Council on Monuments and Sites . It was also featured on an episode of Globe Trekker. It was declared a state historical-architectural reserve by decree of the President of Azerbaijan on 19 December 2007.

Baku Ferris Wheel

Baku Ferris Wheel, also known as the Baku Eye, is a Ferris wheel on Baku Boulevard in the Seaside National Park of Baku, capital of Azerbaijan. The wheel was built by the Dutch company Dutch Wheels. It was opened on 10 March 2014 by the Azerbaijani president Ilham Aliyev, and opened to the public two days later. The wheel is 60 metres tall and has 30 cabins, each holding eight people. It makes a complete turn in 30 to 40 minutes.

Azerbaijan Carpet Museum

Azerbaijan Carpet Museum, ), displays Azerbaijani carpets and rug items of various weaving techniques and materials from various periods. It is named after Latif Karimov and has the largest collection of Azerbaijani carpets in the world. It moved to a brand new building on the Bakus seafront park during 2014 from its former location on Neftchiler Avenue.

National Art Museum of Azerbaijan

National Art Museum of Azerbaijan is the biggest art museum of Azerbaijan. It was founded in 1936 in Baku and in 1943 was named after Rustam Mustafayev, a prominent Azerbaijani scenic designer and theater artist. The museum consists of two buildings standing next to each other. The museums total collection includes over 15,000 artworks. There are over 3,000 items in 60 rooms on permanent display. About 12,000 items are kept in storage. The museum changes the exhibits periodically so that more of these artworks can be displayed temporarily.

Nizami Museum of Azerbaijani Literature

The National museum of Azerbaijan literature named after Nizami Ganjavi was established in 1939, in Baku. It is located in the centre of the capital of Azerbaijan, not far from the Fountains Square and near the entrance of Icheri Sheher. Now this museum is one of the greatest and richest treasuries of Azerbaijani culture.

Baku Zoo

Baku zoo is a state zoological park in Baku. It is the oldest one in Azerbaijan and was opened in 1928. It belongs to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Azerbaijan and to Executive Power of Baku city. Total area of the zoo is 4.25 hectares .

Tuba Shahi Mosque

Tuba Shahi Mosque – is located in Mardakan township of Baku. It is an architectural monument of Azerbaijan and is a cultic construction, which was spread in architecture of the northern regions of Azerbaijan. The mosque was constructed in the 15th century and was named in honor of the woman who ordered its construction. An inscription confirming its construction date was carved on the mosque . There is one more inscription in the mosque, on the spiral stairs near the entry of the mosque which lead to the roof. Evidently, this inscription belongs to a more ancient mosque of the village and indicates the construction date – Muharram of the 774th year of Hijri and shows names of customers –sadr Haji Bahaaddin and his son Mahmud Abayil. The Quadrangular castle, a building of the Middle Ages, is located near the mosque.

Juma Mosque

Juma Mosque, or Friday Mosque, is a mosque in Baku, Azerbaijan. Located in the historic Icheri Sheher, the mosque has been rebuilt several times. The present Friday Mosque was built in 1899 under the financing of Baku merchant Haji Shikhlali Dadashov. There are traces of a Zoroastrian temple at the site. A minaret, constructed in 1437, adjoins Friday Mosque.

Muhammad Mosque

Muhammad Mosque in Baku is the mosque built in the 11th century in Old City, Baku. The mosque is also known as Siniggala, for the name of its minaret – Siniggala . The mosque acquired its second name in 1723, when military squadron of Russian Army, consisting of 15 warships and led by Admiral Matyushkin, approached the city from seaside and demanded its surrender during the Russo-Persian War . Russian warships began to bomb the city after the refusal to surrender. One of the Russian shells hit the minaret of Muhammad Mosque and damaged it. A stormy wind then blew the Russian ships further out to sea. The population of the city interpreted the wind as a divine scourge sent to the occupants. From that time until the middle of the 19th century, the minaret of the mosque wasn’t reconstructed. It remained a symbol of the persistence and courage of the defendants of the tower. It is the first building in Azerbaijan, which is related to Islam and dated for its architectural ligature.

National Flag Square

National Flag Square is a large city square off Neftchiler Avenue in Bayil, Baku, Azerbaijan. A flag measuring 70 by 35 metres flies on a pole 162 m high. The flagpole was confirmed as the worlds tallest by the Guinness Book of Records, but was soon overtaken by the 165 m Dushanbe Flagpole in Tajikistan. Both flagpoles were built by the same American designer, David Chambers. National Flag Square covers 60 hectares overall. The area of the upper part is 3 hectares . The square features the state symbols of Azerbaijan—the coat of arms and the anthem—and a map of the country.

Independence Museum of Azerbaijan

Independence Museum of Azerbaijan or "Istiqlal" Museum – is a museum established on 7 December 1919 in Baku the capital of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic. H.Mirzajamalov and I.M.Aghaoglu had a great role in creation of the museum. Archeological findings, exemplars of rare books, objects of numismatics, jewelry, etc. were collected in the museum. The museum was located in the building of the ADR’s Parliament . It is noted that, namely at that time, an attempt at making a legal document about organizing and storing museum items was undertaken. The museum existed only a year and couldn’t realize all intended plans. It was liquidated in 1920, when the Soviet Power was established in Baku. Materials collected in the museum became basis for "Muzexcurs" foundations and Azerbaijan State Museum. The second Independence Museum was established on 9 January 1991. Then the museum had only 7,000 exhibits. Due to attempts and investigations of the museums collective the number of exhibits is above 20,000 now. The main goal of the museum is to highlight national independence movement of Azerbaijan that lasts from ancient times till now. The exposition of the museum is exhibited in six halls: The first hall is dedicated to the history of Azerbaijan from the ancient times to the 19th century, the second hall to the history of Azerbaijan between the second half of the 19th and 20th centuries, the third hall to national independence movement in the Southern Azerbaijan in the first half of the 20th century, the fourth hall to the history of Azerbaijan during repression and the Great Patriotic War, the fifth hall to national independence movement of Azerbaijan at the end of the 20th century and Karabakh War, and the sixth hall to the history of Independent Republic of Azerbaijan and activity of the national leader Heydar Aliyev. There are masterpieces of art and architecture, maps, pictures, books, currencies and other exhibits in the Independence Museum of Azerbaijan. A lot of expositions and activities dedicated to historical events are held in the exposition of the museum.

Alexander Nevsky Cathedral

The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral was the main Russian Orthodox cathedral in Baku, Azerbaijan from when it was completed in 1898 until its destruction in 1937 during the Soviet era under Joseph Stalin. The cathedral was the biggest Russian Orthodox structure ever built in the South Caucasus.

Gobustan National Park

Gobustan National Park officially Gobustan Rock Art Cultural Landscape is a hill and mountain site occupying the southeast end of the Greater Caucasus mountain ridge in Azerbaijan, mainly in the basin of Jeyrankechmaz River, between the rivers Pirsagat and Sumgait. It is located west of the settlement of Gobustan, about 40 miles southwest of the centre of Baku on the west bank of the Caspian Sea. The territory of Gobustan is cut up with numerous, sometimes rather deep ravines . That is a suggested origin of the Gobustan geographical name. In 1966 Gobustan was declared a national historical landmark of Azerbaijan in an attempt to preserve the ancient carvings, relics, mud volcanoes and gas-stones in the region. The mountains Boyukdash, Kichikdash, Jingirdag, and the Yazili hill were taken under legal government protection. These mountains are located near the Caspian Sea, in the southeast part of Gobustan. In 2007 Gobustan was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site considered to be of "outstanding universal value" for the quality and density of its rock art engravings, for the substantial evidence the collection of rock art images presents for hunting, fauna, flora and lifestyles in pre-historic times and for the cultural continuity between prehistoric and medieval times that the site reflects.

Maiden Tower

The Maiden Tower, also known locally as Giz Galasi, located in the Old City, Baku, in Azerbaijan, was built in the 12th century as part of the walled city. Together with the Shirvanshahs Palace, dated to the 15th century, it forms an ensemble of historic monuments inscribed in 2001 under the UNESCO World Heritage List of Historical Monuments as cultural property, Category III. It is one of Azerbaijans most distinctive national emblems, and is thus featured on Azeri currency notes and official letterheads. The Maiden Tower houses a museum, which presents the story of historic evolution of the Baku city. It also has a gift shop. The view from the roof takes in the alleys and minarets of the Old City, the Baku Boulevard, the De Gaulle house and a wide vista of the Baku Bay. In recent years, the brazier on the top has been lit during the nights of the Novruz festival. Consequent to the receding of the sea shore line of the Caspian Sea, a strip of land emerged. This land was developed between the 9th and 15th centuries, when the walls of the old city, the palace including the huge bastion of the Maiden Tower were built.

Buta Palace

The Buta Palace is one of the principal performing arts centers and music venues of Baku. It consists of two event halls and adjacent parking lot for 800 cars. The greater hall is a caravanserai-stylized venue, capable of accommodating about 2,000 visitors. The minor hall is designed for conferences and presentations and can house 400 visitors. The size of the greater hall is 1,572 square metres and the minor hall — 652 square metres .

Heydar Aliyev Palace

Heydar Aliyev Palace and during the Soviet era known as Lenin Palace is the main music venue of Baku, Azerbaijan, seating 2158 people. The palace was renamed after the death of Azerbaijani President Heydar Aliyev in 2003. Alish Lemberanskiy was the designer and main visioner of the palace. The venue reopened in November 2008 after extensive renovation. It was considered as possible location for Eurovision Song Contest 2012, which will be hosted by Azerbaijan- but the venue was later confirmed as the Baku Crystal Hall, a brand new arena and concert facility, built in 2012.

Ismailiyya Palace

The Ismailiyya Palace is a historical building that currently serves as the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan. It is located on Istiglaliyyat Street in Baku. The palace was constructed for the Muslim Charity Society by Józef Plośko at the expense of the millionaire Musa Naghiyev in commemoration of his deceased son Ismayil, and was named Ismailiyya after him. Construction began in 1908 and ended in 1913. The building was constructed in the Venetian Gothic style. The following sentences were carved with golden letters on the front and side facades of the building to indicate that this building was intended for the Muslim Charity Society: “Human rises with work, and only with the help of work he can achieve his goal. “ “Work created the human.” “A person should strive for knowledge from birth to death.” “Muslims, your century dies with you. Prepare your descendants for the future.” “Strive for knowledge, in spite of the length of the way.” After the opening ceremony, conferences of Muslim Charity Society members, meetings of Muslim women and Baku intelligentsia, and congresses of clergy were held in the building's white stone assembly hall. The hall's windows open onto Nikolayevskaya street. During the March Days in 1918 the building suffered damage from fire and warfare. In 1923, under the guidance of the architect Dubov, the building was reconstructed and the sentences on the front and side facades were removed. After the reconstruction of “Ismailiyya”, it was occupied by various organizations and agencies: “Society of Inspection and Study of Azerbaijan”, “Archeological Commission”, “Society of Turkish Culture”, “Fund of Manuscripts”, Republican branch of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR and others. At present, the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences is located there.

Mosque of the Martyrs

The Mosque of the Martyrs, also popularly known as the Turkish Mosque, is a mosque in Baku, Azerbaijan, near the Martyrs Lane. The mosque was built in the beginning of the 1990s with assistance of the Turkish government. The mosque currently is used as an official residence of religious attaché of the Turkish embassy. The mosque has been under construction since 2009. The 154th ayah from Al-Baqara chapter of Quran is written on the façade of the mosque in Arabic and Turkish: “Do not say “Dead!” about those, who died for the sake of Allah. No, they are alive! But you do not feel.”

National Museum of History of Azerbaijan

National Museum of History of Azerbaijan is the largest museum of Azerbaijan, located in Baku, in the former mansion of Azerbaijani oil magnate and philanthropist Haji Zeynalabdin Taghiyev. It was founded in 1920.

Green Theatre

The Green Theatre is an open-air theatre in Baku, the capital city of Azerbaijan. The theatre seats 2500 spectators. The theatre was built in the mid-1960s on the initiative of the citys major of the time Alish Lambaranski. The Green Theatre was built as a venue intended for important cultural events. In 1993, the theatre ceased functioning. In August 2005, Ilham Aliyev, the President of Azerbaijan ordered to carry out repairs works in the theatre. Speaking at the opening ceremony, Ilham Aliyev said: On July 25, 2007, Hajibala Abutalybov, the current mayor of Baku, signed a decree on the creation of the Green Theatre Concert Complex of Baku.

Lake Boyukshor

Boyukshor, also spelled separately Boyuk Shor is the second largest lake of Azerbaijan and largest on Absheron Peninsula. It is located in the center of the Absheron peninsula, on the boundaries of Binagadi, Sabunchu and Narimanov raions of the city of Baku.

Absheron National Park

Absheron National Park — is a national park of Azerbaijan and was established on 8 February 2005 by the decree of the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, on an area of 783 hectares in the administrative territory of the Azizbeyov district of Baku city, on the base of Absheron State Nature Preserve. It was set up by Order 622 of the President of Azerbaijan.

Gulustan Palace

Gulustan Palace, formerly known as Gulustan Wedding Palace Complex during the Soviet era is the main state convention center of the Azerbaijani government. It is located on Bakus highland, on Istiglaliyyat Street overlooking the whole city of Baku and Baku Bay. The palace serves as an official facility for governmental and non-governmental organizations holding various types of formal events. It is notable for having hosted such important events as the Contract of the Century and other significant oil and gas contracts, signing of TRACECA project, the wedding of Leyla Aliyeva, the daughter of the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, international and state conferences, etc. The palace was built with the initiative of the Chief City Architect in the 1970s, Alish Lambaranski and designed by H. Amirkhanov, N. Hajibeyov, T. Sharinski, F. Rustamova, N. İsmayilov, K. Kerimov and Abbas Alasgarov. It was opened in 1980 and renovated in 1998.

Nardaran Fortress

Nardaran Fortress was built in 1301, by architect Mahmud ibn Saad in the northern part of Absheron Peninsula. An inscription on Nardaran fortress, which was translated by A.A.Alasgarzade, says: But the geographical location of Nardaran Fortress indicates that there couldn’t be a foremost defense. Similar fortresses were built there, from where it was expected to be attacked. Such regions were in the western borders and seashores of Absheron. But Nardaran Fortress was too far from the western borders of Absheron and also its seashores.

Haji Gayib’s bathhouse

Haji Gayib’s bathhouse – is an ancient fortress construction near a coastal side of Icheri Sheher. Haji Gayib’s bathhouse is located in Baku quarter of Icheri Sheher, opposite the Maiden Tower. History of the bathhouse is dated back to the 15th century. Intake portal of the bathhouse is rectangular shaped. Whole complex of the bathhouse is divided into 3 groups: dressing-room, changing room and a bathing area. The dressing and changing rooms have octagonal halls, surrounded by small rooms. Vaults and domes have various figured outlines and were implemented thoroughly. There is a pool with warm and cold water in the centre of the hall. Floors are covered with stone plates. Heating is promoted by ceramic pipes or channels under the floors of the rooms. Warm air, produced by water heating circulates along these channels.

Bibi-Heybat Mosque

The Bibi-Heybat Mosque is a historical mosque in Baku, Azerbaijan. The existing structure, built in the 1990s, is a recreation of the mosque with the same name built in the 13th century by Shirvanshah Farrukhzad II Ibn Ahsitan II, which was completely destroyed by the Bolsheviks in 1936. The Bibi-Heybat Mosque includes the tomb of Ukeyma Khanum, and today is the spiritual center for the Muslims of the region and one of the major monuments of Islamic architecture in Azerbaijan. It is locally known as "the mosque of Fatima", which is what Alexandre Dumas called it when he described the mosque during his visit in the 1840s.
