Down Royal Racecourse

History Racing has been taking place on the current course, at Maze near Lisburn, since, the early 18th Century on land donated by Arthur Hill, 1st Marquess of Downshire, but the history of Down Royal goes further back to 1685 when King James II issued a Royal Charter and formed the Down Royal Corporation of Horse Breeders. In 1750 King George II donated £100 to run King’s Plate and to the present day a race named Her Majestys Plate is run in July over 1 mile 5 furlongs with the prize money contributed to by the Privy Purse. Down Royal is a horse racing venue near Lisburn in Northern Ireland. The most valuable race run there is the JNwine.com Champion Chase, run at the Northern Ireland Festival of racing in November. The most valuable flat race to be run there annually is the Ulster Derby. Although actually in the United Kingdom, racing at Down Royal comes under the authority of Horse Racing Ireland as horse-racing in the British Isles is divided on a Great Britain / All-Ireland basis.

Lagan Valley Island

Lagan Valley Island is a conference and events centre located on a small Island in Lisburn City in Northern Ireland. The building was opened for business in March 2001 and was officially opened in November 2001 by Her Majesty the Queen. Lagan Valley Island has many functions; It is headquarters of Lisburn City Council and the facility is also a unique mix of civic, business and arts facilities home to Lisburn City Council headoffice, the Island Arts Centre, Council Chambers, a purpose built Conference Centre and Theatre, stunning wedding facilities and Lighters Restaurant. The site on which Lagan Valley Island was built once played a significant role in Lisburns industrial past. Previously the site for the Island Mill Spinning Company, famous for the production on linen through it, production at the Mill came to an end in 1983. When this happened, Lisburn City Council purchased the site and with funding assistance from the National Lottery to the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, regeneration of this site began.

New Grosvenor Stadium

New Grosvenor Stadium is a multi-purpose stadium in Ballyskeagh, County Down, Northern Ireland. It is currently used for football matches and greyhound racing, the latter under the operating name Drumbo Park. The stadium currently has a total capacity of 8,000 of which 790 can be seated, however this is split to a capacity for Football matches of 7,000 {540 seated} and a capacity for Greyhound Racing of 1,000 {250 seated}. The stadium was built originally as a trotting venue in the village of Ballyskeagh on the outskirts of Lisburn and was acquired by Distillery Football Club and converted into a football ground in 1980. The club named the venue New Grosvenor Park after their previous home in Belfast, which had been damaged by a fire bomb attack in 1971 and then demolished to make way for the building of a motorway link through the city in 1972. The stadium was modified in the mid-1980s to accommodate Greyhound Racing under the operating name of Ballyskeagh Greyhound Track, rebranded as Drumbo Park in 2009, and continues to be a duel venue accommodating both Soccer and Greyhound Racing as independent bodies. The Stadium contains four distinct structures, two on the east side of the ground and two on the west, three of which are operated by Lisburn Distillery, the club having added Lisburn to their name in 1999, and a fourth operated solely by Drumbo Park. The two companies do not allow the shared use of their spectator facilities, meaning that the Drumbo Park stand is closed during football matches, which are advertised as taking place at New Grosvenor Park while the Morton McKnight Stand, Social Club and Visiting covered terrace are all closed during Greyhound Racing meets, which are advertised as taking place at Drumbo Park. It used to host 1 Irish Cup Semi Final every year until the Greyhound Association took the franchise of the ground of Lisburn Distillery.

Lisnagarvey transmitting station

The Lisnagarvey transmitting station is a facility for mediumwave broadcasting located in the townland of Magherageery, on the southern edge of Lisburn, Northern Ireland . It is close to Sprucefield shopping centre and about one mile from the middle of Lisburn. The station was built by the BBC for the Regional Programme to be transmitted to Northern Ireland and it went into service in 1936. It is now owned by Arqiva. During World War II, a 100 kW shortwave transmitter was installed at the station as an alternative to the well-known one at Daventry, England, in case that one should suffer from an enemy attack. It transmitted on 6140 or 6145 kHz, and used the call sign GRW. The shortwave transmitter was taken out of service on 26 May 1946 and was later redeployed at the BBC Far Eastern Relay station at Tebrau, Malaya in January 1951. The station includes three radio masts, including two standard lattice masts and one Blaw-Knox diamond cantilever vertical radiator. The two standard lattice masts have a wire slung T-antenna suspended between them. The Blaw-Knox radiator is the only one of its kind in Western Europe. The height of a vertical radiator is related to the frequency of the service transmitted, and for maximum efficiency should be one half of the station's wavelength. Its height was originally 144.8 metres , but it was shortened when the station's broadcast frequency was changed. Similar masts in Europe can be found nowadays only at Lakihegy, Hungary, at Riga, Latvia, at Vakarel, Bulgaria and at Stara Zagora, Bulgaria.
