Top Attractions in Flevoland

Sonoy

Sonoy was former a restaurant located in Emmeloord, in the Netherlands. It was awarded one Michelin star in the period 2010-2013. Owner and head chef of Sonoy was Paul van Staveren. The restaurant was a member of Alliance Gastronomique Néerlandaise since 2006. Restaurant Sonoy was located in a former water tower, at a height of 40 meters. It occupied four floors. During the transfer from the old restaurant in Blokzijl to this, that took five weeks, the staff was working in De Librije in Zwolle. In 2010, the restaurant won the "Sustainable Restaurant of the Year"-award from Gault Millau. The Michelin star awarded in 2010, was the first one ever awarded in the province Flevoland. In March 2013 the municipality Noordoostpolder, owner of the water tower in which the restaurant is housed, was reviewing the future of the said tower. A failed renovation caused too many problems. The restaurant closed per 1 July 2013. Paul van Staveren got a compensation of about € 275,000, but still lost about half the original investment in the restaurant in 2010 based on a ten-year tenancy contract.

Houtribdijk

The Houtribdijk is a dike in the Netherlands, built between 1963 and 1975 as part of the Zuiderzee Works, which connects the cities of Lelystad and Enkhuizen. On the west side of the dike is the Markermeer and on the east is the IJsselmeer. The 27-kilometer-long dike was intended for the Markerwaard, but this polder is now unlikely to be constructed. Although called a dike, the Houtribdijk is actually a dam. Parts of the dike are known as the Markerwaarddijk and the Lelydijk. It is also frequently called the "Enkhuizen–Lelystad dike" in traffic announcements, as if it had no official name. The road that runs on the dike is the N302 and is used by 8,500 vehicles per day with a speed limit of 100 km/h. Marine traffic can cross the dike at either the locks or the naviduct at Enkhuizen. Alternatively, there is a lock system at Lelystad. About halfway along the dike there is Trintelhaven, an emergency harbor. Trintelhaven is also the site of a restaurant and an AM broadcasting station, which operates on 1395 kHz with 20 kW. It uses as antenna a 54-meters-tall free-standing grounded-lattice steel mast, which was built in 1999. The mast carries a wire antenna, which runs up the tower and is fixed to a horizontal cross on the top of the tower.

Markermeer

The Markermeer is a 700 km2 lake in the central Netherlands in between North Holland, Flevoland and its larger sibling, the IJsselmeer. A shallow lake at some 3 to 5 m in depth, it is named after the small former island, now peninsula, of Marken that lies within it. The southwest side of the lake that begins where the IJ once emptied into the Zuiderzee is known as the IJmeer. The Markermeer was not originally intended to remain a lake. It used to be part of the Zuiderzee, a saltwater inlet of the North Sea, that was dammed off by the Afsluitdijk in 1932, turning the Zuiderzee into the freshwater IJsselmeer. The following years saw the reclamation of extensive tracts of land as large polders in an enormous project known as the Zuiderzee Works . One of these, the Markerwaard, was to occupy the area of the current Markermeer. Part of the construction of this last polder was building the Houtribdijk, also called Markerwaarddijk, finished in 1976, which hydrologically splits the IJsselmeer in two, the southern section being the Markermeer. Because of changing priorities and doubts about the financial feasibility, the Markerwaard was indefinitely postponed in the 1980s and the Markermeer has since begun to become a valuable ecological and recreational asset of its own. The Markermeer is used as a freshwater reservoir and a buffer against floodwaters and droughts. In 2003 the Netherlands was hit by drought, and several minor dikes were endangered. Water from the Markermeer was used to keep the area surrounding Amsterdam wet, thereby keeping the dikes safe. A recent project, the Marker Wadden aims to create a few islands in the north of the lake.

Ketelmeer

The Ketelmeer 52.596792°N 5.762329°E / 52.596792; 5.762329, is the tongue of the IJsselmeer into which the River IJssel drains, it is situated between the polders Noordoostpolder and Oostelijk Flevoland, and connects the river IJssel to the Ijsselmeer lake. It is one of the bordering lakes, a continuous body of water which separate Flevoland from the Noordostpolder and the ancient lands of the provinces of Gelderland Utrecht. The Ketelmeer covers an area of 3500 hectares, most of which is in the province of Flevoland, but the river delta of the IJssel is in Overijssel province. It was carved out from the Zuiderzee by the construction of the polders of Noordoostpolder and Flevoland, between which it lies. It is via Ketelmeer that the IJsselmeer connects to the Zwarte Meer and the Veluwemeer, the strip of water which separates Flevoland from the coast of the mainland. The Ketelmeer contains the IJsseloog 52.59889°N 5.742781°E / 52.59889; 5.742781, a kilometre-diameter circular pit in an artificial island, built to contain the toxic sludge dredged from the bed of the Ketelmeer The Ketelbrug is a bascule bridge over the Ketelmeer connecting the Noordoostpolder and Oostelijk Flevoland.

IJsseloog

The IJsseloog is an artificial island in the Ketelmeer used as a depository to store polluted silt. Most of the polluted silt was deposited in the Ketelmeer by the IJssel river between 1950 and 1990. Removal of silt soil from the Ketelmeer lake also aims to deepen the channel leading to the mouth of the IJssel (to at least a depth of 3.5m), thus aiming to improve access to the river for navigation. During construction of the IJsseloog, a major concern was to preserve the water table and the environment of Ketelmeer. The polluted silt is to be stored permanently and without any risk of leakage. For now, cleaning the silt is not yet feasible. To avoid nuisance to agriculture, to local residents, and to prevent groundwater contamination, the silt depository was built in the centre of the lake and not on the coast. IJsseloog is also a target for recreational and ecological development. Two other artificial islands were created: Hanzeplaat and Schokkerbank. The construction of IJsseloog started in 1996 and was completed in 1999. The deposit can hold 20 million cubic metres of silt. In this capacity, 15 million cubic metres are intended for the deposit of silt from the Ketelmeer, and the remaining 5 million cubic metres will be used to deposit silt from elsewhere. The amount of waste that is stored on the island amounts to 23 million m³. The water level in the IJsseloog is maintained at 4m below sea level to prevent pollution runoff. A port was built on the outer edge of the IJsseloog for delivery of silt. Once the depot is full, remediation will be done by decantation. Clean silt will be used to construct new ecological zone, the IJsselmonding. The clean sludge that is released will be used for the construction of a natural IJssel estuary. A treatment plant began operating in 2000. Its processing station separates sand and peat from contaminants. Purified sand will be used for construction, and the remaining sludge is pumped to storage. When storage is full, the layers of clay and sand will be sealed, and the island itself will be used for recreational purposes. After that process, Nature will take over in the IJsseloog.

A Campingflight to Lowlands Paradise, mostly just known as Lowlands, is an annual three-day music and performing arts festival, held in the Netherlands in August since 1993. Although the main focus is on music - rock, pop, dance, hip hop and alternative - Lowlands also offers indoor and outdoor cinema, theatre, cabaret and stand-up, ballet, literature and comic strips. Lowlands is attended by around 55,000 visitors, spread over 200 acts and more than ten stages every year which are named according to the NATO phonetic alphabet apart from the Grolsch stage (named after the beer brewer Grolsch who has been the main sponsor of the festival for the last few years). The majority of stages are inside huge tents - insurance against the Netherlands climate - with the main stage's tent, Alpha, being approximately the size of a regulation football pitch. The festival is held 68 kilometres (42 mi) east of Amsterdam in Biddinghuizen, Flevoland province; at Spijk en Bremerberg, which is adjacent to the Walibi Holland amusement park.

Schokland

Schokland is a former island in the Dutch Zuiderzee, in the municipality of Noordoostpolder. Schokland was an elongated strip of peat land which ceased to be an island when the Noordoostpolder was reclaimed from the sea in 1942. It is now just a slightly elevated part of the polder, with a still partly intact retaining wall of the waterfront of Middelbuurt. On 1 April 2014, it had 8 inhabitants, but according to Statistics Netherlands there are five people living on the former island. Schokland was an attractive settlement area in the Middle Ages, but by the 19th century it was under continuous threat of flooding due to the rise in sea level. By then the Schoklanders had retreated to the three most elevated parts: Emmeloord, Molenbuurt, and Middelbuurt. A major flood in 1825 brought massive destruction, and in 1859 the government decided to end permanent settlement on Schokland. The former municipality of Schokland was joined to Kampen on the mainland. Today Schokland is a popular archeological site and host to the Schokland Museum. Schokland was the first UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Netherlands.

Mediumwave transmitter Flevoland

The mediumwave transmitter Flevoland (Middengolf Zendstation Flevoland) is a broadcasting facility for medium wave near Zeewolde in the province of Flevoland, Netherlands, situated at 5°25′ E and 52°23′ N. It has been used for broadcasting on 747 kHz (until September 2015) and 1008 kHz with a nominal power of 400 kilowatts. As aerial two guyed steel framework masts with a height of 195 metres are used, which form an anti-fading aerial. These masts are grounded and carry a cage aerial, which is upperward the separation insulator, separating the masts in a height of 95 metres in two parts, connected toward the mast construction. The radiation diagram is directional, with a maximum gain of 4 dB in South-Eastern direction, to compensate for the variation in electrical admittance of terrain in the Netherlands. The station, which came into service in 1980, initially carried the programmes of Hilversum 1 and Hilversum 2. In 1985, following an overhaul of the Dutch public radio service, the frequencies were reassigned to NPO Radio 1 and NPO Radio 5 for 747 kHz and 1008 kHz respectively. In 2003, the 1008 kHz frequency was auctioned by the Dutch Government while NPO Radio 5 remained on 747 kHz. Since then, the 1008 kHz has been used by Radio 10 Gold (from 2004 to 2007) and Groot Nieuws Radio, a Dutch privately owned religious station. In September 2014, NPO announced that distribution of NPO Radio 5 on Medium wave would be discontinued as of September 2015. On 1 September 2015 at 00:02 CEST, the 747 kHz transmitter closed down, marking the end of Medium wave transmissions by the Dutch Public Broadcasters. The 1008 kHz is expected to remain in use until at least September 2017 by Groot Nieuws Radio, though at reduced power of 100 kW.
