Odense

Odense is the third largest city in Denmark. It has a population of 173,814 as of January 2015, and is the main city of the island of Funen. By road, Odense is located 45 kilometres north of Svendborg, 144 kilometres to the south of Aarhus and 167 kilometres to the southwest of Copenhagen. The city is the seat of Odense Municipality, with a population of 173,814 , and was the seat of Odense County until 1970, and Funen County from 1970 until 1 January 2007, when Funen County became part of the Region of Southern Denmark. Odense has close associations with Hans Christian Andersen who is remembered above all for his fairy tales. He was born in the city in 1805 and spent his childhood years there. There has been human settlement in the Odense area for over 4,000 years, although the name was not mentioned in writing until 988, and by 1070, it had already grown into a thriving city. Canute IV of Denmark, generally considered to be the last Viking king, was murdered by unruly peasants in Odense's St Alban's Priory on 10 July 1086. Although the city was burned in 1249 following a royal rivalry, it quickly recovered and flourished as a centre of commerce in the Middle Ages. After a period of decline, large-scale plans for development were made during the 18th century, which led to the rebuilding of Odense Palace and the building of a canal to the Port of Odense, facilitating trade. In 1865, one of the largest railway terminals in Denmark was built, further increasing the population and commerce, and by 1900, Odense had reached a population of 35,000. Odense's Odinstårnet was the second tallest tower in Europe when built in 1935 but was destroyed by the Nazis during World War II. The University of Southern Denmark was established in 1966. In the present day, Odense remains the commercial hub of Funen, and has a notable shopping district with a diversity of stores. Several major industries are located in the city including the Albani Brewery and GASA, Denmark's major dealer in vegetables, fruits and flowers. The city is home to Odense Palace, erected by King Frederick IV who died there in 1730, the Odense Theatre, the Odense Symphony Orchestra, and the Hans Christian Andersen Museum, situated in the house that was the birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen. In sports, Odense has a number of football clubs including OB, BM, B1909, and B1913, the Odense Bulldogs professional ice hockey team, and the city also hosts the H.C. Andersen Marathon. Odense is served by Hans Christian Andersen Airport and Odense station, which lies on the line between Copenhagen and the Jutland peninsula.

Esbjerg

Esbjerg is a seaport town and seat of Esbjerg Municipality on the west coast of the Jutland peninsula in southwest Denmark. By road, it is 71 kilometres west of Kolding and 164 kilometres southwest of Aarhus. With a population of 71,618 , it is the fifth-largest city in Denmark, and the largest in west Jutland. Before a decision was made to establish a harbour at Esbjerg in 1868, the area consisted of only a few farms. Esbjerg developed quickly with the population rising to 13,000 by 1901 and 70,000 by 1970. In addition to its fishing and shipping activities, it also became an important centre for agricultural exports. Over the years, many of the city's visitors have arrived by ferry from Harwich, Essex, England, but this service closed in September 2014 having run since 1875. The harbour facilities are being expanded to answer the needs of the wind-turbine industry and container shipping traffic. Esbjerg is served by Esbjerg Airport with flights to Aberdeen, Scotland and Stavanger, Norway. The town has several notable museums and entertainment venues, including Esbjerg Art Museum, Esbjerg Museum and the privately owned Fisheries and Maritime Museum. The Esbjerg Performing Arts Centre was completed in 1997 to designs by Jan and Jørn Utzon. When approached by sea, the Man Meets the Sea is one of the prominent monuments, consisting of four 9-metre-tall white-coloured men, overlooking Sædding Beach. The sculpture was designed by Svend Wiig Hansen and installed in 1995. It hosts branches of the University of Southern Denmark and Aalborg University, Esbjerg is increasingly recognized for its university facilities and sporting activities. It is home to the Danish football club Esbjerg fB, who play their home matches at Blue Water Arena, and also has an ice hockey division called Esbjerg Elite Ishockey, which plays at the Granly Hockey Arena.

Nordborg

Nordborg , is a town with a population of 6,191 and a former municipality in Sønderborg Municipality, Region of Southern Denmark on the northwest half of the island of Als off the east coast of the Jutland peninsula in south Denmark. The former Nordborg municipality covered an area of 125 km², and had a total population of 13,956 . Its last mayor was Jan Prokopek Jensen, a member of the Social Democrats political party. The former Nordborg municipality was created in 1970 as the result of a kommunalreform that merged a number of existing parishes: Egen Parish Havnbjerg Parish Nordborg Parish Oksbøl Parish Svenstrup Parish. The town has been greatly influenced by the presence of Danfoss, a global producer of components for refrigeration and airconditioning, heating and motion control applications, headquartered in the town and founded in 1933. The presence of Danfoss has made the Nordborg municipality, over the years, the site of one of the largest industrial workplaces in Denmark. In later years, the municipality saw the rise of another major industrial company, Linak, a global producer of electric linear actuator systems. Albeit much smaller than Danfoss (Linak global employment of approx. 1600 people compared to Danfoss 23,000 "Facts in Brief Danfoss". ), Linak is still a large local employer. Within the town is Nordborg Castle, a historic castle whose premises are currently used as a boarding school. On January 1, 2007 Nordborg municipality ceased to exist as the result of Kommunalreformen ("The Municipality Reform" of 2007). It was merged with Augustenborg, Broager, Gråsten, Sundeved, Sydals, and Sønderborg municipalities to form the new Sønderborg municipality. This created a municipality with an area of 499 km² and a total population of 49,886 .

Padborg

Padborg is a Danish border town with a population of 4,455 located on the border with Germany. It is the location where both the E45 motorway, a railway and the historic Danish Army Road, hærvejen, cross the border. Located a few kilometres northwest of Schleswig's historic commercial centre, Flensburg, Padborg was a small settlement when the region returned to Danish rule in 1920 following a plebiscite, but grew rapidly in size after the establishment of the current border. It is a transport centre and railway town. When the border was established in 1920, the originally planned border line was moved c. 200 metres south of Padborg in order to allow construction of the railway station and a customs office. Padborg is well known in Denmark for its motorsport ring, Padborg Park, and the head offices of the large discount chain Fleggaard. Padborg has a broad based transport industry with most of the largest European transport companies having local offices. Padborg is located in Aabenraa municipality. Until December 31, 2006, it belonged to Bov municipality.

Givskud Zoo

Givskud Zoo is a zoo and safari park in Givskud, 20 kilometres north west of Vejle in Denmark. The park opened in 1969 under the name of "Løveparken" with lions as the only animals. In 1970 Asian elephants arrived and today the park has more than 700 animals representing more than 70 species. The zoo is one of only ten attractions to be awarded 5 stars by the Danish tourist guide Jyllands Attraktioner and receives about 325,000 visitors a year. It covers a total of 120 hectares, including 65 hectares currently in use for the zoo and safaripark. It is planned that the remaining area will be part of the future zoo, with first phase opening in 2019 under the name Zootopia. Givskud Zoo has been home to several famous animals, among them the white rhino Brutalis, who arrived in 1990 and was very aggressive towards stable equipment, other rhinos and humans . As a final solution, he was shipped to the private game reserve Ongava in Namibia in 1994. He lived in the reserve for 6 years before he died in a territorial battle with another male rhino. His story was covered in detail by the general media, as well as a childrens book. Another famous animal from the park is the silverback Samson, a western lowland gorilla, who has appeared several times on Danish TV. Samson and the other gorillas live in a 20,000 m2 exhibit, which opened in 2000. Givskud Zoo is best known for its large enclosures, which the guests can drive through in their own cars. Some of the most well known and popular animals in the zoo are Asian elephants, white rhinos, gorillas, and lions. As of March 2012, the large pride included a total of 45 lions.

Odense Zoo

Odense Zoo is a zoological garden in Odense, Denmark. At the time of its opening in 1930, the zoo had two apes, a peacock, a deer, a mule, magpies, and guinea pigs. Today, the zoo has animals from all over the world, approx. 2,000 different animals, covering 147 species such as chimpanzee, monkeys, ring-tailed lemur, Siberian tiger, Grévys zebra, giraffe, red panda, West Indian manatee, ostrich, penguins, pink-backed pelican, greater flamingo, macaws and Aldabra giant tortoise. In 2001, Odense Zoo inaugurated a DKK 60 million "Oceanium" featuring South American animal life, ranging from the Amazon Rainforest to Antarctica. In 2008, Odense Zoo was Funens most popular tourist attraction and number 9 in Denmark, and in 2013 it received the "Best in Europe" award in its category . The visitor record was set in the first year of the "Oceanium" when the zoo received 439,533 visitors.
