Long Man of Wilmington

The Long Man of Wilmington is a hill figure located near Wilmington, East Sussex, England, on the steep slopes of Windover Hill. It is 6 miles northwest of Eastbourne and 1/3 mile south of the village of Wilmington. It was formerly often known as the Wilmington Giant, or locally as the Green Man. The Long Man is 235 feet tall, holds two "staves", and is designed to look in proportion when viewed from below. Formerly thought to originate in the Iron Age or even the neolithic period, more recent archaeological work has shown that the figure may have been cut in the Early Modern era – the 16th or 17th century AD. From afar the design appears to have been carved from the underlying chalk; however, the modern figure is actually formed from white-painted breeze blocks. The Long Man is one of two main extant human hill figures in England; the other is the Cerne Abbas Giant, north of Dorchester. Both are Scheduled Ancient Monuments. Two other hill figures that include humans are the Osmington White Horse and the Fovant regimental badges. The Long Man is one of two hill figures in East Sussex, the other being the Litlington White Horse.

Heathfield Park

Heathfield Park is an English country house and walled park in the village of Old Heathfield in East Sussex. It is privately owned. Originally called Bayley Park, the mansion was begun by James Plummer in 1677 and continued by Raymond Blackmore in the early eighteenth century. It was altered and enlarged in 1766 by Robert Taylor for General George Augustus Eliott, who owned the house until his death in 1790. It was renamed Heathfield Park after him in 1791 by his successor Francis Newbery, son of the publisher John Newbery; Newbery hired Humphrey Repton to landscape the park. From 1819 to 1890, Heathfield Park was the seat of the baronets of the Blunt family. In 1895 it was remodeled in Georgian Revival style, brick facing being substituted for stucco, and the south-east wing being added, by Sir Reginald Blomfield for the art patron William Cleverley Alexander. Alexander, who owned Aubrey House in London, died when he fell down the basement stairs of the house in 1916. Heathfiel House is a Grade II* listed building. In one corner of the park stands the Gibraltar Tower, built by Newbery to commemorate Lord Heathfield’s successful defence of Gibraltar from 1779 to 1782. The ground floor is octagonal and the upper part round, accessed by an internal circular staicase. It is also a Grade II* listed building.

Park Corner Heath

Park Corner Heath is a 3.5 hectares nature reserve in East Sussex, England. It is situated about 1.2 miles south of East Hoathly, adjacent to the A22 main road between Uckfield and Eastbourne. The reserve is part of Vert Wood, which was once a woodland and heath noted for its rich wildlife. The reserve is a biological Site of Special Scientific Interest, first notified in 1953 under the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act 1949 and re-notified in 1988 under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. It was originally established to protect the Lewes Wave Moth Scopula immorata, now extinct. The reserve consists of grassy heath, woodland and scrub lying on sand over Weald Clay. Large parts of the woodland were planted with conifers in the latter part of the 20th century. As well as the main area of heathy grassland and a pond, it contains broad-leaved woodland of oak, birch and hornbeam, much managed as coppice. The reserve is the remnant of the more extensive heathland of Vert Wood. The reserve supports an outstanding assemblage of moths and a varied butterfly fauna including several nationally scare species. Notable butterflies that may be seen are the Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary, Silver-washed Fritillary, Grizzled Skipper and White Admiral. Notable moths include the Broad-bordered Bee Hawk-moth, Eyed Hawk-moth, Elephant Hawk-moth, Pine Hawk-moth and Cream-spot Tiger. The two areas of woodland in the reserve are Lower Vert Wood and Upper Vert Wood. The former is a bluebell wood and the latter has a well-maintained bracken-covered heath at its centre, as well as a large pond. Next to this expanse of water is a small hut owned by Butterfly Conservation, an organisation that saved several local species from extinction at the hands of Victorian butterfly collectors. A book inside the hut is open for people to document what species they have seen. The heath is vital for several reptile species if one is quiet one can see or hear adders slithering about or common lizards basking in the sun. In mammal terms, a family of red foxes has an earth and fallow deer can even be seen from a car as they dart across the road cutting through the trees. The nests of dormice in hibernation are dotted about the place in winter, and grey squirrels live in the trees. There are a lot of woodpigeons. Buzzards fly over the heath preying on the many songbirds that sing in the hedgerows and over the heath and leaving their distinctive messy grey pellets.

Weir Wood Reservoir

Weir Wood Reservoir is a 1.5-mile long stretch of water, situated close to Forest Row, East Sussex, England, on the north-western margins of Ashdown Forest. It has a full water capacity of 5,566,000 cubic metres, covering a site of 280 acres . The reservoir was built over the period 1951-54, a process which involved damming the valley of the River Medway. A daily average of 3.08 million imperial gallons is extracted. The reservoir is owned by Southern Water and supplies part of Crawley, and other parts of Mid-Sussex. The western end of the reservoir is a protected nature reserve and bird sanctuary designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. One of the main users of the reservoir is the Weir Wood Sailing Club, which is a RYA recognised training establishment, with sailing all year round. The reservoir is also a popular coarse fishing area, with day and seasonal passes available. Weir Wood Reservoir lies due south of Greenwich and hence straddles the Prime Meridian. The line passes through Botley Wood which is just to the northwest of the dam at the east end of the reservoir.

Sheffield Park cricket ground

Sheffield Park is a cricket ground at the Sheffield Park estate, located near Uckfield, East Sussex, England. From 1881 to 1896 it was the home ground of Lord Sheffield's XI, organised by Henry Holroyd, 3rd Earl of Sheffield, who in 1891 donated £150 to the New South Wales Cricket Association which was used to purchase a plate and establish the competition known as the Sheffield Shield. Cricket had been played at the ground for the previous 30 years before 1881, but these matches were unrecorded. The first recorded match on the ground was in 1881, when Lord Sheffield's XI played Alfred Shaw's XI, which was also the first first-class match on the ground. From 1881 to 1896, Lord Sheffield's XI played 9 first-class matches, the last of which came against the touring Australians. During this match, 25,000 people were allowed to watch the match for free; Lord Shffield never charged for people to come and watch matches at the ground. Lord Sheffield had an octagonal pavilion constructed during 1881-1882, and later a separate ladies pavilion was built. Following Lord Sheffield's death in 1909, with him cricket largely died out at the estate. During World War I the ground was requisitioned for farming, wiping out the cricket ground. Subsequently trees were planted on the site but most were blown down in the 1987 hurricane. In 2009, a new square was laid, a pavilion was built and the outfield was restored in its parkland setting. The reopening of the ground was celebrated with a match between an Old England XI and a Lord Sheffield Australian XI. Today, the restored ground is the home of the Armadillo Cricket Club.

Aspidistra

Aspidistra was a British mediumwave radio transmitter used for black propaganda and military deception purposes against Nazi Germany during World War II. At one time, it was the most powerful broadcast transmitter in the world. Its name after the popular foliage houseplant was inspired by the comic song The Biggest Aspidistra in the World, best known as sung by Gracie Fields. The transmitter was installed in 1942 at a purpose-built site near Crowborough in southeast England. This was equipped with other mediumwave and shortwave transmitters, which also used the Aspidistra name, being known as ASPI 2, ASPI 3, ASPI 4, etc. However, when the name Aspidistra was used on its own it always referred to the original mediumwave transmitter . After the war, Aspidistra and other transmitters at Crowborough were used for BBC External Service broadcasts to Europe. The station closed in 1982.
