Almaty

Almaty , formerly known as Alma-Ata and Vernɨy , is the largest city in Kazakhstan. Despite losing its status as the capital to Astana in 1997, Almaty remains the major commercial and cultural centre of Kazakhstan, as well as its biggest population center. The city is located in the mountainous area of southern Kazakhstan.

Qapshagay

Kapchagay is a city in Almaty Region of Kazakhstan. It is located on the Ili River, and has been built along with the construction of Kapchagay Dam on that river in the 1960s. The dam has formed Kapchagay Reservoir , a popular weekend destination for beach-goers from Almaty. Population: 39,855 ; 33,428 .

Almaty Tower

The Almaty Television Tower, or simply Almaty Tower, is a 371.5-metre-high steel television tower built between 1975 and 1983 in Almaty, Kazakhstan. The tower is located on high slopes of Kok Tobe mountain south-east of downtown Almaty. Unlike other similar TV towers, it is not a concrete, but a steel tubular structure. It is the tallest free-standing tubular steel structure in the world. The tower is 371.5 m tall; its 114 m metal aerial reaches 1000 meters above sea level. It has two observation decks at the height of 146 m and 252 m, which are accessible by two high-speed elevators. It is however not open to the public. The tower was built by the architects Terziev, Savchenko, Akimov and Ostroumov. Since Almaty is particularly vulnerable to earthquakes, the TV tower was designed to withstand earthquakes up to a strength of 10 on the Richter scale.

Lake Balkhash

Lake Balkhash is one of the largest lakes in Asia and 13th largest continental lake in the world. It is located in southeastern Kazakhstan, in Central Asia, and belongs to an endorheic basin shared by Kazakhstan and China, with a small part in Kyrgyzstan. The basin drains into the lake via seven rivers. The major one is the Ili River, which brings the majority of the riparian inflow; others, such as the Karatal, provide both surface and subsurface flow. The Ili is fed from precipitation from the mountains of Chinas Xinjiang region. The lake currently covers 16,400 km2, but, like the Aral Sea, it is shrinking because of the diversion of water from the rivers that feed it. The lake is divided by a strait into two distinct parts. The western part is fresh water, while the eastern half is saline. The eastern part is on average 1.7 times deeper than the western part. The largest city in the lake area is also named Balkhash and has about 66,000 inhabitants. Major industrial activities in the area are mining, ore processing and fishing. While the size of the lake is temporarily growing, there is concern about the lakes shallowing due to desertification and industrial activity.

Tamgaly

Tamgaly is a petroglyph site in the Semirechye, Kazakhstan. Tamgaly is located 120 km to northwest of Almaty, and takes about two and a half hours as the side road to Tamgaly is in poor condition . The site is open to visitors, and the guards can assist you to head in the right direction along a gravel path. The main petroglyphs can be reached in about 15 minutes from the car park. The majority of the 5000 petroglyphs are in the main canyon, but there are a number in the many side canyons. The petroglyphs are mostly Bronze Age, but in some cases from the Iron Age and the Medieval. The name Tamgaly in Kazakh and other Turkic languages means "painted or marked place". Tamgaly became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004.

Lake Alakol

Alakol Lake is a lake located in the Almaty and Shyghyz provinces, east central Kazakhstan. Its elevation is 347 m above sea level. The lake is the northwest extension of the region known as the Dzhungarian Gate, a narrow valley connects the southern uplands of Kazakhstan with arid northwest China. The Dzhungarian Gate is a fault-bounded valley where the elevation of the valley floor is between 350 and 450 m above sea level and the peaks of the Dzhungarsky Alatau range reach 4,463 m above sea level. Two well-defined alluvial fans are visible where mountain streams cut through the faulted landscape to the southwest of the lake. The surface area of the lake is 2,650 km2 . It is 54 m deep at its maximum depth, with a volume of 58.6 km3. A swampy lowland connects the northwest end of Lake Alakol with the Kosharkol and Sasykkol . From the southern tip of Lake Alakol a narrow swampy valley connects it to the freshwater Lake Zhalanashkol . Alakol Lake, a salt lake, has a drainage basin of 65,200 km2 and receives water periodically from several streams flowing from the Tarbagatai Mountains. Among them are the southerly draining Urdzhar River at the north end of the lake, and the Emil River, on the lakes north-eastern shore. During seasonal floods, surplus water drains from Lake Zhalanashkol to Lake Alakol along the 10-km long slough called Zhaman-Otkel . The Alakol State Sanctuary has been created to protect the area for the lake is an important breeding and nesting ground for various wetland birds, notably the very rare relict gull. Piski Island has flocks of flamingo, and 40 species of other birds. The largest island in Alakol Lake is Ulkun-Aral-Tyube. It is located in the center of the lake. Agricultural activity in this arid region is limited to areas where adequate moisture is available, mainly along ephemeral streambeds and in the deltas and alluvial fans. The Bronze Age Alakul culture is situated in the general region of the lake. In the middle of the 1st century BCE the Lake Alakol marked an eastern end of the Kangar state, shown on Chinese maps of the Western territory.

Medeu

The Medeu, or Medeo , is an outdoor speed skating and bandy rink. It is located in a mountain valley on the south-eastern outskirts of Almaty, Kazakhstan. Medeu sits 1,691 metres above sea level, making it the highest skating rink in the world. It has 10.5 thousand square meters of ice and utilizes a sophisticated freezing and watering system to ensure the quality of the ice. The mountain valley was named in honor of Medeo, a wanderer who lived in the last century and established own aul in this picturesque. site. Construction of the stadium began in the fall of 1949, and the first competition took place at the stadium on 4 February 1951. Medeu switched to its current system of artificial ice in 1972 by a team of Soviet engineers. The Medeu Dam, built in the late 1960s, stands immediately south of the skating rink, protecting it and the city of Almaty itself from potentially devastating mud flows. Viewpoints on top of the dam provide great views of the stadium. The dam has 3 successive altitude levels. Special water reservoir allows holding about 6 million cubic meters of water. Stairs known to city inhabitants and tourists consisting of 842 steps leads to the dam. Contests on ascension along this unique stairs are regularly carried out. Medeu has seen many world records in all the speed skating distances from 1951 until the 1980s: 500 m, 1000 m, 1500 m, 3000 m, 5000 m, and the 10000 m. In 1972, the rink made a very successful transition from natural ice rink to artificial ice rink. The bandy team Dynamo Alma-Ata played its homegames at Medeu and won the Soviet Championships in 1977 and 1990 and the European Cup in 1978. After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, the costs to uphold the arena as a top ice rink proved too expensive for the independent Republic of Kazakhstan. The last great championship event for a long time on this ice rink was held in 1988—the Men's World Speed Skating Championship—which was won by the American skater Eric Flaim. In the early years of the 2000s, Medeo's future status as a competition rink was uncertain. However, it was proposed as the speed skating venue both for Almaty's unsuccessful bid for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games and the successful one for the 2011 Asian Winter Games. In the end, bandy was the only sport here during the Games. Speed skating was held at Alau Ice Palace in Astana. Medeo was the main arena of the 2012 Bandy World Championship. Several years in succession the ice skating rink turned into the large concert ground where the popular international music festival “Voice of Asia” was carried out in which not only Kazakhstan performers but also variety stars from all over the world take part.

Kok Tobe

Kok-Tobe is a mountain which is the highest point of Almaty, Kazakhstan's largest city. There is a popular recreation area on top of the mountain. The mountain's height is 1100 meters above sea level. Kok-tobe is one of the main landmarks in the city, and it is popular among visitors and tourists to Almaty. The Kok-Tobe recreational area has a variety of amusement park type attractions and restaurants. It is connected to downtown Almaty by a cable car line. The City Terminal is located near Hotel Kazakhstan. Also, there is a 372 meters tall TV Tower at the foot of the mountain. The tower can be seen from most parts of the city.

Pik Talgar

Pik Talgar is a northern peak in the Tian Shan mountain range in Kazakhstan, named after Talgar river and city. It is the highest peak of the Trans-Ili Alatau. Due to its close proximity to the former capital of Kazakhstan, Almaty, it is a popular mountaineering destination. Sources differ on Pik Talgar's elevation, but the 4,979 m height is widely quoted.

Cathedral of the Ascension of the Lord

The Ascension Cathedral , also known as Zenkov Cathedral, is a Russian Orthodox cathedral located in Panfilov Park in Almaty, Kazakhstan. Completed in 1907, it is claimed to be the second tallest wooden building in the world, but the church of Sapânta and the monasteries of Bârsana and Peri, all in Maramures, Romania, are now all higher.

Charyn Canyon

Sharyn Canyon (also known as Charyn Canyon) is a canyon on the Sharyn River in Kazakhstan, 200 kilometres (120 mi) east of Almaty, close to the Chinese border. The canyon is 80 or 90 kilometres (50 or 56 mi) in length. It is within the Sharyn River valley and is part of the Sharyn National Park, which was established on 23 February 2004, and is located within the territory of the Uygur District, Raiymbek District and Enbekshikazakh District of the Almaty Province. Over several millennia of weathering action, the canyon has gained colorful formations of varying shapes and sizes. Though it is much smaller than the Grand Canyon, it has been described as being equally impressive. One part of the canyon is known as Valley of Castles (Dolina Zamkov) for its unusual rock formations, and its length is 3 kilometres (1.9 mi) with a depth of 100 metres (330 ft).

Altyn-Emel National Park

Altyn-Emel National Park is a national park in Kazakhstan. It was created in 1996. The park covers about 4600 square kilometers between the Ili River and the Ak-Tau mountain range, near Lake Kapchagai, and consists mostly of desert and rocky terrain. The park contains the singing sand, a large dune which is famous for the noises it produces.

Burl's Creek Event Grounds

Burl's Creek Event Grounds is a concert venue in Oro-Medonte, near Barrie, Ontario, Canada. It most notably holds Wayhome Music Festival in July, and the Boots and Hearts Music Festival in August each summer. It is located on the south side of Highway 11 on Oro-Medonte's 8th Line, between Barrie and Orillia. Established in 1994 by Don Hanney, a local business man, as a event grounds to host small country events such as: agricultural fairs, farmers’ markets and Highland games. Burl's Creek has also hosted events like the Barrie Auto Flea Market. In October 2014 Burl's Creek Event Grounds was sold to Dunford, as well as many other adjacent lots totaling 560-acres. Dunford began to develop the land to make way for a much larger event park. Large outdoor music festivals in the area were held at Molson's Park from1987 until that site was sold for commercial development in 2005.

Ascension Cathedral

The Ascension Cathedral, also known as Zenkov Cathedral，is a Russian Orthodox cathedral located in Panfilov Park in Almaty, Kazakhstan. Completed in 1907, it is the second tallest wooden building in the world.

Ile-Alatau National Park

Ile-Alatau National Park is a national park in Kazakhstan. It was created in 1996 and covers about 200,000 ha. It is situated in the mountains south of Almaty between Gorge Turgen in the east and Chemlogan River in the west. The National Park borders Almaty Nature Reserve, which is located around Pik Talgar. The landscape includes woodlands, alpine meadows, glaciers and lakes. Remarkable trees include apricot, maple, and apple. A total of 300 species of birds and animals have been recorded from the Ile-Alatau National Park. The park is home to snow leopards, Central-Asian lynx, Tian-Shan brown bears, Central Asian stone martens, Siberian ibexes, bearded vultures and golden eagles. Other notable bird species found in Ile-Alatau National Park include Himalayan snowcock, ibisbill, Eurasian scops owl, and Eurasian three-toed woodpecker. The park also protects specific species of deer whose antlers are believed to have medicinal properties.

Central State Museum of Kazakhstan

The Central State Museum of Kazakhstan is the largest museum in Almaty, Kazakhstan, and one of the largest museums in Central Asia. When first established in 1931, the museum was located in the Almaty Cathedral. It moved to a modern facility in 1985 and is a landmark in Almaty. The museum houses the most significant collection of Kazakh historical, archaeological, and modern cultural and political artifacts.

Sharyn Canyon

Sharyn Canyon is an 80 km canyon in Kazakhstan on the Sharyn River, 200 kilometres east of Almaty, close to the Chinese border. It is part of the Sharyn National Park, which was established 23 February 2004 and located within the territory of the Uyghur and Kegen Districts of Almaty Province. It stretches 154 kilometres along the Sharyn River in the northern Tien Shan mountain range. In parts, it attains a depth of 150 to 300 metres . One part of it is known as Valley of Castles for its unusual rock formations. The width of it ranges from 20 to 80 metres and the length is 2 kilometres .

Abay Opera House

Abay Opera House was built in Almaty in 1934 and named after Kazakh poet, composer, and philosopher Abay Qunanbayuli. Founder and first director Yevgeny Brusilovsky, who created eight national operas and a ballet . Over forty western and Kazakh pieces are performed, including operas, ballets and classical music performances. Another famous opera staged in the Abay Opera House "Abay", music by Akhmed Zhubanov and Latif Khamidi, libretto by Mukhtar Auezov. The last renovation of the building was completed in 2000.

Shymbulak

Shymbulak, also known as Chimbulak is a ski resort near Almaty, the largest city of Kazakhstan. It is located in the upper part of the Medeu Valley in the Zaiilisky Alatau mountain range, at the elevation of 2,200 metres above sea level. The resort area is about 25 kilometres south of Almaty city by the Medeo road. It is popular for its mild climate, large quantity of sunny days and great amount of snow through the winter . Almaty hosted the 2011 Asian Winter Games, bid for 2014 Winter Olympics, considered a bid for 2018 Winter Olympics, but decided to bid for 2022 Winter Olympics instead; Shymbulak was a venue for the Alpine Skiing events, and would have been for the latter.

Lake Kaindy

Lake Kaindy, meaning the "falling rocks/landslide lake"-- is a 400-meter-long lake in Kazakhstan that reaches depths near 30 meters in some areas. It is located 129 kilometers east-southeast of the city of Almaty and is 2,000 meters above sea level. The lake was created as the result of an enormous limestone landslide, triggered by the 1911 Kebin earthquake. The track to Lake Kaindy has many scenic views to the Saty Gorge, the Chilik Valley, and the Kaindy Gorge. Dried-out trunks of submerged Picea schrenkiana trees rise above the surface.

Kapchagay Reservoir

Kapchagay Reservoir, also spelled Qapshaghay Bogeni Reservoir and sometimes referred to as Lake Kapchagay, is a major reservoir in Almaty Region in southeastern Kazakhstan, approximately 60 kilometres north of Almaty. The 140 kilometre long lake is formed by a dam on the Ili River which flows from the mountains in the east towards Lake Balkhash to the northwest. It is named after the town of Kapchagay, which is located on its western bank. During the summer months the lake attracts a number of tourists from Almaty, who frequent its beachy shores on the weekends.

Dzungarian Gate

The Dzungarian Gate is a geographically and historically significant mountain pass between China and Central Asia. It has been described as the "one and only gateway in the mountain-wall which stretches from Manchuria to Afghanistan, over a distance of three thousand miles." Given its association with details in a story related by Herodotus, it has been linked to the location of legendary Hyperborea. The Dzungarian Gate is a straight valley which penetrates the Dzungarian Alatau mountain range along the border between Kazakhstan and the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. It currently serves as a railway corridor between China and the west. Historically, it has been noted as a convenient pass suitable for riders on horseback between the western Eurasian steppe and lands further east, and for its fierce and almost constant winds. In his Histories, Herodotus relates travelers' reports of a land in the northeast where griffins guard gold and where the North Wind issues from a mountain cave. Given the parallels between Herodotus' story and modern reports, scholars such as Carl Ruck, J.D.P. Bolton and Ildikó Lehtinen have speculated on a connection between the Dzungarian Gate and the home of Boreas, the North Wind of Greek mythology. With legend describing the people who live on the other side of this home of the North Wind as a peaceful civilized people who eat grain and live by the sea, the Hyperboreans have been identified by some as the Chinese.

Sunkar International Ski Jumping Complex

The Sunkar International Ski Jumping Complex is ski jumping center in Almaty, Kazakhstan. It's located in micro district of Gorny Gigant in the southern part of the city at an altitude of 900 metres above sea level in a unique place where there is almost no wind.

The A. Kasteyev State Museum of Arts is the largest art museum in Kazakhstan, located in Almaty. The museum opened on 16 September 1976, based on the collections of the Shevchenko Kazakh State Gallery and the Republic Museum of Decorative and Applied Art . In 1984, the museum was renamed to honour the Kazakh artist Abilkhan Kasteev . The museum has a collection of over 23,000 works, including historic and contemporary Kazakhstan art, works from the Soviet era, Russian artworks, Western European art, and art from East Asia .

The Lake Issyk also known as Issyk Lake is a lake in Kazakhstan fed by the Issyk River. It should not be confused with the Issyk-Kul Lake in neighboring Kyrgyzstan. The lake is mostly famous for the way it was created, destroyed, and re-created .

Soldatskoe Valley Cross Country Skiing and Biathlon Stadium, also known as "Alatau" Cross Country Skiing and Biathlon Stadium is a cross-country skiing and biathlon venue located at the Soldatskoye Valley in the Talgar District of Almaty Region, Kazakhstan. Situated around 30 kilometers from the town center and at 1,460 meters above mean sea level, it has one stadium area, both for cross-country and for biathlon. The venue was built for the 2011 Asian Winter Games and is homologated by International Ski Federation

Hotel Kazakhstan

Hotel Kazakhstan is the second tallest building in the city of Almaty, Kazakhstan. It is 102 m tall, with 26 floors. It is situated in the southern center of Almaty. It is located on Dostyk Avenue, a major road in the east part of the city which runs all the way from Medeo to Panfilov Park, in the north part of town. The building was erected in 1970. It is constructed to stand an earthquake that measures 9.0 on the Richter scale. It is a famous landmark all over Almaty, and serves as a symbol of the city. It is also the eighth tallest building in all Kazakhstan.

Kyzyl-Agash Dam

The Kyzyl-Agash Dam failure occurred in a dam located outside the village of Kyzyl-Agash, Almaty Province, Kazakhstan. On 11 March 2010, the dam burst, flooding the village. At least 43 people were killed, 211 people were injured, and over 1000 evacuated from the village. Opposition sources report a much higher figure for the death toll. An opposition newspaper Svoboda Slova reports that at least 200 have died, mostly children and old people, but an exact, official count is prohibited by the administration.
