Caerleon

The city of Chester was also historically called Caerleon. For the champion racehorse, see Caerleon II Caerleon is a suburban village and community, situated on the River Usk in the northern outskirts of the city of Newport, Wales. Caerleon is a site of archaeological importance, being the site of a notable Roman legionary fortress, Isca Augusta, and an Iron Age hill fort. The Wales National Roman Legion Museum and Roman Baths Museum are in Caerleon close to the remains of Isca Augusta. The town also has strong literary associations, as Geoffrey of Monmouth makes Caerleon one of the most important cities in Britain in his Historia Regum Britanniæ, and Alfred Lord Tennyson wrote Idylls of the King while staying there.

Isca Augusta

Isca, variously specified as Isca Augusta or Isca Silurum, was a Roman legionary fortress and settlement, the remains of which lie beneath parts of the present-day suburban village of Caerleon to the north of the city of Newport in South Wales.

Rogerstone

Rogerstone is a village, ward and community of the city of Newport, southeastern Wales. The area is governed by the Newport City Council. Historically the village was in Monmouthshire up to 1974 and latterly Gwent until 1996. The parish lies at the gateway to the Sirhowy valley, to the north of Newport on the eastern side of the Ebbw River. It is bounded by the M4 motorway to the south, the Ebbw River to the west, the Henllys vale to the east and the city boundary with Caerphilly county borough to the north. Rogerstone railway station is on the Ebbw Valley Railway. It opened on 6 February 2008 and links Ebbw Vale to Cardiff Central via Rogerstone. The Re-opening of the link from Rogerstone to Newport railway station is planned for the future.

Pencoed Castle

Pencoed Castle is a ruined Tudor mansion, largely dating from the 16th century, in the parish of Llanmartin, now within the city of Newport, south Wales. It is located about 0.5 miles east of Llanmartin village, and 0.5 miles south-east of Llandevaud, at the end of a farm lane.

Riverfront Arts Centre

The Riverfront is the principal and newest theatre and arts centre in the City of Newport. It is located on the west bank of the River Usk on the Bristol Packet Wharf in the city centre. Designed by architect Austin-Smith:Lord, the centre was opened on 23 October 2004.

Tredegar House

Tredegar House is a 17th-century Charles II-era country house mansion in Coedkernew, at the western edge of the city of Newport, Wales. For over five hundred years was home to the Morgan family, later Lords Tredegar; one of the most powerful and influential families in the area. Described as "The grandest and most exuberant country house" in Monmouthshire and one of the "outstanding houses of the Restoration period in the whole of Britain", the mansion stands in a reduced landscaped garden of 90 acres forming the non-residential part of Tredegar Park. The property became a Grade I listed building on 3 March 1952 and has been under the care of the National Trust since March 2012.

Newport Cathedral

Newport Cathedral in the city of Newport in South East Wales is the cathedral of the Diocese of Monmouth, in the Church in Wales, and seat of the Bishop of Monmouth. Its full title is Newport Cathedral of St. Woolos, King Confessor.

Fourteen Locks

Fourteen Locks is a series of locks, also known as the Cefn Flight, on the Crumlin arm of the Monmouthshire Canal at Rogerstone in Newport, South Wales. The flight of locks was completed in 1799 and raises the water level 160 ft in just 800 yd . This is one of the steepest rises for a major run in the UK which, combined with the sheer number of locks, makes it one of the most significant in the country. The run of locks includes a series of embanked ponds, pounds, sluices and weirs to control the water supply, with no set of gates shared between individual locks. It therefore comprises a flight of locks rather than a lock staircase.

Newport Ship

The Newport Ship is a fifteenth-century sailing vessel discovered by archaeologists in June 2002 in the city of Newport, South Wales. It was found on the west bank of the River Usk, which runs through the city centre, during the building of the Riverfront Arts Centre; from which process it sustained some damage. It is also known as Newport Medieval Ship. The ship was originally around 80 feet long, making it quite capable of continental voyages. Although there were no initial plans to preserve the ship in its entirety, local people campaigned eagerly to ensure this. Initial estimates suggested that preservation would cost about £3.5 million and this sum was eventually found by the Welsh Assembly Government and Newport City Council. All of the ships timbers have subsequently been raised and transferred to a dedicated industrial unit which the local council describes as "now the biggest wood conservation centre in the UK", where preservation and research continue. Due to its size, it has not been possible to display the ship in the basement of the new arts centre, as was originally proposed. Artefacts found in the ship suggest that it was trading with Portugal in the fifteenth century. The abundance of artefacts linked with Portugal argues even that the ship was also built there. Dendrochronology has given a likely felling date of 1465 and 1466 for some of the timbers used in both its construction and its repair. Remnants of a cradle found beneath the ship suggested that it had been berthed for repair but then abandoned.

Newport City footbridge

Not to be confused with City Bridge, Newport Newport City footbridge is a pedestrian/cycle bridge over the River Usk in the city of Newport, South Wales. The bridge links the east bank of the river in the vicinity of Rodney Parade stadium to University Plaza on the west bank. It was the first major public project in Newport Unlimiteds plans to regenerate the city. The bridge won a design award from the British Construction and Steelworkers Association; the George Gibby Award 2007 by the Institution of Civil Engineers in Wales; the regeneration award by The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors in Wales as well as a highly commended by Wales Business Insider for the best regeneration project of 2007.

Mansion House

The Mansion House was the official residence of the Mayor of Newport, South Wales until 2009. In addition to being the Mayors official residence, it also offered hospitality and accommodation to official visitors to the city from overseas. In 2010 plans were approved to convert the Mansion House for use as a Register office and it duly opened in July 2011 after a major refurbishment.

It consists of two adjoining hotels, a country inn, luxury lodges, two spas, 6 restaurants, three championship golf courses, two golf and country clubs, high ropes courses, adventure golf, laser tag, archery and a multi-purpose conference centre. It was the venue for the 2010 Ryder Cup, the first to be held in Wales, and hosted the 2014 NATO summit.

Wales National Velodrome

The Wales National Velodrome in Newport, South Wales, is an indoor arena located in the Newport International Sports Village, Liswerry. The Velodromes facilities including a covered 250-metre Siberian pine track, a function room/dance studio, free weights room, fitness suite, a drug-testing room and a multipurpose indoor sports arena. It has seating for 500 spectators. The Newport Velodrome hosts the Head Office of Welsh Cycling and Newport Velo Youth Cycling Club is based at the centre. An outdoor cycle speedway track is located at the Velodrome. The Velodrome was used by the British track cycling team for its pre-event holding camps ahead of the 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics.

Newport Centre

The Newport Centre is a leisure centre in Newport, Wales. The Newport Centre is located in Newport city centre on the west bank of the River Usk adjacent to the Kingsway Shopping Centre. It holds events such as concerts, conferences and exhibitions. The centre hosts the Welsh Open snooker tournament as well as international business conferences and exhibitions. The Centre also has suites overlooking the leisure pool and elsewhere; The Riverside Suite, Castle Room, Kingsway Suite, Usk Room, Treetops Suite, and the Emlyn Rooms. On Thursday April 6, it played host to week 7 of the 2006 Premier League Darts.

Newport International Sports Village

Newport International Sports Village is a multi-sport complex located at Liswerry in the South East of the city of Newport, South Wales. It is known locally as Spytty Park, the name coming from the original Spytty Fields on which it is built. The complex includes a football development centre, athletics/football stadium, velodrome and attached cycle speedway track, tennis centre, swimming pool and cricket pitches. The Tennis Centre is a multi sport facility. The Velodrome was used by the Great Britain track cycling team as their exclusive base for their final preparations for the 2012 Summer Olympics. It had previously been used by the team for the 2004 and 2008 Summer Olympics.

Newport City Live Arena

Newport City Live Arena is a large Grade II listed ex-cinema building in the city of Newport, Wales. It is located in Clarence Place on the east side of Newport city centre near Newport Bridge. The building is one of the few true examples of Art deco architecture in Newport. It was opened in March 1938 as an Odeon cinema, designed by Harry Weedon. The cinema closed in 1981, fell derelict in the following years and was facing the possibility of demolition. It was listed Grade II listed in 1999. After many years of the ground floor being used as snooker hall, the building was bought by a local Business owning couple in 2003 and it was transformed at a cost of over £1 million to features include a huge television screen to show live sporting events and a stage that has hosted several famous music acts. It was sold, redeveloped and opened in February 2016 as a vintage movie venue and named NEON (Newport Entertains Our Nation). The name is a play on the original Odeon name (Oscar Deutsch Entertains Our Nation).

Rodney Parade

Rodney Parade is a stadium in the city of Newport, South Wales. It is operated by Rodney Parade Limited, a company wholly owned by Newport Rugby Football Club. It is located on the east bank of the River Usk in Newport city centre. The ground is on Rodney Road, a short walk from the city's central bus and railway stations via Newport Bridge or Newport City footbridge. There is no spectator car park at the ground but a number of multi-storey car parks are nearby. Rodney Parade is the home ground of rugby union clubs Newport RFC and the Newport Gwent Dragons regional team. It is also the home ground of Newport County football club, and is the second-oldest sports venue in the Football League, after Deepdale. However, stadium capacity is reduced for football matches. Newport Squash Club has four courts at Rodney Parade.

Dragon Park

Dragon Park is the Wales National Football Development Centre in the city of Newport, South Wales. The centre is located at the Newport International Sports Village, Liswerry in the east of Newport near Newport Stadium and the Wales National Velodrome. It was officially opened 20 April 2013 by Michel Platini, President of UEFA. The £5M complex was a joint venture between UEFA, the Football Association of Wales, Sport Wales and Newport City Council. The Centre is intended to develop the Wales under-21, Wales women's and younger age-group squads. The centre includes two grass pitches and one artificial turf pitch. The centre also provides headquarters for the Welsh Football Trust, the game's development body, with analysis suites, sports science laboratories and coach education facilities.

Inmos microprocessor factory

The Inmos microprocessor factory, also known as the Inmos factory, is a building in Newport, Wales, UK which was originally built as a microprocessor fabrication plant for Inmos and is now occupied by International Rectifier. The architects of the award-winning high-tech building were the Richard Rogers Partnership. Construction began in 1980 and was completed by 1982. The factory was the first building to be designed by Richard Rogers in Wales. Later, he would design the Senedd building in Cardiff, which is the debating chamber for the National Assembly for Wales.

The former Newport Odeon is a large Grade II listed building in the city of Newport, Wales. It is located in Clarence Place on the east side of Newport city centre near Newport Bridge. Stable Block

The Stable Block at Tredegar House forms part of the complex of buildings at Tredegar House, at Coedkernew, on the western edge of the city of Newport, Wales. The Stables were built by Thomas Morgan, son of William Morgan , who had rebuilt the main house as a "grand(.), classical house" between 1664 and 1672. Newman describes the stables as "match(ing) the house in scale and splendor" and the Stable Block, and attached orangery, were listed Grade I on 3 January 1963. and have been in the care of the National Trust since March 2012.

Church of St Mary

The Church of St Mary the Virgin is the parish church of the village of Nash lying 3km south of the city of Newport, South Wales, Great Britain. Described as "the cathedral of the moors" by Monmouthshire historian Fred Hando, the large church is medieval in origin, with additions and restorations dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. It is a Grade I listed building as of 3 January 1963, primarily due to its "medieval tower with fine spire." Newman describes the fifteenth century steeple as "unique in South East Wales".

St Peter's Church

The Church of St Peter is the former parish church of the village of Peterstone, to the south west of the city of Newport, south Wales. Perpendicular in style, and dating from the fifteenth century, the church underwent two significant restorations, the first following the Great Flood in the early seventeenth century and then in the late nineteenth century. Described by Newman as "the noblest and most beautiful Perpendicular church in the whole county", the building was listed Grade I on 3 January 1963.

St Cadoc's Church

St Cadoc's Church is a Church in Wales church located in Caerleon, Newport, Wales and is Grade II* listed. It is one of many buildings associated with the travels of St Cadoc. Caerleon is the historically important site of the Roman legionary fortress of Isca Augusta. St Cadoc's Church stands over the principia , where the legionary standards were kept and statues of the Roman emperors venerated. The earliest surviving part of the church dates back to just after the kingdom of Glywysing was overrun by the Normans during the twelfth century and is thought to be the work of Hywel ap Iowerth, who was also the founder of the Cistercian Llantarnam Abbey. The current church is in the Perpendicular style, which was fashionable in the fifteenth century. The tower, which stands at the southwest corner of the church, has a lower stage that was probably part of the original Norman church, incorporating twelfth/thirteenth century lancet windows. The church features a series of impressive stained-glass windows depicting the life of Christ and symbolising the faith and devotion of the saints associated with Caerleon. St Cadoc's Church has been designated as Grade II* listed since 1951, as a centrepiece of the village with a fine medieval tower.

Somerton TARDIS

The Somerton TARDIS is a police box on Acacia Avenue/Somerton Crescent off Chepstow Road in the Somerton area of Newport, South Wales. The police box is the only remaining one of four that were in Newport and it is a Grade II listed building. Police boxes were deployed in the UK as a police telephone communications point prior to public and mobile phones being widely available. The Somerton police box has a lamp fixing on top which would flash to indicate an incoming call. The first UK police boxes were deployed in 1888 with the familiar 'TARDIS' shape first appearing in 1929. UK Police discontinued use of such boxes by 1969. The Somerton police box became known in Newport as the TARDIS as a reference to the television series Doctor Who, in which the Doctor's time machine appears as a police box due to its chameleon circuit being stuck. During the 1980s local residents painted a long multi-coloured scarf on the blue police box as worn by the fourth Doctor, played by actor Tom Baker 1974–1981. The earliest UK police boxes were of wooden construction but the Somerton box is a concrete construction. Consequently, it deteriorated over the years, largely due to concrete cancer. In January 2010 a grant of £10,500 was allocated by Cadw to restore the structure as a recognition of its importance as a local landmark.

Newport Museum and Art Gallery is a museum, library and art gallery in the city of Newport, south Wales. It is located in Newport city centre on John Frost Square and is adjoined to the Kingsway Shopping Centre. The Museum opened in 1888.

National Roman Legion Museum

The National Roman Legion Museum is a museum in Caerleon in the city of Newport, south-east Wales. It is part of the wider network of Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales.

Newport Market

Newport Market is a traditional Victorian indoor market, built in 1854 in Newport, South Wales. It is an early example of a large-span cast iron-frame building featuring a glass-filled barrel roof. Newport bus station is located immediately outside the Upper Dock Street entrance to Newport Market and a short walk from Newport railway station.

Beechwood Park

Beechwood Park is a large public park situated in the Beechwood area on the east side of the city of Newport, South Wales. Beechwood House was built as a private residence by George Fothergill, a former Mayor of Newport. It was designed in a classical style using Bath stone, by architects Habershon, Pite Fawckner. In 1900 the Beechwood estate was purchased by Newport Corporation and opened as a public park. The Co-operative Congress Souvenir contains the following description: This park of twenty-two acres stands on the rising ground on the east side of the river, and lying between Chepstow Road and Christchurch Road. It consists of Beechwood House, with its extensive grounds, formerly the property of the late Mr. Fothergill, tobacco manufacturer of this town. It was acquired by the Corporation for the purpose of a public park at a cost of £11,500 and was thrown open to the public in July 1900. Immediately in front of the house are tennis and bowls courts. The level portion of the upper ranges of the park is used for cricket in summer and football in winter. The balcony round the house has an array of seats under it, so that when seated under the shelter thereof one may enjoy a grand view of the Bristol Channel and distant English coast. There is an entrance from Christchurch Road, as also from Beechwood Road. The park stands 270 feet above sea level. Current facilities include two childrens play areas, paddling pool, bowling green and pavilion and tennis courts. In 2006, work began on the renovation and conversion of Beechwood House to become the Beechwood House Entrepreneurship Centre.
