King John's Palace

King Johns Palace is a ruined Norman merchants house in Southampton, England. Incorrectly believed for a period to have been used by King John, resulting in its modern name, the west wall of the house was converted to form part of the citys defensive walls in the early 14th century and its archways contain what may be Britains earliest surviving gunports. The structure now forms part of the Tudor House Museum in the city and is a Scheduled Ancient Monument.

SeaCity Museum

The SeaCity Museum is a museum in Southampton, England, which opened on 10 April 2012 to mark the centenary of RMS Titanics departure from the city. It is housed within a part of the Grade II* listed civic centre building which previously housed the magistrates court and police station. The museum contains two permanent exhibitions, one dedicated to Southamptons connection with RMS Titanic, and the other to the citys role as gateway to the world. A third space for temporary exhibitions is housed in a purpose built pavilion extension to the civic centre. Further phases of development may yet add to the exhibition space. The museum was designed by Wilkinson Eyre with Kier Southern serving as the main contractor. The budget for the museum was £15M, approximately £5M of which came from the Heritage Lottery Fund, with Southampton City Council and Southampton Cultural Development Trust providing the remainder. The council had planned on selling works from their municipal art collection to fund the museum, but backed down after encountering significant opposition from both within and outside the city.

Medieval Merchant's House

The Medieval Merchants House is a restored late-13th-century building in Southampton, Hampshire, England. Built in about 1290 by John Fortin, a prosperous merchant, the house survived many centuries of domestic and commercial use largely intact. German bomb damage in 1940 revealed the medieval interior of the house, and in the 1980s it was restored to resemble its initial appearance and placed in the care of English Heritage, to be run as a tourist attraction. The house is built to a medieval right-angle, narrow plan design, with an undercroft to store wine at a constant temperature, and a first-storey bedchamber that projects out into the street to add additional space. The building is architecturally significant because, as historian Glyn Coppack highlights, it is "the only building of its type to survive substantially as first built"; it is a Grade I listed building and scheduled monument.

John Hansard Gallery

The John Hansard Gallery is a contemporary visual art gallery located at the University of Southampton. It is one of United Kingdoms leading gallery. Previous exhibitions have included Panacea an artists collaboration between Michael Pinsky and Walker Bromwich;There Where You Are Not by Alec Finlay, Jeremy Millar, Guy Moreton; "Lines in the Sand" by Joan Jonas; and "20 Million Mexicans Cant be Wrong" with Francis Alÿs and Santiago Sierra. From the 11 February 31 March 2012, the gallery hosted an art exhibition of new cutting edge 3d technology by designer David Cotterrell. David is an installation artist and launched this new exhibition entitled Monsters of the Id. using a new 3d technique of creating art work. This interprets his experiences through image manipulation, staging, CGI, 3d scanning, 3d printing and new projection techniques.

Southampton City Art Gallery

The Southampton City Art Gallery is an art gallery in Southampton, southern England. It is located in the Civic Centre on Commercial Road. The gallerys art collection covers six centuries of European art history, with over 3,500 works. It is housed in an example of 1930s municipal architecture. The gallery holds a Designated Collection, considered of national importance. Highlights of the permanent collection include a 14th-century altarpiece by Allegretto Nuzi, of the Italian Giambattista Pittoni; the Perseus series by Burne-Jones; paintings by the Camden Town Group and The London Group; sculpture by Jacob Epstein, Auguste Rodin, Edgar Degas, Henri Gaudier Brzeska, Richard Deacon and Tony Cragg; and Richard Long photographs. Thousands of visitors explore the exhibitions and displays every month and, through a programme of educational activities, Southampton City Art Gallery provides opportunities for greater access, involvement and understanding of art for people of all ages. The gallerys educational service works closely with a range of professional visual artists, including Melanie Rose, Debra Marsh, Jo Bresloff and Alastair Eales. Southampton City Art Gallery has won several awards and continues to be one of Southamptons most popular visitor attractions.

The Wool House

The Wool House is a medieval warehouse in Southampton, Hampshire, which previously housed the Southampton Maritime Museum. The Wool House was built in the late 14th century to store wool for export to Italy. In the early 19th century it was used as a prison for Napoleonic French prisoners of war. The building was restored by Southampton City Corporation and adapted to house Southampton Maritime Museum, which opened in June 1966 and moved to SeaCity Museum in January 2012. It is a Grade I listed building. A plaque on the wall of The Wool House records its history: This building was erected in the 14th century for the storage of wool before export to the continent in the galleys and carracks of Venice and Genoa. The wool trade was the basis of Southamptons prosperity in the middle ages. During the Napoleonic wars The Wool House was used to accommodate French prisoners of war, some of whose names may be seen carved on the beams of the roof. This building was restored by the city corporation and opened as a Maritime Museum in June 1966. During the early part of the 20th century, the premises were occupied by The Moonbeam Engineering Company Limited who built motor launches and later expanded to include the sale of wrought iron propellers and marine engines for export around the world. Edwin Moon used a corner of the workshop to realise his dream of constructing and flying an aircraft of his own design which he flew from land at North Stoneham in 1910, on fields which subsequently became Southampton International Airport. The Maritime Museum, housed here from 1966 to 2012, documented the maritime heritage of Southampton and the Solent area, its history as a base for ocean liners and in particular its connections to RMS Titanic. Its mission statement was: "To collect, preserve, display and interpret artefacts and information to reflect the widest range of history of the city and its people; to promote enjoyment, awareness of the engagement with Southamptons heritage, via the presentation of the life of the city and its people." In June 2013, with permission from Southampton City Council, The Wool House was opened up by element arts, a pop-up arts organisation, who use the space as a gallery and community arts venue featuring exhibitions and live events music, dance, poetry, theatre, plus workshops for all ages. Element arts have The Wool House for a short time on a rolling month by month basis. A programme of their activities can be found at www.elementarts.co.uk. Plans were approved in 2014 to allow the Dancing Man Brewery to turn the building into a microbrewery and pub. The Wool House reopened on the 27th February 2015 as a brewpub/restaurant.

Mayfield Park

Mayfield Park is a recreational area straddling Woolston and Weston in Southampton, England. The stream that runs through the park is the boundary between the two districts of modern Southampton. The park is owned and maintained by Southampton City Council. It was previously part of the Chamberlayne familys Weston Grove estate. Much of the rest of the Weston Grove estate has been used to develop the post-war suburb of Weston. Mayfield Park survives because it was split from the Weston Grove estate in the nineteenth century, becoming the Mayfield Estate.

The Cenotaph

The Southampton Cenotaph is a stone memorial at Watts Park in Southampton, England, originally dedicated to the casualties of the First World War. The memorial was designed by Edwin Lutyens and features a cenotaph on a plinth atop a gently curved pillar. The monument was intended to be abstract and graceful, encouraging a perception of the soldier having fallen in a peaceful, "beautiful death". Decisions over which names should be engraved on the Southampton Cenotaph proved controversial in the 20th century, but the design was heavily influential in determining the form of Lutyens more famous Cenotaph in Whitehall. Long-term weather damage to the memorial led to a glass wall being built alongside it in 2011, incorporating the names of those Southampton citizens who died in subsequent conflicts.

Dolphin Hotel

The Dolphin Hotel is a Grade II* listed 4-star hotel, which is the oldest in Southampton, Hampshire. Recorded mentions of the hotel date back to 1454 although it is believed to older than this and remnants of the original medieval timbers, and stone vaulting are extant. The hotel was a famous coaching inn during the 17th-century and became quite fashionable the citys stint as a spa-town from 1750 to 1820. The Georgian frontage complete with coaching entrance and bow windows, said to be the biggest in England, was added in the late 18th century. Famous guests have included Queen Victoria, Admiral Lord Nelson, Edward Gibbon, William Makepeace Thackary and Jane Austen, who celebrated her 18th birthday there in 1793. Molly, a maid seen gliding across the ground floor from the legs up, is the most famous of the hotels six reported resident ghosts. The hotel reopened on 4 May 2010 following a £4 million redevelopment programme.

Red Lion Inn

The Red Lion Inn is a Grade II* listed pub, built in the late 15th/early 16th century, at 55 High Street, Southampton, Hampshire SO14 2NS. It is on the Campaign for Real Ales National Inventory of Historic Pub Interiors. The half-timbered room known as the court room was the site of the trial of the conspirators in the Southampton Plot. This appears to be a local legend. The trial took place in 1415, about 75 years before the foundation of this building, and there is no documentary evidence from 1415 that would locate it here. In any case, the plotters were imprisoned in the castle and it is unlikely that they were moved down the High Street for a trial in an inn when the castle afforded ample facilities. A mournful procession of ghosts reportedly sighted leaving from the inn has been linked to the plotters. The inn itself is haunted by a barmaid, described as being in her sixties and only visible above the knees, who reportedly drifts through the bar area.

Southampton Castle

Southampton Castle was located in the town of Southampton in Hampshire, England. Constructed after the Norman conquest of England, it was located in the north-west corner of the town overlooking the River Test, initially as a wooden motte and bailey design. By the late 12th century the royal castle had been largely converted to stone, playing an important part in the wine trade conducted through the Southampton docks. By the end of the 13th century the castle was in decline, but the threat of French raids in the 1370s led Richard II to undertake extensive rebuilding. The result was a powerfully defended castle, one of the first in England to be equipped with cannon. The castle declined again in the 16th century and was sold off to property speculators in 1618. After being used for various purposes, including the construction of a Gothic mansion in the early 19th century, the site was flattened and largely redeveloped. Only a few elements of the castle still remain visible in Southampton.

Canute's Palace

Canute's Palace in Southampton, England, is the name given to the ruins of a Norman merchant's house dating from the late twelfth century. Despite its name, the building has no connection with Canute the Great, nor was it a palace.

Southampton Tudor House and Garden is a historic building, museum, tourist attraction, and Grade I listed building in the Old Town of Southampton, England. Established as Southamptons first museum in 1912, the house was closed for nine years between 2002 and 2011 during an extensive renovation. The house is located in Bugle Street, opposite St. Michaels Square, in Southamptons Old Town.

Itchen Bridge

The Itchen Bridge is a bridge over the River Itchen in Southampton, Hampshire. It is a high-level hollow box girder bridge. It is located about a mile from the river mouth. The bridge spans 870 yards, is 92 feet at its highest point and weighs 62,000 tons. It was officially opened on 13 July 1977. At the Woolston end a toll booth operates daily. Southampton City Council levy a variable toll, depending on vehicle type. The toll was originally charged in order to help pay the £12.174 million it cost to build. The toll succeeded in this some years ago, but the toll remains to control the traffic in the areas surrounding the bridge. The bridge was opened by HRH Princess Alexandra, The Hon Mrs Angus Ogilvy on 13 July 1977, although it had been open to public foot traffic since 31 May 1977 when Mrs Edith Parks became the first person to cross it. On 21 December 2010, it was announced that an automatic toll system would replace the staffed booth, saving over £200,000 annually. The Itchen Bridges set of blue energy-saving lights are very bright, and can be seen from up to five miles down Southampton Water from the bridge.

Chessel Bay

Chessel Bay is the name given to the bay formed on the eastern side of a large bend in the River Itchen to the east of the district of Northam in the city of Southampton, Hampshire, England. Chessel Bay Local Nature Reserve, designated by the City Council in 1991, is located here. It comprises a narrow strip of woodland, a parallel strip of shingle and saltmarsh and a substantial area of mudflats. At low tide the mudflats are exposed attracting wading birds and wildfowl: curlew, oystercatchers and dunlin can be seen throughout the year. In winter, the site is also used as a stop-over for other migrating birds such as brent geese. At low tide, mudflats are exposed, and these attract feeding estuary birds. The mudflats are also nationally and internationally important; being part of the Lee-on-Solent to Itchen estuary Site of Special Scientific Interest and part of the Southampton Water and Solent Marshes Special Protection Area . Local volunteers, Friends of Chessel Bay, team up with the City Council twice a year to combat the large amount of litter which accumulates in the bay, and carry out management of the Reserve.

Peartree Green

Peartree Green is an open space on high ground on the east bank of the River Itchen in Southampton. A 16/17th century building, Peartree House, still stands, though is today concealed by private housing. The house and the green take their name from a pear tree that grew near the parish church. Some of the original open space has been built on, but a large proportion remains as a recreational area. It contains a church and the remains of a boarding school. It overlooks the River Itchen to St Marys Church in Southampton.

Southampton Old Cemetery is a cemetery located in Southampton, England. The cemetery has had various titles including The Cemetery by the Common, Hill Lane Cemetery and is currently known as Southampton Old Cemetery. An Act of Parliament was required in 1843 to acquire the land from Southampton Common. It covers an area of 27 acres and the total number of burials is estimated at 116,800. Currently there are 6 to 8 burials a year to existing family plots.

Marlands Shopping Centre

The Marlands Shopping Centre was opened on 5 September 1991. At the time, the Marlands Shopping Mall was the largest shopping centre in Southampton and the first significant shopping centre in the city, however it is now dwarfed by WestQuay, which opened in 2000. The Marlands Shopping Centre was constructed to an extremely PostModern design, which was described at the time of opening by one critic as looking like "something made of Lego". The Centre was built on the site of Southamptons bus station, a popular rose garden and some terraced housing. Some of the facades of the houses were retained and form an interesting part of the centres atrium. The centre is laid out across two levels, with escalators connecting them at the North West entrance and escalators and glass lifts connecting them in the atrium, at the South of the centre. Unlike most of its contemporaries, the Marlands Shopping Centre does not contain a car park of any kind the designated car park for the centre is accessed by going through Southamptons unusual ASDA supermarket which is on a slope you go in on the ground floor and come out on the tenth floor and across a bridge. The layout of the centre consists of an L-shaped mall where the street entrance at Above Bar Street leads through the centres main arcade, to terminate at a large anchor store. The original anchor tenant of the mall was Dunnes Stores, though following their exit this facility was later occupied by Matalan. In 2014 it was confirmed that the Matalan store would be split to provide retail stores for Peacocks and Poundworld. Other significant stores within the centre include Poundland, CeX, The Disney Store and F. Hinds. The upper level of the centre has never been hugely successful many of the units have been empty for some time. This lack of success is mainly due to the centres location which is to the Northern part of the main shopping area although still in the centre of the city. In 2005-2006 the main entrance to the centre was significantly refurbished. The original Postmodern sign tower was replaced with an ultramodern glass and steel canopy and a new Costa Coffee outlet. An information desk was also added. The telephone of the management offices however stayed the same as 8033 9164. On Thursday 19 August 2010 The Mall was sold as a £136m deal. Other Malls throughout the UK have been sold and will now be run as part of a group, together with others in Gloucester, Romford and Falkirk, by a specially created management company called The Other Retail Group.

Franciscan Friary

The Franciscan Friary of Southampton was founded c. 1233. It occupied a south-eastern area of the city, within the walls and adjacent to God's House Tower. The friary was notable for its water supply system, which supplied water for use by the friars themselves and by the other inhabitants of Southampton. The friary was dissolved in 1538 and the last remains were swept away in the 1940s. The site is now occupied by Friary House. Elsewhere, remnants of the extensive water supply system still survive today.

Joiners Arms

The Joiners Arms is a small music venue in a pub on St Mary's Street, St Mary's, Southampton, England. It has played host to many up-and-coming bands. The venue is currently owned by Tim Betts. The Joiners opened as a music venue in 1968. The maximum capacity is 200 people. In May 2013, the venue was shortlisted in the top ten of a contest run by NME to find Britain's best small music venue. In June 2013, it was announced that the venue won the competition. In December 2006, writer John Grey released a book entitled Access One Step: The Official History of the Joiners Arms, which documents the history of the venue and includes a foreword by Razorlight drummer Andy Burrows. Shirley Parish Church

Shirley Parish Church is an Anglican parish church which meets in Shirley, Southampton. The church owns two buildings, St James' and St John's churches. St James' is the church in which footballer Alan Shearer was married, and is a Grade II listed building.

Church of St. Julien

St. Julien's Church on Winkle Street in Southampton was the chapel of the Hospital of St. Julien or God's House which was founded c. 1197 as an almshouse and hostel for travellers on pilgrimage to Canterbury. It was used regularly by French Protestants from the 16th century until 1939 and is thus also known as the French Church. The church is sometimes referred to as "St Julian's" but Southampton City Council's Heritage Environment Record clarifies that "St Julien's" is the correct spelling, which is also used on Ordnance Survey maps. The building is Grade I listed, having first been listed on 14 July 1953. The building was extensively restored in 1861 and consists of a stone rubble exterior and tiled roof, with a low square tower. Inside the church is the Leper's Squint Stoup Monument commemorating those that were executed in the Southampton Plot of 1415, although the monument itself is thought to date from the 19th century. The chapel is now privately owned, with only occasional public access on open days and guided walks run by the city's official tourist guides.

Ocean Village

Ocean Village is a mixed-use marina, residential, business and leisure development on the mouth of the River Itchen in Southampton, on the south coast of England. Originally the site of Southampton's first working docks, the "Outer Dock" which opened in 1842, the area was redeveloped in 1986 and became the leisure marina it is today. After experiencing a period of stalled development with the late-2000s recession, Ocean Village is now currently undergoing another series of major, multimillion-pound redevelopment projects and is set to become one of the main leisure destinations in Southampton. Current recreational facilities include two cinemas, cafes, wine bars and restaurants. The marina is managed and owned by Marina Developments Limited , a division of British-based Yattendon Investment Trust. The area, formerly used for commercial ships, now offers 375 berths and the basin is deep enough to provide mooring facilities for tall ships and large yachts. The Global Challenge yacht races started from here in 1992, 1996 and 2000, and the 2011–12 Clipper Round the World Yacht Race set sail from here in 2011. Ocean Village is also the base for the Royal Southampton Yacht Club. A number of large companies have offices or regional headquarters in the complex, including HSBC, Barclays plc and PricewaterhouseCoopers. The marina is home to the historical building, Enterprise House, which was originally a dock warehouse and has now been converted into serviced offices.

John I. Thornycroft & Company

John I. Thornycroft & Company Limited, usually known simply as Thornycroft was a British shipbuilding firm founded by John Isaac Thornycroft in Chiswick in 1866. It moved to Woolston, Southampton, in 1908, merging in 1966 with Vosper & Company to form one organisation called Vosper Thornycroft. From 2002 to 2010 the company acquired several international and US based defence and services companies, and changed name to the VT Group. In 2010 the company was absorbed by Babcock International who retained the UK and international operations, but sold the US based operations to the American Jordan Company, who took the name VT Group.

Holyrood Church

Holyrood Church was one of the original five churches serving the old walled town of Southampton, England. Built in 1320, the church was destroyed by enemy bombing during the blitz in November 1940. In 1957 the shell of the church was dedicated as a memorial to the sailors of the Merchant Navy.
