Mold is a town in Flintshire, Wales, on the River Alyn. It is the administrative seat of Flintshire County Council, and was the county town of Clwyd from 1974 to 1996. According to the 2011 UK Census, it has a population of 10,058.

Hawarden

Hawarden , Flintshire, Wales is a village, community and electoral ward in part of the Deeside conurbation on the Welsh/English border and was historically significant settlement in the area, see Hawarden Castle. At the 2001 Census, the population of Hawarden Ward was 1,858 . increasing to 1887 at the 2011 census. The total population for the greater community of Hawarden, which comprises also Ewloe (which also has a castle), Mancot and Aston, was 13,539, increasing to 13,920 at the 2011 census. The scenic, wooded Hawarden Park forms the southern part of the community. Hawarden Bridge is the industrial development that lies across Shotton/Queensferry and the Dee. The west of the main street is called The Highway, its start marked by the crossroads with the fountain in the middle, near which are public houses, some centred on restaurants. Hawarden is located 6.7 miles from Chester and is 4 miles from the English border. In 2014 Hawarden was named in The Sunday Times’ annual Best Places To Live List.

Greenfield

Greenfield is a village on the outskirts of Holywell, Flintshire, north-east Wales, located on the edge of the River Dee estuary. At the 2001 Census, it had a population of 2,741. Subsequently all the Greenfield population was listed under Holywell and only the electoral ward remained. The population of this ward remained unchanged from 2001. Greenfield used to be called Bluefield.

Buckley

Buckley is a town and community in Flintshire, located in north-east Wales. It is situated 2 miles from the county town of Mold and is contiguous with the nearby villages of Ewloe, Alltami and Mynydd Isa. The town is located on the A549 road, with the larger A55 road passing nearby. Buckley is the second largest town in Flintshire in terms of population. According to the 2001 Census, the community had a total population of 14,568, increasing to 15,665 at the 2011 census. Notable nearby landmarks include Ewloe Castle.

Shotton

Shotton is a town in Flintshire lying within the Deeside conurbation along the River Dee, adjoining Connah's Quay, near the border with England. It is located 5 miles west of Chester and can be reached by road from the A548. The name probably derives from Anglo-Saxon Scēot-tūn = "farmstead on or near a steep slope". At the 2011 Census Shotton had a population of 6,663.

Caergwrle

Caergwrle is a village in the county of Flintshire, in north east Wales. Approximately 5-6 miles from Wrexham and situated on the A541 road, it is contiguous with the villages of Abermorddu and Hope, though, in parts, the Caergwrle and Hope are separated by a river border. The village lies on the River Alyn and sits at the base of Hope Mountain. At the 2001 Census, the population was 1,650. The population was subsequently absorbed in the Community of Hope and only the electoral ward remained. The population of this ward as taken at the 2011 census was 1,619.

Talacre

Talacre is a village in Flintshire on the north coast of Wales in the community of Llanasa. It is near Point of Ayr on the west side of the River Dee estuary and has a sandy beach with dunes with large holiday caravan parks adjacent. The hills of the Clwydian Range behind the village form the eastern boundary of the Vale of Clwyd. The name Talacre is a combination of the Welsh words tal, meaning end, and acrau, meaning acres. In the north-east Welsh dialect, acrau is pronounced as acre. The village is probably most popular for the lighthouse on the nearby beach and the Talacre Beach Caravan Park, a short walk away from the Presthaven Sands holiday park. The lighthouse has been noted for numerous ghostly sightings, people claiming to see a figure wearing old fashioned lighthouse keeper clothes and standing in front of the glass dome of the abandoned lighthouse. The lighthouse was featured in popular British television drama Skins, in the episode Skins Pure. Talacre was used by the military during the Second World War, as an aircraft firing range. Fighters flew over the remote village every day, shooting at wooden targets in the dunes and at drogues towed by aircraft. It was also used for testing new devices, such as "window" the anti-radar foil that, on occasion, covered the whole village with silver. The village is often used as part of Paul O'Grady's comedy act, telling stories of how he spent many summers "Stuck in a four berth caravan in Talacre", and is therefore now part of popular culture as a famous "typically British" seaside holiday resort. Part of the beach where the lighthouse is situated has been shown briefly in a recent Dulux paint advert with the Old English Sheep Dog mascot.

St Winefride's Well

St Winefrides or Winifreds Well is a well located in Holywell, Flintshire, in Wales. It claims to be the oldest continually visited pilgrimage site in Great Britain and is a grade I listed building. The well is believed to be connected to St Marys well and chapel in Cefn Meiriadog, Denbighshire. It is one of the few locations mentioned by name in the anonymous medieval alliterative poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.

Pontblyddyn

Pontblyddyn is a small village outside Leeswood, in Flintshire, Wales and is situated around 8 miles from Wrexham. Plas Teg, one of the most important Jacobean era houses in Wales is located near the village. Engineer Joseph Clegg was born in the village where he lived for most of his childhood.

Halkyn

Halkyn is a village in Flintshire, north-east Wales and situated between Pentre Halkyn, Northop and Rhosesmor. At the 2001 Census the population of the community was 2,876, increasing slightly to 2,879 at the 2011 Census.

Caergwrle Castle

Caergwrle Castle, also known as Queens Hope in scholarly texts, is located in the town of Caergwrle, in Flintshire, Wales. It was the final castle to be built by Welsh rulers before the loss of Welsh independence in 1283. Built on a steep hill near the Anglo-Welsh border, the castle has views which extend far into Cheshire. Construction of the castle began in 1277, after King Edward I gave the lordship of Hope to Dafydd ap Gruffudd as reward for his service in the Welsh war concluded earlier that year. Notable features included two D-shaped towers and a great circular keep overlooking the approach to the south-east. It has been speculated that Dafydd employed English masons to work on the castle, which was apparently unfinished when Dafydd revolted in 1282. By the time Edward had gathered an army to invade Wales in June, Dafydd had already retreated from Caergwrle, and had slighted the castle, even blocking up its well to deny it to the English. Edward promptly began rebuilding the castle, and gave it to his wife, Eleanor of Castile. However, a fire in 1283 gutted the castle and it was never rebuilt. Today, the castles ruins are cared for by Caergwrle Community Council. They are a grade I listed structure.

TSS Duke of Lancaster

The TSS Duke of Lancaster is a railway steamer passenger ship that operated in Europe from 1956 to 1979, and is currently beached near Mostyn Docks, on the River Dee, north-east Wales. It replaced an earlier 3,600 ton ship of the same name operated by the London Midland and Scottish Railway company between Heysham and Belfast.

Hawarden Castle

Hawarden Old Castle is a Grade I listed medieval castle near Hawarden, Flintshire, Wales. Its oldest origins are indeterminate and the oldest fortifications on this site may date back to the Iron Age, later being used as a Norman Motte-and-bailey castle which was reportedly destroyed and replaced in a short period during the 13th century. The castle played an important role during the Welsh struggle for independence in the 13th century. At Easter 1282, Dafydd ap Gruffudd attacked Hawarden Castle, thereby starting the final Welsh conflict with Norman England, in the course of which Welsh independence was lost. King Edward Is sense of outrage was such that he designed a punishment for Dafydd harsher than any previous form of capital punishment; Dafydd was hanged, drawn, and quartered in Shrewsbury in October 1283. In 1294 the castle was captured during the revolt of Madog ap Llywelyn. After the English Civil War in the 17th century the castle was slighted on the orders of Oliver Cromwell. Its ruins are on the New Hawarden Castle estate and are open to the public on some Sundays, typically the second and fourth Sundays in summertime.

Flintshire Bridge

The Flintshire Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge spanning the Dee Estuary in North Wales. The bridge links Flint and Connahs Quay to the shore north of the River Dee at the southern end of the Wirral Peninsula. The bridge cost £55million to construct. This cost was met by the then Welsh Office and in the future, maintenance costs are expected to be the responsibility of the local authority Flintshire County Council. The bridge was officially opened in 1998 by Queen Elizabeth II. It carries part of the A548 road and has been nicknamed the bridge to nowhere by locals. It is the largest asymmetric cable-stayed bridge in the whole of Britain. The Welsh Assembly Government is now considering the Flintshire Bridge as an alternative route for a major road expansion through the county, after plans to expand the A494 in Deeside were scrapped in March 2008.

Plas Teg

Plas Teg is a Jacobean house in Wales. Located near the village of Pontblyddyn, Flintshire between Wrexham and Mold, it was built by Sir John Trevor I in about 1610. At the time of construction it was the most advanced house in Wales. Throughout the early 17th Century it was primarily a family home and the setting for lavish entertainments put on by the Trevor family. It was after the death of Lady Margaret Trevor, wife of Sir John Trevor, and the onset of the Civil War, that it was let out and the family lived in their other houses. According to The Archers Register, a Year Book of Facts for 1865 Plas Teg was a venue for the Royal British Bowmen . On 10 August 1865, an RBB meeting was held at Plas Teg and ninety arrows were shot at 60 yards. For the ladies, Miss H. Trevor Roper scored 34 hits and recorded a score of 116, coming third. Lady Edwardes came first with 58 hits and a score of 230. For the gentlemen, Mr Henry Potts came first with 89 hits and a score of 293; Mr R. Trevor Roper was in sixth place, with 23 hits and a score of 69. The estate finally left the hands of the Trevors around 1930. During the second world war, the house and outbuildings were requisitioned by the War Office to house soldiers and it was during this time that the decay of Plas Teg began. By the mid-1950s, Plas Teg was in a state of advanced decay and under threat of demolition. Following a public outcry, the derelict house was purchased by a Trevor descendant, Patrick Trevor-Roper, who partially restored the building with funds from the Historic Buildings Council. He then leased out the house until 1977 until Mr and Mrs William Llewelyn bought the house. The couple only used parts of the ground floor but the rest of the house became little more than a ruin. Fortunes dramatically changed in 1986 when Cornelia Bayley acquired Plas Teg for £75,000. She carried out a series of works at a cost of £400,000, £199,000 of which was funded by Cadw. Ten months after purchase, the house was opened to the public and still is to this day. A book detailing the history of Plas Teg and the Trevor family was released by Mark Baker in 2006 and has been reprinted October 2007 after selling out. The revised second edition tackles the theories regarding Judge Jeffreys as well as expanding on the history of Plas Teg. Plas Teg is said to be one of the "most haunted" houses in Wales and has featured on ITVs Extreme Ghost Stories and Livings Most Haunted programme on two occasions. The second occasion was featured as part of the Halloween Most Haunted Live! series on 31 October 2007. It was also featured in Ghost Hunting With... Girls Aloud in 2006, where the girls visited the house as their first location, where they claimed to have experienced paranormal activity. The county of Flintshire is said to be a land of spirits and hauntings. One notable case is that of the grey lady, described as the most popular of such entities in North East Wales. The old woman is reported to have been seen moving across the A541 adjacent to Plas Teg into the path of traffic. On 4 March 2010, Plas Teg was the subject of a Channel 4 television programme presented by hotelier Ruth Watson as part of her Country House Rescue series. The episode was rebroadcast on 29 September 2011 and again in February 2012. In 2015, the house was shown as a feature in the Channel 4 series Obsessive Compulsive Cleaners.

Basingwerk Abbey

Basingwerk Abbey is a Grade I listed ruined abbey near Holywell, Flintshire, Wales. The abbey, which was founded in the 12th century, belonged to the Order of Cistercians. It maintained significant lands in the English county of Derbyshire. The abbey was abandoned and its assets sold following the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1536. The site is now managed by Cadw the national Welsh heritage agency.

Clwyd Theatr Cymru

Clwyd Theatr Cymru, known until 1998 as Theatr Clwyd, is a regional arts centre located 1 mile from Mold, Flintshire, in north-east Wales. The complex contains five auditoria: The Anthony Hopkins Theatre The Emlyn Williams Theatre Studio 2 The Clwyd Room Cinema . The complex forms part of the County Civic Centre at Mold, being immediately adjacent to the Shire Hall . It was built at the instigation of the former Flintshire County Council before it was abolished in the local government reorganisation of 1974 and replaced by Clwyd County Council, and the complex was opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 1976 under the artistic direction of George Roman. Toby Robertson was the theatres artistic director between 1985 and 1992. Robertson introduced several leading actors, including Vanessa Redgrave, Sir Michael Hordern and Timothy Dalton, to the theatre. Robertson was succeeded as artistic director by Helena Kaut-Howson, followed by Terry Hands from 1997 to 2015. Hands successor, Tamara Harvey, was appointed in June 2015. HTV Wales had offices and a studio at the site from the late 1970s to the mid 1980s, but production was scaled back following the opening of the companys new studio complex at Culverhouse Cross in Cardiff. A small news operation remained in Mold until the late 1990s but closed when HTV moved its North Wales news operations to Colwyn Bay and Wrexham. The name of the complex was changed in 1998 to reflect the reorganisation of local government at that time which abolished Clwyd as a county and brought Flintshire back into existence, although defined by different borders from the original ones. Apart from hosting visiting theatre companies, Clwyd Theatr Cymru is home to Wales major drama producing theatre company, under the direction of Terry Hands KBD, which stages their own productions throughout the year and also regularly performs on tour around Wales. The then Theatr Clwyd was famous for, among other things, hosting the successful second stage performance of the Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy.

Penycloddiau

Penycloddiau is a hill in Flintshire, North Wales, and one of five Marilyns in the range. Offas Dyke Path crosses the summit, and the Clwydian Way skirts the western slopes. Like Foel Fenlli further south, Penycloddiau has an iron-age hill fort around the summit area. At 26 hectares, it is one of the largest hill forts in Wales.

St Michael's Church

St Michaels Church, Trelawnyd, is in the village of Trelawnyd, Flintshire, Wales. It is an active Anglican parish church in the benefice of Dyserth and Trelawnyd and Cwm, the deanery of St Asaph, the archdeaconry of St Asaph, and the diocese of St Asaph. The church is designated by Cadw as a Grade II* listed building.

Moel y Parc

Moel y Parc is a hill on the border between Denbighshire and Flintshire in Wales. It is one of the Clwydian Hills, rising 398 metres above sea level and is located at OS grid reference SJ114703. There is a television mast near the summit. The summit marks the boundary of Aberwheeler and Ysceifiog communities, and is the site of a cairn and tumulus.

Deeside Leisure Centre

Deeside Leisure Centre is a sports centre located in Queensferry, Flintshire, Wales. Its facilities include Deeside Ice Rink, an Olympic-sized inline hockey rink, badminton courts and squash courts. The Centre was the venue for the 1974 Wightman Cup match. The ice rink is the National Centre for Ice Sports in Wales and is home to the ice hockey teams the Deeside Dragons, the Flintshire Phantoms and the Deeside Demons. It was used as a temporary home by the Manchester Phoenix during the 2006-07 EIHL season while the Altrincham Ice Dome was being constructed. The Phoenix moved back to Deeside for the 2015/16 Season after they were kicked out of Altrincham by the rink's owners the Phoenix are hoping to move into a brand new rink in Manchester from the 2016/17 season. There has also been a new indoor skate park and gym added to the leisure centre. The Leisure Centre is run and controlled by Flintshire County Council which also governs similar leisure centres in towns such as Buckley, Mold and Connah's Quay. It offers an 'actif' membership which offers reduced admission prices over standard admission.

St Winefride's Church

St Winefride's Church is a Roman Catholic Parish church in Holywell, Flintshire. It was founded by the Society of Jesus and was first church in the United Kingdom to be administered by the Vocationist Fathers. It is Grade II listed building. It was the first church the Jesuits built in Wales.

The Gop

The Gop is a neolithic mound lying north of Trelawnyd in Flintshire, Wales, in the Clwydian Range. Oval in form, it is the second-largest such mound in Britain after Silbury Hill. Excavations have uncovered no burial chambers or other underground works. This may indicate that it was used as a look-out or hill fort; there is evidence that there was a considerable amount of stone on the top of hill. In the 17th century, its prominent position allowed a beacon to be placed there. The mound lies on top of Gop Hill , a natural limestone outcrop, in the side of which are the Gop Caves.

St Mary's Church, Cilcain, is in the village of Cilcain, Flintshire, Wales. It is an active Anglican church in the Bro Famau group of parishes, in the Mold Mission Area, in the archdeaconry of Wrexham and the diocese of St Asaph. The church is designated by Cadw as a Grade I listed building.

St Deiniol's Church

St Deiniol's Church, Hawarden, is in the village of Hawarden, Flintshire, Wales. It is the parish church of the Rectorial Benefice of Hawarden in the deanery of Hawarden, the archdeaconry of Wrexham, and the diocese of St Asaph. The church has associations with W. E. Gladstone and his family, and is designated by Cadw as a Grade II* listed building.

St Mary's Church

St Mary's Church, Mold is an Anglican church in Flintshire, Wales and a Grade I listed building. It is an active parish church in the deanery of Mold, the archdeaconry of Wrexham and the diocese of St Asaph. The church has historical associations with the Stanley family, Earls of Derby and displays the heraldic symbols of the family. These include the Eagle and Child, which was adopted by the family in the 15th century, and the Three Legs of Man, which relates to the time when the Stanleys were Lords of Mann. Under Fr. Rex Matthias the church has embraced an Anglo-Catholic style of Churchmanship which has increased its congregation and proven very popular.

St Mark's Church

St Mark's Church, Connah's Quay is in the town of Connah's Quay, Flintshire, Wales. It is an active Anglican church in the deanery of Hawarden, the archdeaconry of Wrexham and the diocese of St Asaph. The church is the parish church for Connah's Quay and the mother church of St David's Church, Connah's Quay. It is designated as a Grade II listed building by Cadw. The new Vicar, Revd Robert Dennis, will be inducted in January 2014.

Holywell Workhouse Chapel

Holywell Workhouse Chapel was built in association with Holywell Workhouse in Old Chester Road, Holywell, Flintshire, Wales (grid reference SJ189750). It was built, together with some "vagrants' wards" for the workhouse, in 1883-84 to a design by the Chester architect John Douglas. The chapel is built in stone with a slate roof and has a shingled flèche. The workhouse later became Lluesty Hospital. The chapel is designated by Cadw as Grade II listed building.
