Vignoles Bridge

Vignoles Bridge is a Scheduled Ancient Monument in the City of Coventry in the West Midlands of England. The bridge is a single-span iron footbridge over the River Sherbourne in the Spon End area, just to the west of Coventry city centre and 100 metres west-north-west of Sherbourne House . Thomas Telford developed the first techniques for maximising the potential of cast iron as a construction material, realising that the lighter frames could use flatter angles and less substantial foundations than timber bridges while preserving the single span, and thus the navigability of the waterways they cross. English Heritage, which is responsible for scheduling ancient monuments in England, considers all examples of iron bridges "which retain significant original fabric" to be of importance. Vignoles Bridge is of particular interest because it "survives well and retains its original features thus demonstrating its engineering design and reflecting the manufacturing process", despite having been moved from its original site. The bridge originally occupied a site on the Oxford Canal . It is cast iron and was built at Horseley Iron Works—whose name is cast into the span of the bridge on one side—in Tipton around 1835. The bridge, which was designed by Charles Vignoles, was moved to its current site in 1969. The walkway is covered with tarmac and has cast iron balustrades either side, while the abutments connecting the bridge to the river bank are brick.

Coventry Cathedral, also known as St Michaels Cathedral, is the seat of the Bishop of Coventry and the Diocese of Coventry, in Coventry, West Midlands, England. The current bishop is Christopher Cocksworth and the current Dean is John Witcombe. The city has had three cathedrals. The first was St. Marys, a monastic building, only a few ruins of which remain. The second was St Michaels, a 14th century Gothic church later designated cathedral, that remains a ruined shell after its bombing during the Second World War. The third is the new St Michaels Cathedral, built after the destruction of the former and a celebration of 20th century architecture.

St. Mary's Priory and Cathedral

St Mary's Priory and Cathedral was a religious institution in Coventry, England, founded in the 12th century by transformation of the former monastery of St Mary, and destroyed during the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the early 16th century. It was located on a site north of Holy Trinity and the former St Michael's parish churches in the centre of the city, on a site bordered by Priory Row to the south, Trinity Street to the west, and the River Sherbourne to the north. Excavated remains from the west end of the cathedral are open to the public.

Herbert Media was formerly known as the Depot Studios. It relocated to The Herbert and re-opened in October 2005.

Warwick Arts Centre

Warwick Arts Centre is a multi-venue arts complex at the University of Warwick in Coventry, England. It attracts around 300,000 visitors a year to over 3,000 individual events embracing contemporary and classical music, drama, dance, comedy, films and visual art. Warwick Arts Centre is the largest Arts Centre in the Midlands, and the largest venue of its kind in the UK outside the Barbican Centre in London. Warwick Arts Centre comprises six spaces on the same site, including a recently refurbished concert hall, two theatres, a cinema, gallery, and conference room as well as hospitality suites, a restaurant, cafe, shops, and two bars. The site also includes the University bookshop and a branch of the music and DVD retailer RISE. The Centre also houses the University of Warwick Music Centre with practice rooms, and an ensemble rehearsal room where music societies and groups such as the Brass Band rehearse.

Herbert Art Gallery and Museum

Herbert Art Gallery Museum is a museum, art gallery, records archive, learning centre and creative arts facility on Jordan Well, Coventry, England. It is named after Sir Alfred Herbert, a Coventry industrialist and philanthropist whose gifts enabled the original building to be opened in 1960. Building began in 1939, with an interruption by the Second World War, and the Herbert opened in 1960. In 2008 it reopened after a £14 million refurbishment. The Herbert is run by Culture Coventry, a registered charity, and admission is free. It derives financial support from donations, sales at the museum shop, and hiring the buildings out. In 2010, the museum and gallery received more than 300,000 visitors, making it one of the most popular free tourist attractions in the West Midlands.

Whitefriars

The buildings known as Whitefriars are the surviving fragments of a Carmelite friary founded in 1342 in Coventry, England. All that remains are the eastern cloister walk, a postern gateway in Much Park Street and the foundations of the friary church. It was initially home to a friary until the Dissolution of the Monasteries. During the 1500s it was owned by John Hales and served as King Henry VIII School, Coventry, before the school moved to St Johns Hospital, Coventry. It was home to a workhouse during the 1800s. The buildings are currently used by Herbert Art Gallery and Museum, Coventry. The cloister walk that remains would have been one of four when the friary was in use and is constructed from red sandstone. The wooden roof of the building is not an original but thought to have been brought from a nearby building during the 1500s. Little of the original buildings remain; only one cloister wing and the original gateway still stand. Various institutions in Coventry are named after the friary such as Whitefriars Ale House and Whitefriars Housing Group.

Ricoh Arena

Ricoh Arena is a stadium complex situated in the Rowleys Green district of the city of Coventry, England, containing a 32,609-seater rugby union and association football stadium, a 6,000 square metres exhibition hall, a hotel and a casino. The site is also home to Arena Park Shopping Centre, containing one of the largest Tesco Extra hypermarkets. The site was previously the Foleshill gasworks. The stadium is named after its sponsor, Japanese company Ricoh, which paid £10 million for the naming rights over 10 years. For the 2012 Summer Olympic Games, where stadium naming sponsorship was forbidden, the stadium was known as the City of Coventry Stadium. The arena was opened officially by Dame Kelly Holmes and sports minister Richard Caborn on 24 February 2007. By this time the arena had been open for a year and had already hosted a sell-out England U21 football match against Germany as well as a full season of Coventry City football matches. The Ricoh Arena was the first cashless stadium in the United Kingdom, with customers using a prepay smartcard system in the grounds bars and shops. However, the stadium now accepts cash at all kiosks. The arena has been operated by Arena Coventry Limited ever since the stadium opened with Coventry City F.C. becoming tenants of the arena. ACL was owned jointly by Coventry City Council and the Higgs Charity until both shareholders were bought out by rugby union Premiership club Wasps in October and November 2014. Wasps first home match in Coventry was on 21 December 2014 against London Irish.

Criterion Theatre

The Criterion Theatre is situated in Earlsdon, Coventry, England. It puts on about seven shows a year. The Company has won the Godiva Award for best theatre in the region several times. The current patrons are Pete Waterman, music producer and railway preservationist, born in Coventry and Ron Cook, stage and screen actor of Thunderbirds and Doctor Who fame, who first acted as an amateur at the Criterion. The Coventry born actor, Sir Nigel Hawthorne, was a former patron.

Tile Hill Wood

Tile Hill Wood is a wood between Hawthorn Lane and Banner Lane in the Tile Hill area of Coventry, England. It has been designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Local Nature Reserve. It is stewarded by the Coventry and District Natural History and Scientific Society. It is a mixed deciduous and coniferous woodland covering 69.92 acres, with examples of Norway Spruce, European Larch and Hazel coppice, together with Sycamore, Oak, Spruce, Birch, Chestnut, Ash and Pine. There are specially-built paths suitable for people with disabilities . These have metal tap rails for people with visual impairment. From 1930, Coventry Corporation established the wood as a Nature Reserve and it had a regular forester assigned to it. Rides were kept clear and the removal of waste was carried out by horse and cart rather than by tractor or lorry. During the Second World War, large areas of scrub and conifers were cleared to reduce the risk of fire from air-raids. During the cyclonic gale of March 1947, five acres of mature spruce were uprooted. These were replaced with young trees over several years, and helped to alter the ecological balance of the reserve. The wood received SSSI status in 1952. The status was renewed in 1986 under the Wildlife and Countryside Act of 1981.

Coombe Country Park

Coombe Country Park is a country park located in Warwickshire, England. Although the park is geographically in Warwickshire, it is only a few miles to the east of Coventry and is managed by Coventry City Council. The park has been developed from the grounds of an old abbey, the buildings of which have now been converted into the Coombe Abbey hotel. In the 18th century the landscape of the park was designed by Lancelot Brown making it an historically important site for the region. The park now contains 500 acres of woodlands, formal gardens, arboretum, open grasslands and lake. It has a visitor centre equipped with a Cafe, Gift shop, Discovery Centre, History room and Woodturners workshop. It also has a climbing forest, bird hide, summer wild flower meadow and an extensive events program.

Lady Herbert's Garden

Lady Herberts Garden is a garden in Coventry city centre, named as a memorial to Alfred Herberts second wife Florence. Construction and initial laying out began in 1930 and the last section was completed in 1939. It is built around several sections of the remains of Coventry city walls, including Swanswell and Cook Street Gates.

The Alan Higgs Centre

The Alan Higgs Centre, opened in September 2004, is a leisure centre situated in about 80 acres grounds near to the River Sowe, on Allard Way in the southeast of Coventry, England. It was designed by RHWL architects, and built by Galiford Try plc at a cost of about 8 million pounds to their client and the current owner, the Alan Higgs Centre Trust. The funds were provided by the Alan Edward Higgs Charity. The Coventry City Football Clubs Academy is based at The Alan Higgs Centre. There are four outdoor grass football pitches, a synthetic indoor pitch, and a synthetic floodlit outdoor pitch. It is also a venue for county netball games, and there is a skateboard area. The judo and volleyball competitions of the 2007 UK School Games were held in The Alan Higgs Centre, being one of the venues for the games which were held in the Coventry from 23 to 26 August 2007. In August 2013, non-league football team Coventry United announced that The Alan Higgs Centre would be their new home ground.

Butts Park Arena

Butts Park Arena is a multi-use sports stadium in Spon End, Coventry, England. Its main use is as a rugby stadium . It is the home ground for Coventry RFC and Coventry Bears, . It was formerly the home ground of the Coventry Jets, an American football team. The stadium has also hosted the local varsity day matches between Coventry University and the University of Warwick.

SkyDome Arena

The SkyDome Arena is a 3,000-seat multi-purpose arena in Coventry, England. It was built in 1999. It is home to the Coventry Blaze Ice hockey team. It was built as part of the SkyDome multiplex, along with the Odeon Cinema, The Spon Gate, Lava and Ignite . Jumpin Jaks, Harvester and Club M. The old Lava complex is now home to PureGym and the old Ignite complex is home to a Genting Casino. The Skydome complex now also houses a bar called Crosbys located at the end of the Ice rink. It is used for public ice skating sessions, ice skating lessons, Coventry Blaze Ice hockey Matches, concerts and various other events. It has also been the site of several large professional wrestling shows. The first wrestling show the SkyDome hosted was the UCoW Wrestling event in 2000 with stars such as Christopher Daniels and Doug Williams. The Skydome next hosted a couple of Frontier Wrestling Alliance shows in 2004 and 2005, "British Uprising 3" and "International Showdown 1" featuring stars such as AJ Styles, Colt Cobana, Dlo Brown and Terry Funk. Coventry next saw the likes of Mick Foley and The Sandman at Showstealer Promotions Universal Uproar in 2005. WWE hosted a date of its November 2005 United Kingdom tour here featuring John Cena, Triple H, Shawn Michaels amongst others. The venue has also worked with Total Nonstop Action Wrestling on their first UK tour in June 2008 with names such as Kurt Angle, Jeff Jarrett, Booker T, Rhino, Team 3D and more. The skydome also hosted NOAHs European Navigation in 2008 too. TNA came back to the venue in January 2010.

Ivor Preece Field

The Ivor Preece Field on Rugby Road, Binley Woods, Warwickshire is the home ground of Broadstreet RUFC, designed by SR Davis architects with the sports ground designed by Peter Jones Associates, Quantity Surveyors Bucknall Austin, project managed by Falcon House Project Management. The first game played here was on 1 March 2001 with the official opening in August 2002. The official opening day saw world cup winning captain Martin Johnson open the club and grounds. This saw a select presidents team take on the current first XV. The ground is named in honour of Ivor Preece , who played for and captained Coventry R.F.C. and the England national rugby union team in the 1950s and was president of Broadstreet RUFC. The 46 acres allow up to five rugby matches and one football match to be played with two of the rugby pitches floodlit. The rugby club and facilities plays host to all manor of rugby sides on varying levels. Not only Broadstreet RFC the grounds owners, but Coventry And District Union, Warwickshire RFU, Midlands RFU for training sessions and full games. In early 2008 for England Deaf Rugby Union in their matches against The Welsh Deaf Rugby Union in February and March saw the visit of The Scottish Deaf Rugby Union XV. The grounds have also played host to local football sides and the Coventry Cassidy Jets American football team.

St Osburg's Church

St Osburg's Church also known as the Church of the Most Holy Sacrament and St Osburg is a Roman Catholic Parish church in Coventry, West Midlands. It was built from 1843 to 1845 and was designed by Charles Hansom. It is situated in the city centre on the junction between Holyhead Road and the Coventry Ring Road. It was founded by the Benedictines from Downside Abbey and is a Grade II listed building.

St Barbara's Church

St Barbara's Church is in Earlsdon, a suburb of Coventry, West Midlands, England. It is an active Anglican parish church in the deanery of Coventry, South, the archdeaconry of Coventry, and the diocese of Coventry. The church was built in 1930-31 to replace a smaller church nearby. It was designed by Henry Paley of the Lancaster architects Austin and Paley, with a local man, Herbert Jackson, acting as clerk of works and consulting architect. The foundation stone was laid on 28 September 1930 by Sir Alfred Herbert, a local industrialist, and the church was consecrated on 26 September 1931. Due to a lack of finance, the church was never completed, the missing parts being the western 2½ bays, two porches, a baptistry and a bell turret. The total cost of the church was £17,644 , of which £975 was donated by Sir Alfred to build the Lady Chapel as a memorial to his late wife.

St James' Church

St James' Church is an 18th-century chapel situated in the grounds of Packington Hall, near Meriden, Warwickshire. It is a Grade I listed building. The church was built in 1789 to a design by architect Joseph Bonomi for the Earl of Aylesford as a private family chapel. It is said to commemorate the recovery of George III from insanity. The red brick church, in neo classical style, has an unusual square plan with four corner turrets topped with domes and finials. It houses an organ built by Thomas Parker, to specifications outlined by Handel in 1749, for his librettist Charles Jennens. Jennens' home Gopsall Hall, has not survived, but the organ passed to his relatives the Earls of Aylesford. The instrument was filmed and recorded for the documentary The Elusive English Organ.

Oxford Canal

The Oxford Canal is a 78-mile-long narrow canal in central England linking Oxford with Coventry via Banbury and Rugby. It connects with the River Thames at Oxford, to the Grand Union Canal at the villages of Braunston and Napton-on-the-Hill, and to the Coventry Canal at Hawkesbury Junction in Bedworth just north of Coventry. The canal was once an important artery of trade between the English Midlands and London, and is now highly popular among pleasure boaters. North of Napton-on-the-Hill, the canal forms part of the Warwickshire ring.

Coundon Court

Coundon Court is an all inclusive Academy in Coundon, Coventry, England. The Headteacher is Andrew Clay. Coundon Court is a much bigger school than average with approximately 1,750 students on roll (compared to a national average of 986 students) of which approximately 350 are in the sixth form. It is an 11–18, fully comprehensive school serving students from areas surrounding and including the centre of Coventry. The school became an Academy in April 2012 retaining the name and staff of the successful predecessor school. There is also an Early Years provision on site with 60-day care and pre-school places. Coundon Court is located in the northwestern suburbs of Coventry, adjacent to the open countryside of the Coundon Wedge.

The Westwood Academy (formerly The Westwood School) is an academy school for children aged 11 – 18 in Canley, Coventry, England. Although a small school (with just under 600 pupils) The Westwood School is gaining a reputation in the UK for leading learning - already leading and advising on many National, as well as local, initiatives. With its new sports centre completed in July 2008. Students from the Westwood school can benefit from the centres facilities, such as the astro turf pitches as the centre is open to Westwood school students until 5 p.m., when it is then handed over to the public. In 2008, The Westwood School gained a 'Trust' school status with the Local Authority, Warwick University, Coventry Sports Foundation and a local ICT company. The school recently gained The BECTA ICT Mark in recognition of its use of ICT in teaching and learning (the only school in Coventry to have gained this award). The school was previously known as Alderman Callow School and Community College, built to serve the nearby Canley housing estate; however the estate was never completed to its original anticipated size, meaning the school has always had a significantly smaller intake than other schools in Coventry. The Westwood Academy girls and boys basketball teams have won many local and regional accolades.

Whitley Academy

Whitley Academy (formerly Whitley Abbey Community School) is an academy school in Whitley, Coventry, England. The school was rebuilt and opened on 13 October 2000, replacing the former Whitley Abbey Comprehensive School built in the 1950s, which was one of the first comprehensive schools in Coventry. In July 2007, Whitley Abbey Community School gained specialist status in Business and Enterprise and was renamed Whitley Abbey Business and Enterprise College. On 1 July 2011 Whitley Abbey Business and Enterprise College became an Academy and was renamed to 'Whitley Academy'. The new academy was formally opened on 13 March 2012 by the Princess Royal. and is also part of the RSA

Shri Sidhi Vinayagar Temple

Shri Sidhi Vinayagar Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to the Elephant God Ganesha. It opened in 2011. The temple premises has idols of Ganesha, Murugan, Shiva, Durga, Bhairava and Navagrahas. A new bigger temple is being constructed in the same premises which includes various Hindu Gods. It is situated in George Eliot Road, off Foleshill Road, Coventry CV1 4HT and is easily reachable by the local buses. Daily Poojas are performed. Coventry pillaiyar is yet another name for Coventry Shri Sidhi Vinayagar Devasthanam situated in the heart of England. The temple was founded by local devotees who is very much love with Lord Ganesha. The annual festival of the Temple is conducted every year beginning with flag hoisting and continued for 10 days. Highlight of this annual event is chariots festival where Lord Ganesha is taken on a beautifully decorated cart pulled by devotees around designated streets of Coventry. The Hindhu Art College, a wing of Temple Devasthanam, conducts a regular art and Language classes. They also host various community cultural events and attract all communities.

Bulls Head Ground

Bulls Head Ground is a cricket ground in Coventry, West Midlands. The first recorded match on the ground was in 1848, when Coventry played an All-England Eleven. It hosted its first first-class match in 1903, which was between Warwickshire and the Gentlemen of Philadelphia. From 1909 to 1919, the ground played host to 12 first-class matches. First-class cricket returned to the Bulls Head in 1990, and from 1990 to 1992 it hosted a further 3 first-class matches, the last of which was between Warwickshire and Middlesex. The ground has also hosted List-A matches, the first of which was between the Warwickshire Cricket Board and the Leicestershire Cricket Board in the 2001 Cheltenham Gloucester Trophy. The ground has held 2 further List-A matches, between the Warwickshire Cricket Board and Leciestershire in the 2002 Cheltenham Gloucester Trophy and between the Board and Herefordshire in the 1st round of the 2003 Cheltenham Gloucester Trophy which was held in 2002. Additionally, between 1961 and 2009, the ground has played host to a number of Warwickshire Second XI matches in the Second XI Championship and Second XI Trophy, hosting a combined total of 32 Second XI matches. The Bulls Head has also hosted ICC Trophy matches, starting in the 1979 ICC Trophy when it held a single match which was contested between Argentina and East Africa and in the 1986 ICC Trophy when it hosted a single match between Bangladesh and East Africa. In local domestic cricket, the Bulls Head is the home venue of Coventry and North Warwickshire Cricket Club who played in the Birmingham and District Premier League Division One.

The Biggin Hall Hotel is a Grade II listed public house at 214 Binley Road, Coventry, CV3 1HG. It was built in 1921-23 for Marston, Thompson & Evershed, and the architect was T. F. Tickner. It was Grade II listed in 2015 by Historic England.

Collections can be:
- Public (Anyone can add attractions to your collection)
- Shared (Only yourself and Gurus you nominate can add content)
- Private (The collection will only be visible to yourself)

Showcase local attractions that you endorse
Clubs
Showcase attractions that members have created (eg. local historical society)
Special Interest
If GuRoute does not have a category for your special interest you add your attractions to your own collection instead
