St Stephen's Hull

St Stephens shopping centre, Hull opened on 20 September 2007 and today it attracts more than 10 million visitors a year. The shopping centre is a 40-acre brownfield site development in the city centre of Kingston upon Hull, England. It cost £200 million to build and was a key development in the resurgence of Hull as the centre of East Yorkshire culture and shopping. It is home to 12.8 acres of retail and leisure space and incorporates retail outlets, cafés, bars, fitness club, restaurants, a cinema and an award-winning multi-storey car park. Adjacent to St Stephen’s is the Albermarle Music Centre, Hull Truck Theatre and a hotel. Its shops include Superdry, Next, USC, HM, Zara, Build-A-Bear Workshop, Peacocks, TK Maxx, Topshop, Topman, The Body Shop, New Look, Hugh Rice the Jewellers and The Entertainer, and many more, with a large Tesco Extra, located at the rear of the complex being its anchor store and one of the largest in the country. The complex also contains restaurants such as Nandos, Prezzo, Handmade Burger, The Real China, Wok and Go and Starbucks, as well as a REEL cinema. St Stephen’s was one of most significant and eagerly anticipated regeneration projects in Hull’s modern history, forming part of a 15 year, £2 billion city centre masterplan, which once complete will rejuvenate six geographical areas, including three prime waterfront sites containing a mix of corporate headquarters, restaurants, attractions, boutique hotels, luxury apartments and Hull’s own World Trade Centre. In 2011, the owner of St Stephen’s, British Land, launched its first Community Charter making ten commitments to the local area. St Stephen’s shopping centre has almost erased its carbon footprint. In July 2011, St Stephen’s succeeded in sending none of its waste to landfill, creating one of the most environmentally friendly businesses in the region. Its newly introduced zero-to-landfill policy means 100 percent of its waste will be recycled or incinerated for energy recovery, with all its non-recyclables being sent to an energy recovery facility site where it is burned and reused for energy. The shopping centre has two electric car charging sockets in its car park; the first charging points to be installed in the East Riding of Yorkshire. In 2011, St Stephen’s was the winner of the British Land CSR awards in the Water Reduction category. A new transport hub Hull Paragon Interchange has also been built adjacent to St Stephens, incorporating Hulls renovated Paragon railway station. It incorporates a new bus station, catering and retail units. A new 440 seat theatre has been completed for Hull Truck Theatre as part of the development. Another part of the development is The Albermarle Music Centre, which was built at the expense of £3 million for the Hull Music Service as a centre where its youth orchestras, ensembles and bands can rehearse and practice, as well as being a new venue for other events and concerts.

Hull Paragon Interchange

Hull Paragon Interchange is an integrated rail and bus station in the city centre of Kingston upon Hull, England. The G.T. Andrews designed Paragon Station and the adjoining Station Hotel opened in 1847 as the new Hull terminus for the growing traffic of the York and North Midland leased to the Hull and Selby Railway . As well as trains to the west the station was the terminus of the Y&NMR and H&S railway's Hull to Scarborough Line. From the 1860s the station also became the terminus of the Hull and Holderness and Hull and Hornsea railways. At the beginning of the 20th century the North Eastern Railway expanded the trainshed and station to the designs William Bell, installing the present five arched span platform roof. In 1962 a modernist office block Paragon House was installed above the station main entrance, replacing a 1900s iron canopy; the offices were initially used as regional headquarters for British Rail. A bus station was erected adjacent to the north of the station in the mid 1930s. In the early 2000s plans for an integrated bus and rail station were made, as part of a larger development including a shopping centre; St Stephen's shopping centre, a hotel, housing, and music and theatre facilities. The new station, named "Paragon Interchange" opened in September 2007, integrating the city's railway and bus stations under William Bell's 1900s trainshed. As of April 2016, the rail station is operated by TransPennine Express, which provides train services along with Northern, Hull Trains and Virgin Trains East Coast.

St. George's Hotel

The Saint George's Hotel, Hull, is a public house located in a residential area in the west of the city of Kingston upon Hull. Known locally as simply 'The George', the pub has seen many licencees come and go since it opened, yet two most memorable landladies were the formidable Clarice Mack, and local entertainer Bobby Mandrell, who was dubbed as "Hull's Most Glamourous Landlady" this being a reference to Bobby Mandrell's career as a female impersonator. Whilst under the glamorous eye of Bobby Mandrell, the pub saw a sharp rise in popularity with the lounge full to capacity Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights of the week. A quiz night was hosted every Thursday in the lounge, with novelty camp prizes to be won. Friday night's would see Bobby and resident drag dj Krystal take to the stage as comedy duo 'Heirs and Graces', whilst Sunday night would host out-of-town drag acts on stage such as Lee Starr, Damaged Goods, French-born Etienne. Saturday night, however, was the icing on the cake as Bobby Mandrell took to the stage with his trademark glitzy show, which featured a range of costume changes, comedy sketches, playful banter with the audience and would also close the show with a variety of audience participation sing-along songs. During the stewardship of Bobby Mandrell, a small group of regular customers got together to form an amateur act, called The Saint George's Ladyboyz, who performed a variety of fast paced routines, ballads, comedy sketches and numerous audience participation sketches. The shows were performed once a month and the fee was donated by the act to a number of local charities. Although there was something of a revolving door to the group's personnel, the act remained popular and lasted for eighteen months, steadily gaining in confidence, experience and professionalism. As of July 2013 the St George's Hotel is closed, and for sale.

Where is this?

GuRoute likes to place attractions inside other attractions. So, maybe it's in a city, or maybe it's inside a particular park in that city. Maybe your attraction is a huge park that spans half the county, or multiple counties.

Determining where this attraction is gives it context - if it's in a park, you'll be able to see it alongside all the other attractions in that park. And that helps define the park.

GuRoute will automatically calculate a parent region for this attraction. You can change it if there is something more appropriate.
