Spode Museum

The Spode Museum is based in Stoke-on-Trent, England, where Josiah Spode, one of the great names of the Industrial Revolution, established his pottery business in 1774. His great achievements include the formulation of Bone China, which became the standard for all English chinawares, and the development and perfection of underglaze transfer printing on earthenwares, which enabled mass-production of attractively decorated ceramic items on a scale never previously achieved. By the early 1820s, his factory, now managed by his son Josiah Spode II and his business partner William Copeland, had become the largest in Stoke, employing some 2,000 workers and boasting 22 bottle ovens. Spode’s factory was in continuous production from 1774 to 2008, when it finally closed . The Spode factory occupied some ninety buildings on a nine acre site and such was the amount of space available that over the years many thousands of items that might otherwise have been thrown out were simply put into store. Consequently, over the two centuries when the factory was operational, a massive quantity of papers and objects was accumulated. In 1987 the Spode company, recognising the importance and uniqueness of its archive and collection, established the Spode Museum Trust, an independent charitable body, to take over the entire collection. This step was taken to protect the collection in perpetuity irrespective of whatever economic misfortunes the Spode company might suffer in the future. The Spode Museum collection includes a ceramics collection representing 200 years of Spode manufacture, ranging from spectacular pieces made for Royalty, the Great Exhibitions and the very rich to simple domestic wares. This collection is recognised as the largest and most wide-ranging single collection of Spode wares in the world. It also includes a “paper” archive of some ¼ million documents and early photographs, of which the most important are the 70,000 hand-painted watercolour images of every pattern produced since around 1800. In addition, some 25,000 engraved copper plates, used as the basis for printed wares, dating back from the 1790s and recognised to be the largest collection of its type in the world. There is also a collection of antique potters’ tools and machinery, some dating back before 1800 Since 2008, most of the collection has been in storage, but with the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund, in 2012 the Spode Museum Trust opened the Spode Works Visitor Centre in part of the historic Spode factory.

Ceramica

For the moth genus, see Ceramica . Ceramica was a museum in Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent, which explored the history of the areas pottery industry. It was located in the former Burslem Town Hall. Exhibits included displays about ceramics manufacturers Wade Ceramics, Royal Doulton, Sadlers, Dudson, Steelite, Royal Stafford, Moorland, Burleigh Pottery, Moorcroft and Cobridge Stoneware. There were interactive displays and video presentations for children on ceramic history and local history. The museum was set up using National Lottery money from the Millennium Commission. In March 2011 the museum closed after its Stoke-on-Trent City Council funding was withdrawn, due to government funding cuts. Some of the exhibits were transferred to other locations and the future of Burslem town hall is being reviewed.

Gladstone Pottery Museum

The Gladstone Pottery Museum is a working museum of a medium sized coal-fired pottery, typical of those once common in the North Staffordshire area of England from the time of the industrial revolution in the 18th century to the mid 20th century. It is a grade II* listed building. The museum is located in Longton, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire. It is also included in one of the regional routes of the European Route of Industrial Heritage. Despite the name of the museum, it is a complex of buildings from two works, the Gladstone and the Roslyn. The protected features include the kilns. As there are less than 50 surviving bottle ovens in Stoke-on-Trent, the museums kilns along with others in the Longton conservation area represent a significant proportion of the national stock of the structures.

Bethesda Methodist Chapel

Bethesda Methodist Chapel is a disused Methodist chapel, in Hanley, Staffordshire, England. Once one of the largest Nonconformist chapels outside London, the building has been known as the "Cathedral of the Potteries", being "one of the largest and most ornate Methodist town chapels surviving in the UK". The first Methodist chapel on the site was built by the Methodist New Connexion in the late 18th century. Finding the building too small for their growing membership, the congregation replaced it with the current building in 1819, to the designs of a local amateur architect. The chapel is built over two stories and is in the Italianate style, with further work to expand the building completed in 1859 and 1887. It became a Grade II* listed building in 1972. By the end of the 20th century, the building had deteriorated and the congregation had decreased considerably; it was closed for active worship in 1985. After passing through a number of owners, it was acquired by the Historic Chapels Trust in 2002 and is undergoing an extensive restoration scheme.

Longton Cricket Club Ground

Longton Cricket Club Ground is a cricket ground in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire. The first recorded match on the ground was in 1954, when Staffordshire played Northumberland in the grounds first Minor Counties Championship match. From 1954 to present, the ground has hosted 40 Minor Counties Championship matches and 7 MCCA Knockout Trophy matches. A combined Minor Counties team has used the ground for 4 first-class matches, the first of which came in 1959 against the touring Indians. The last first-class match held on the ground came in 1972 and saw the Minor Counties play the touring Australians. The ground has held List-A matches. Staffordshire have played two List-A matches at the ground against Glamorgan in the 1971 Gillette Cup and Leicestershire in the 1975 Gillette Cup. Minor Counties North played a single List-A match at the ground in the 1975 Benson and Hedges Cup against Lancashire. Minor Counties East used the ground for a single List-A match against Northamptonshire in the 1976 Benson and Hedges Cup. In local domestic cricket, Longton Cricket Club Ground is the home ground of Longton Cricket Club who play in the North Staffordshire and South Cheshire League.

Stoke on Trent

Stoke-on-Trent (; often abbreviated to Stoke) is a city in Staffordshire, England, with an area of 36 square miles (93 km2). Together with the neighbouring boroughs of Newcastle-under-Lyme and Staffordshire Moorlands, it is part of North Staffordshire, which, in 2011, had a population of 469,000. Stoke is polycentric, having been formed by a federation of six towns in the early 20th century. It took its name from Stoke-upon-Trent, where the town hall and the railway station are located. Hanley is the primary commercial centre. The four other towns are Burslem, Tunstall, Longton and Fenton. Stoke-on-Trent is the home of the pottery industry in England and is commonly known as the Potteries. Formerly a primarily industrial conurbation, it is now a centre for service industries and distribution centres.

Holden Viaduct

Holden Viaduct, in Sneyd Green, Stoke-on-Trent, carries the A5272, here called Hanley Road. It spans a cutting through which runs Leek New Road, the A53. On each side of the viaduct is a ramp leading down to the A53. Although it is officially a viaduct, it is quite short and has only one span. It is usually known as "Holden Bridge". It is a notable feature for motorists travelling along Leek New Road, which is perfectly straight here. A plaque on the balustrade reads: City of Stoke-on-Trent, Holden Viaduct. This bridge was opened by Mrs J W Oakes on the 14th July 1930, and was erected to replace the original structure built in 1844. Major J Kent DSO Chairman, Councillor J W Oakes Vice-Chairman, Highways Committee. A short way north-east along Leek New Road, at the junction with Berwick Road, there was until recently a pub called The Holden Bridge; it closed in 2007, and has since been demolished.

The Villas

The Villas, Stokeville, is an estate of 24 Victorian houses in Stoke-upon-Trent, England. Originally a distinct settlement set in green fields, it now merges with the late 19th- and early 20th-century suburban sprawl along London Road below Penkhull village on the outskirts of Stoke-on-Trent and within the ward of Stoke and Trent Vale. Most dating from 1851-55, The Villas was designed by local architect Charles Lynam, who became a prominent architect in Staffordshire, building the Minton Hollins tileworks, for example. In designing The Villas, he chose an Italianate style similar to other Staffordshire buildings, such as Trentham Hall and Alton railway station. In June 1850, a number of prominent inhabitants of Stoke formed "The Stokeville Building Society". The purpose of the building society was to provide the means and the financial capability for its members to erect, and ultimately own, houses on copyhold land outside the town of Stoke-upon-Trent. The land, 'Big Meadow and Barker's Meadow', containing seven acres, two rods and 18 perches, belonged to the Reverend Thomas Minton, brother of Herbert Minton and son of the founder of Thomas Minton and Sons , pottery manufacturer of Stoke, and was finally purchased for £1,582 on 3 May 1859.
