Top Attractions in Vaud

Lausanne

Lausanne is a city in the French-speaking part of Switzerland, and the capital of the canton of Vaud. The city is situated on the shores of Lake Geneva . It faces the French town of Évian-les-Bains, with the Jura mountains to its north-west. Lausanne is located 62 kilometres northeast of Geneva. Lausanne has a population of 139,390, making it the fourth largest city in Switzerland, with the entire agglomeration area having 402,900 inhabitants . The metropolitan area of Lausanne-Geneva was over 1.2 million inhabitants in 2000. Lausanne is a focus of international sport, hosting the International Olympic Committee (which recognizes the city as the "Olympic Capital" since 1994), the Court of Arbitration for Sport and some 55 international sport associations. It lies in a noted wine-growing region. The city has a 28-station metro system, making it the smallest city in the world to have a rapid transit system.

Caux

Caux is a small village in the Canton of Vaud, Switzerland which is part of the Montreux municipality. It looks out over Lake Geneva from an altitude of 1000 meters. Overlooked by the Rochers de Naye summit , the Caux area was traditionally used only by cattle farmers. Late in the 19th century, local riviera hotels owners from Montreux and Territet became aware of the touristic potential of the Caux Mount. Simples inns first, then the massive Caux Grand-Hôtel , and finally, the spectacular Caux Palace Hotel , masterpiece of Swiss architect Eugène Jost, gave Caux an international status, attracting the wealthiest and most famous guests: Empress Sissi of Austria-Hungary, Lord Robert Baden-Powell, Sacha Guitry, Edgar Wallace, prince Ibn Saud, future king of Saudi Arabia, John D. Rockefeller and the maharajah of Baroda, just to name a few. The Great War will however kill prematurely the Caux luxury hotels. In spite of the efforts of the hotels owners the golden years of the Belle Epoque will never return and the 1929 economic crisis and WWII will bring all hotels to final bankruptcy. During World War II, the hotels fell into disrepair and were used to house civilian refugees and interned escaped Allied prisoners of war. Finally some 1,600 Jews from the Kasztner train from Budapest found refuge there [2]. In 1946 the former Caux Palace Hotel was purchased and renovated by the Moral Re-Armament organization , for use as an international conference centre to work on the reconciliation of European peoples. They held many workshops and brought together people at many levels of government and society. The historians Douglas Johnston and Cynthia Sampson describe the MRA work as "important contribution to one of the greatest achievements in the entire record of modern statecraft: the astonishingly rapid Franco-German reconciliation after 1945.". The former Caux-Palace Hotel is still today the home of Initiatives of Change's conference centre, which can accommodate up to 450 people. The building is operated as a hotel school for much of the year, the Swiss Hotel Management School [3], though it still houses the Initiatives of Change annual conferences each summer. The Caux Palace Hotel building can be seen from Montreux and the surrounding area; it is said to have been the inspiration for the castle in Disney's animated movie, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. There is a small historical exhibition that is open to the public. Caux also has two churches, both built in the early 20th century: The Protestant chapel, originally Anglican , features an audacious timber frame, English style stained-glass windows (representing the deeds of the angels in the Bible), and a series of carved woods : angels on the side and foremost a singular boxwood altarpiece, representing a crucifixion in three dimensions, originating from Bruges. The catholic chapel (1907), immediately visible upon arrival, a site worth visiting for its peaceful atmosphere. Caux has also become famous through sport: The first bobsleigh world championship was organised in Caux in 1930. Since the first years of tourism in Caux, Caux has been equipped with an ice ring, allowing the public to skate on natural ice, weather permitting. Alpine and cross-country ski are easily practised around Caux. In the summer, numerous paths can bring ramblers from Caux to Rochers de Naye, the Sonchaux hamlet, the Col de Jaman (Jaman pass) and the Dent de Jaman. The village of Caux [4] which is reacheable by train from Montreux is therefore known as a destination for tourists en route to the Rochers de Naye and the Col de Jaman. This is a popular area for birdwatchers, as it lies along a major migration flyway for birds heading south in the autumn.

Peak Walk

Peak Walk is a pedestrian suspension bridge linking two mountain peaks in the Swiss Alps. It is situated in the Diablerets massif of the Bernese Alps in the canton of Vaud, and connects the peak of Scex Rouge with another peak. On the other peak is the viewpoint of the Glacier 3000 company. Scex Rouge is about 5 m higher than Glacier 3000s viewpoint. Peak Walk is the worlds first suspension bridge which connects two mountain peaks. The bridge, which has been built by the firm Seiler AG in Bönigen, is 107 m long, 0.8 m wide and 1.2 m high with a 15% slope. It has four pieces of key supporting steel cables with a 120 tonne loading capacity. Peak Walk is anchored by 20 pieces in the rock. It was built as a tourist attraction in Europe, and it costs 1.8 million franc . It is expected that the current number of summertime visitors of around 50,000 will double as a result of the new bridge. Three hundred people could be accommodated at a time, although the number would be reduced to 150 to ensure greater comfort. The designers took the extreme conditions into account, with winds of about 200 km/h . Mountains that can be seen from the bridge include Mont Blanc, the Matterhorn, Mönch, Jungfrau and Eiger, and the bridge has a partial glass floor that afford views down through it. In addition, the bridge became the worlds second highest suspension bridge after the Titlis Cliff Walk, which is 3,000 m above sea level. The thin air at high altitudes and poor weather hampered construction work, and summer storms delayed the transportation of construction materials.

Allaman Castle

Allaman Castle has its origins in the 11/12th Century but the main components were built by Louis, Duke of Savoy Count de Vaud, in 1253. It is listed in the Grade 1 Swiss Inventory of Cultural Property of National and Regional Significance. The wealthy Genevan philanthropist Count Jean-Jacques de Sellon, who owned the property until 1839, gave accommodation at the castle to, amongst many others, such political refugees as Napoleons brother Joseph Bonaparte, Empress Joséphine de Beauharnais, the Duke of Bassano, the Count Camille Cavour, Voltaire as well as to Franz Liszt and George Sand. In 1820 de Sellon founded the Society of Peace, forerunner of the League of Nations and the United Nations Organization and in 1830 the First International Peace Summit was held in Château dAllaman]. Since then, the Castle has also been referred to "The Castle of Peace". De Sellon was also instrumental in the abolition of the death penalty in Switzerland. The Castle of Allaman is one of the largest private properties of Switzerland. The estate covers over 330,000 square metres and offers some 6,200 m2 of living space. The estate is surrounded by private forests, parks, gardens and Grand Cru vine yards. Recently completely restored and transformed, the Castle is owned by a Swiss family.

Maison d'Ailleurs

The Maison dAilleurs is a museum of science fiction, utopia and extraordinary journeys in Yverdon-les-Bains . It is a non-profit foundation functioning both as a public museum and a specialized research center. The archives of the museum contain around 70,000 documents related to science fiction or utopia, including some very old or unique pieces. The collections of the museum are used for iconographic purposes or research . The Maison dAilleurs thus represents an important research and documentation center. In parallel, the museum presents from two to three temporary exhibitions per year, around the main themes of science fiction and its artists: H. R. Giger, John Howe, James Gurney, Caza, Jean Fontaine, etc.. The exhibitions favour diversity and openness towards the world, in order to reach a broad audience. The museum also offers itinerary exhibitions and regularly presents its work in Switzerland and abroad. Half a dozen exhibitions are rented per year on average. The Maison dAilleurs is the only public institution of its kind in the world. It has the status of a non-profit foundation, and therefore isnt directly a communal museum. The Foundation manages the collections owned by the city of Yverdon-les-Bains in the building it has been provided with. Five to seven members of the Foundation board are chosen by the municipality of Yverdon-les-Bains, while two others come from the association Amis de la Maison dAilleurs .
