State Museum of Natural History Stuttgart

The State Museum of Natural History Stuttgart, abbreviated SMNS, is one of the two state of Baden-Württembergs natural history museums. Together with the State Museum of Natural History Karlsruhe it is one of the most important repositories for state-owned natural history collections. Exhibitions are shown in two buildings, both situated in the Rosenstein park in Stuttgart: the Löwentor Museum houses the paleontology and geology exhibitions, while the Museum Rosenstein in Rosenstein Palace focuses on biology and natural history. Every year, the SMNS is visited by about 110,000 people.

Castle Solitude

Castle Solitude in Stuttgart, Germany, was built as a hunting lodge between 1764 and 1769 under Duke Karl Eugen of Württemberg. It is not a true castle, but rather a rococo palace. Observation Tower Burgholzhof

The Observation Tower Burgholzhof in Burgholzhof, since 1998 a separate community within Bad Cannstatt in Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, is an 1891 brick observation tower constructed by the Cannstatt municipal architect Friedrich Keppler on behalf of the Verschönerungsverein Cannstatt e. V., in the style of a Roman tower, at an elevation of 359 meters above sea level, at 9°1141 east and 48°4908" north. It was formally opened on 19 September 1891 in the presence of the then Crown-Prince Wilhelm of Württemberg. It has extensive views over East Stuttgart, Bad Cannstatt and along the Neckar valley as far as Esslingen am Neckar. During World War II the tower was used by anti-aircraft spotter personnel keeping a look-out for Allied bomber attacks. Burgholzhof observation tower was restored in 1987/88, on the initiative of the local amenity group Pro Bad Cannstatt, and since then has again been accessible during the summer . Nearby, to the north of the tower, is a point-to-point radio tower used for military purposes, at 48°4911 north. The tower, in an anthropomorphic form known as "Burgi", is the mascot of the new community of Burgholzhof- constructed on land returned by the US Army from adjacent Robinson Barracks after closure of the Stuttgart main PX.

Stuttgart Cathedral

Stuttgart Spring Festival

Stuttgart Spring Festival is an annual fair that takes place in the German city of Stuttgart between the middle of April and the beginning of May. The festival takes place on the Cannstatter Wasen, traditional fairgrounds in Stuttgart's Bad Cannstatt district. It is slightly smaller than the festival in the autumn (and therefore occasionally also called the "small Wasen"), but it is the largest spring festival in Europe. Like the autumn fair, the Frühlingsfest offers a variety of fairground attractions. The tallest attraction is the 47 metre Ferris wheel and the fair almost invariably features a major roller coaster. The Frühlingsfest starts on a Saturday with the traditional opening of a beer barrel by the Stuttgart mayor. The Fruit Column, a tall wooden structure decorated with fruits, was introduced to the Stuttgarter Frühlingsfest in 1995. Originally it was only present at the autumn Volksfest but in 1995 it was left to stand on the festival site all year round. However, in recent years, this practice was changed and once again the column began to be dismantled in the autumn of each year, leaving just the base. This carries a large can during the Stuttgarter Frühlingsfest.

Standseilbahn Stuttgart

The Standseilbahn Stuttgart or Stuttgart Cable Car is a funicular railway in the city of Stuttgart, Germany. The line links the Südheimer Platz valley station with the Stuttgart Degerloch forest cemetery in the south quarters of Heslach. Operated by Stuttgarter Straßenbahnen AG , it was opened on 30 October 1929 to facilitate visitors to the forest cemetery which is 90 metres above Stuttgart Heslach. At Südheimer Platz, the funicular connects to Stuttgart Stadtbahn lines U1 and U14.

New Palace

The New Palace is a building which stands on the south edge of Schlossplatz, the central square in Stuttgart, Germany. The castle is built in late Baroque style. From 1746 to 1797 and from 1805 to 1807, it served as a residence of the kings of Württemberg. . The palace stands adjacent to the Old Castle. The castle was almost destroyed by Allied bombing during World War II and was reconstructed between 1958 and 1964. During this time most of the inside of the castle was also restored and the building was used by the Baden-Württemberg State Parliament. Today it is used by the State Ministries of Finance and Education. Public tours of the building are only permitted by special arrangement. Schlossplatz is adjacent to two other popular squares in Stuttgart: Karlsplatz to the south and Schillerplatz to the south west. The former German President, Richard von Weizsäcker was born in the New Castle on April 15, 1920.

Old Castle

The Old Castle is located in the centre of Stuttgart, the capital of the German State of Baden-Württemberg. It dates back to the 10th century. The first castle dated back to around 950 when Stuttgart was a settlement for breeding horses; it was built to guard the Stutengarten of the stud. In the 14th century it became the residence of the Counts of Württemberg and the court chamber of the House of Württemberg. In the 16th century dukes Christopher and Ludwig ordered it to be converted into a Renaissance palace or schloss; work which was carried out from 1553 to 1578. It was at this time that the equestrian staircase was built by Blasius Berwart. In 1562 the palace church was consecrated and the conference hall furnished. The moats around the castle were filled in during the 18th century. In 1931, the castle was severely damaged by a fire and before it could be reconstructed it was damaged by bombing in the Second World War. The castle was finally renovated in 1969. Today the Old Castle is home to the Württemberg State Museum. King Charles I of Württemberg and his wife Olga are buried beneath the castle church. The inner courtyard houses a monument to Eberhard I. The Old Castle stands adjacent to its replacement, the New Castle, which was built in the late 18th century. On the Karlsplatz side of the Old Castle is a museum dedicated to the memory of Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg a former resident of Stuttgart who attempted to assassinate Adolf Hitler on 20 July 1944.

Rosenstein Castle

Rosenstein Castle in the Bad Cannstatt district of Stuttgart, Germany was built between 1822 and 1830 by the court builder Giovanni Salucci in the classical style for King Wilhelm I. The palace stands in Rosenstein Park on a height overlooking the Neckar river valley. Formerly called the Kahlenstein, the hill was renamed Rosenstein, and a rose garden was planted to the south-east of the palace. Today, Schloss Rosenstein houses that part of State Museum of Natural History Stuttgart dealing with extant lifeforms.

Wilhelm Palais

The Wilhelmspalais is a Palace located on the Charlottenplatz in Stuttgart-Mitte. It was the living quarters of the last Württemberg King Wilhelm II. It was destroyed during World War II and between 1961 and 1965 reconstructed in modern style. Nowadays, the central library of the Stadtbücherei Stuttgart is situated in this building.

Wirtemberg Castle

Wirtemberg Castle was the ancestral castle of the rulers of Württemberg on the Württemberg mountain, located 411 m above sea level in the current municipality of Rotenberg in Stuttgart, between Bad Cannstatt and Esslingen am Neckar. Between 1080 and 1819 three castles with this name existed at the location. The castle was replaced by the classical Württemberg Mausoleum in 1820-24.

Linden Museum

The Linden Museum is an ethnological museum located in Stuttgart, Germany. The museum traces its origins to the collection of objects amassed by the Verein für Handelsgeographie in the 19th century. The namesake of the museum is Karl Graf von Linden who, as president of the Stuttgart Verein für Handelsgeographie, took an interest in assembling and organizing the collection, and invited explorers of the caliber of Sven Hedin and Roald Amundsen to Stuttgart. In 1911, the collection was established as a private museum and its current building was constructed. After suffering extensive damage during World War II, the building was restored in the 1950s and the municipality became its custodian. Since 1973, the museum has been jointly administrated by the city of Stuttgart and the state of Baden-Württemberg.

Hegel House

The Hegel House is a museum in Stuttgart, Germany, located in the house where the philosopher Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel was born. Born in 1770, Hegel lived in Stuttgart for the first 18 years of his life; he died in Berlin in 1831. The Hegel House is on Eberhardstraße, and dates from the 16th century. The ground floor contains an exhibition about Stuttgart during Hegels lifetime. Another exhibition is devoted to Hegels life story, and includes his famous beret and his Stammbuch . A third room contains a text collage of key quotations from Hegel, and various editions of his works in different languages.

Killesberg Railway

The Killesberg Railway is a miniature railway in the Killesberg Park in Stuttgart, Germany. Opened with the park in 1939, the 15 in gauge track travels in a 2,294.35-metre loop around the park. Diesel locomotives pull trains around the park daily during the summer months whilst steam locomotives are used for special occasions. The park now maintains four locomotives, of which two are powered by diesel and two by steam. Blitzschwoab is the oldest of the two diesel engines, manufactured in 1950. Schwoabapfeil was manufactured in 1992. The steam engines Tazzelwurm and Springerle were delivered to the park in 1950 to replace the two that originally operated on the line until they were removed to Leipzig during World War II. The Killesbergbahn was formerly operated by the Stuttgart Fair company and today by a promotion association.

Landesmuseum Württemberg

The Landesmuseum Württemberg is the main historical museum of the Württemberg part of the German state of Baden-Württemberg. It emerged from the 16th-century “Kunstkammer” of the dukes, later kings, of Württemberg who resided in Stuttgart. As a museum it was founded in 1869 by King William I. The museums main location is the Old Castle in Stuttgart. The nearby granary and the cellar of the New Castle also contain parts of the collections as well as Waldenbuch Castle outside of Stuttgart. The collections are grouped into three divisions: archeology: Paleolithic, Neolithic, Bronze Age, Iron Age, antiquity, Romans in Württemberg, early Middle Ages, antique glass, and the Roman lapidarium history of art and cultural history: modern era glass, Württemberg crown jewels, medieval art, art chamber of the Württemberg rulers, modern glass painting, musical instruments, clocks and scientific instruments folklore : labor, belief and piety, graphic design, clothing, merchandise, culture of living. Apart from these collections the museum regularly features special exhibitions. The museum presents a whole range of archeological treasures and a notable collection of medieval art. It also includes the inventories of the former army and manufacturing museums. Some of the most valuable possessions of the museum were already acquired by the dukes for their art chamber: two of only four preserved Aztec feather shields from before 1521 and the oldest preserved card game, about 1430, richly decorated and expensive already at the time of production. Exhibits of local origin include a celestial globe of 1493 by Johannes Stöffler, an 11-digit mechanical calculator of 1774 by Philipp Matthäus Hahn, first to build functional calculators to Gottfried Leibniz design for all four arithmetic operations, and, less unique, but probably the museums most symbolic exhibit: the royal Württemberg crown of 1797. The museum today has a further seven branches throughout Württemberg referring to special topics: Schlossmuseum Aulendorf : old toys and art of the classicism period Schloss Urach : sleighs of state, 25 specimens, worlds biggest collection of this kind Museum für Kutschen, Chaisen, Karren, Hellenstein Castle, Heidenheim Deutsches Spielkartenmuseum, Leinfelden-Echterdingen: 15,000 card decks and 500,000 cards from seven centuries. The biggest public collection of playing cards in Europe Fashion museum, Ludwigsburg Palace Ceramics museum, Ludwigsburg Palace Dominican museum, Rottweil: archeological collection on arae flaviae, oldest town in Baden-Württemberg; medieval religious art collection; contemporary art collection of the Rottweil area Several other former branches now belong to the separate Baden-Württemberg State Archeological Museum, which has been founded in 1990 due to the ever increasing findings of archeological heritage in the state.

Wilhelma

Wilhelma , built as a royal palace, is now a 30-hectare zoo and botanical garden in the northern suburbs of Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. It is Europes only large combined zoological and botanical garden, and is home to over 8,000 animals representing more than 1,000 different species, as well as more than 5,000 species of plants. The upper section of the zoo includes an impressive stand of sequoia trees. The zoo immediately adjoins a public park to its west, laid out in the English landscape style of rolling grass and informal groups of trees. In landscape terms this perfectly complements the landscape of the zoo.

Württemberg Mausoleum

The Württemberg Mausoleum is a memorial in the Rotenberg part of Untertürkheim in Stuttgart, Germany. The mausoleum stands on the peak of Württemberg Hill at the westernmost end of Schurwald woods overlooking the Neckar river. The memorial was built for Catherine Pavlovna of Russia, the second wife of William I of Württemberg . The remains of William I and his daughter Maria Friederike Charlotte of Württemberg are also housed in the mausoleum.

Killesbergpark

The Killesbergpark is an urban public park of half a square kilometre in Stuttgart, Germany. It is just north of the state capital, where Killesberg is a quarter of the borough of Stuttgart-Nord . The park dates back to the horticultural show of 1939. Before the show, a large area of the park had been a quarry. It was transformed into a park with exhibition sites for the show, and has remained, hosting horticultural events on a regular basis, including the “Bundesgartenschau” and the IGA, both garden festivals. The Killesbergpark bordered for many years the citys fairgrounds. In 2007, Messe Stuttgart moved to new ground close to Stuttgart Airport. Every July the park hosts the popular Lichterfest Stuttgart. Thousands of lanterns are placed around the park, decorating the park for a variety of family activities throughout. After dark, there is a fireworks show accompanied by music. Visitors often bring blankets to sit on for the show.

It contains about 7,000 plant taxa in various groupings, including a systematic garden of about 5,000 taxa , a medicinal plant garden, and tropical and subtropical greenhouses containing about 1,200 taxa, including about 250 Begoniaceae species. Other collections include Gymnocalycium , Peperomia , Viscum , and Maranthes , as well as collections of useful plants and North American trees and shrubs.

Rosenstein Park

The Rosenstein Park in Stuttgart is the largest English garden in southwest Germany. It was created in the years 1824 to 1840 on the orders of King William I of Württemberg after plans of his gardener Johann Bosch on the former Kahlenstein area. From 1817 to 1818 King William I had purchased all land on the Kahlenstein from the citizens of Cannstatt. In the middle of the park the Rosenstein Palace was built from 1822 to 1830. The Wilhelma zoo and the State Museum of Natural History Stuttgart are also located in the park. The Löwentor at the upper park entrance was built by Giovanni Salucci. The Rosensteintunnel is a railway tunnel beneath the park. Today the park is owned by the State of Baden-Württemberg and preserved as a historical monument. In conjunction with the Schlossgarten, the Leibfried Garden, the Wartberg and the Killesbergpark it forms Stuttgarts „Green U“. Because of the ban on hunting within the park it boasts 98.9 hares per 100 ha, the highest concentration of hares in Germany.

Hanns-Martin-Schleyer-Halle

Hanns-Martin-Schleyer-Halle is an indoor sporting and concert arena located in Stuttgart, Germany. The capacity of the arena is 15,500 people. The venue was built in 1983 and is named for Hanns Martin Schleyer, a German employer representative, and former Nazi SS officer, who was kidnapped and killed by the terrorist group Red Army Faction. It has a 265-metre track made of wood. The arena hosted the final phase of the 1985 European basketball championship. In tennis, the arena hosts some of the matches of Porsche Tennis Grand Prix, on a clay court designated as "Court 1". It also hosted the Stuttgart Masters when it was an ATP Super 9 event between 1996 and 2001. The arena is also used as a velodrome and was used as the host for the 2003 UCI Track Cycling World Championships. On July 2009 Elton John gave a sold out concert in the Schleyerhalle. Depeche Mode performed at the stadium seven times: the first one was on November 2, 1987 during their Music for the Masses Tour. The second one was on October 15, 1990 during their World Violation Tour. The third one was on June 25, 1993 during their Devotional Tour. The fourth one was on September 23, 1998 during their Singles Tour. The fifth one was on October 3, 2001 during their Exciter Tour. The sixth one was on March 9, 2006 during their Touring the Angel. The seventh one was on November 8, 2009 during their Tour of the Universe. The 2007 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships were held at the Hanns-Martin-Schleyer-Hall.

Porsche-Arena

Porsche Arena is a multi-purpose arena, located in Stuttgart, Germany. The seating capacity of the arena varies, from 5,100 to 8,000 people and it was opened in 2006, after 14 months of construction. The arena is part of a sport complex located in Stuttgart’s NeckarPark, situated between the Scharrena Stuttgart, Mercedes-Benz Arena and Hanns Martin Schleyer Halle. To fund the construction, costs had already been pre-construction sales of the name rights planned. Dr. Ing h.c. F. Porsche AG bought the name rights, for a ten million euro, for a term of 20 years. It is the venue for the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix, a WTA Tour event and also hosted some matches at the 2007 World Mens Handball Championship. Anton Hunger: "The tournament is now at home in Stuttgart. We knew we’d make mistakes at the first edition. But we didn’t promise too much last year and have eliminated almost all the mistakes in 2007. A total of more than 36,000 spectators were in the arena. The number was up on the previous year even though seating was slightly reduced to improve comfort."

Schlossplatz

Schlossplatz is the largest square in Stuttgart Mitte and home to the Neues Schloss which was built between 1746 and 1807. From its construction until the mid-1800s it was used as a military parade ground and not open to general public use. It stands next to two other popular squares in Stuttgart: Karlsplatz to the south and Schillerplatz to the south west. The Königstraße bisects the plaza from north to south. The Neues Schloss Palace and grounds have been public property since 1918. Along with much of Stuttgart Mitte, Neues Schloss was heavily damaged during the Allied Bombing of World War II and the building was restored from 1958-1964 with a modernized interior that houses the ministries of Culture and the Treasury for the government of Baden-Württemberg. Until the 1960s the King Street that bisects the plaza carried auto and truck traffic. Since that time the Stuttgart underground has built an underground station and tunnels were built to redirect traffic away from the plaza and Königstraße. The entire square was last fully renovated in 1977 to mark the staging of the Bundesgartenschau in Stuttgart. The lawns and flowerbeds were renewed in 2006 following the staging of the 2006 World Cup Finals.

Scharrena Stuttgart

The Scharrena Stuttgart is a multi-purpose hall in Stuttgart's Bad Cannstatt district. The hall is located on the fairgrounds Neckar Park, is the Mercedes-Benz Arena affiliated, under Unterthürkheimer Kurve (stand of Mercedes-Benz Arena. Their capacity is a maximum of 2,019 seats. Since April 2011, the Hall home ground of women's volleyball national league Smart Alliance Stuttgart.

Württemberg

The Württemberg is a hill on the territory of the German city of Stuttgart, capital of Baden-Württemberg. Its peak lies above vineyards at 411 m above sea level, on the eastern edge of the Stuttgart cauldron valley, in the Rotenberg quarter of Stuttgart's district of Untertürkheim, overlooking the Neckar valley with the Daimler-Benz industrial plant and the Mercedes-Museum. It is homonymous to the name of the area and historic territory of Württemberg, which is now a part of the state of Baden-Württemberg.

Collections can be:
- Public (Anyone can add attractions to your collection)
- Shared (Only yourself and Gurus you nominate can add content)
- Private (The collection will only be visible to yourself)

Showcase local attractions that you endorse
Clubs
Showcase attractions that members have created (eg. local historical society)
Special Interest
If GuRoute does not have a category for your special interest you add your attractions to your own collection instead
