Exchange District

The Exchange District is a National Historic Site of Canada in the downtown area of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Just one block north of Portage and Main, the Exchange District comprises twenty city blocks and approximately 150 heritage buildings, and it is known for its intact early 20th century collection of warehouses, financial institutions, and early terra cotta clad skyscrapers.

Portage & Main

Downtown Winnipeg is centred on Portage Avenue and Main Street, and is bounded by the Assiniboine River on the south, Colony and Balmoral Streets on the west, Notre Dame Avenue, Princess Street, and Logan Avenue on the north, and the Red River on the east. It includes the Exchange District, Central Park, The Forks, and Winnipeg's Chinatown. The downtown area is roughly three square kilometres. Portage Avenue is the city's busiest thoroughfare. Winnipeg Square, the MTS Centre, Portage Place, and the flagship store of the Bay are all located on the downtown section of this street. Most of the downtown is operated by the downtown Winnipeg biz, The ED and CEO of the Biz is Stefano Grande. The biz offers a green team and a security team called the Watch. On Main Street are Winnipeg's City Hall, Union Station, and the Manitoba Centennial Centre, which includes the Manitoba Museum, the Planetarium, the Centennial Concert Hall and the Winnipeg Railway Museum. Although over 60,000 people work downtown, only 13,470 people actually live in the Downtown area. There are several residential projects under construction on Waterfront Drive and in the Exchange District, and the residential population of the area is projected to increase substantially in the next few years.

Ed Leith Cretaceous Menagerie

The Ed Leith Cretaceous Menagerie is a museum in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. The museum is housed in the atrium area of the Wallace Building at the University of Manitoba. It is educational, interactive and publicly accessible. The menagerie features complete skeletal replicas of four creatures. Three of the specimens are marine: a gigantic, vicious fish, the worlds largest sea turtle and an enormous, formidable mosasaur . Finally, an aggressive tyrannosaurid dinosaur represents the land creatures.

Robert B. Ferguson Museum of Mineralogy

The Robert B. Ferguson Museum of Mineralogy is a museum in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. It is located at the University of Manitoba in the Wallace Building. The museum got its start in 1918 by way of a donation from geologist Joseph Winthrop Spencer. His 1,100 mineral and rock specimen formed the basis of the early museum. The museum has grown over the years through various donations. Part of the collection is on display for the benefit of students. One sixth of the collection is displayed in the Wallace Building, and is arranged from the most chemically and structurally simple to progressively more complex. Many of the most attractive mineral specimens are on public display at the Ed Leith Cretaceous Menagerie.

Living Prairie Museum

The Living Prairie Museum is a 12 hectare tall grass prairie preserve located in Winnipeg, Manitoba. It was discovered in 1968 when a local sub-committee of the International Biological Program surveyed Manitoba for native prairie plant communities. Of more than 60 sites that were researched, only four were found uncultivated. Ironically, one of the largest undisturbed sites was discovered in a residential area of Winnipeg. Today a vestige of this original prairie community has been set aside as a City of Winnipeg Nature Park- Living Prairie Museum. LPM is home to over 160 species of prairie grasses and wildflowers, as well as a great array of prairie wildlife. In Manitoba only 1/20th of 1% of original tall grass prairie remains. The Living Prairie Museum is one of the few preserves of this once vast ecosystem. This museum is defined by the historical interpretation of the Tall Grass Prairie of the Winnipeg Region. The museum has an interpretative centre with displays on prairie history and ecology as well as an interactive art installation titled lost_landscape by Winnipeg artist Collin Zipp.

Saint Boniface Cathedral

Tin Can Cathedral

The Tin Can Cathedral was the first independent Ukrainian church in North America. It was the heart of the Seraphimite Church. Founded in Winnipeg, it had no affiliation with any church in Europe. Ukrainian immigrants began arriving in Canada in 1891 mainly from the Austro-Hungarian provinces, the regions of Bukovina and Galicia. The new arrivals from Bukovina were Eastern Orthodox, those from Galicia Eastern Catholic. In either case it was the Byzantine Rite with which they were familiar. By 1903 the Ukrainian immigrant population in Western Canada had become large enough to attract the attention of religious leaders, politicians, and educationalists.

Fort Garry Hotel

Manitoba Legislative Building

The Manitoba Legislative Building is the meeting place of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba, in central Winnipeg. It was originally named the Manitoba Parliament Building, not Legislative. The neoclassical building was completed in 1920 and stands seventy-seven metres tall . It was designed and built by Frank Worthington Simon and Henry Boddington III, along with other masons and many skilled craftsmen. The building is famous for the Golden Boy, a gold covered bronze statue based on the style of the Roman god Mercury, or the Greek god Hermes, at the top of the cupola, or domed ceiling. The Manitoba Legislative Building is open every day of the year for self-guided tours, and guided tours are available.

Manitoba Electrical Museum

Manitoba Electrical Museum and Education Centre is a museum in Winnipeg, Manitoba, dedicated to the electrical history of Manitoba. It is a volunteer organization run by retired members of Manitoba Hydro. The museum is housed in a converted electrical substation building. The museum is free to the public, open 1 4 Monday to Thursday and by appointment.

Ukrainian Cultural and Educational Centre

The Ukrainian Cultural and Educational Centre, is a museum, gallery, and library in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Oseredok was founded in 1944 by the Ukrainian National Federation of Canada as a museum, archives, library and art gallery. It is the largest Ukrainian cultural institution of its kind in Canada. The museum collects and preserves materials and artifacts including documents, ancient maps, rare books, film, photographs, items of folk art, pioneers tools, musical instruments, and regional folk costumes. The gallery exhibits work of Canadian and international Ukrainian artists. The library holds over 40,000 books and periodicals in Ukrainian and English including collections of children’s books, folklore, music, humanities and sciences, a rare book collection and reference materials. The museum is affiliated with the CMA, CHIN, and Virtual Museum of Canada.

Naval Museum of Manitoba

The Naval Museum of Manitoba is a museum in Winnipeg, Manitoba dedicated to the Royal Canadian Navy and its influence on Manitoba. The museum first opened in 1980 in the HMCS Chippawa building in Winnipeg. A new museum site is in the fundraising stage. The museum preserves the history of the navy through the collecting of documents, pictures, books, military artifacts, etc., pertaining to the Navy from the period of organization onwards. The museum provides a training facility to teach Naval and HMCS Chippawa history. It stimulates and fosters, within the general public, an interest in the Navy, its activities and accomplishments. The Museum is affiliated with the CMA, the CHIN, and the Virtual Museum of Canada.

Ross House Museum

The Ross House Museum is a museum in Winnipeg, Manitoba, housed in a log house that was designated a Winnipeg Landmark Heritage Structure in 1980. Originally standing on the bank of the Red River at the foot of what is now Market Avenue, the building became the first post office in Western Canada with the appointment of WilliamRoss as postmaster by the Council of Assiniboia in 1855. The building was saved from demolition in 1947 by the Manitoba Historical Society and moved to Higgins Ave across from the C.P.R. station. There it was restored, with the land and house featuring artifacts, monuments and markers relevant to the early history of Manitoba. In 1984 the house was once more moved, this time to its present location in Joe Zuken Heritage Park in Point Douglas.

Assiniboine Valley Railway

Assiniboine Valley Railway is a private 1:7.5 scale ridable miniature railway located in the community of Charleswood near Assiniboine Park in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. The track gauge is 7 1/2 in . Construction started in 1995 and operation began in the fall of 1996. The railway is owned and operated by the 75 member Assiniboine Valley Railway Club, Inc. with some of the equipment privately owned by members. The railway club president and owner of the land was William Arthur Taylor until his death in 2013. Presidency then transferred to vice president and co-founder Len La Rue. The network of tracks and "Charleswood Station" is located on a private 9-acre property. AVR is open to public for riding during the second weekend of the month between June and October. In addition, Christmas Lights Runs are operated every night from 6:30 pm till 9:00 pm. from the second weekend of December to the first weekend of January. Christmas lights are used along the line, their numbers growing from 98,000 in 2009 to more than 100,000, reaching 101,213 by December 9, 2012. As of April 2012 the railway had nine operating locomotives, including three steam locomotives and 53 cars, with eight more cars under construction.

Assiniboine Park

Assiniboine Park is a park in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The Winnipeg Public Parks Board was formed in 1893, and purchased the initial land for the park in 1904. Although in use before then, the park officially opened in 1909, and is located north of the Assiniboine Forest, along the Assiniboine River. It is named for the Assiniboine people. The park covers 1,100 acres, of which 400 acres are designed in the English landscape style. The park includes the 700-acre Assiniboine Forest, Assiniboine Park Zoo, Assiniboine Park Conservatory, the historic Assiniboine Park Pavilion, formal and informal gardens, a sculpture garden, a miniature railway, an outdoor theatre for performing arts, and numerous other attractions.

Esplanade Riel

Esplanade Riel is a pedestrian bridge located in Winnipeg, Manitoba. It was named in honour of Louis Riel. It is a side-spar cable-stayed bridge which spans the Red River connecting downtown Winnipeg with St. Boniface; it is paired with a vehicular bridge, the Provencher Bridge. The bridge includes an architectural composite tower that is prestressed with a cantilevered and stayed semi-circular plaza area at the base of the tower. The plaza provides space for commercial activities and as well as a restaurant. The Esplanade Riel is the only bridge with a restaurant in North America. Its first restaurant was a Salisbury House. Salisbury House is a chain restaurant local to Winnipeg. The next tenant was Chez Sophie sur le pont, which opened in the summer of 2013 and closed in February 2015. The Esplanade Riel has become a landmark and is used in many promotional materials. Opened to foot traffic in 2003 and having a grand opening in the summer of 2004, the Esplanade Riel was designed by Colin Douglas Stewart of Wardrop Engineering and the architect Étienne Gaboury. The original drawing, stamped by Colin Douglas Stewart, rests in the Engineering building of the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg. The Esplanade Riel was built as part of the Provencher Twin Bridges project, a $72 million project which included a new four-lane divided vehicular bridge as well as new roadways and sidewalks linking the bridges to Downtown Winnipeg and Waterfront Drive. In January 2013 the City of Winnipeg terminated the lease with Salisbury House and in March the city approved a five-year lease agreement with the French restaurant Chez Sophie sur le pont. The original Chez Sophie, founded in 2005, is located on Avenue de la Cathedrale. The restaurants are operated by Stephane and Sophie Wild, who are from the Alsace region of France. Chez Sophie closed on February 2, 2015.

Bruce Park

Bruce Park is a 13-acre urban park located at 1966 Portage Avenue, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. The park is bordered to the south by the Assiniboine River, to the east by Douglas Park Road, to the west by Deer Lodge Place, and to the north by Portage Avenue. The park has three foot bridges that cross the Truro Creek, which runs through the park. Features of the park include formal flower gardens, grassland and forest naturalization areas, the A.W. Hanks Walkway, the Bruce Park Cenotaph war memorial, a playground, and a wading pool. The park is open year round. Parking is accessed through the east back lane of Deer Lodge Place.

The museum preserves the history of Cavalry in Manitoba through the collection of documents, pictures, books, military artifacts, etc. It provides a training facility for the teaching of Regimental history. BDI Bridge

The Elm Park Bridge, sometimes locally referred to as The BDI Bridge or The Ice Cream Bridge, is a bridge across the Red River in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The bridge links Kingston Crescent with the Jubilee/Osborne area, a Winnipeg community across the Red River. The BDI Bridge nickname is derived from the nearby Bridge Drive-In, a popular ice cream vendor. The BDI itself is so-named because of its proximity to the Elm Park Bridge. It was built in 1912 and it was open to two-way vehicular traffic. The deck of the bridge is only 15 feet wide but even the large cars of the early 1960s passed each other. In 1974, it was closed to vehicular traffic, and is a common bridge for foot traffic to the BDI in summer.

The museum opened in 1998 and displays the Jewish history of settlement in Western Canada. Le Musée de Saint-Boniface Museum

Le Musée de Saint-Boniface Museum is a museum in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada that is dedicated to Franco-Manitoban culture and history. It is located in the oldest building in Winnipeg, a former convent run by the Grey Sisters. Begun in 1846 and finished in 1851, the former nunnery has been an orphanage, a school, a seniors home, and was the first incarnation of the St. Boniface Hospital. The museum contains many Franco-Manitoban and Métis artifacts.

The Winnipeg Art Gallery is a public art gallery that was founded in 1912. It is Canadas oldest civic gallery and the 6th largest in the country. The WAG is located in the heart of the city of Winnipeg, just two blocks from Manitobas Provincial Legislature and roughly the same distance from the University of Winnipeg. The WAGs permanent collection includes almost 24,000 works, with a particular emphasis on Manitoban and Canadian art. The collection ranges from 4th century BCE Greek sculpture to 21st century videos, and includes the worlds largest public collection of contemporary Inuit art. Historical, contemporary, photographic, decorative art, and Inuit works are featured in a variety of exhibitions each year, with each of the ten gallery spaces changing approximately every three months. Winnipeg Art Gallery is internationally respected, exhibitions having been shown in New York, Caracas, Bogotá, Barcelona, Tokyo, Thessaloniki, and Verona. The Clara Lander Library on the gallery mezzanine supports the research needs of staff, members, art students, artists, and the public. Over 9,000 artist biography files and more than 24,000 books are maintained in the library, as well as subscriptions to hundreds of arts journals and bulletins. The library is for on-site use only. Tours, lectures, and other adult and family programs are regularly available. Unique in the country is a dedicated Studio Building where art classes are conducted. The curriculum includes instruction by artists in almost all media, including clay, cartooning, watercolours and photography. The gallery moved to its present location in 1971, into a building designed by architect Gustavo Da Roza. With a prominent location near the Legislative Buildings and Portage Avenue, the gallerys building has become a downtown Winnipeg landmark. Along with the galleries, the main building houses a gift shop, a restaurant, a rooftop garden, meeting and lecture rooms, and a 325-seat theatre auditorium.

Riel House

Riel House is a National Historic Site commemorating the life of the Métis politician and activist Louis Riel, and also the daily life of Métis families in the Red River Settlement. The house is situated in the historic St. Vital parish, Winnipeg in Manitoba Canada. From 1865, the residence belonged to Riels mother, Julie Riel, and housed his brothers and their families. Louis Riel lived along with them from his return to Red River in 1868, through the Red River Resistance, until his exile in 1870. It is also where his body laid in state for two days in December 1885 after his sentencing and execution, before being buried in St. Boniface. The house remained within the possession of Riel descendants until 1968, when it was acquired by the Winnipeg Historical Society. The house was restored to its 1886 condition, and converted into a museum. It was designated a National Historic Site of Canada since 1976 and a Federal Heritage Building since 2000. It is administered by Parks Canada, and since 2013 the Louis Riel Institute provides interpretation and programming.

Transcona Historical Museum

Transcona Historical Museum is a museum in Winnipeg, Manitoba, that maintains and promotes the history, stories and community spirit of the neighbourhood of Transcona. The museum was founded in 1967 as Transcona’s Centennial Project celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the Confederation of Canada. Today, the museum is located in the only municipally designated heritage building in Transcona. This historic building was originally constructed by the Bank of Toronto in 1925 and later served as the Transcona Municipal Office. This building is owned and operated by the City of Winnipeg. Over the years, the THM has acquired an extensive collection of artifacts, photographs and documentary records that together tell the story of Transcona’s community history. Kildonan Park

Kildonan Park is a park in north Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Established in 1909, the park features the Peguis Pavilion, Rainbow Stage, the Witchs Hut, an Olympic-sized outdoor swimming pool, duck pond, and soccer field as well as picnic tables and barbecue pits. There are picnic sites and shelters available for rent. In winter the park features a skating pond and two tobogganing slides. Kildonan Park features 39 hectares of park area, 25 hectares of mowable turf and 27,000 square metres of pathways, including a perimeter path measuring 1.9 kilometres .
