Top Attractions in Constance

Triboldingerbohl

Triboldingerbohl, also known as Triboltingen or großes Bohl or Langenrain, is the fourth largest island of Lake Constance, with an area of 0.13557 square kilometres . It is 780 meters long and up to 230 meters wide. It is located in the easternmost part of the Untersee, near the point where the Seerhein flows into the lake. This part of the lake is also known as the Rheinsee. It belongs to the Wollmatinger Ried nature conservation area; administratively it belongs to the district industrial area of the City of Constance. Until 1934, it belonged to the municipality of Wollmatingen, which was then annexed by Constance. Triboldingerbohl lies 2.1 km southeast of Reichenau Island and 1.6 km from the dam that connects Reichenau to the mainland. The area between Triboldingerbohl island and the Reichenau dam is called Ermatinger pool and is an ecologically important shallow-water zone. Triboldingerbohl is uninhabited. It is a bird sanctuary. It takes its name from the former Swiss municipality Triboltingen, which was located on the souther shore of Lake Untersee. Between Triboldingerbohl and the mainland lies the smaller island of Mittler Bohl, also known as Langbohl. The two islands are separated by a channel which is only 30 to 50 meters wide. This channel and the channel separating Langbohl from the mainland are collectively known as Schläuche . Both island are covered with reeds. They consist of a several meters thick layer of Schnegglisand, a calcareous deposits from Blue-green algae), which is covered by a layer of humus. Although the island is uninhabited, it is listed in the Constance street directory. It falls under postal code 78467 .

Seerhein

The Seerhein is a river about four kilometres long, in the basin of Lake Constance. It is the outflow of the Upper Lake Constance and the main tributary of the Lower Lake Constance. The water level of the lower lake is about 30 cm below the level of the Upper Lake. It is considered part of the Rhine, which flows into Lake Constance as the Alpine Rhine and flows out of the Lake as the High Rhine. The Seerhein arose after the last Ice Age . Some time after this period, the water level of Lake Constance gradually dropped by about ten metres and the shallow parts fell dry. Some parts of the Seerhein still have a character a bit like a lake. The border between Germany and Switzerland runs down the center of the lower stretch of the river; the German city of Constance, the largest community on the river, is situated on both sides of the upper part.

Mainau

Mainau  is an island in Lake Constance . It is maintained as a garden island and a model of excellent environmental practices. Administratively, the island has been a part of Konstanz since December 1, 1971, when the municipality of Litzelstetten, of which Mainau was part, was incorporated into Konstanz. Mainau is still part of Litzelstetten, now one of 15 wards of Konstanz. The island belongs to the Lennart Bernadotte-Stiftung, an entity created by Prince Lennart, Count Bernadotte af Wisborg, formerly a Prince of Sweden and Duke of Småland. It is one of the main tourist attractions of Lake Constance. Beside flowers there is a park landscape with views on the lake. There is also a greenhouse with tropical climate and thousands of butterflies. Mainau Bay is the location of the university sailing club.

Botanical Garden of the University of Konstanz

The Botanischer Garten der Universität Konstanz is a botanical garden maintained by the University of Konstanz. It is located about 250 meters northwest of the campus north parking lot in Konstanz, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, and open weekdays without charge. The garden was begun in 1972, with its first greenhouses completed in 1982. Additional greenhouses were added in 1993, and in 1997 its outdoor garden was redesigned and replanted. Today the garden contain about 1400 species, including approximately 290 crop species outdoors and 160 tropical crop species in the greenhouse. Its major sections include regional plants, apple trees, crops, and an extensive collection of wild herbs and weeds from fields and vineyards. The greenhouses contain a collection of tropical crops, tropical weeds, and plants that demonstrate animal-plant interactions, as well as a cold house containing over 460 species, including flora of the Canary Islands, Mediterranean plants, carnivorous plants, and succulents. Garden staff also maintain two nature trails. Rare species from the Lake Constance region include Armeria purpurea, Blackstonia perfoliata, Deschampsia littoralis, Equisetum variegatum, Erucastrum nasturtiifolium, Gentiana utriculosa, Globularia punctata, Gratiola officinalis, Myosotis rehsteineri, Orcis coriophor, Orchis palustris, Oxytropis pilosa, Potentilla micrantha, Ranunculus reptans, and Samolus valerandi. Research on crop stress and disease includes Arabidopsis thaliana, Coffea arabica, Fragaria vesca, Malus domestica, Medicago sativa, Phragmites australis, and Vicia faba.

Imperia

The Imperia is a statue at the entrance of the harbour of Konstanz, Germany, commemorating the Council of Constance that took place there between 1414 and 1418. The concrete statue is 9 metres high, weighs 18 tonnes, and stands on a pedestal that rotates around its axis once every four minutes. It was created by Peter Lenk and clandestinely erected in 1993. The erection of the statue caused controversy, but it was on the private property of a rail company that did not object to its presence. The Imperia shows a woman holding two men on her hands. The two men represent Pope Martin V and Emperor Sigismund. Martin V was elected during the Council while Sigismund was the king who called the council. Both are naked except for the crown and papal tiara, respectively, that they wear as symbols of their power. The statue refers to a short story by Balzac, La Belle Impéria. The story is a harsh satire of the Catholic clergys morals, where Imperia seduces cardinals and princes at the Council of Constance and has power over them all. The historical Imperia that served as the source material of Balzacs story was a well-educated Italian courtesan who died in 1512, nearly 100 years after the council, and never visited Konstanz.
