Lake Amatitlán

Lake Amatitlán is a volcanic lake in south-central Guatemala, fairly close to Guatemala City. It lies in the central highlands, 1,186 m above sea level. Its maximum depth is 33 m and an average of 18 m . The lake is 11 km long and 3 km wide; with an area of 15.2 square kilometers and a water volume of 0.286 cubic kilometers. The lakes primary inflow is the Villalobos River, and the lake is drained by the Michatoya River, an important tributary of the María Linda River. The town of Amatitlán is situated at the head of the Michatoya river. A dam with a railway on top was constructed at the narrowest point, thus effectively dividing the lake into two water bodies with different physical, chemical and biological characteristics: a north-western and a south-eastern basin. The lake is used as a water source, for navigation and transportation, sightseeing and tourism, recreation and fisheries.

Kaminaljuyu

Kaminaljuyu is a Pre-Columbian site of the Maya civilization that was primarily occupied from 1500 BC to AD 1200. Kaminaljuyu has been described as one of the greatest of all archaeological sites in the New World by Michael Coe, although its remains today – a few mounds only – are far less impressive than other Maya sites more frequented by tourists. When first mapped scientifically, it comprised some 200 platforms and pyramidal mounds, at least half of which were created before the end of the Preclassic period . Debate continues about the size, scale, and degree by which, as an economic and political entity, it integrated both the immediate Valley of Guatemala and the Southern Maya area. The known parts of Kaminaljuyu lie on a broad plain beneath roughly the western third of modern Guatemala City. The Valley of Guatemala is surrounded by hills which culminate in a string of lofty volcanoes to the south. At an altitude of about 2000 m above sea level, the climate is temperate. Soils are rich because of frequent volcanic eruptions; volcanic ash in the form of hardened tuff reaches depths of several hundred meters in and around Kaminaljuyu, and deep clefts or barrancas mark the landscape. The Kaminaljuyu site largely was swallowed up by real estate developments in the late 20th century, although a portion of the Classic period center of Kaminaljuyu is preserved as a park. The distinctly unimpressive character of the extant remains is due not only to the location of the ancient city beneath a rapidly expanding Developing World capital city but also because the ancient architecture was constructed of hardened adobe, more perishable than the limestone used to build the cities in the Maya Lowlands. Because of these factors, the true size and scale of Kaminaljuyu likely will never be known. The state of destruction and the almost daily erasure of archaeological context underscore the many mysteries, in addition to size and scale, that likely will remain unanswered about Kaminaljuyu. Principally these questions are posed about the role of the city as the greatest of the Southern Maya area in Preclassic times, particularly during the "Miraflores" period, c. 400–100 BC; the SMA is long believed from much and diverse evidence to have been seminal in the development of Maya civilization.

Museo Popol Vuh

The Museo Popol Vuh is home to one of the major collections of Maya art in the world. It is located on the campus of the Universidad Francisco Marroquin in Zone 10, Guatemala City and is known for its extensive collection of pre-Columbian and colonial art of the Maya culture. The Popol Vuh Museum is a private, nonprofit, scientific institution supported by its own funds and external donations. The museum is operated by a Board of Directors of citizens of Guatemala interested in the preservation and public display of the exhibits. One of its missions is to provide an educational focus for people who want to see and learn about the pre-Columbian past of Guatemala with the preservation, research, and diffusion of information. Although the museum is well known for its funerary ceramic art, the collection includes a variety of portable stone sculptures, especially from the Preclassic period, and from the coast and adjacent highlands. The section on Maya pottery includes some of the best preserved Maya vases and bowls.

Cathedral of Guatemala City

The Cathedral of Guatemala City, also Metropolitan Cathedral, officially Catedral Primada Metropolitana de Santiago, is the main church of Guatemala City and of the Archdiocese of Guatemala (Archidioecesis Guatimalensis). It is located at the Parque Central in the center of the city. Its massive structure incorporates baroque and classical elements and has withstood numerous earthquakes. Damage by the devastating earthquakes of 1917 and 1976 has been repaired. The inside of the cathedral is relatively sparsely decorated but impresses by its size and its structural strength. The altars are ornate and decorative. In front of the cathedral stand a series of 12 pillars, solemnly remembering the names of thousands of people forcibly disappeared or murdered during the counterinsurgency violence of Guatemala's internal armed conflict, which began in 1960 and lasted until the final peace accord was signed in 1996.

Domo Polideportivo de la CDAG

The Domo Polideportivo de la CDAG, known commonly as Domo de la Zona 13, or simply as Domo, is a multi-purpose arena in Guatemala City, Guatemala. Built to host the 2000 FIFA Futsal World Championship, it is located in the Zone 13 of the Guatemalan capital, in the location of the Guatemalan bullring, and has a capacity of 7,500 seats. The venue is owned and operated by the Confederación Deportiva Autónoma de Guatemala, and is also used for musical presentations, as well as cultural and political activities, for which the CDAG leases the site. According to the CDAG, the Dome is a beautiful venue, but the high cost of its operation has affected its role as a sports venue, because most sports federations in the country cannot afford the cost of using it. By 2003, 60 percent of the activities conducted at the Domo were not related to sports.

Guatemala City Guatemala Temple

The Guatemala City Guatemala Temple (formerly the Guatemala City Temple) is the 34th constructed and 32nd operating temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). Located in Guatemala City, capital city of Guatemala, it was built with a modern six-spire design. In 1956, while Harold B. Lee (then a member of the Quorum of the Twelve) visited Guatemala City, he felt that it would be a center for Lamanite gatherings and predicted that a temple would be built there. The LDS temple in Guatemala City was announced on April 1, 1981, and dedicated on December 14, 1984 by Gordon B. Hinckley. The temple was built on a 1.4-acre (5,700 m2) plot, has 4 ordinance rooms and 3 sealing rooms, and has a total floor area of 11,610 square feet (1,079 m2).

Centro Cultural Miguel Ángel Asturias

The Centro Cultural Miguel Ángel Asturias, commonly called Teatro Nacional, is a cultural center in Guatemala City, Guatemala. It is located in the Centro Cívico of the city and was built in the same place of the old Fuerte de San José. Its form, which emulates a seated jaguar, stands out from the adjacent buildings. The complex, which was designed by architect Efrain Recinos, was completed in 1978. The center is named for Guatemalan writer and Nobel Laurate Miguel Ángel Asturias. It contains the Gran Sala Efrain Recinos, a large proscenium theater named for the centers architect, the Teatro de Cámara Hugo Carrillo, a smaller, black box theater named for the Guatemalan playwright and director, and an outdoor amphitheater, the Teatro al Aire Libre. The center also includes various plazas and salons, as well as the National Marimba Institute, Instituto Nacional de la Marimba.

Torre del Reformador

The Torre del Reformador is a 71.85 meter tall steel framework tower in Zone 9 of Guatemala City. The tower was built in 1935, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Justo Rufino Barrios, who was President of Guatemala and instituted a number of reforms. The basic shape of the structure resembles the Eiffel Tower. It was originally constructed with a bell on its top, which in 1986 was replaced with a beacon. A plaque at the base reads: Con una altura de 71.85 metros, la Torre Conmemorativa del 19 del Julio fue inagurada el 19 de julio de 1935 por el General Jorge Ubico Castañeda, en conmemoración al centenario del nacimento del General Justo Rufino Barrios. Desde su inauguración ha estado ubicada en el mismo lugar: Boulevard 15 de septiembre y Calle General Miguel García Granados, actualmente 7a. Avenida y 2a Calle Zona 9. La Torre del Reformador fue constriuda en los Estados Unidos de Norteamérica, con hierro galvanizado, a un costo de Q49,775.60 y fue ensamblada por el Ingeniero Arturo Bickford, Alcalde de la Ciudad en ese entonces. El Gobierno de Bélgica donó la campana que se suspende en el interior de su estructura. El faro, asi como la iluminación y la jardinización de sus bases, constituyen un aporte de la empresa PUBLICAR, S.A para el embellecimiento de este monumento que, a través de los años, se ha convertido en un símbolo perpetuo de nuestra hermosa ciudad. Guatemala de la Asunción, agosto 23 de 1997. which roughly translates to English as: With a height of 71.85 meters, the Commemorative Tower of the 19 of the July was inaugurated on the 19 of July 1935 by General Jorge Ubico Castañeda, in commemoration of the one hundredth anniversary of the birth of General Justo Rufino Barrios. From its inauguration it has been located at 15 de septiembre Boulevard and General Miguel García Granados Street, currently 7th Avenue and 2nd Street, Zone 9. The Tower of the Reformer was constructed in the United States, with galvanized iron, to a cost of Q49,775.60 and was assembled by the Engineer Arturo Bickford, Mayor of the City at that time. The Government of Belgium donated the bell that is suspended inside its structure. The light, as well as the beacon and the landscaping of the bases, constitute a contribution of the company PUBLICAR, S.A. for the embellishment of this monument that, through the years, has become a perpetual symbol of our beautiful city.
