Reggio di Calabria

Reggio di Calabria is the biggest city and the most populated comune of Calabria, Southern Italy. It is the capital of the Province of Reggio Calabria and the seat of the Regional Council of Calabria. Reggio is located on the "toe" of the Italian Peninsula and is separated from the island of Sicily by the Strait of Messina. It is situated on the slopes of the Aspromonte, a long, craggy mountain range that runs up through the center of the region. The third economic center of mainland Southern Italy, the city proper has a population of more than 185,000 inhabitants spread over 236 square kilometres , while the fast-growing urban area numbers 260,000 inhabitants. About 560,000 people live in the metropolitan area, recognised in 2009 by Italian Republic as a metropolitan city. As a major functional pole in the region, it has strong historical, cultural and economic ties with the city of Messina, which lies across the strait in Sicily, forming a metro city of less than 1 million people. Reggio is the oldest city in the region, and despite its ancient foundation Ρηγιον was an important and flourishing colony of Magna Graecia it boasts a modern urban system, set up after the catastrophic earthquake on 28 December 1908, which destroyed most of the city. The region has been subject to earthquakes. It is a major economic center for regional services and transport on the southern shores of the Mediterranean. Reggio, with Naples and Taranto, is home to one of the most important archaeological museums, the prestigious National Archaeological Museum of Magna Græcia, dedicated to Ancient Greece (which houses the famous Bronzes of Riace, rare example of Greek bronze sculpture, which became one of the symbols of the city). Reggio is the seat, since 1907, of the Archeological Superintendence of Bruttium and Lucania. The city has two recently founded universities: the "Mediterranea" University, and the "Università per Stranieri" (University for Foreigners). There are also an Academy of Fine Arts and a Conservatory of Music (founded 1927). The city center, consisting primarily of Liberty buildings, has a linear development along the coast with parallel streets, and the promenade is dotted with rare magnolias and exotic palms. Reggio has commonly used popular nicknames: The "city of Bronzes", for the Riace bronzes which are testimonials of its Greek origins; the "city of bergamot", which is exclusively cultivated in the region; and the "city of Fatamorgana", an optical phenomenon visible in Italy only from the Reggio seaside. The city was an Italian candidate to become the European Capital of Culture. in 2019.

Zambrone

Zambrone is a comune in the Province of Vibo Valentia in the Italian region Calabria, located about 60 kilometres southwest of Catanzaro and about 9 kilometres northwest of Vibo Valentia. As of 31 December 2004, it had a population of 1,803 and an area of 14.4 square kilometres . Zambrone borders the following municipalities: Briatico, Parghelia, Zaccanopoli.

Motta San Giovanni

Motta San Giovanni is a comune in the Province of Reggio Calabria in the Italian region Calabria, located about 130 kilometres southwest of Catanzaro and about 13 kilometres southeast of Reggio Calabria. Motta San Giovanni borders the municipalities of Montebello Ionico and Reggio Calabria. The most interesting feature of the comune is the Castle of SantAniceto, a notable example of Byzantine-Norman architecture. The Capo dellArmi Lighthouse is also located in the comune along the clifftops.

Aquapark di Zambrone

Aquapark Zambrone was the first water park in southern Italy, located on the coast of the comune of Zambrone in the Province of Vibo Valentia. The World Waterpark Association calls it "one of the largest and most famous waterparks of Southern Italy". Construction began on January 11, 1989 and seven months later, on August 13 of the same year, its gates were opened for the first time to the public. The 60,000 square metres park closed in 2007 to make way to a luxury resort hotel.

Rossano

Rossano is a town and comune in Southern Italy, in the province of Cosenza . The city is situated on an eminence c. 3. km from the Gulf of Taranto. The town is known for its marble and alabaster quarries. The town is the seat of a Catholic archbishop and has a notable cathedral and castle. Two Popes have been born in the town, along with Saint Nilus the Younger.

Cosenza

Cosenza is a city in the Calabria region of Southern Italy. The municipal population is of around 70,000. The urban area, however, counts over 268,000 inhabitants. It is the capital of the homonymous Province of Cosenza, which has a population of around 735,000. The ancient town is the seat of the Cosentinian Academy, the second academy of philosophical and literary studies to be founded in the Kingdom of Naples and one of the oldest in Europe. To this day, the city remains a cultural hub with several museums, theatres, libraries and the University of Calabria.

Bagnara Calabra

Bagnara Calabra is a comune in the Province of Reggio Calabria in the Italian region of Calabria, located about 100 kilometres southwest of Catanzaro and about 25 kilometres northeast of Reggio Calabria.

Stilo

Stilo is a town and comune in the province of Reggio Calabria, in the Calabria region of southern Italy. It is 151 kilometres from Reggio Calabria. The economy of the commune is mainly based on agriculture, with production of cereals, oil, wine and cheese. There are mines of iron and lead. At 10 kilometres from the city is the promontory of Cape Stilo, where in 1940 the Battle of Punta Stilo was fought by the Italian and British Navies.

Monasterace

Monasterace is a comune in the Province of Reggio Calabria in the Italian region Calabria, located about 50 kilometres south of Catanzaro and about 90 kilometres northeast of Reggio Calabria. The ruins of the ancient Greek city Caulonia are located a short distance north of the frazione Monasterace Marina, on the coast. Also north of Monasterace Marina is the Monasterace Archeological Museum, where finds from Caulonia are exhibited.

Castle of Sant'Aniceto

The Castle of SantAniceto is a Byzantine castle built in the early 11th century on a hill in Motta San Giovanni, now in the province of Reggio Calabria, southern Italy. It is one of the few examples of High Middle Ages architecture in Calabria, as well as one of the few well-preserved Byzantine fortifications in the world. The name derives from that of St. Nicetas, a Byzantine admiral who lived in the 7th-8th centuries.

Italia Viaduct

Italia Viaduct is a 259-metre-high viaduct near Laino Borgo, Calabria, Italy. It is the highest bridge in Italy, and was the second highest bridge in the world when it opened in 1974. As of 2012, it is among the twenty highest bridges in the world. The bridge is located on Autostrada A3 Napoli-Reggio Calabria Motorway between Laino Borgo and Mormanno and crosses the Lao River Gorge.

Sfalassa Viaduct

Sfalassà Viaduct is a 254 metre high viaduct near Bagnara Calabra, Calabria, Italy. The bridge is located on Autostrada A3 Napoli-Reggio Calabria Motorway and has a main span of 376 metres. It is the highest and longest span frame bridge in the world and as of 2012 it is among the 20 highest bridges of any type. It is the second highest bridge in Italy after the Italia Viaduct. The Sfalassà Viaduct won the CECM European award in the 1970s.

Territorial Abbey and Sanctuary of Santa Maria di Polsi

The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Polsi, also known as the Sanctuary of Santa Maria di Polsi or Our Lady of the Mountain, is a Christian sanctuary in the heart of the Aspromonte mountains, near San Luca in Calabria, southern Italy. It was founded by Roger II of Sicily in 1144. The church and monastery are situated in a spectacular setting at the bottom of a gorge at an altitude of 865 metres surrounded by high mountains on the east side of the Montalto the highest peak of the Aspromonte. The sanctuary is difficult to reach. Until some years ago Polsi could only reached by foot.

National Museum of Magna Grecia

The Museo Nazionale della Magna Grecia (National Museum of Magna Græcia), Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Reggio Calabria (National Archaeological Museum of Reggio Calabria) or Palazzo Piacentini is a museum in Reggio Calabria, southern Italy, housing an archaeological collection from sites in Magna Graecia. Initially formed with a nucleus of material ceded from the city's Museo Civico in the 19th century, the Museo Archeologico Nazionale della Magna Grecia then grew via many discoveries in various excavation campaigns in the ancient city-states of Calabria, Basilicata and Sicily by the Soprintendenza Archeologica della Calabria right up to the present day, including the Riace bronzes. They are extremely important for studies of the 8th century BC, but also has several objects from the prehistoric and protohistoric periods which preceded it and the ancient Roman and Byzantine eras which followed. Today new finds in Calabria are no longer displayed and conserved in a single museum, but exhibited where they have been found, since the quantity of new discoveries has allowed smaller local museums to be set up for them (at Crotone, Locri, Roccelletta di Borgia, Sibari, Vibo Valentia and Lamezia Terme). These are taken together as the museo reggino.

Rossano Cathedral

Rossano Cathedral is a Roman Catholic cathedral in the city of Rossano, Italy, dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary as Maria Santissima Acheropita. It is the seat of the Archbishop of Rossano-Cariati, and previously of the Bishops and Archbishops of Rossano.

Aspromonte National Park

Aspromonte National Park is situated in the southern section of the Apennines, in Calabria, Italy. The park lies near the sea and includes mountain summits nearly reaching the 2,000 meters of height . The parks territory, crossed by several watercourses, is populated by important animal species like the wolf, the peregrine falcon, the eagle owl, and the goshawk. Most of the territory is dominated by forests of beech trees, silver firs, black pines, holm oaks, chestnut trees, and Mediterranean maquis. A couple of rare species live here: Bonellis eagle and a tropical fern . Surrounded by the Mediterranean, the Park is also rich in historical, artistic, and archaeological values.

Sila National Park

Sila National Park was established in 1997 and covers about 74,000 ha of charming and wild areas in Calabria. Besides offering exciting landscapes stretching out towards Pollino, Aspromonte, Etna, the Ionian and Tyrrhenian Sea, it is also characterized by the presence of several rural and tourist villages and a very rich artistic and cultural heritage. Its highest mountains are Mt. Botte Donato, in Sila Grande, and Mt. Gariglione in Sila Piccola.

Brognaturo

Brognaturo is a comune in the Province of Vibo Valentia in the Italian region Calabria, located about 40 kilometres southwest of Catanzaro and about 25 kilometres southeast of Vibo Valentia. As of 31 December 2004, it had a population of 712 and an area of 24.5 square kilometres . Brognaturo borders the following municipalities: Badolato, Cardinale, Guardavalle, San Sostene, Santa Caterina dello Ionio, Simbario, Spadola, Stilo.

Palmi

Palmi is a comune of about 19,303 inhabitants in the province of Reggio Calabria in Calabria. It is seat of the district, which includes 33 municipalities in the plain of Palmi, with a population of approximately 170,000 inhabitants. With the nearby beaches of Marina di Palmi and Lido di Palmi, overlooking the Violet coast, the city is a major seaside resort thanks to its landscape, which has led writers and poets to call it the "terrace on the Strait of Messina". In addition to being the main administrative center, office and school of the Tyrrhenian coast of the province of Reggio Calabria, Palmi was also an important agricultural and commercial center and a bishopric of Roman Catholic Diocese of Oppido Mamertina-Palmi. For centuries, the city was one of the most important cultural centers of Calabria in the literary, musical, historical and archaeological interest. Gave birth, among others, to the famous composer Francesco Cilea, and the writer Leonida Repaci and houses the museum complex of the House of Culture and the Archaeological park of Tauriani, on the ruins of the ancient city of Tauriana. In the latter lived in Saint Fantino, saint oldest of Calabria and the crypt, which contained his remains, is currently the oldest catholic place of worship in the region. In addition to Palmi are celebrated two holidays of national importance. The two events are the Varia di Palmi, inserted in 2013 in the UNESCO "Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity", and the feast of Saint Roch with the "procession of barbed wire".

Monte Consolino

Monte Consolino is a mountain in the Serre Calabresi range, in the Vallata dello Stilaro of south-western Calabria, in southern Italy. Monte Consolino has an altitude of 701 metres . Geography At the foot of Monte Consolino feet is the town of Stilo. The town of Pazzano is located nearby between this mountain and Monte Stella. Bivongi is also. It is separated from the Monte Mammicomito by a narrow valley, in which is the town of Pazzano. History On the mountains top are the stone ruins of the Norman castle built by Roger II of Sicily . Just below, are the ruins of the so-called Byzantine kastrum.

Laüs

Laüs or Laus was an ancient city of Magna Graecia on the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea. It was a colony of Sybaris at the mouth of the Lao River, which formed the boundary between Lucania and Bruttium in ancient times. The river and the city have the same name in Ancient Greek. Today the archaeological site of the city can be found at a short distance to the east of Marcellina, a frazione of the comune of Santa Maria del Cedro in Calabria.

Timpone della Motta

The Timpone della Motta is a hill two kilometers to the southwest of Francavilla Marittima in Calabria, Italy. It is an archaeological site which was inhabited since the Middle Bronze Age. In the Iron Age the hill was the site of an Oenotrian settlement. Over time the settlement was transformed into an important sanctuary, which was notable as the site of the first known ancient Greek temples on the Italian Peninsula. The Oenotrians were influenced by the culture of the Greek colonists from nearby Sybaris, who eventually took over the site in the second half of the seventh century. The hill was abandoned when the Bruttians conquered the region in the fourth century BC.

Pentedattilo

Pentedattilo (Calabrian Greek: Pentadàktilo) is a ghost town in Calabria, southern Italy, administratively a frazione of Melito di Porto Salvo. Until 1811, before the unification of Italy, it was a separate commune. It is situated at 250 m above the sea level, on the Monte Calvario, a mountain whose shapes once resembled that of five fingers (whence the name, from the Greek penta + daktylos , meaning "five fingers")

Locri Cathedral

Locri Cathedral is a Roman Catholic cathedral dedicated to the Virgin Mary in the city of Locri, in Calabria, Italy. Since 1954 it has been the seat of the bishops of Gerace-Locri, now the bishops of Locri-Gerace. The church building, in the Lombard Romanesque style, was built in 1933 by order of Bishop Giorgio Delrio . The interior, on a Latin cross groundplan, has three aisles: the two side aisles terminate in small chapels. The central part of the north aisle contains a marble sculpture depicting Bishop Francesco Saverio Mangeruva and the sarcophagus of Bishop Michele Alberto Arduino .

The Castle of Stilo or Norman Castle is a castle of the Norman period built at Stilo, Calabria in southern Italy by Roger II of Sicily upon Monte Consolino in the 11th century.

Scilla

Scilla is a town and comune in Calabria, Italy, administratively part of the Province of Reggio Calabria. It is the traditional site of the sea monster Scylla of Greek mythology. The town, 22 kilometres from the city of Reggio, lies in front of the strait of Messina, and it is composed of two parts: the downtown, where the town offices and the residence of the patronal saint are situated, and Marina di Scilla, the beach-front, populated by tourists and thus heavily characterized by hotels and restaurants. Since its beach is the first place north of Reggio Calabria where the waters are not cooled down by the strait draughts. The Ruffo Castle, a fortress built by the Dukes of Calabria overlooks the beach. The village suffered greatly from the 1783 Calabria earthquakes.

Natural regional park of Serre is a protected natural area of Calabria created at 2004. Between Aspromonte and Sila and crossed by two mountain ranges, large forests, including Wood of Stilo and rivers with falss like Marmarico falls near Bivongi, Pietracupa fall near Guardavalle. The park is large 17.687 ha and was inside many comunes territories among province of Catanzaro, Reggio Calabria and Vibo Valentia: Acquaro, Arena, Badolato, Bivongi, Brognaturo, Cardinale, Davoli, Fabrizia, Gerocarne, Guardavalle, Maierato, Mongiana, Monterosso Calabro, Nardodipace, Pizzo, Pizzoni, Polia, Santa Caterina dello Ionio, Satriano, San Sostene, Serra San Bruno, Simbario, Sorianello, Spadola, Stilo.

PalaCalafiore

PalaCalafiore is an indoor sporting arena located in Reggio Calabria (in the zone of the city called Pentimele), Italy. The capacity of the arena is 8,500 people. It is the home of the Viola Reggio Calabria basketball team; it hosted the 2006 FIVB World Grand Prix final and the Pool D of 2010 FIVB Men's World Championship.
