Scunthorpe is a town in North Lincolnshire, England. It is the administrative centre of the North Lincolnshire unitary authority, and had an estimated total resident population of 72,514 people in 2010. A predominantly industrial town, Scunthorpe, the United Kingdoms largest steel processing centre, is also known as the "Industrial Garden Town". It is the third largest settlement in Lincolnshire after Lincoln and Grimsby. The Member of Parliament for Scunthorpe is Nic Dakin .

Barton upon Humber

Barton-upon-Humber or Barton is a town and civil parish in North Lincolnshire, England. It is situated on the south bank of the Humber Estuary at the southern end of the Humber Bridge. It is 46 miles east of Leeds, 6 miles south-west of Hull and 31 miles north north-east of the county town of Lincoln. Other nearby towns include Scunthorpe to the south-west and Grimsby to the south-east.

The town lies at the junction of the River Ancholme and east-west transport routes across northern Lincolnshire. As a formerly important local centre, the towns full name of Glanford Brigg is reflected in the surrounding area and local government district of the same name. The towns urban area includes the neighbouring hamlet of Scawby Brook.

South Killingholme

South Killingholme is a village and civil parish in North Lincolnshire, England. The parish was predominately agricultural and sparsely populated and the village small until the 1960s when industrialisation of the south humber bank took place throughout area northwest of Grimsby within the parish of South Killingholme the Humber Oil Refinery was built in the late 1960s. At the same time the village greatly expanded reaching near its present scale by the early 1970s. The expansion of the Port of Immingham westwards encroached on the parish from the 1970s onwards, mainly due to the Immingham Bulk Terminal and later Immingham Gas Jetty ; in 2004 a 730MW powerstation Conoco Philips Power Station was built alongside the refinery. As of 2006 the land area of the parish consists of an approximately 50:50 split of heavy industry petroleum storage, refining and power generation; and agricultural land. South Killingholme is the only village in the parish and is located roughly in the centre of area.

Epworth

Epworth is a small town and civil parish in the Isle of Axholme, North Lincolnshire, England. The town lies on the A161, about halfway between Goole and Gainsborough. As the birthplace of John Wesley and Charles Wesley, it has given its name to many institutions associated with Methodism. Their father, Samuel Wesley, was the rector from 1695 to 1735.

Crowle

Owston Ferry

Owston Ferry is a village and civil parish in North Lincolnshire, England. It is situated on the west bank of the River Trent, and 9 miles north from Gainsborough, and has a total resident population of 1,128. Sometimes referred to in short as Owston or Ferry, the village, which forms part of the Isle of Axholme, is bounded to the west by the A161 road and the village of Haxey. The River Trent is directly to the east. To the north, beyond a number of hamlets and villages, lies the River Humber. West Butterwick was originally a part of the township of Owston.

The village is situated on the B1450 on the east bank of the River Trent approximately 1 mile south from Gunness. Burringham's Grade II listed Anglican church is dedicated to St John the Baptist. It was designed by Samuel Sanders Teulon in 1856-67. The village primary school is in Gunness. Its public house, Take a Gander, is on High Street. Burringham used to share the Gunness and Burringham railway station.

Alkborough is a parish of 458 people in 192 households in North Lincolnshire, England, located near the northern end of The Cliff range of hills overlooking Trent Falls, the confluence of the River Trent and the River Ouse. Alkborough, with the hamlet of Walcot about 1 mile south, forms a civil parish which covers about 2,875 acres . The village was once thought to be the location that the Romans called Aquis, but that name is now usually associated with the town of Buxton in Derbyshire .

St Peter's Church, Barton-upon-Humber

St Peters Church is the former parish church of Barton-upon-Humber in North Lincolnshire, England. It is one of the best known Anglo-Saxon buildings, in part due to its role in Thomas Rickmans identification of the style. It has been subject to major excavations. The former Church of England church is now run by English Heritage and houses an exhibition exploring its history.

Redbourne

Redbourne is a village and civil parish in the North Lincolnshire district of Lincolnshire, England. The village is situated near the A15 road, and 5 miles south from Brigg. According to the 2001 Census Redbourne had a population of 386, rising slightly to 400 at the 2011 census. The name Redbourne is derived from the Old English Name "Hredburna" meaning "reedy burn", a reference to a stream running through the village. The parish church of St Andrew was made redundant from the Church of England in 1978 and is now maintained by The Churches Conservation Trust. It is a Grade I listed building. Although the church has 14th- and 15th-century origins, the bulk of the existing building is 18th-century and represents a Georgian Gothic style, using a mixture of squared and coursed rubble limestone with ashlar dressings. Its square tower is approximately 90 feet high. The alterations of 1772-4 in the gothic style were by the Lincoln architects Thomas and Henry Lumby and the chapel on the south side of the chancel served as a mausoleum for the family of the Dukes of St Albans. The Red Lion Hotel coaching inn on the village green dates from the 17th century. A conservation area was designated in August 1985 by the old Humberside County Council and covers the historic village core but excludes the more recent residential developments on the periphery.

Owston Ferry Castle

Owston Ferry Castle was in the village of Owston Ferry, some 12 kilometres to the north of Gainsborough, Lincolnshire. It is thought that the original castle on this site was erected soon after the Norman Conquest but that it was dismantled in 1095. It was rebuilt in 1173 by Roger de Mowbray to support Prince Henry in the conflict with his father Henry II who subsequently had the castle destroyed. The site of the motte remains as a broad grassy mound. The surrounding area is now a Local Nature Reserve.

Wrawby

Wrawby is a small village in North Lincolnshire, England. It is situated 2 miles east from Brigg and close to Humberside Airport on the A18. The 2001 Census recorded a village population of 1,293. Wrawby is most noted for Wrawby Postmill.

Julian's Bower

Julians Bower or Julian Bower is a name which was given to turf mazes in several different parts of England. Only one of this name still exists, at Alkborough in North Lincolnshire. It has also been known by corrupted forms of the name, such as "Gillians Bore" and "Gilling Bore". The 18th century antiquary William Stukeley mentions a "Julian Bower" turf maze at Horncastle, Lincolnshire, and in nearby Louth there was a "Gelyan Bower", which was mentioned in accounts of 1554. At Goathland, North Yorkshire there was a "July Park" or "St Julians" maze. At Whinfell Forest there is a farm called Julian Bower, originally built to support the Keeper. It now lies outside the forest boundary. Some English turf mazes are very similar in their layout to Scandinavian labyrinths, which usually have their paths marked with stones. At Grothornet, in Vartdal in the Sunnmore Province of Norway there is a stone-lined labyrinth called "Den Julianske Borg" . The name is believed to be derived from Julus, son of Aeneas of Troy, and the word place-name element burgh, meaning "a fortified place", "fort" or "castle". The reasoning behind this etymology is based on the fact that many mazes and labyrinths in Britain were called "Troy", "Troy Town" or "The Walls of Troy"; similar names, such as "Trojaburg", "Trojburg" or "Trelleborg", were used in Scandinavia. In popular legend, the walls of the city of Troy were constructed in such a complex and confusing way that any enemy who entered them would be unable to find his way out. On a clear day, Emley Moor TV tower, the top of York Minster and the Kilburn White Horse can be seen from Julians Bower.

Bottesford Preceptory

Bottesford Preceptory was sited at Bottesford, just to the south of Scunthorpe, in Lindsey, England. It was on low-lying land, near the Bottesford Beck, about 3 miles to the west of the escarpment of the Lincoln Cliff limestone upland, and about the same distance to the east of the River Trent. A preceptory was a community of the Knights Templar who lived on one of that order's estates in the charge of its preceptor. A preceptory also referred to the estate and its buildings. The present Bottesford Manor is believed to have been the gatehouse to the preceptory. Templars Bath, a spring in the field behind Bottesford Manor, is now hardly discernible, being simply a gathering of stones. The bath has been attributed to the Romans but others believe it was a dipping bath or well used by the Templar workers. It was once used as a "magic" health-giving spring. Travellers would drink its waters and leave cloth offerings . This healing property was probably associated with its position near a Templar hospital. The only distinctive Templar artefact found here was an ancient gravestone with a large cross upon it. It was covering a body buried in a grave that had been placed at the angle formed by the north wall of the chancel and the east wall of the north transept, though this description is inconsistent with a normal Templar round church. Archaeologists excavated the Templar fields nearby in 1983, but little was found and the land was back-filled. == Lincolnshire preceptories == Until their disbandment in 1312, the Knights Templar were major landowners on the higher lands of Lincolnshire, where they had a number of preceptories on property which provided income, while Temple Bruer was an estate on the Lincoln Heath, believed to have been used also for military training. The preceptories from which the Lincolnshire properties were managed were: Aslackby Preceptory, Kesteven (TF0830) Bottesford, Lindsey (SE8907) Eagle, Kesteven (SK875672) Great Limber, Lindsey (TA1308) Horkstow, Lindsey (SE9818) Witham Preceptory, Kesteven (SK928205) Temple Bruer, Kesteven (TF0054) Willoughton Preceptory, Lindsey (SK923931) Byard's Leap was part of the Temple Bruer estate.

Appleby Frodingham Railway

The Appleby Frodingham Railway Preservation Society is based at Scunthorpe in North Lincolnshire. The society owns locomotives and rolling stock but not the railway it runs on. The name comes from the Appleby-Frodingham Steel Company, now simply known as Scunthorpe Works. The railway operates entirely within the TATA steelworks over the tracks normally used for moving iron, steel and materials around the works.

Wrawby Windmill

Wrawby Postmill is a windmill at Wrawby near Brigg, in North Lincolnshire, England. The mill is the last post mill in the north of England, and was built between 1760 and 1790 to serve the Elsham Hall estate. Originally it had four common sails, but through most of its working life had a more usual combination of two common and two spring sails, providing power with flexibility. It was working until the 1940s, when it had four spring sails, before becoming derelict. Following a possibility of demolition it was acquired and restored in 1965 by Wrawby Windmill Preservation Society. Maintenance work in 2008, which returned the mill to mixed sail types, was funded by the SPAB Mill Repairs Fund and local residents. The mill is open to the public, contains a small museum of milling tools, and holds milling demonstrations.

Humber Bridge

The Humber Bridge, near Kingston upon Hull, England, is a 2,220-metre single-span suspension bridge, which opened to traffic on 24 June 1981. It was the longest of its type in the world when opened, and is now the seventh-longest. It spans the Humber between Barton-upon-Humber on the south bank and Hessle on the north bank, connecting the East Riding of Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire. When it opened in 1981 both sides of the bridge were in the non-metropolitan county of Humberside until its dissolution in 1996. The bridge itself can be seen for miles around and as far as Ottringham in the East Riding of Yorkshire. As of 2006, the bridge carried an average of 120,000 vehicles per week. The toll was £3.00 each way for cars, which made it the most expensive toll crossing in the United Kingdom. As of 1 April 2012, the toll was reduced to £1.50 each way after the UK government deferred £150 million from the bridges current debt.

Crowle Stone

The Crowle Stone is the remains of an Anglo-Saxon cross at the back of the Church of England parish church of St Oswald at Crowle, Lincolnshire. This was originally carved as a cross shaft and until 1919 it was used as a lintel over the west door. The preservation of the stone is almost certainly as a result of the Norman masons reusing it when the church was built in 1150. The stone measures 6 ft 11 in in height 16 in thick and 8.5 in wide. The stone is ornately carved on all three sides. At the bottom of one face there is a runic inscription which would date the cross shaft as being before 950 as the use of runes had almost completely died out by then.

Axholme Charterhouse

Axholme Charterhouse or Axholme Priory, also Melwood Priory or Low Melwood Priory, North Lincolnshire, is one of the ten medieval Carthusian houses in England. It was established in 1397/1398 by Thomas Mowbray, Earl of Nottingham and later Duke of Norfolk. The house was centred on a pre-existing chapel on the present Low Melwood Farm, between Owston Ferry and Epworth in the Isle of Axholme, which according to a papal bull of 1398 "was called anciently the Priory of the Wood". The full name of the monastery was The House of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The prior, Saint Augustine Webster, was imprisoned in the Tower of London in 1535 for refusing the Oath of Supremacy and later martyred and canonised. The monastery was suppressed during the Dissolution of the Monasteries in June 1538. Afterwards the buildings were converted by John Candysshe into a house: parts still survive as do some earthworks. There has been limited excavation.

Gainsthorpe

Gainsthorpe is a deserted medieval village site in a field which is part of the present Gainsthorpe Farm in Lincolnshire, England. The site is in Hibaldstow civil parish located on a minor road west of the A15 road, south of Hibaldstow and 5 miles south-west of Brigg. It is now in the care of English Heritage. There is a small car park from where a footpath of about 220 yards leads to the site. The typical medieval layout of sunken roads and raised rectangular tofts and crofts is clearly seen in the humps and hollows of the field.

Normanby Hall

Normanby Hall is a classic English mansion, located near the village of Burton-upon-Stather, 5 miles north of Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire. The present Hall was built in 1825–30 to the designs of Robert Smirke for Sir Robert Sheffield . The Sheffield family had lived on the site since 1539 and the familys titles include Dukes of Buckingham and Normanby and Sheffield baronets. It replaced a previous 17th-century building. John Sheffield became Duke of Buckingham and Normanby in 1703. He built a fine mansion in London called Buckingham House. His son, the second Duke sold the house to George III and it is now known as Buckingham Palace. The house was extended and altered to designs by Walter Brierley between 1906 and 1908. The Sheffield family moved out of Normanby Hall in 1963. The Hall is now in the care of the North Lincolnshire Council. The former 350 acre estate around the Hall is now a Country Park. Within it, there are a restored working Victorian walled garden, a farming museum, a stableyard, duck ponds, a deer sanctuary, a fishing lake, a miniature railway and broadleaf woodland. Samantha Cameron, wife of the Conservative Prime Minister, David Cameron and elder daughter of the eighth Baronet, grew up on the estate.

Ropewalk Barton upon Humber

The Ropewalk on Maltkiln Road, Barton upon Humber, Lincolnshire, England, is a regional centre for the arts. Its facilities include five galleries and exhibition areas, a sculpture garden and a coffee shop. Ropery Hall is a community performance venue for live music, theatre and cinema. Other facilities include a printmaking workshop, artists’ studios, meeting rooms and a picture framing department. The main galleries feature changing exhibitions of fine art in all media, and the Craft Gallery has a display of handmade contemporary jewellery, studio ceramics, textiles and glassware for sale. The Ropewalk is housed in the former ropewalk of Hall’s Barton Ropery, the longest Grade II listed building in the country. The factory closed in 1989. Ropewalk Museum is also located in the facility. Its exhibits focus on the history of the factory and its employees.

Baysgarth House Museum is a local museum located in Baysgarth House, situated in Baysgarth Park, in the market town of Barton-upon-Humber, Lincolnshire, England. The museum is mainly staffed by volunteers who are responsible for opening the museum to the public, running exhibitions and assisting in collections care.

Atkinsons Warren

Atkinsons Warren is a large area of woodland in northwest Scunthorpe. It is a Local Nature Reserve, and includes a meadow grazed by rabbits, rough grassland, developing scrub, and birch and oak woodland. It also features tree carvings. The Warren can be publicly accessed on foot or by car, and is used for walking dogs and riding bicycles. The name comes from Walter Atkinson, gamekeeper for the Sheffield family, of Normanby. Atkinson lived in the south shooting lodge of the Warren from 1905 to 1966. Over 33 Hectares of the Warren was declared a nature reserve on 28 July 2004, though a small error in draughting led to 0.08 Hectares being removed in 2008.

Belshaw

Belshaw is a Site of Special Scientific Interest in Lincolnshire, England. It lies to the west of the village of Belton in the Isle of Axholme. The site, which was designated a SSSI in 1988, is a short length of land along a disused railway line and is important because it supports a colony of greater yellow-rattle. This ia a nationally rare plant which receives special protection under Schedule 8 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act, 1981. Once widely distributed, this species is now known to occur at only six localities in Great Britain.

Plowright Theatre

The Plowright Theatre, is a live entertainment venue on Laneham Street in Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire. It is owned by North Lincolnshire Council and managed by SMG-Europe. It is the Sister Venue to the Baths Hall located on Doncaster Road in Scunthorpe. The Plowright Theatre was commissioned by the former Scunthorpe Borough Council and built by J. W. Taylor in 1958. It is a traditional proscenium style theatre with a 354 seat auditorium. Originally known as Scunthorpe Civic Theatre it was renamed in the 1990s in recognition of the achievements of local actress Joan Plowright. Plowright was born in Brigg, educated in Scunthorpe, and is currently the President of Scunthorpe Little Theatre Club. The club was founded by her father, Bill Plowright, and staged the theatres first performance, Peer Gynt, in 1958.

Baysgarth Park

Baysgarth Park is a public park situated in the market town of Barton-upon-Humber, Lincolnshire, England. The park provides thirty acres of recreational space off Brigg Road to the south of the town. Baysgarth House, located in the park, contains Baysgarth House Museum, which illustrates the history, archaeology, flora and fauna of the district. Baysgarth Leisure Centre is also located here.
