Copán Department

Copán is one of the departments in the western part of Honduras. The departmental capital is the town of Santa Rosa de Copán. The department is well known for its tobacco and fine cigars. The department is famous for its Pre-Columbian archaeological site at Copán, one of the greatest cities of the Maya civilization. The department of Copán covers a total surface area of 3,242 km2 and, in 2015, had an estimated population of about 382,722 people.

Tegucigalpa

Tegucigalpa commonly referred to as Tegus, is the capital of Honduras and seat of government of the Republic, along with its twin sister Comayagüela. Claimed on September 29, 1578 by the Spaniards, it became the country's capital on October 30, 1880 under President Marco Aurelio Soto. The current Constitution of Honduras, enacted in 1982, names the sister cities of Tegucigalpa[a] and Comayagüela[b] as a Central District[c] to serve as the permanent national capital, under articles 8 and 295. After a failed attempt to maintain a Central American republic in 1821, Honduras returned to become an individual sovereign nation and on January 30, 1937, Article 179 of the 1936 Honduran Constitution was reformed under Decree 53 to establish Tegucigalpa and Comayagüela as a Central District. Tegucigalpa is located in the southern-central highland region of Honduras in the department of Francisco Morazán of which it is also the departmental capital. It is situated in a valley, surrounded by mountains. Tegucigalpa and Comayagüela, being sister cities, are physically separated by the Choluteca River. The Central District is the largest of the 28 municipalities in the Francisco Morazán department. Tegucigalpa is Honduras' largest and most populous city as well as the nation's political and administrative center. Tegucigalpa is host to 25 foreign embassies and 16 consulates in addition to being the home base of several state-owned entities such as ENEE and Hondutel, the national energy and telecommunications companies, respectively. The city is also home to the country's most important university, the National Autonomous University of Honduras, as well as the national soccer team. The capital's international airport, Toncontín, is notorious around the world for its extremely short runway for an international airport and the unusual maneuvers pilots must undertake upon landing or taking off to avoid the nearby mountains. The Central District Mayor's Office is the city's governing body, headed by a mayor and 10 aldermen forming the Municipal Corporation . Being the department's seat as well, the governor's office of Francisco Morazán is also located in the capital. In 2008, the city operated on an approved budget of 1.555 billion lempiras . In 2009, the city government reported a revenue of 1.955 billion lempiras more than any other capital city in Central America except Panama City. Tegucigalpa's infrastructure has not kept with the population growth. Deficient urban planning, densely condensed urbanization, and poverty are ongoing problems. Heavily congested roadways where current road infrastructure is unable to efficiently handle over 400,000 vehicles create havoc on a daily basis. Both current national and local governments have taken approaches at improving or increasing infrastructure as well as to reducing poverty in the city.

San Pedro Sula

San Pedro Sula is a city in Honduras. The city is located in the northwest corner of the country, in the Valle de Sula about 100 kilometres south of Puerto Cortés on the Caribbean Sea. With an estimated population of one million in the main municipality, and 1,445,598 in its metro area it is the second largest city, after the capital Tegucigalpa. It is the capital of the Cortés Department.

Comayagua

Comayagua is a city in Honduras, some 50 miles northwest of Tegucigalpa on the highway to San Pedro Sula at an elevation of 1,949 feet above sea level. In 2003 the estimated population was 60,000 people. It is the capital of the Comayagua department of Honduras. The city is noted for its wealth of Spanish Colonial architecture. The central square has a cathedral with the oldest clock in the Americas.

Santa Rosa de Copán

Santa Rosa de Copán is the departmental capital of the Honduran department of Copán. It is approximately 1,150 metres above mean sea level. Santa Rosa de Copán, Honduras, is the largest and most important city in western Honduras with a population of 42,803. Santa Rosa is the governmental hub of the department of Copán. The city is connected through the International Highway of the West with San Pedro Sula to the North and with the borders of El Salvador at El Poy and Guatemala at Agua Caliente to the west. Santa Rosa has a subtropical climate with temperatures ranging from 25 °C to 29 °C in the summer , and from 13 °C to 15 °C in the winter . The historical centre of Santa Rosa de Copán has been declared a Honduran national monument, with preservation of its Republican or Neoclassical architecture and cobblestone streets that has its origins in a prosperous tobacco farming industry of the 18th century. Santa Rosa is situated at a strategic point between Copán Ruinas and Gracias, Lempira, and the Celaque National Park. As before, tobacco farming remains a staple of the local economy, particularly the cultivation of premium cigar tobaccos. The La Flor de Copán cigar factory is located in the city.

Catacamas

Catacamas is a municipality in the Olancho Department of Honduras. It is the largest municipality in Central America in terms of area.

Río Plátano Biosphere Reserve

The Río Plátano Biosphere Reserve is 5,250 km² of preserved land in the La Mosquitia region on the Caribbean coast of Honduras. Most of the land runs along the Río Plátano. The reserve has a number of endangered species and some of Honduras largest sections of forest. It has been a World Heritage site and biosphere reserve since 1982. In 2011, UNESCO placed the reserve on the List of World Heritage in Danger. The reserve encompasses both mountainous and lowland tropical rainforest, full of diverse wildlife and plant life, and has more than 2000 inhabitants. The reserve is part of the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor that stretches from Mexico southwards trough Central America. Although the reserve covers a large portion of Honduras, very little is recorded about the biological diversity within it. While previous management plans have proven successful, a continued investigation into ongoing management plans and future conservation issues will be necessary to keep this valuable reserve safe. Currently there are threats to the conservation of the reserve which include illegal hunting, logging and clearing of land to graze cattle. Recent rafting expeditions from the Rio Platano headwaters through all three zones of the reserve have documented cattle grazing in the core zone,commercial fishing and hunting camps along the river and clear cutting of forest near Las Marias.

Arizona

Arizona is a municipality in the Honduran department of Atlántida. The villages of Cangelica, Chiquito, El Cedro, El Coco, El Retiro, Hicaque, Jilamo, Las Palmas, Los Bolos, Matarras, Mezapa, Mojiman, Oropendolas, Planes de Hicaque, Quebradas de Arena, Santa Maria, Uluasito and Zapote are located in Arizona.

El Progreso

The municipality of El Progreso is located in the Honduran department of Yoro. Ramón Villeda Morales International Airport of San Pedro Sula is located west of the city. Due to its strategic location, many travellers or tourists pass through el Progreso in one way or another. For that reason, el Progreso is considered a city of extreme importance in Honduras. Many travellers going to San Pedro Sula, Tela, La Ceiba, La Lima, Tegucigalpa etc. make a connection here, or use it as a rest area. The territorial extension of the city is 547.5 km². Of this territory; 40.51 km² is defined as urban and 506.99 km² as rural. The city is also divided into three geographic zones, that make up more than 100 barrios, that is home to more than 90,000 people. The climate of the city is humid.

Celaque National Park

Celaque National Park is a national park in Lempira Department, western Honduras. It was established on 1 January 1987 and covers an area of 266.4 square kilometres. It includes Honduras’ tallest peak, called Cerro Las Minas or Pico Celaque, which reaches approximately 2,870 metres above mean sea level. It has an elevation ranging from 975 to 2,870 metres . Celaque’s terrain is very rugged, two-thirds of the area has a slope greater than 60 degrees. The park is classified as a cloud forest with a mean precipitation of 1,600 mm at lower altitudes and a mean of 2,400 mm at higher altitudes. The word celaque is reputed to mean caja de aguas ") in the local, but now extinct, indigenous Lenca language. Celaque’s nine rivers supplies water to 120 villages nearby including the district capital of Gracias. Celaque is high in biodiversity and is home to jaguars, pumas, ocelots and Bolitoglossa celaque, an endangered newt found only in the mountains of Celaque. However, Celaque was not always a recognized park.

Jeanette Kawas National Park

Jeanette Kawas National Park is a national park located in the municipality of Tela, on the northern Caribbean coast of the Atlántida department of Honduras. It was established on 4 November 1994. The park covers an area of 781.62 square kilometres and has an altitude of 900 metres. The park was created and is managed by the PROLANSATE foundation .

La Tigra National Park

For the band Le Tigra, see Le Tigre. La Tigra National Park was the first national park in Honduras, by decree No. 976-80 whose principal objective is "The Conservation, Ecologic Preservation and Maintenance of The Hydrologic Potential of this Reserve". It was established on 1 January 1980 and covers an area of 238.21 square kilometers. It has an altitude of between 1,800 and 2,185 metres. In addition to its exuberant natural beauty and with a seductive historic past, the La Tigra Mountain with its immense cloud forest tropical vegetation also provides more than 30% of the necessities of the capital city, Tegucigalpa, and 100% of the bordering communities and has been protected since the early 1920s, evidence of this are the weirs of Jutiapa. It is a cloud forest with an area of 328 km2, located 25 km from Tegucigalpa. This park is found really near to the city of Tegucigalpa, located to the north of it, to just a few 22 km . of distance away. The parks access points are four, but for visiting purposes 2 routes are mainly used: the highway leading to El Hatillo and the highway that leads to Valle de Ángeles, San Juancito and Cantarranas. The park provides two Visitors Center and Eco Lodges, one in the community of Jutiapa and the other in the community of El Rosario. To access the first one, taking the road to El Hatillo will do it, spending approximately 50 minutes to reach it, passing through several communities on its way. To access the second one, at just 1½ of Tegucigalpa the road to Valle de Angeles, San Juancito located in the village of El Rosario will lead to Rosarios Visitors Center., at an elevation of 1,650 m . This last one equipped for several activities, including a museum. The Park with its 240 km2 is divided in two zones: nucleus and buffer. The nucleus zone of the park counts with 8 hiking trails that cross it, adding up to more than 23 km, from which, two of them connect both visitors centers.

Nueva Ocotepeque

Nueva Ocotepeque is a city in south west Honduras. It is the capital city of the Ocotepeque department of Honduras. Nueva Ocotopeque was settled in 1935 after the site of the former town of Ocotepeque was destroyed by flooding.

El Cajón Dam

The El Cajón Dam, officially known as Central Hidroeléctrica Francisco Morazán, is a hydroelectric power plant located in Western Honduras. The dam impounds the Comayagua River, which derives its large volume from two large tributaries, the Humuya River and the Sulaco River. El Cajón is a double arch dam, which uses parabolic geometry in horizontal and vertical axises to spread the weight of the impounded water to canyon walls which act as buttresses. Overall, the dam is the fifth highest dam in the Americas and the 16th highest in the world, as well as the highest arch dam in the western hemisphere, and the sixth highest worldwide.

Tegucigalpa Honduras Temple

The Tegucigalpa Honduras Temple is the 141st temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints . It is the first to be built in Honduras and the sixth in Central America. The temple was announced in a letter to local church leaders 9 June 2006; and later in a press release published 24 June 2006. Ceremonial groundbreaking and dedication were held at a site located in eastern Tegucigalpa, near the Basilica de Suyapa, on 9 June 2007, but the church later announced that the temple would be built at a new site.

Cerro Las Minas

Cerro Las Minas is the highest mountain in Honduras. Cerro Las Minas is located in the rugged and relatively isolated Lempira Department in the western part of the country. A Honduran national park, the Celaque National Park, was established in 1987 for the mountain and some 266 square kilometres of surrounding territory. It is part of the Cordillera de Celaque mountain range and is given the name "Pico Celaque, 2849m" on local 1:50,000 topographic mapping, but SRTM data suggests that 2870 m is more accurate.

Cusuco National Park

Cusuco National Park is a national park in Honduras. It was established on 1 January 1959 and covers an area of 234.4 square kilometres . Cusuco National Park is a 23,400 hectares protected area in the Merendon mountains of northwest Honduras. The park ranges from just above sea level in the west to 2,425 metres in the middle. The park comprises a 7,690 hectares core zone surrounded by a 15,750 hectares buffer zone. Cusuco encompasses several major habitats, including semi-arid pine forest, moist pine forest, moist broadleaf forest and dwarf forest at elevations above 2,000 metres . The park is part of the Meso-American biodiversity hotspot, a region characterised by exceptional species richness. Cusuco also has great diversity of habitats and high beta diversity in many groups due to the large elevational gradients in the park. Cusuco supports exceptional biodiversity. Some of the key features of the park include the globally threatened taxa which the park protects especially amphibians, Baird’s tapir, the assemblage of montane forest specialist birds, jewel scarab beetles, and the globally rare bosque enano habitat, which is characterised by Randia brachysiphon. Cusuco is recognised as a Key Biodiversity Area due to the overlapping ranges of several globally threatened amphibian species. The integrity of the ecosystem is threatened by land cover change and unsustainable land management practices – particularly conversion of forest to coffee plantations by human population growth and infrastructure intensification, overexploitation of large mammals, the amphibian disease chytridiomycosis, and climate change. There is a visitors center at 15.496111°N 88.211667°W / 15.496111; 88.211667.

La Muralla National Park

La Muralla National Park is a national park in Honduras. It was established on 1 January 1993. and covers an area of approximately 13,708.35 ha and a buffer zone of 13,195.05 ha for a total area of 26,903.48 ha. The park is part of three municipalities of the Department of Olancho, Honduras. Approximately 80% of the park is located in La Unión, with approximately 10% in Jano and Esquipulas del Norte, respectively.

Montaña de Comayagua National Park

Montaña de Comayagua National Park is a national park in Honduras. It was established on 1 January 1987 and covers an area of 184.8 square kilometres. The park is known locally by the name Parque Nacional Montaña de Comayagua and the acronym PANACOMA. The park can be reached by heading north from Comayagua on the highway to La Esperanza. At the town of San Jeróniomo turn right onto a dirt road. The turn off is marked by a sign. Follow the signs for Río Negro and PANACOMA. The road is mostly single lane with a few concrete bridges. A four wheel drive vehicle with good clearance is necessary to successfully transit the road. There is a park information centre in the Village of Río Negro at 14.542533°N 87.554117°W / 14.542533; 87.554117 14°3233.12"N 87°3314.82"W. Hiking guides can be hired at the information centre. The park is home of many waterfalls. The Río Gavilán has a 50 metre high water fall called the Cascada de los Ensueños that is located at 14°3257.65"N 87°3236.17"W on a well constructed trail about an hour-long hike from the trailhead. The trailhead is located at 14°331.82"N 87°331.71"W along the road leading to Río Negro.

Montaña Santa Bárbara National Park is a national park in Honduras. It was established on 1 January 1987 and covers an area of 121.3 square kilometres. It has an altitude of 2,777 metres. Its peak can be reached from the southeast side, ascending from the village of Los Andes.

Montecristo Trifinio National Park

Montecristo Trifinio National Park is a national park in Honduras. It was established on 1 January 1987 and covers an area of 54 square kilometres. The Montecristo massif is an area where the borders of Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador meet, and its protection was a joint initiative of these three countries, which resulted in the creation of the national parks in Honduras and El Salvador, as well as the Guatemalan Trifinio biosphere reserve.

Sierra de Agalta National Park

Sierra de Agalta National Park is a national park in Honduras. It was established on 1 January 1987 and covers an area of 207.85 square kilometres. It has an altitude of between 1,800 and 2,354 metres.

Roatán

Roatán, located between the islands of Útila and Guanaja, is the largest of Honduras' Bay Islands. The island was formerly known as Ruatan and Rattan. It is approximately 77 kilometres long, and less than 8 kilometres across at its widest point. The island consists of two municipalities: José Santos Guardiola in the east and Roatán, including the Cayos Cochinos, further south in the west. The most populous town of the island is Coxen Hole, capital of Roatán municipality, located in the southwest. The easternmost quarter of the island is separated by a channel through the mangroves that is 15 metres wide on average. This section is called Helene, or Santa Elena in Spanish. Satellite islands at the eastern end are Morat, Barbareta, and Pigeon Cay. Further west between French Harbour and Coxen Hole are several cays, including Stamp Cay and Barefoot Cay.

Estadio Rubén Guifarro is a multi-purpose stadium in Catacamas, Honduras. It is currently used mostly for football matches and is the home stadium of Atlético Olanchano. The stadium holds 5,000 people. The stadium was renovated for the 2007–08 season. Some of the works included changing the grass turf and increasing the capacity of the stadium.

Estadio Sergio Antonio Reyes

Estadio Sergio Antonio Reyes is a multi-purpose stadium in Santa Rosa de Copán, Honduras. The stadium was previously called "Estadio Municipal Miraflores" and was founded in the Miraflores district of Santa Rosa de Copan, Honduras on 26 January 1975 by the Municipal Mayor of that time, representatives of CONAPID, members of the Rotary International Club, among other invited guests. It is used mostly for football matches and is the home stadium of Deportes Savio. The stadium holds 3,000 people. The stadium is divided into two sectors, Sol and Sombra .

Estadio Francisco Morazán

The Francisco Morazán Stadium is one of the three stadiums available to the city of San Pedro Sula, Honduras. It is an official stadium for games of the National League of Professional Football in Honduras; as well as, for international matches and international competitions of the Football Confederation of North, Central and Caribbean and FIFA. Nowadays, it is the official stadium of Real Club Deportivo España and sometimes for Club Deportivo Marathon. It is also used for other activities, including concerts, religious services, parades, and other things. It has a capacity of 18,000 fans, according to FIFA restrictions, but 21,500 viewers according to the Football Federation of Honduras. Through its history, the Francisco Morazán Stadium has hosted major sporting events. At this stadium, they were held tournaments and World Cup qualifying matches for the adult Honduran teams. Also, qualifying championships, for the Under 17, Under 20 and Olympic categories belonging to the CONCACAF area.

Estadio Yankel Rosenthal

Estadio Yankel Rosenthal is a multi-purpose use stadium in San Pedro Sula, Honduras. It recently underwent construction and will now be used primarily for football matches. It is the home stadium of San Pedro Sula-based C.D. Marathón, the second oldest team in the nation, founded November 25, 1925. The stadium has a capacity of 15,000 spectators. The project, which was scheduled to be finalized in its entirety by 2007, was rescheduled to 2009 due to financial issues. The stadium is named after C.D. Marathón's current president and part owner Yankel Rosenthal, who started building the stadium, making C.D. Marathón the first and only Honduran football club to own its own stadium.

Manuel Bonilla National Theater

Manuel Bonilla National Theater is a cultural center situated in the city of Tegucigalpa, M.D.C. Capital of the republic of Honduras. In 1905 several tegucigalpan intellectuals lovers of the letters and the art, included Rómulo Ernesto Durón, Luis Landa Escober, Froylán Turcios, Esteban Guardiola, Augusto C. Coello, formed a committee to commemorate the three hundred years of the work Don Quijote de la Mancha of Miguel de Cervantes, requested to the president of Honduras Manuel Bonilla the construction of a National Theatre in honour to the Spanish writer. They requested a decree for the construction of a coliseum for performing arts that would carry the name of "Theatre Cervantes", more than a theatre, a coliseum, where the capitalinos could witness theatre, opera, zarzuela and dance to the European style. The decree of construction issued the day 4 April 1905, from the same year began the construction, the theatre built in 10 years, with an only model in Centroamérica.
