Thorpe Park

Thorpe Park, styled THORPE PARK Resort, is a theme park with a temporary hotel in between the towns of Chertsey and Staines, Surrey, England, UK. It is operated and owned by Merlin Entertainments. After demolition of the Thorpe Park Estate in the 1930s, the site became a gravel pit. Thorpe Park was built in 1979 on the gravel pit which was partially flooded, creating a water-based theme for the park. This essentially allows guests to view the park as an island, which is where the island like no other slogan originates from. Major attractions include Tidal Wave, Colossus, Nemesis Inferno, Stealth, SAW The Ride, and The Swarm The park is mainly geared towards a young adult/teenage audience due to the vast majority of signature attractions being roller coasters and thrill rides. The tallest of these being Stealth, an Intamin Accelerator Coaster, which launches riders from 0-80 mph in 1.8 seconds sending them 205 ft into the air. The newest is The Swarm, which is the only BM wing rider coaster in the UK, has a total of 5 inversions and is 127 ft tall.Thorpe park is Europes 3rd most extreme theme park

Chertsey Bridge

Chertsey Bridge is a road bridge across the River Thames in England, connecting Chertsey to low-lying riverside meadows in Laleham, Surrey. It is situated 550 yards downstream from the M3 motorway bridge over the Thames and is close to Chertsey Lock on the reach above Shepperton Lock.The bridge is a seven-arch tied arch white stone bridge built 1783–85 and is a Grade II* listed building. It has a weight restriction of 18 tonnes for LGVs. The first bridge on the site was built some time after 1299 as in that year the king and his family were carried over the river by a ferry-woman called Sibille. The first reference to a bridge at Chertsey is in 1530, then a "goodly Bridg of Timber newly repaird. By 1580 it was dilapidated and the Crown, who had acquired responsibility from Chertsey Abbey, was trying to find someone on whom they could pin the bill for repairs. The documents record the dimensions as "210 feet in length and 15 feet in breadth". In 1632 the bridge, which was slanted upwards from Middlesex to Surrey, was described as like the work of a left-handed man. The slant was more annoying to navigation and passage was reported in 1774 to be very inconvenient and dangerous. The present stone bridge was first considered in 1780 and replacement of the old one began in 1783. There were 184 piles for the old bridge, which were cut off six feet below high-water mark, and the materials of the old bridge fetched £120 at auction in August 1784. The architect of the new bridge was James Paine and the surveyor was Kenton Couse. It was built at a cost of £6813 4s 11d. In an early example of contract dispute, the contractor built the number of arches specified, but as they did not reach the shore, the counties had to pay, at extra expense, for linking the bridge to the banks. On the Middlesex bank, cows graze downstream in Dumsey Meadow, a Site of Special Scientific Interest, and upstream is Laleham Park. On the Surrey bank are the outskirts of Chertsey with Abbey Chase house on the river bank. At the south east end of the bridge is a late-19th-century square cast-iron Coal tax post with cornice and capping, and the City of London shield on one face. It is grade II listed. There are two popular pub/restaurants, one on each side of the bridge: The Boathouse/Bridge Hotel and The Kingfisher; both have patio areas overlooking the Thames. The Bridge Hotel is a modern hotel and blends with new luxury apartments with riverside views built downstream of the Bridge in "Bridge Wharf".

Chertsey Abbey

Chertsey Abbey, dedicated to St Peter, was a Benedictine monastery located at Chertsey in the English county of Surrey. Originally founded by Saint Erkenwald, later Bishop of London, in 666 AD and he became the first abbot. Most of north-west Surrey was granted to the abbey by King Frithuwald of Surrey. Dark Age saints buried here include Saint Beocca, a Dark Ages Catholic Saint from Anglo-Saxon England was also buried here around 870 AD, and ninth century Saint Edor of Chertsey. In the 9th century it was sacked by the Danes and refounded from Abingdon Abbey by King Edgar of England in 964. In the eleventh century the monks engineered the Abbey River as an offshoot of the River Thames to supply power to the abbeys watermill. In late medieval times, the Abbey became famous as the burial place of King Henry VI . The abbey was dissolved by the commissioners of King Henry VIII in 1537 but the community moved to Bisham.

Colossus

Colossus is a roller coaster at Thorpe Park in Surrey, England, and the parks first major attraction. It was built by Swiss manufacturers Intamin and designed by Werner Stengel as an adaptation of Monte Makaya in Brazil. Tussauds designer John Wardley adapted the project to include an extra two inversions as well as reducing its height. Colossus was the worlds first roller coaster with ten inversions; an exact replica, called the Tenth Ring Roller Coaster, was later built at Chimelong Paradise in Guangzhou, China. It retained its title of having the most inversions on any other roller coaster in the world until The Smiler at Alton Towers took the record in 2013. Manufacturers Intamin used a similar train style to their Hyper Coaster models which are exposed by removing the sides of the train. This caused problems as riders could lift their legs outside of the train whilst it was in motion. For a brief period in 2002 and 2003 the ride was equipped with metal bars on the sides of the train to prevent this. During 2003 the trains were fitted with new style restraints to prevent riders from doing this and the metal plates were removed. The roller coaster is located in the Lost City area, in the south-east of the park. The ride is formed of a vertical loop, a cobra roll, two corkscrews and five heartline rolls. The rides rough theme is the ruins of a recently unearthed Atlantean civilisation. The music for the ride and surrounding area was composed by Ian Habgood and is shared with the roller coaster Colossos in Heide Park, Germany. During planning and construction Colossus was known as Project Odyssey; both names allude to Ancient Greece, albeit in different ways. In 2009, the rides lift hill chain was replaced and station area was cleaned of rust. In 2010, Colossuss signs and station were repainted.

The Swarm

The Swarm is a steel Wing Coaster at Thorpe Park, a theme park in the United Kingdom. The Swarm was the worlds second Wing Coaster designed by Swiss roller coaster manufacturer Bolliger Mabillard and the United Kingdoms first Wing Coaster. Construction commenced in May 2011, and the coaster opened on 15 March 2012. Starting in 2013, the last two rows of each train face backwards, while the first five rows face forward. The 775-metre-long ride stands 39 metres tall and features five inversions. On the one-minute twenty-five second ride, riders experience speeds of up to 59 miles per hour and 4.5 times the force of gravity. A marketing campaign for the ride began 11 months before The Swarm was opened to the public. The ride has generally been well received, ranking highly amongst other roller coasters of its type.

St Peter's Hospital

St. Peter’s Hospital is an NHS district general hospital in Chertsey, Surrey, England. It has 400 beds and a wide range of acute care services, including an Accident & Emergency department. It is operated by Ashford and St Peter's Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The hospital buildings are interspersed with a few trees and surrounded by 52 acres (21 ha) of Metropolitan Green Belt much of it former landscaped grounds associated with Botleys Mansion between Woking and Chertsey near junction 11 of the M25 motorway. In straight lines it is 20 miles (32 km) WSW of Charing Cross, Central London and 7 miles (11 km) from Heathrow Airport. The hospital is the main acute services hospital for the boroughs of Woking, Runnymede, Spelthorne and the western part of Elmbridge. Largest towns in these boroughs are Woking, Staines, Chertsey, Sunbury-on-Thames, Egham and Walton on Thames. Its first buildings were built to serve casualties in the aftermath of the Second World War and the hospital has been rebuilt, developed and extended to include maternity services, a departmental and clinic area, and a new theatre complex. In the early 1990s, the Duchess of Kent Wing, which includes a Postgraduate Education Centre and modern well-equipped wards, was opened. A new building for the Accident & Emergency, ITU and Orthopaedic Unit opened in the summer of 1998, attached to which since their 2006 construction have been two further wards. The hospital radio station, Radio Wey started broadcasting to patients and staff from St. Peters in 1965 and today also serves an area beyond the hospital's main catchment area.

Chertsey railway station

Chertsey railway station serves the town of Chertsey in the Runnymede District of Surrey, England. It is located on the Chertsey Branch of the Waterloo to Reading Line and is operated by South Western Railway. The station was opened, with the branch line, in 1848. It comprises Up and Down platforms having brick buildings: the main building being on the Down side. There is a level crossing here. The Station Hotel was constructed beside it in 1869. This was converted to an office building in 1990 but still retains a pub style sign at the front overhanging the footpath. Inside the station building was a café called the Buffet Carr which closed late 2009. A second unnamed café was operating at the station, which was replaced by 'Cravin' Coffee' in late 2016. Originally suited to serve up to 4-coach trains, an extension project that concluded in 2017 extended both platforms to serve up to 12-coach trains.
